So, unless you don't listen to Christian music and/or you've been hiding under a rock, you know that Newsboys
have a new lead singer. Long-time lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and founding member Peter Furler
has stepped down from touring and will be keeping things running at home. The new lead singer is Michael Tait
, most famously of legendary but in-hiatus Christian group DC Talk
but also the frontman of Tait
band and artist-at-large on lots of other recordings, like !Hero: The Rock Opera
. Newsboys with Mike Tait were in Tulsa last week, and we went out to see them. We had a GREAT time!
I was actually not that terribly excited about the concert... not because I didn't think Tait could handle it, because we've seen him live several times and I knew he is awesome. I think my problem was that the Newsboys' latest CD, In The Hands Of God
, kind of leaves me cold. There are a few fun songs on it, but it's no Not Ashamed
or Take Me To Your Leader
. I was really happy with Thrive
, but the new one just doesn't particularly float my boat. Mikey and Cathy love it, though, so maybe I'm just too picky!
So we got our tickets, and I knew it was not a good sign when I got sixth-row balcony tickets the day before the concert. Mabee Center can hold like 11,000 people, but when we got there it can't have been more than a couple or three thousand folks there at most. Even with the upper ring darkened, it still was looking kind of empty. The fans were mostly around my age, too, which doesn't tend to be the demographic a Christian rock band looks for (I'm nearly 40). But a small turnout doesn't necessarily mean a bad show... it was a GREAT show!
