DAY TWO OF THE FALLS FESTIVAL (30th December)

The second day of the Falls Festival brought some mighty cold weather, which featured some rain in the late morning. The festival was set up very nicely, with the Tent Stage on the top of the hill that the festival site was on, and the main stage on the bottom of the valley. After the rain cleared, The John Steel Singers made their way onto the main stage of the Lorne Festival. The Steel Singers put on very solid performance, which featured their final song of the set, including other band members from, The Vasco Era, The City Riots, Tame Impala and Art V Science.

We then ventured to the top of the valley, to the Tent Stage. I end of Melbourne’s Dash & Will set…and then patiently waited for The Falls Festivals comedy club to begin. Today’s first few comedians were Danny Mcginlay, Hannah Gasby, and Tommy Dasalo…who all put on very average performances. SoKo’s set was next, but Soko’s band took quite some time to set the instruments up. And by the time the act had started the band was at least 15 minutes over the organised starting time. A packed out Tent welcomed the French Singer/Songwriter to a huge applause. With only two hits under her belt, and no albums released it was a great turn out. Soko begun her performance with ‘I Think I’m Pregnant’, which then followed with her wearing a Tiger rug over her head/shoulders and telling the crowd sarcastically that the next song was a very serious song, which was called ‘I Wanna Look Like A Tiger’. It was not long into Soko’s set when she performed (on Ukulele) her biggest hit yet, ‘I’ll Kill Her’, which has even ventured onto the airwaves of Australian commercial radio. The song featured a huge crowd sing-along, and was by far the best moment of the show. Soko is basically unknown overseas, but she has a real cult following which was proved by the turn out at her Falls Festival performance. Thanks to the approval of the Falls Festival staff , Soko was allowed to play 30 minutes after her set was meant to finish according to the timetable. Soko then took crowd request which led her to play the track, ‘My Ex-Boyfriends’. Overall, musically and vocally, Soko is not great, but she gets over with the crowd by her cuteness which makes you adore her.

    Soko setlist: (Rough memory)
    I Think I'm Pregnant
I Wanna Look Like A Tiger
    Goodbye Paris
    Baby Cat
    Vegan Song
    I’ll Kill Her
    Wet Dreams
    Hard To Be Alone
    My Ex-Boyfriends
I Will Never Love You More
    Everybody's Seeking for Happiness

After Soko I caught a little of The Drones’ set, although the sound was not great at all and led me to not enjoy the performance. The Holidays were the next band I saw, and they were surprisingly much better than last time I watched them perform. They act and sounded like a band from England, and their music was very well influenced by UK’s indie pop scene. The voice of the lead singer sounded like he was from Sheffield indie band, Milburn.

I got a decent position in the middle of the front sector of the crowd to watch Canada’s Tegan and Sara who were very impressive singing songs such as ‘The Con’, ‘Walking With A Ghost’ and ‘Back In Your Head’. During the set, one brave punter yelled out “I want to have your babies” to the duo. Tegan/Sara replied, “I would be more likely to say yes to having sex, rather than have babies with you”. The Canadian singer then asked the crowd member what his name was, and after his reply said, “well…I was going to name my first name after you, but that is a horrible name”. Faker took the stage next, and frontman, Nathan Hudson, provided an energetic sixty minute set for the Lorne crowd. The Sydney rockers played tracks such as ‘Sleepwalking’, ‘Are You Magnetic’ and ‘Hurricane’, although the climax of the set came during the bands final track ‘This Heart Attack’.

After Faker I went back into the Tent Stage where Australian indie/hip-hop artist, Snob Scrilla had the crowd at his feet. I was not expecting too much from Snob Scrilla, but the atmosphere turned it into a great and memorable show. Snob Scrilla played his single (rotating on the Triple J playlist), Chasing Ghosts, as well as some new material including a catchy tune called ‘I’ll Never Change’. Later on in his forty minute set, Snob called upon Aussie duo Dash & Will to help dance to one of his songs. Overall an impressive set from an upcoming Aussie talent.

The final act I saw on our first day was Brighton lads, The Kooks. I was quite a distance away from the stage and that affected the amount I enjoyed the set as the atmosphere was non-existent. The set begun with Konk’s major single, ‘Always Where I Need To Be’, which followed through to some classic tracks including ‘Eddie’s Gun’ and ‘Ooh La’. Other songs performed were, ‘Sway’, ‘See The Sun’, ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’, ‘One Last Time’, ‘I Want You Back’, ‘Mr Maker’, ‘Shine On’ and the very-popular ‘Naïve’. I still feel The Kooks are not at their best when at a festival, their live solo shows are much more striking.

DAY THREE OF THE FALLS FESTIVAL (31st December)

My second day of the festival begun at the Tent Stage with Melbourne act, Skipping Girl Vinegar. It was a very pleasant and relaxed set, which had the majority of the crowd sitting down watching the performance. Next-up New Zealand’s, Cut Of Your Hands were playing some rocking tunes at the Falls Festival Main Stage. They played potential indie classics, ‘Still Fond’ and ‘Oh Girl’ and filled the rest of their set with tracks from their debut album, ‘You & I’, such as ‘Happy As Can Be’, ‘Let’s Get Out Of Here’ and ‘Expectations’. The set also included a cover of The Sonics’ ‘The Witch’.

The Tent Stage was getting ready for their second day of comedy acts, which included Michael Chamberlin, Josh Thomas and Triple J’s Sam Simmons. All three put on enjoyable and funny sets. The three-piece indie-folk American band, The Dodos’ followed the comedy performances. I wasn’t familiar with any of their music, but they percussion beats of their music were just remarkable to watch (especially with our front row position). I stayed after the Dodos’ to catch the second dose of comical acts which included Michael Chamberlin do a small comedy routine and then introduce Will Anderson who received a massive cheer from the packed out tent. Will’s comedy routine was definitely the best of the festival.

Unfortunley I missed out on seeing the Mystery Jets due to Will Andersons comedy act, but I was in time to catch Architecture in Helsinki. Their performance was entertaining and featured their crowd-pleasing singles ‘Hold Music’ and ‘Heart It Races’. The latter electrified the crowd to an amazing moment, which had the crowd going wild for the Aussie act. Towards the end of the Northcote group’s set, they covered a Matthew Wilder classic, ‘Break My Stride’.

The next two acts to grace the main stage were two bands I wouldn’t usually listen to at all, Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed & The True Loves and Blue King Brown. Although thanks to a few beers, it was a little more enjoyable. The Falls Festival’s new year parade was interesting to say the least, which involved a parade of floats which were made by the festival-goers. The floats included the strange man-eating-cock transvestite, and a dragon (which people were throwing rubbish into its mouth). After the parade Santogold set started, but she didn’t appear on stage until 15 minutes later, instead a DJ filled up her set. This could of possibly been because Santogold does not have enough material to fill her 45 minute timeslot.

For The Grates set I had a good position a few rows back from the front. The performance was pretty good, and it included songs such as ‘Science Is Golden’, ‘Aw Yeah’, ‘Burn Bridges’, ‘Inside Outside’ and their Triple J hit, ’19-20-20’.

Gomez performed on the main stage after The Grates, but since I didn’t have much interest in Gomez, I waited till Franz Ferdinand before returning back to a viewing spot. Franz Ferdinand were due on stage at 11:45pm, but it was a few minutes before midnight and the crowd were getting restless. What seemed to e a last minute decision had the organisers of the event, along with some of the day’s musical artists on stage to do the countdown to the new year (although I could of sworn that it was midnight before The Falls Festival counted down to the new year). It struck midnight, and it seemed a little uneventful, it should have been organised better…but not that it mattered now, as Franz Ferdinand ran onto the stage and produced a class performance which begun with ‘Do You Want To’. The set included non-stop bouncing tunes featuring ‘The Fallen’, ‘The Dark Of The Matinée’, ‘Jacqueline’ and of course THAT crowd-pumping tune, ‘Take Me Out’, which became the highlight of the festival. Franz Ferdinand was a good choice for the main event of the early hours of January 1st, and put the festival to a climax. Sure, they didn’t play my favourite “new” song from their upcoming album, but it was a great effort from the Scottish rockers.

    Best performers of the festival:
    Franz Ferdinand – 8.5/10
    Faker- 8/10
Soko – 7/10 (Of course, not for her music ability, but for the enjoyment)

  • How eclectic is your musical style?

    Mai 8 2007, 13h13 por feeljolly

It appears every page I go to now theres linkage to someone doing this quizzy thing. It seems rather futile imo but what the hell its all in good fun.

    ........

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

    My eclectic score is currently

    82/100

  • Big Day Out 07- If you wait I'll give all my aches to you...

    Jan 29 2007, 5h37 por glassandahalf

This had been one of the best BDO's in years. Heres how it all went down...

Chris and I woke early, and managed to get the train out there at a reasonable hour. Actually, our train wasnt even full - the joys of going before 11am...
We rushed inside and made our way over to the Green Stage to check out Laura Imbruglia , the girl with fantastic lyrics, country punk sensibillities, gorgeously straight up crowd banter and an amazingly concerned expression on her face as she sings. Her, with a guitarist that was missing at the New Pornographers show, probably crowds the music a little too much, but then again, it could have just been the trappings of playing on such a large stage that her vox got drowned out a bit... Regardless, it was a pleasant way to start the day.

Over to the V Local Produce Stage (where the Lillypad used to be, and the site of last years awesome Bit By Bats show). Who was there? Tucker B's, a band I knew Chris would adore, and something I needed confirmation on - could they be as rad as when we saw them at The Green Room that time? You know what? They were better here. Absolutely supurb in every aspect, they are a rock band that treads the line between beauty and chaos, funk and rawk and math rock and pop. The only lowlight was a flag-laiden loser continually jumping on stage, messing about with security, harrasing people that wouldnt join in his mexican wave, and generally being a dick. Luckily this was the exception - for the most part, the crowd did me really well throughout the day, but more on that later.

We went and got our wristbands - the banding area now located in the old Boiler Room in what might be overkill, but is actually quite efficient... And from there, we went to see Macromantics. Missing all but three of her songs, she had whipped the crowd at the Hothouse into a frenzy, especially with Scorch at the end... Good stuff.

We went and lined up for a beer, and came back for what was undoubtably the hightlight of the day - That One Guy - who played the magical pipe, as seen in the picture that probably this text wont wrap around but hey...

Its kind of a half theramin, half sampler, and loaded up in it are some of the phattest basslines, wickedest breaks and a million other tricks that basically allow him to make a one man hectic drum jam, that looks amazing, is incredibly creative, and most of all, exceedingly fun. Completely original, charming and joyful, That One Guy had me running for the merch booth, and I bought his cd, sadly 7 years old now, but still incredibly rad, called "Songs in the key of Beotch"

Realising that we were actually two of the worst metalheads in the world, having missed Trivium, at least getting some pop punk emo schmemo into us could make up for our horrid blasphemy, and so we headed back to the Local Produce stage to catch Something With Numbers. Only we couldnt get in. The kids were hanging from the rafters (literally, aparantly), and in a scene reminiscent as to when the Hilltop Hoods played the Hothouse 2 years ago, Numbers had a massive crowd, lapping up every moment of it. Seeing as we couldnt see a thing, let alone get withing 10 metres of being inside the actual audatorium, we bailed down, got a drink, and the biggest shock of the day happened.

I heard two or three three tracks performed by The Drones, one of the worlds most deathly dull recorded bands, and found out why people rate them... Live they are off the chain... Pure rock and roll courses through every fibre of their being, and apart from one song where the drummer was really really out of time, they kicked my preconceptions back to whence they should have remained... to a garbage planet several hundred light years away...

Still, we were at that stage (green/converse) to see Faker. And once again the band I consider one of Australia's best failed to get their sound right in a festival setting. The big stage doesnt suit them, but there is to be no blaming sound guys - this is a consistant problem that Faker have, and one that detracts from the impact of their really wonderfully anthemic songs...

Skipping away as Hurricane was played, we got across the The Boiler Room and saw Lilly Allen, who put on an excellent show. 8 Peice band, wonderful stage presence, and it was so nice to be in there for both Alfie and Smile...

We cut her short though for a bit of TZU. Walking in to hear the accapella of the best verse from Recoil, they then broke into "Fuck You" (their song for Johnny and George) and really played the crowd well. Twas pleasant, and made me really think that out of all of them TZU are my fav aussie hip hop act, followed by The Herd, and Curse ov Dialect...

Fearing Peaches after last time she was here, Chris and I stuck around for DJ Gedo Super Mega Bitch Mrs Flint 4, who played funky house, which was pleasant enough, and electro house, which got the kids coming in. Possibly the hottest girl to ever be armed with a laptop and wear a bikini and mega boots, we stuck around at the end as she graciously signed our stubby holders... This dude comes over and chris picks it "Oh, do you two know each other" and the guys all like "Yeah, thats my wife" and then it clicked that it was Keith Flint from the Prodigy and his wife had just signed my You am I stubby holder, and OH MY FUCKING GOD! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Yeah, noone else seemed to care either...

Anyway, we ran away whooping and cheering and yelling and being the best people ever, and copped a bit of Kasabian. Man they are a great band. They totally know big stage sound. They are one of those mega bands that will be immensely popular for a long time, and in 3 or 4 years time a whole bunch of people are going to be amazed that they were not topping the bill on the main stage... But yeah, solid, excellent performance from them...

We got told we should check out Snowman, and to be honest, this was the first band that was a real disapointment. Messy, sludgy rock, that just seemed so much less mature or thought out than Tucker B's earlier in the day... So we bailed and went and checked John Cooper Clark over at the Lillyworld stage. A fantastic Post Punk Beat Poet, he told the best haiku ever, the made us laugh, and most of all told some really cool poetry... If there was not to be an EAR stage this year, at least there was this.

We went and caught Justice, and mainly rocked the bar line - waiting for beers... luckily they played We Are Yr Friends, and so we could get out of there quickly, fulifilled that we got to yell really loud, and thats all you really ever need.

From there it was back to Lillyworld to see if we could see Keith Flint and go out for a drink with him and his wife a bit later, but his set sucked and we left.

And from there it was a green/converse way to finish the day. Something for Kate rule my world, always and forever, and we might have missed a couple of their songs, but Deja Vu was my highlight, and they looked really really happy on stage, all of them... im glad - i think things are really good in the world of SFK, and thats a grand grand thing.

Finally, I stuck around somewhere long enough to see You Am I. The classic Australian band, I had never seen them to this point, and wow. They have got over their hardcore troubles of 2 years ago, and Timmy and the boys played well... It only really hit me however just how rad this band is when the fuzz guitar and the words "If half of what im saying, of what im saying is TRUE", and you realise that sure, you have a million friends in a million bands that try and be exactly like You Am I, but these guys are the band that everyone trys to bite the style of, and wow, they do a really really good job of being themselves. That probably makes no sense, but it does to me, and gosh it was a satisfatctory show. And yeah, you need Berlin Chair live before you die.

The Violent Femmes finsihed the day. They played Kiss Off, Add It Up and Blister In The Sun. The crowd rejoiced, and we went home with happy heads, despite the blisters and chafing...

One of the most pleasant Big Day Outs in recent memory.

    A few notes...
The number of Flag Wearing Idiots was about 300% reduced from the year before.
The 2 at a time beer limit is annoying, but it cut down the number of drunken dickheads dramatically - by about 50% id say, and thats an immense reduction
Staying away from the main stage apart from a brief look at My Chemical Romance was possibly the best thing ive ever done at a BDO
Just having 2 people in yr crew is awesome.
Lily Allen had the best merch, though the girls Violent Femmes top was hotter than spicy sambal, and those diplo shirts werent too bad either...

Anyway, that should tide you over... any questions? Big Day Out
