Seeing as I've just been on a downloading spree of random artists, I thought I'd make a little list of all of the stuff on my MP3 player right now. The actual thing is falling apart - I'm asking for an iPod this Christmas.

Bloc Party - Only two songs from them that I bought ages ago.
Blur - Downloaded these the other night.
Brain Damage - One free last.fm download. Oh yeah.
Chromeo - I bought their Fancy Footwork a while ago, and I still listen to a few of the tracks when I feel like it.
Danny Elfman - Through my obsession with Oingo Boingo, I've started listening to Danny's soundtracks. I've got stuff from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Taking Woodstock, The Nightmare Before Christmas and a few other random tracks.
Devo - Of course. I don't have many of their songs, but I got a few new ones the other night. I just heard Wiggly World for the first time yesterday, and I just had to get it right away.
Dracula Biscuits - Last.fm free downloads, again. ^,____,^
Elastica - After reading about them on Mookychick, I felt like downloading some of their stuff. It's all awesome, but then I always think I've got Wire on my MP3 player.
Green Day - No, not their new stuff. Two songs I quite like - Longview and a live version of Minority.
Kate Bush - Only a few tracks, but really epic ones. I put on some tracks from Aerial that I remember listening to when my dad bought the album. Also, I had to put on Wuthering Heights.
Kraftwerk - Thanks to a particular user here putting the video of Pocket Calculator in a group discussion, I've found that I quite like them. I've only got that and another track, though. I need to try and listen to more of their stuff.
Lemon Demon - I don't listen to them as much now, but I still have a few songs.
Logan Whitehurst & the Junior Science Club - Last.fm free downloads...but very good ones.
Magazine - I only have The Great Beautician in the Sky, but it's awesome.
Messer Chups - Awesome free downloads.
Naughty Zombies - Free downloads.
Oingo Boingo - Ah hah hah hah hah! My favourites. You can probably tell that Boingo dominates my library. I've got over 100 OB tracks on my MP3 player right now. A lot of them are live tracks - the best ones, obviously.
Polysics - From a while back. I bought about three of their albums ages ago.
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Downloaded a few the other night. I think I need to listen to more.
Sparks - I saw Kimono My House in a music store a week ago for £5 and had to get it straight away. It was an awesome buy.

The B-52's - Bought their self-titled album at the same time I bought the Sparks album. Also a fiver, also awesome.

some thoughts on these strange self reflexive songs i have been writing

i’ve always loved john cage’s 4’ 33”. not so much for the point made about the relative status and ultimate impossibility of silence but for the way in which the audience come to create the piece in some measure accidently, to embody it’s principle through the performance.....

in early talking heads david byrne always sang as if he was outside looking in – a kind of anxious, disinterested (unpoetic) poetry of the mundane and absurd.....

i was always weirdly thrilled by kylie minogue’s ‘can’t get you out of my head’ not because of the way that it expresses the obsessive first flush of love (though it does that really well too) but because it is a kind of pure pop tautology – it puts it’s addictive primary hook precisely where you can’t get it out of your head and then it tells you so. along with other aspects of her person, i just find that sexy.....

i love pavement, mainly because they were brilliant in too many ways to itemise. but stephen malkmus is particularly brilliant at splicing his lyrics with little asides as to the artifice of the song itself – occasionally he just steps out of it completely and waves at you, tongue firmly in cheek. ‘stereo’ is the most obvious point of reference but it’s listening to ‘gold soundz’ when he announces, at precisely the point you know it’s coming, that they are ‘..coming to the chorus’ that i usually fall off my stool or spit my museli all over my lap.....

i always come back to analogies with painting because its my background i guess. i think of lyrics like figures, like recognizable objects or motifs on a canvas, a window into somewhere else. i think i kind of want to bust the window or, as i tried to do with different painting and photography projects, to point at the exact moment of looking or being in some way - or at least acknowledge the fictional construct of the song, that ‘other’ or ‘elsewhere’ space of the song.

i am fascinated by the present because I don’t understand it, I am forever behind it or just in front of it begging myself to look at it, retaining only a sense of it momentarily, though I intimate some kind of profound grace there.
