  • My Top 20 Discoveries for 2009

    Dez 26 2009, 0h38 por Echylon

I wanna be sooooooo special. First ever journal entry, btw.

Unlike lots of people doing all this "Top 10 albums of 2009" stuff, I decided to make a list of, in my opinion, best bands/artists I got into during the year. And they haven't necessarily had to released an album this year, although most of them did and lots of the records contributed to me liking them. I also gonna write a small paragraph why I liked them so much aswell. Yay for last.fm for recommending some stuff to me and whatnot.

Notice that some of the artists mentioned below don't need to be in my library yet, cuz I haven't got time to listen to some of them cuz I've been listening to newer stuff., I guess.

    So yeah, let's start! :D

    -----

    #20 - Lady GaGa

One of the few pop artists I've found myself liking this year since I haven't been paying attention that much to this genre. The main reason that caused me to like Lady GaGa that much was the catchyness in her music and pretentiousness in her style. I also found the lyrics in some songs pretty ammusing. Sometimes her makeup is really annoying though.

    Favourite song: TocarJust Dance

    -----

    #19 - The Human Abstract

I got into this band when I was practically whoring techy stuff. And their record Nocturne certainly was a fest of techiness and prog. I actually got to see this band live together with Protest the Hero and The Chariot, but little did I know back then that their lead guitarist AJ left and they already had a new record out (Midheaven) which was a total letdown. I didn't really even bother to download the album to listen to it after I've seen it at the show and just listened to all the songs on Youtube.

Favourite song: Vela, Together We Await The Storm

    -----

    #18 - War From a Harlots Mouth

I am proud possessor of merch from this band <3. I came across this band simply by accident. A kinda lucky accident. I finally had found an actually good german band, since Tokio Hotel and some other teenie-bands totally ruined german music for me in general (not to speak of german rap people, fuck them). WFAHM's style of deathcore and the sometimes hysterically-seeming vocals were one of the most enjoyables I ever heard.

Favourite song: TocarIf You Want To Blame Us For Something Wrong, Please Abuse This Song!

    -----

    #17 - Cage the Elephant

One of the later discoveries for me this year, Cage the Elephant instantly made it into my Top 20, although I never liked music of that type. I mostly enjoyed their riffing style and its flow with the lyrical themes and vocal delivery. It's pretty hard to be more awesome than songs like TocarIn One Ear or TocarBack Against The Wall.

Favourite song: TocarAin't No Rest For The Wicked

    -----

    #15 - Chelsea Grin

I honestly don't really know why I like this band. Their riffs are typically deathcore. Their vocals are typically deathcore. Their lyrics are typically deathcore. So why liking them? Simply because they're fun to listen to I guess. I mean, I could listen for instance to Suicide Silence, cuz they also play seven string guitars and also have thair guitars tuned down to Drop A and also want to be brewtul, but I don't. O YA CHELSEA GRIN HAZ AWSUM GUTTURALZZZ.

    Favourite song: CrewCaBanger

    -----

    #14 - Ophira

I really unknown band that my friend sockonfire told me about back when they only had 2 untitled, vocal-less demo tracks on their MySpace. They got my interest because the guitar work sounded alot like Oceana. Then they got their vocalist and their style certainly kinda changed, but still the songs were really awesome and the progressive approach was really welcome. I hope these guys get signed or something. :D

    Favourite song: TocarOLD SON DEMO

    ----

    #13 - Closure In Moskow

I don't know why, but at first I kinda ignored that band after the first listen to their record First Temple. After a second and third listen I realized that this band actually playes really awesome progressive rock similar to the likes of The Mars Volta and The Dear Hunter. Can't really say much, except that they are really really fun to listen to. At certain doses though. It's not like I could listen to them for a whole day.

    Favourite song: TocarKissing Cousins

    ----

    #12 - Drop Dead, Gorgeous

SOAKED IN BLOOD ONLY TO BE STERILIZEDDDD. The only fact that this band released a concept album (I have a passion for concept albums for some reason) about a murderer instantly caught my attention. Then, I listened to the album. I liked it alot. The vocals was awesome and the guitars were simple yet effective. Then, I read the lyrics and fuck they were awesome cuz they really helped me imagining the murderer's personallity and feelings.

Favourite song: It Sounded Like An Accident

    ----

    #11 - Cynic

I guess this is one of the most influencial band in the progressive technical death metal genre. Paul Masdival, the guitarist and vocalist of Cynic that is, really impresses me as far as guitar playing and singing at the same time goes. Also the addittion of all those vocal effects give their sound a spacey feel which I really enjoy. Also not to forget the technicallity of course, hence the tag: progressive technical death metal.

    Favourite song: TocarIntegral Birth

    ----

K, from here it finally gets easier, cuz it's harder to pick the lower positions than the first ones >:l

    ----

    #10 - Veil of Maya

Screw people (pl0x don't be offended <3) that say Veil of Maya sound like Born of Osiris. VOM are miles ahead of BOO in my opinion. Also the play in Dropped B, which instantly awesome (except for Bring Me the Hairspray, sorry, Horizon). Also the vocals aren't as boring and the breakdowns are much more groovy (listen to Pillars, 2 min breakdown ftw!). Plus they don't have gimmicky keyboards. Veil of Maya, you are fucking awesome. Now release a new album.

Favourite track: Entry Level Exit Wounds

    ----

    #9 - Meshuggah

They actually use a bass string for the F sharp. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...
Meshugga are beast and that's the only appropriate way to call them. Bleed will melt your face away without you noticing it.

    Favourite track: Pravus

    ----

    #8 - Jonny Craig

At first I kinda hated his vocals on Relativity, probably cuz I didn't listen properly. After that I kinda forgot about him and Emarosa and old Dance Gavin Dance. Then I suddenly discovered that he released a solo album and thought "heck why not listening to it". Great descission I made there. For one, I discovered how awesome Jonny's vox are and for another I found an awesome album in A Dream Is A Question You Don't Know How To Answer.

    Favourite song: istillfeelher partIII

    ----

    #7 - The Veronicas

The second pop-band out of three in this Top 20 to be awesome enough for me to love. Lisa and Jess have skyrocketed themselves to place 10 by simply being as cute as they are. They make lovely music and actually play their instruments unlike most pop bands out there. Also I really love the diversity in their songs. In one song they can be cute (In Another Life) and in another pretentious (TocarPopular).

    Favourite song: Tocar4ever

    ----

    #6 - Taylor Swift

The last pop artist to be mentioned in this list. And she's definetely not the least. It actually was really hard to decide wether Taylor should get #7 or #6, but since I can personally relate to her songs more than I can to The Veronicas' she should get the higher spot. Taylor's songs are plain cute and awesome. My friend m4neater once said that Fearless is even better if you have a crush, and she is certainly right about this. <3

    Favourite song: TocarFearless

    ----

    #5 - Circa Survive

I'm kinda upset about people sometimes forgetting about the band and saying Circa Survive is JUST Anthony Green. Kinda like Bring Me the Whorizon, fuck this, Horizon with its shiny Oli Sykes. But it's not the case. Circa Survive actually has awesome instrumentation and Anthony's vocals awesomely suplement the whole package of fucking amazing music. And yeah if you do think Anthony Green is Circa Survive only, why not checking out his solo project that is also pretty awesome.

Favourite song: TocarStop the Fuckin' Car

    ----

    #4 - City Escape

I discovered this band only about 2 weeks ago and I gotta say that it's simply one of the best bands I've heard in the whole year. Obviously place #4 >_>. Their style of experimental ambient progressive post-hardcore is really something I've been loving as of late. Everything seems to fit in here. The vocals the guitars and the drumming. Pure love. My only complaint would be that their albums is kinda really short.

Favourite song: Now, The Hard Part

    ----

    #3 - Of Machines

Yet another band I had problems deciding which place it should get. Especially since Of Machines and City Escape are quite similar. But Dylan of Of Machines has blown me away with his vocal range like no other before. That's why Of Machines surpasses City Escape and gets my #3 for 2009. This was really really really close though.

    Favourite song: Lost In Translation

    ----

    #2 - Eisley

This band is plain adorable. I just can't say much, I just love them. <3

    Favourite song: TocarMy Lovely

    ----

    #1 - Oceana
NOT THE SINGER! I guess this would be pretty obvious. Despite this band isn't my number one in my charts right now, this is the best fucking band I have listened to this year. Wether it's [album artist=oceana]The Tide
or BIRTH.EATHER both albums have created a huge impact on me making me love literally everything about them. I actually had a shock period when they announced that they broke up.

Favourite song: TIES between Mindless Mindless, Hello Astronaut, Dead Speaker and The Abortion.
But in the end I love all the songs from them. <3

    ----

Well, this was my Top 20 bands/artists I got into liking in 2009. Thank you for reading the whole thing, if you did, and for checking this out. I hope you weren't bored while reading this. <3

Merry Christmas and a happy new year, I wuv u all. <3

  • 2009: The Year in Cognitive Dissonance

    Dez 24 2009, 10h10 por xynobia

I'll try and keep this short and sweet. Initially, when the idea for this mixtape came to me, I was already planning on how I'd defend such a mix well before I'd even finalized the featured songs themselves. This is the sign of an awesome mix (and a total pussy for a creator) is to be had! ANYWAY...here it is: my handpicked list of the best songs from 2009. The theme should be pretty apparent to anyone who is at least partially acquainted in pop music, extreme music, and/or blasphemous irony in either arena. It follows an identifiable pattern that, at least at first listen, puts itself in a position simultaneously alluring as it is grating. Convention is overrated, anyway.

Instead of a well-crafted defense for my tasteless decision to sandwich a Pissed Jeans song in between two American Idol darlings, here's some food for thought:

2009 was a hallmark year for metal. In spite of the fact that (so far) the 21st century has been extremely kind to, erm, extreme music, 2009 was the first year that I felt comfortable—nay, obligated—making a 'year end' compilation that wouldn't be padded with questionable content. Simply put, this was the type of year where you felt rewarded for being a fan of heavy music. And yet, in spite of the long list of awesome metal, hardcore and punk records that came my way this year, I still find myself humming beats by T.I. as often as ISIS riffs...

    In complete seriousness, I wonder:

Ten years from now, which song is more likely to conjure up positive memories of my 25th year: a stoner sludge dirge about throwing in the towel, or a 'girl power'-pop anthem about how you shoulda put a ring on it?

I guess we'll have to see. Meanwhile, let's boogie:

    1.)“TocarPaparazzi" – Lady GaGa *
2.)“TocarDark Horse” - Converge – Axe To Fall
3.)“Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” - Beyonce
4.)“TocarThrow In The Towel” - 16 – Bridges To Burn
5.)“Dead And Gone” - T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake
    6.)“Wild OX Moan” - Coalesce – OX **
7.)“TocarYou Belong With Me” (pop mix) – Taylor Swift
8.)“Human Upskirt” - Pissed Jeans – King of Jeans
9.)“TocarMy Life Would Suck Without You” - Kelly Clarkson
    10.)“TocarScapegoat” - Kylesa – Static Tensions
11.)“Sometime Around Midnight” - Airborne Toxic Event
12.)“TocarA Horse Called Golgotha” - Baroness – Blue Record
13.)“TocarRight Now (Na Na Na)” - Akon
14.)“TocarThe Creeper” - Pelican – What We All Come To Need
    15.)“Day N' Nite” - Kid Cudi
16.)“TocarHall of the Dead” - Isis – Wavering Radiant
    17.)“life your life” - T.I. featuring Rhianna
18.)“Badlands (Charles Starkweather & Caril Fugate)” - Church of Misery – Houses of the Unholy

There you have it...the best/worst/best-again songs from the year. 2009 was a dramatic year for me personally, professionally, but most of all musically...and this mix is a suitable token of just how monumental the year proved to be. And how badly I need to get my iPod replaced. Next year: less sugar, more sour.

Next week, I'll post a list of my top albums from 2009, in order...til then, enjoy the dissonance!

    * best pop song of 2009, hands fucking down.
** best non-Lady Gaga song of 2009, hands fucking down.

  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (12-20-09)

    Dez 23 2009, 22h20 por Carpetbagger513

    Last.fm Top Artists
For the first time this month, Brad Paisley made it up to #1 with 32 listeners, three more than the #2 artists – George Strait and Miranda Lambert – could manage. Lee Ann Womack (27) and the collective of Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride (all with 26) round out the Top 5. Joe Nichols had 16 listeners for the week, an improvement of 7 from the previous one. Shania Twain also gained some ground, moving up to 17 listeners from 12. Perhaps all of the talk about the best and worst of the ’00s had people reminiscing about when she was the hottest thing in music. Justin Townes Earle had 15 listeners to lead the Americana artists.

    Last.fm Top Albums
This week, Lambert’s Revolution shares the #1 spot with Carrie Underwood’s Carnival Ride, both with 15 listeners. Fearless from Taylor Swift was #2 with 14. The 9513’s Album of the Decade, That Lonesome Song by Jamey Johnson, had 10 listeners to put it at #9 with a host of others, including the Dixie Chicks‘ Home, Sara Evans‘ Real Fine Place and Sugarland’s Enjoy The Ride. They were all behind Kellie Pickler’s Small Town Girl, which had 11 listeners. Hopefully those 11 listeners are all regular fans and not Superfans who will leap to her defense for even the slightest little criticism. Only the cult of American Idol generates these kinds of Superfans; I could write one line stating that Justin Guarini wasn’t fit to sing in subway stations, and I’d get a response saying that I’m deaf and he’s twice the singer that Kelly Clarkson ever will be. Speaking of, Clarkson was at #17 on the list, as All I Ever Wanted tied with 13 other albums, including some of the best from this year: Earle’s Midnight At The Movies, Rosanne Cash’s The List and Strait’s Twang. At least it’s an improvement over Lady GaGa.

    Last.fm Top Tracks
Like most other places, Lady Antebellum is at #1 with 11 listeners for “Need You Now,” with Womack’s “Last Call” and Lambert’s “White Liar” right behind with 9 listeners. “TocarTemporary Home” by Carrie Underwood makes it up to #4 with 7 listeners. While it’s miles better than “TocarCowboy Casanova” (damning with faint praise, admittedly), it’s tied on The 9513 chart with 10 other songs that are better than it. That would include “Welcome To The Future” by Paisley, “Toes” by Zac Brown Band, “Someday I’ll Be Forgiven For This” by Earle and “Dead Flowers” and “Time To Get A Gun” by Lambert. While it’s not exactly a traditional Christmas carol, five people did listen to Merle Haggard’s “TocarIf We Make It Through December.”

    Billboard Country Songs
Lady Antebellum continues its dominance on the Billboard charts, with “Need You Now” staying at #1, while Reba McEntire moves up a spot to #2 with “Consider Me Gone.” There was quite a bit of movement in the lower half of the Top 10, as Tim McGraw moved from #8 to #6 with “TocarSouthern Voice,” Lambert moved from #10 to #8 with “White Liar,” and Jason Aldean and Darius Rucker entered the Top 10 with “TocarThe Truth” at #9 and “History In The Making” at #10. “Temporary Home” jumped 10 places to be at #26 after 3 weeks, and Easton Corbin has his first Top 20 hit, as “TocarA Little More Country Than That” moved up to #19. A couple of holiday songs also are moving up the charts quickly, with Rodney Carrington’s “TocarCamouflage And Christmas Lights” jumping from #52 to #39, and Rucker’s “Candy Cane Christmas” moving from #60 to #47.

    Billboard Country Albums
Fearless is still #1. And it was also the sales gainer for the week, which means that Taylor Swift has figured out a way to improve on being #1. It’s likely to hold that place for the next few weeks, with Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now being the biggest release in January. In the meantime, the band moved up to #3 with its self-titled debut. Frighteningly, the biggest chart jump was Rascal Flatts‘ Unstoppable, moving from #21 to #13. Not bad for a band whose latest single stiffed. Perhaps they’ve picked up that all-important CSI demographic.

    Americana Music Association Chart
Rosanne Cash’s death grip on the #1 spot with The List is about as strong as Fearless on the Billboard charts. It had 430 total spins this week, more than 50 over its closest competition. The only change in the Top 5 is that Yonkers NY by Chip Taylor moved to #5. While it stayed at #4, The Band of Heathens did reach a milestone with 5,500 total spins for One Foot In The Ether. That makes it the most-played album on the chart. John Fogerty’s The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again had a bit of a resurgence, moving up to #7 after a couple weeks of backsliding. Mountain Soul II by Patty Loveless also jumped up a couple to #12.

    On my charts:
30 different songs hit #1 this year.
8 different albums hit #1 this year.
8 different artists hit #1 this year.

The longest running #1 song was “LoveGame” by Lady GaGa (14 weeks).
The longest running #1 album was The Fame by Lady GaGa (28 weeks).
The longest running #1 artist was Lady GaGa (26 weeks).

The #1 song with the highest plays in one week was “Make Me” by Janet Jackson (221 plays the week ending September 20).
The #1 album with the highest plays in one week was The Fame by Lady GaGa (365 plays the week ending April 12).
The #1 artist with the highest plays in one week was Lady GaGa (440 plays the week ending April 05).

The #1 song with the lowest plays in one week was “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” by Janet Jackson/“Miss You Much” by Janet Jackson/“Without You” by Mariah Carey (13 plays each the week ending September 13).
The #1 album with the lowest plays in one week was The Blueprint 3 by Jay-Z (37 plays the week ending September 20).
The #1 artist with the lowest plays in one week was Jay-Z (58 plays the week ending September 06).

I'm surprised “You Belong With Me (Pop Mix)” and “Empire State Of Mind” never hit #1 on my weekly chart because I wore those songs OUT.

That random week Kylie was my #1 artist (the week ending May 10) was when she announced her North American tour.

Only my top 6 artists passed 1,000 plays for the year, although MJ's pretty close. My top 4 albums and top 2 songs passed 1,000 plays for the year.
