The Blue Hearts (ブルーハーツ, Burū Hātsu?) was a popular Japanese punk rock band.
In 2004, HMV listed The Blue Hearts as the 19th most successful and influential Japanese music group. [1]
Its members were Hiroto Kōmoto (vocalist), Masatoshi Mashima (guitarist), Jun’nosuke Kawaguchi (Bassist) and Tetsuya Kajiwara (Drummer). Formed in 1985, the group made its major debut in May 1987 and released its first self-titled record. They went on to release 7 more albums. Having started out on an indie label each subsequent record sold more copies with their last recording selling in the millions. They were seen as controversial in Japan, where antics such as using the Japanese word for crazy, an expletive in their culture, and spitting in television cameras got them banned from TV for a year. The same year, in 1995, The Blue Hearts broke up. Komoto and Mashima went on to became the founding members of another band, The High-Lows.
Many of their songs were popular. Two most well known are “Train-Train” and “Linda Linda” which can be found on many karaoke machines. A cover version of their song Linda Linda was used in the 2005 Nintendo DS video game Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, the 2004 drama Sekai no chūshin de, ai wo sakebu, the High-School Dorama Gachi Baka and the 2005 film Linda Linda Linda, the premise of which is a group of high school students band while practicing The Blue Hearts’ songs for a school concert, and their songs “Train-Train” and “Hitoni Yasashiku” have been featured in the Konami arcade games Drummania and Guitar Freaks.
