Gira said that his whole bleak pulse thing was an attempt to create a sound that was "graceful and ill-tempered, like a swan", or something to that effect. And when you look at their stylistic changes, from the post punk experimentalism through the folk sound and on to whatever artsy else it is that they did, you find that it is this 'elegance of ill-temper' concept that Swans retained throughout. Since elegance or grace is a musical value in the classical sense, Swans and the anti-music of Throbbing Gristle are aesthetically at odds. I think the confusion between the two usually arises from people being pop-conditioned musical pussies who interpret any deviance from classical aesthetics - no matter how incomplete, no matter the degree - as being synonymously "harsh" and therefore indistinguishable.

Throbbing Gristle is musically ad-hoc. The output sound ranges from proto-noise to proto-synthpop in the space of individual albums. The only unifying element of the presentation is their deliberate and constant use of musical metaphor, allegory, and direct reference to 'systemization' and 'dehumanization'. What people call "industrial" today can descend from either the sounds or from the aesthetic, but relatively few bands deploy both to any significant extent. While I do sort of agree with stormchasar in that the Greed / Holy Money cycle manages to evoke something similar, I'd observe that industrial as a genre should not have a monopoly on this type of thing any more than Robocop can be called an "industrial" film. What we're hearing there is a noisy, drony, post-punk band fixated on a typically 80s decadence-corruption theme. There's none of the Dada typical of industrial music involved.

Early Swans could only be described as "industrial" with Throbbing Gristle's whole "industrial music for industrial people" aesthetic of dehumanization in mind -- commentary more than what it actually sounds like. Not many bands aside from Einstürzende Neubauten sound authentically like anything that could be called "industrial music".

@stormchasar - Cabaret Voltaire were the first band that came to my head. You're being slightly pedantic because they were both around at about the same time. Besides, I don't think it matters who was before who because that wasn't the point I was making. I'm pretty sure Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire are considered the "pioneers" as well as the "inventors" (although invention is a contentious term when it comes to art). To be a pioneer means to "pave the way for others to follow", which seems to fit Throbbing Gristle more than Swans.
