I’ve just passed my first year on Lastfm. There are two great things about it – discovering new music and sharing it with other people (thanks for all the shouts in the past 12 months guys).

This got me thinking about other ways I’ve discovered music down the years. Here’s how I got into some acts that have stayed with me down the years (and a few I've left behind):

My older brothers handed down tapes led me toThe Rolling Stones, Neil Young and The Moody Blues.

Borrowing from public libraries got me into Pere Ubu, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, Dory Previn and Bob Dylan.

Listening to Capital Radio in the late ‘70s, especially Nicky Horne and Peter Young led me to: John Cooper Clarke, Ian Dury, The Specials, Bruce Springsteen.

Friends mixtapes, especially in the ‘80s, gave me: Julian Cope, Magazine, Monochrome Set, Marillion

From John Peel in the ‘80s I got too many to count but he’s where I first heard: The Fall (of course), Shop Assistants, Half Man Half Biscuit, Jesus & Mary Chain, Nirvana, Ivor Cutler and John Fahey

Festivals and support slots have always held their surprises and led to my first encounters with (amongst others) Phranc, Robyn Hitchcock, Grandaddy and Tricky

These days, it’s BBC 6Music who’ve given me: Howling Bells, LCD Soundsystem, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Hot Chip.

And on to Lastfm: The Grateful Dead (OK, I knew who they were but I’d never sat and listened), Okkervil River, TISM, Oingo Boingo, Al Stewart and who knows what next.

I can't wait to find out

Some days I just have a hankering for profanity.

Today's one of those days. I just feel the need to hear music with lots of swearing or I start to get twitchy. Maybe there's a connection between that and how my day at work's going. I have so much work to do that I can feel it like a physical weight on my shoulders, and I can't even catch up on the weekend because I'll be away. I also had to ring up three people and tell them that they didn't get my job. It was a little depressing for me, although I'm sure it was much worse for them. Out of this I guess comes the need for flippancy, to hear Quan singing that he's sucked a lot of cock to get where he is (all tongue in cheek, I'm sure), or TISM telling us how he might be bad but he's not that bad (you know the song I mean).

I know it's wrong, but that TISM song with the C-word in it is just so hilarious. I usually hate the C-word but in this case the song truly is a valid social commentary. I've always liked to think of TISM as the intellectual schoolboy nemeses of Kevin Bloody Wilson. I could probably include nearly all their songs because they love to swear, but granted, some of them are just truly awful.

Regurgitator's I Piss Alone is also another funny one. I have to smile because, well, I do. Unit was a fairly profane album for them. Apart from The World of Sleaze, a song about brothels, there's I Will Lick Your Arsehole, and Polyestergirl, about a blow up sex doll. Skip forward to Eduardo and Rodriguez Wage War on T-Wrecks, and you've got the smart (and mildly sacreligious) Fuck the Goddamn World, one of my favourite 'gurge songs of all time. One of the tracks on Mish Mash! is My Computer Crashed, which has the simple message of "my computer crashed / oh fuck it's broken". There are heaps better tracks but that one sticks in my head easily because I listened to it repeatedly last year when my work computer died and I hadn't made a backup for two weeks. Ouch.

I think partially it's because of the humour that's contained within most of these songs, but it's also because all my old windows of opportunity to listen to this type of music are closing, particularly here at work. While I'm training my replacement I won't be able to listen to any music, let alone a song like Regurgitator's The World of Sleaze. Of course, I can't listen to that music at home either. Soon the whole genre will be consigned to the car trip between home and work, and vice versa. At 6 minutes each way (7 if there's traffic) that leaves just about time for 2 whole songs.

I should make the most of my time while I still have it and buy a really good pair of headphones for my iPod.
