  • New Slumberland singles out now

    Out 19 2009, 15h38 por SlumberlandRecs

    hello all-
    Another week and we're back with a giant batch of great new Slumberland singles, a fresh new podcast and those 20th anniversary shows.

    ||||| Frankie Rose delivers debut solo single |||||
    Haunting pop from Brooklyn's Frankie Rose. Timeless music that recalls the ghosts of 60s girl group sounds, Brill Building songwriters and the 80s/90s/00s continuum of Black Tambourine, The Aislers Set and her previous groups Vivian Girls and Crystal Stilts. Pitchfork cited her song "Where Do You Run To?" as one of the best of 2008, and now with much anticipation we are excited to bring you Frankie's debut 7". Recorded at Marlborough Farms Studio with Gary Olson, Kyle Forrester and Crystal Stilts' J.B. Townsend, Thee Only One is a perfect slice of surf-tinged noise-pop.

    ||||| First solo record since 1995 for Gregory Webster |||||
    Lovely 12-string folk-pop from one of out all-time favorite artists. From Razorcuts to Saturn V to Sportique, Mr. Webster has always delivered the goods, and we're pleased as punch to have Promised Land, an understated gem of a single, on Slumberland. Simplicity rules throughout, complementing the naked honestly of the songwriting. Gregory's signature 12 string sound is augmented by haunting harmonium accompaniment from The Birthday Girl (Vatican Cellars) and beautifully uplifting vocal flourishes provided by Pam Perry of Slumberland's own legendary Black Tambourine.

    ||||| The Mantles release super-limited tour single |||||
    A stop-gap single for their just-completed tour, this Slumberland/Dulc-i-Tone co-release is only be available via mailorder from the labels. 300 copies, all swirly color vinyl, the single features two exclusive songs not available on the brand new Siltbreeze LP. "Bad Design" has the lazy drive of a "tougher" Bats -- hungover with a shot voice and a negative attitude. On the flip, "Rachel" is zoned-out and inescapably psychedelic album out-take.
    For more info, mp3 and ordering: http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/catalog/show/126

    ||||| The Bats make a welcome return to vinyl |||||
    Brilliant four song EP from these New Zealand pop legends. After 25 years and 7 classic albums, The Bats' pastoral folk/pop and top-notch song-craft continues to thrill. The Don't You Rise EP gathers up four tunes from 1998 and 2003, helping to complete the discographical picture leading up to the release of their current album, "The Guilty Office."

    ||||| sarandon and The Membranes proclaim Death To Trad Rock! |||||
    The Membranes noisy post-punk classic Spike Milligan's Tape Recorder gets a 2009 re-rub from Sarandon - dig the howling chaos. To sweeten the deal we've put the 1984 original on the flip. This insane noise was a key part of the 80s underground and a crucial complement to the smart pop being released by labels like Pink and Creation, and we're very pleased to be able to bring you a small, influential slice of it. Death to trad rock!

    ||||| Stew heads back to the Kitchen |||||
    Stew Anderson is not only one of our favorite musicians of all time, he's also a record collector of the highest order. His new "Kitchen Sounds #3" podcast continues his series with a shedload of rare and excellent DIY treats. With babies and cows and bands and a label I can't imagine where he finds time to dig up these podcasts, but I sure am grateful that he does!

    ||||| Twentieth Anniversary Shows |||||
    Finally, we're ready to announce the details of our Slumberland 20th anniversary shows. So far we've booked parties in DC and NY; both shows feature line-ups that combine bands from the current Slumberland roster with some very exciting reunions of bands from our past: The Ropers, Nord Express and Lorelei. We're still working on setting up West Coast shows too, so if you can't travel to the East Coast for these gigs don't lose hope!

    ||||| Coming soon |||||
    In a few weeks we shift back into LP mode with Brilliant Colors' debut album and a brand new LP from our Bostonian heroes Pants Yell!. And hey, we are already working on 2010 releases. Can't stop, won't stop!

  • New Pains of Being Pure At Heart EP and Devon Williams 7" out now

    Set 15 2009, 13h43 por SlumberlandRecs

    hello-
    Another week, and two more fresh Slumberland releases for you! Vacations? We don't need no vacations!

    ||||| The Pains of Being Pure At Heart release new four-song EP |||||
    Not content to rest on the laurels of having one of the best and most talked-about albums of 2009, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are back with "Higher Than The Stars," four brand-new songs that do what the band does best – breathe fresh life into indie-pop with exuberance, charm and of course quality tunes.

    From the New Wave-flavored bliss of "Higher Than The Stars" to the crashing power-pop of new live favorite "Twins," this EP is both a perfect summation of what The Pains are all about and a signpost to the future. Fizzy noise-pop is present and correct in the form of "103," and the band switches gears a bit for the brooding 80s-esque "Falling Over." Capping things off we have a series of remixes from Saint Etienne, DJ Downfall, Skanfrom and Others In Conversation. We were thrilled to hear how these producers remodeled the Pains' originals and hope you will be too. You can go to the EP info page for a complete break-down of the track-listings on all the formats. Take note, the remix-only 12" is running late and will NOT be available until October 6.

    ||||| Welcome to Slumberland, Devon Williams |||||
    LA-based musician Devon Williams released one of our favorite records of 2008 in the form of the brilliant Carefree. Demonstrating a knack for crafting timeless pop that's equal parts Brill Building and Topanga Canyon, Williams hearkened back to great songwriters like Nilsson, Chilton, Downes and Westerberg. Buoyed by Wall of Sound production, economical arrangements and a wealth of 12-string jangle, "Carefree" is a perfect pop record in the truest sense, a record bursting with melody that rewards repeated listens.

    Now we're quite excited to welcome Devon to the Slumberland family with "Sufferer," a taster for his upcoming Slumberland album. "Sufferer" is another Williams future-classic, instantly memorable and charming with its driving elegance, the chorused and reverb-laden guitars reminiscent of mid-period Cure or perhaps the power-pop of Tommy Keene or Let's Active. On the flip, "Who Cares About Forever" also impresses, a slow-dance simmer with a wonderful melody and soaring, spare guitar jangle.

    ||||| Other new releases |||||
    Hey, don't forget to pick up these other new releases from the last few weeks:

    >> Brown Recluse - The Soft Skin 12" - Pastoral, psychedelic pop that fits in snugly with Curt Boettcher, Margo Guryan, The Clientele and Elephant 6. Features "Night Train" and "Contour and Context." (http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/catalog/show/117)

    >> Sic Alps - L. Mansion 7" - 60s-flavored fuzz and crackle from the Sic Alps garage. Two ace folk/beat hip-swingers, including a cover of Donovan's "Superlungs." (http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/catalog/show/119)

    >> The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Come Saturday 7" - Timeless noisy pop from Brooklyn's amazing Pains. Huge guitars and catchy melodies mark this as one of THE tunes of 2009. Features the non-lp tune "Side Ponytail" on the flip. (http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/catalog/show/118)

    >> Searching For The Now 5 7" - Our Searching For The Now series continues with this excellent all-Swedish edition. The note-perfect C86 girl-pop of Liechtenstein makes a great complement for the feedback-driven buzz-pop of The Faintest Ideas on the flip. Three great songs on cream/black swirl vinyl. (http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/catalog/show/114)

    >> Searching For The Now 6 7" - Slumberland's popular Searching For The Now split single series continues to fire on all cylinders with this excellent UK pairing. On the a-side we find Welsh pop mavens The School, with a smashing cover of late Left Banke tune "And Suddenly." George Washington Brown creates pastoral, psychedelic power-pop, and his two songs on this split single are brand new and exclusive. Pressed on grey/black swirl vinyl. ||||| new podcast from Sarandon's Crayola |||||
    Crayola from sarandon has rather eclectic musical tastes at the best of times, but when stricken with swine flu you can only imagine what his fevered brain would cook up. His new PIGSICK podcast is journey into pop, post-punk and noise inspired by The Fall and extreme fever. Sort of the same thing, I guess.
    listen now: http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/extras/podcast/26

    ||||| coming soon |||||
    Over the next several weeks we'll be having a 7" single explosion. On the schedule we have a four-song EP from NZ pop legends The Bats, a split single featuring sarandon and The Membranes, a fine single from Razorcuts' Gregory Webster, and finally the debut solo single from Crystal Stilts' Frankie Rose. Farther into the fall we shift back into LP mode with Brilliant Colors' debut album and a brand new LP from our Bostonian heroes Pants Yell!. Phew!

    ||||| Twentieth Anniversary shows |||||
    It's awfully hard to believe that Slumberland has been around for almost twenty years now. When we started I couldn't imagine doing much more than putting out a few singles, and now here we are over 100 releases later and still chugging along. To help us celebrate this cool milestone, we're putting together a series of shows in November that will take place in two or three US cities and include an impressive roster of Slumberland bands both old and new. These shows are going to be pretty special, so please keep an eye on our blog (http://perfect.slumberlandrecords.com/) for more info soon.

  • Searching For The Now rolls on

    Ago 11 2009, 20h15 por SlumberlandRecs

    hello-
    Slumberland's summer of what can only be termed conspicuous excess continues with two new singles, the long-awaited next installments in our Searching For The Now series.

    ||||| Searching For The Now rolls on |||||
    Slumberland's popular Searching For The Now split single series continues to fire on all cylinders with Volumes 5 and 6, showcasing six great songs by some of our favorite bands of the last few years.

    Searching For The Now 5 is an all-Swedish edition, and an all-Gothenburg one at that! On the a-side we have note-perfect C86 girl-pop from Liechtenstein in the form of the exclusive "This Must Be Heaven." It makes a great complement to the feedback-driven crash-pop of The Faintest Ideas on the flip. Racing along at 100mph, the lads cap off a great career with two crashing gems that'll sit snugly between your Boyracer and Wedding Present records. Three great songs in all, on cream/black swirl vinyl.
    more info and mp3s: http://www.slumberlandrecords.com/catalog/show/114

    Searching For The Now 6 keeps the quality level high with an all-UK pairing. On the a-side we find Welsh pop mavens The School, with a smashing cover of the late Left Banke tune "And Suddenly." Ace sunshine pop for those late summer afternoons. George Washington Brown is the latest project from Kenickie's Johnny X, in which he creates pastoral, psychedelic power-pop. Last year's On The Night Plain album has been a favorite Chez Slumber, and the two exclusive songs on this single show are equally accomplished.

    Slumberland continues its 2009 campaign in two weeks with the release of a very limited 7" of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's "Come Saturday" and an equally fab new single from Sic Alps. Following that we'll have fresh singles from Devon Williams and The Bats, a remarkable 12" from Brown Recluse and the eagerly-awaited new EP from The Pains of Being Pure At Heart. Farther into the Fall things get really fun with Brilliant Colors' debut album, the debut solo single from Crystal Stilts' Frankie Rose and a brand new Pants Yell! album.

    best new stuff:

    1. Cut The World (and Still). No thought required here. It's brilliant. I'm sure this'll push people to start claiming the Philippines to be the new Sweden, or something. Maybe so? (though I wish we were hearing more from Astrolab over in Indonesia, too). In any case, it demonstrates that other people are better at reinventing that UK indie late 80's/early 90's sound.

    2. Heavy Deavy Skull Lover - technically a 2007 release I think, but I didn't hear it until earlier this year. Slow, sprawling and loud, it's the kind of thing that's been calming me down after (or during) work.

    3. Hong Kong In The 60s - I'm still waiting for some kind of release, but in the meantime, the demos you can get from last.fm or their site work well - top tracks are probably The Finishing Line and TocarFootsteps.

    4. Desire - out of nowhere (at least as far as I can tell) comes a new voice to try to follow on from the legacy of, say, The Blackeyed Susans and a few other similar Australian bands with guys with nice voices. Unfortunately I was overseas when the album launch gig happened.

    best old stuff I just found this year:

    1. The Greatest Story Never Told - it took a few listens, then suddenly its brilliance nearly overwhelmed me. Another fine example of somebody born too late. Very dreamy.

    2. At the National Grid - how can one man (Robert Scott) be in two so utterly vital bands (The Bats and The Clean)? He should be declared a national treasure (along with David Kilgour). A surprisingly strong release for a band so late in their career, where you might think it'd be recording by numbers by now. There's a great video floating about for TocarFlowers & Trees, too.

    As last.fm will point out, I've spent most of the year listening to The Angels of Light, Piano Magic, The Clientele and Damon & Naomi, for what it's worth.

  • Dandelion Radio - June 2008 shows

    Mai 28 2008, 18h29 por DandelionRadio

    22 hours again this month.

    Andrew Morrison:
    Andy's regular two-hour June show includes a specially-recorded session from whole sky monitor, as well as another exclusive live track from Eliza. You'll also hear tracks from Burial, Laura Cantrell, The Helio Sequence and New Order, along with Teresa and Scott's regular monthly guest spots and many other new and unsigned tunes.
    Also be sure to listen to 'Teresa & Andy's Fantasy Festival' later on in this month's schedule, in which Andy and his girlfriend pick their ideal line-up for a 2008 summer festival!

    Teresa & Andy's Fantasy Festival:
    'Teresa & Andy's Fantasy Festival', is a two-hour special in which Andy and his girlfriend pick and introduce their ideal line-up for a 2008 summer festival. There are three days and two stages worth of acts in their "virtual festival", featuring headliners such as Elbow, Depeche Mode, Bloc Party and Neil Young, as well as the finest up-and-coming artists, both signed and unsigned, including DeVotchKa, Samuraj Cities, Patrick Watson, lanterns on the lake and Errors. Pitch a tent near your computer, and join Andy and Teresa for a festival during which you won't get washed away by the elements! Also listen out for Andy's regular June show later in the schedule, featuring a session from whole sky monitor and an exclusive live track from Eliza.

    Dubster:
    In this months Radiodubster, Steve and Brian pack their rucksacks and return to the Scottish borders to give you a flavour of the acts playing at this years Wickerman Festival in July including Miyagi, Actiongroup, Zoey Van Goey and some group called the Fall.
    We'll also be showcasing a few tracks from the Chamber Music album, a collection of no less than 36 different acts adaptations of James Joyce's love poems. Add to this tracks from Mittens on Strings, Magic Arm and Pleasant Grove, and you have 2 hours of aural heaven.
    OK boy's packed and ready? No, I think we can leave the smoking jackets and sherry glasses ...

    Mark Cunliffe:
    Jerry Hope was a key member of the dust collectors, a band who I think are the best Derby has ever produced. He died in April and this month I pay tribute to him by playing four tracks he was heavily involved in making.
    I also feature Sleaford mods as yet unreleased album "1 er then ennit". There is Four Tet remixing Thom Yorke, two cover versions, an unwitting array of dancehall, fabulous garage action from The Federals more from the Zim Kids series, Ruff Sqwad's latest 12”, King Soly dubstepping to great effect and some loveliness from The Mummers...

    Mark Whitby:
    In his June show, Mark previews the 2000 Trees festival, taking place in the idyllic setting of the Cotswolds, and featuring Art Brut, These New Puritans and The Anomalies, plus loads of others in what promises to be two days of fun and frolics in the English countryside.
    Away from the greenery and the sunshine, this three hour spectacular also features tracks from new (and new-ish) albums by the resolutely urban Fall, electronica from Bitstream, Pink Skull and Cinema du Lyon, Germany's trondheim, Ukraine's Younnat and a preview track from the forthcoming Stereolab album. All of which, along with a bottle of cheap cider and a piece of grass stuck in yer mouth, adds up to a cracking way of spending a summer's day (or night).

    Neil Jenkins:
    For June, Neil ditches the older records and concentrates on the newer stuff to help get through the wonderous backlog, including tracks from new albums by The Fall, Portishead, Half Man Half Biscuit, The Kills and a host of newer, less established bands and artists. This month's feature is the ME band.

    Pete Jackson:
    This month, Pete Jackson proudly presents The Rebellious Jukebox - a two-hour assault on the ears from the distant, and not so distant, past. As well as high-quality tunes from the 1930s (!) to a couple of years ago, you'll also hear my personal selection of the five best cover versions EVER. So if your idea of heaven is a jukebox that has everything from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Slowdive, from The 3 Johns to 1000 Homo DJs, you've found it. And you don't even have to put any 50ps in.

    Rachael Neiman:
    June’s edition of ‘The Rachael Neiman Experience’ is only an hour-long due to continuing hectic times at Cherryade Towers! But, what an hour it is! We talk about our recent adventures at Ladyfest London and play Peggy Sue and the Pirates in honour of it. We also have a feature on the forthcoming Strawberry Shortcake festival in Manchester and play some tracks from featured bands including Amida, Le Tetsuo, Puzzle and The Lovely Eggs.
    we also have top quality riot grrrl from Hooker, cute indiepop in the form of Woog Riots, Cars Can Be Blue, the new singles from My Sad Captains and Los Campesinos! And Keytarded with a beautiful keytar cover which knocks spots off the original, listen and see what you think!

    Rocker:
    Another packed three hour show from Rocker - This month there's an acoustic session recorded for the show by Violet Violet, as well as 5 (count 'em!) featured new LPs, all by artists played by John Peel.
    There's also new tracks from Calvin Party; The Manhattan Love Suicides; Eelke Kleijn; The Bumblebees; TV Smith; The Hillfields; Ghosts of Pasha; Zipper; Booka Shade; Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip; The School; The Udagawa Deal; and Lovingly Yours.
    The Parallelograms take on The Ramones; there's a Peel's Big 45 featuring Sly And Robbie; and there's a track from the debut LP by Minisnap - side project of The Bats from New Zealand.
    As well as little known acts.
    Here's this month's little known fact: A regulation golf ball has 336 dimples.

    Yank Sizzler:
    Let us peruse the recent recordings of The Black Angels, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Beach House, Dr. Dog, The Kinetiks, The Dirtbombs & Dark Meat as we comfortably snuggle up against classics from Sister Nancy, Son House, The Loved Ones, The Chob, 16 Horsepower, Godspeed You Black Emperor and many more. We also treat ourselves to some of the finest live renditions Calexico has put to tape. And finally I froth at the mouth as it appears that I will get to not only see Tom Waits in June, but the Vaselines as well. Life is grand and so is this show.
