Tue 14 Apr – Supersuckers, Nashville Pussy

To the Thekla, for a rock n roll double header that only comes to these shores once in the proverbial blue moon.

Obligatory alcohol related comment: good on the place getting the Bath Ales bottles in. Bad on them for closing the bar in the main room for a while for some unknown reason, until they realized that was a really stupid idea.

Opening proceedings were Nashville Pussy, who gave a raw and dirty mix of southern, blues and punk rock, simple, direct and effective. With a set that drew heavily from their two most recent releases with a few older tracks thrown in for good measure, middle album Say Something Nasty falls victim. No covers, or indeed stripteases this time, no doubt due to time constraints, but it was still an impressive performance in how to play good old fashioned southern fried rock. Full on and in yer face, no thrills, no messing around, just a real good time.

In comparison, Supersuckers were a little more rock n roll and a little less rough and dirty. Again, a sizable chunk of the set is drawn from their latest two albums, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. With a slightly more laid back approach to their rock, the self-proclaimed greatest rock and roll band in the world blasted through a set that was a slick example of powerful punk up rock anthems with a hint of country. Indeed, when Eddie Spaghetti swaps his bass for an acoustic guitar, we get a brief country interlude. Just enough for a change of pace with a couple of songs before the rock is restored. There’s a cover of The Cowboy Song and an extended version of Born with a Tail finish off the night. Sadly, there’s no patented Supersuckers fake encore or indeed Creepy Jackalope Eye, but I think we can forgive them on this night.

That’s two cracking bands with two rocking performances, one a little southern fried, the other a little more bbq. Same again next year?

  • Top 50 Artists Survey

    Abr 23 2009, 15h42 por inkablot

I thought this survey thing would end up being more reflective than it actually was.

    10 Nov 2008, 21:05
    1. How did you get into 25?
Jawbreaker - I was really into MTX, Crimpshrine and Operation Ivy, and was checking out other Berkley/Gilman Street Bands. Go figure; Jawbreaker ended up being even more enduring in my life than the others.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Eagles of Death Metal - Probably "TocarI Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)". It made me shake my boot-ay then and now..

    3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
Pegboy- "I've seen so many passing ways I see our whole lives slip away And I want you back right now"

    4. What is your favorite album by 49?
Los Straightjackets - I like the songs on Supersonic Guitars in 3-D best, but The Velvet Touch Of Los Straitjackets is their most accomplished studio album.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
KISS - Oh jesus, this is embarrassing, but I own twenty KISS albums on vinyl. They only had three arguably good albums, but I just love how cheesy these guys are. They are my childhood, man!

    6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Elvis Costello - Probably "TocarWelcome To The Working Week". "Allison" is too obvious, but amazing as well.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
    David Bowie - "Aladdin Sane"

    8. What is your favorite album by 15?
Pixies - Doolittle, without a doubt.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Lifetime - It's always been "Bringin' It Backwards"

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
The Rolling Stones - Their cover of "TocarJust My Imagination" is so much fun!

    11. What is your favorite album by 40?
Wire - Pink Flag. I don't really like any other Wire albums, just that one.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
The Detroit Cobras - God, I just like to hear Rachel Nagy's sultry voice! But the one that comes to mind is "Hot Dog (Watch Me Eat)". Hahaha!

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
MF DOOM - Pulling apart the lyrics and explaining all the 80s geek references to a Jamaican friend of mine who was barely alive in that decade.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38?
Man Or Astro-Man - "Song of the Two-Mile Linear Particle Accelerator Stanford University, Stanford,…", mostly because of the way they introduced it at a show here. "Stanford has a particle accelerator, what do you have, Philly?"

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
J Church - There are more J Church songs that make me sad, but I guess "TocarIvy League College" has always made me smile. I used to set my turntable on repeat and play that side of the 7" over and over.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
Jawbreaker - Just once, unfortunately. In Columbus, OH, while attending college.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Fugazi - I don't remember. Probably "Waiting Room". Still one of my favorites.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Tiltwheel - The Twice The Dose split album. Three of my favorite songs of theirs are on there.

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Clash - Joe Strummer, of course.

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Supersuckers - Several times, and good lord they rock the crowd's ass every time!

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
The Stooges - I think I had sex while listening to "TocarI Wanna Be Your Dog" once. Or maybe I just wish I did.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16?
The Who - I really like "Tocar1921" from Tommy. I can't wait until 2021 so I can say " I feel like '21 is going to be a good year"

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
The Replacements - "Androgynous". I don't even think I knew it was the Replacements at the time.

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
Radon - 28, which I always thought was a self titled album. It's so hard to read the album cover.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
Broccoli - "All Smiles". Wow, what a band!

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Angry Samoans - "TocarBallad Of Jerry Curlan". On college radio. Uncensored. No joke.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
The Stooges - Raw Power, no question.

    28. What is your favorite song by 2?
The Dirtbombs - "TocarMy Love for You". Especially live.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
Agent Orange - "TocarBloodstains", just like everyone else.

    30. What is your favorite song by 8?
The King Khan And BBQ Show - "Waddlin' Around".

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Dillinger Four - At least five. The best one was at the Pontiac where we hung out and played PlayStation with them at the bar before they went on stage.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Descendents - "TocarPep Talk". I think I'll listen to it now.

    33. What is your favorite album by 12?
Misfits - Walk Among Us. It makes me want to skate.

    34. What is the worst song by 48?
Flag of Democracy - There's this one that the bassist Dave sings live; I think "If The Scene Was A Horse We'd Shoot It". It's not very good.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
Bad Brains - "TocarPay To Cum". I knew I had to hear more.

    36. What is your favorite album by 48?
Flag of Democracy - Hate Rock

    37. What is your favorite song by 36?
Sicko - "TocarHigh Hopes". The lyrics are just so great.

    38. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Social Distortion - "Mommy's Little Monster". I feel old.

    39. What is your favorite album by 7?
Snuff - Reach. Meet the old Duncan, same as the new Duncan.

    40. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
    The Jam - "TocarNon-Stop Dancing"

    41. What is your favorite album by 29? The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society

  • Supersuckers - Get It Together

    Dez 2 2008, 14h28 por mshannes

    Supersuckers
    Supersuckers...
The Greatest Rock `n` Roll Band in the World“ bezeichnet.

  • Tuesday Ten: Drugs

    Out 16 2008, 6h27 por amodelofcontrol

[Apologies for the late posting of this]

The late Bill Hicks probably had it right when he espoused his views on the links between musicians and drugs.

You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years — rrreal fucking high on drugs. The Beatles were so fucking high they let Ringo sing a few tunes.
And so I found, when I started casting around for suggestions for this list. It didn't take long (with the assistance of my girfriend and a few workmates) to have way over twenty suggestions for this list, and needless to say I got loads more once it went onto my LJ.

Obviously, and thankfully, perhaps, not all songs about drugs (and in drugs I mean legal and illegal, including cigarettes, alcohol, prescription drugs) glorify them, and indeed in some cases are detailing the darker sides of addiction. So, here goes: ten songs on the subject of drugs.

    Queens of the Stone Age
TocarFeel Good Hit Of The Summer
    Rated R

...and where else to possibly start than QOTSA's legendary opening track to Rated R, a sub-three minute rush that reads like the band's shopping list. All together now: "Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol... c-c-c-c-c-cocaine..."

    Cypress Hill
    TocarI Wanna Get High
    Black Sunday

There are a few artists who have made plainly clear their love of particular substances, either in particular songs, or, in some cases, over entire careers. And here's one of them - Cypress Hill's love of marijuana was never exactly made less than obvious, and this shambling, appropriately stoned-sounded track was the opener to their biggest selling album Black Sunday. I've not listened to this album in a long, long time and upon hearing this track again...well, it's not dated all that well!

    Velvet Acid Christ
    Fun With Drugs
    Fun With Knives

Another artist with something of a "history" when it comes to drug references in his music is Bryan Erickson, aka Velvet Acid Christ, even to the point of detailing which drugs certain albums were made under the influence of. Probably the most blatant (and, indeed, one of the artist's best known tracks) references is Fun With Drugs, a deceptively upbeat-sounding track built around stacks of samples from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...

    Shamen
    Ebeneezer Goode
    Boss Drum

Talking of blatent references to drug use...this single is possibly the most blatent drug song ever to be a big hit. I don't think it was ever admitted by the band, but could this cheeky-chappie of a dance-crossover-riot ever have been about anything other than ecstasy?

    Pulp
    TocarSorted for Es and Wizz
    Different Class

And while on the subject of ecstasy...time for a bit of a come-down. Jarvis Cocker, with a typically cynical take on life, looks back on his time at raves in fields, and questions his state of mind at the time, and how life unfolded while off his box. Not everything is great, of course, perhaps one of the few songs about this kind of thing where the negative sides of drugs are alluded to in a non-preachy fashion...

    Dandy Warhols
Not if you were the last Junkie on Earth
    The Dandy Warhols Come Down

Another track that takes a rather different approach to an unnamed drug user - a vicious put-down to a heroin user, done in such a way that if you didn't listen to the lyrics, you were left with a marvellously summery-sounding pop single.

    Levellers
    Fifteen Years
    Levelling the Land

Alcoholism is a subject that I struggled to think of too many songs that cover it, but this will do as a good example for now - one of the Levellers' biggest hits from the early nineties, a surging folk-rock anthem that details the decline of a man whose home is a stool at the bar of his local...

    Gogol Bordello
    Alcohol
    Super Taranta!

On the flip side is Gogol Bordello's love-letter to a "good friend" of theirs, as they introduce it live. A slightly shambling, slurred track that appears to have been written and performed to sound as if they are drunk - maybe they were!

    Fun Lovin' Criminals
    Scooby Snacks
    Come Find Yourself

Drugs are, of course, used by many as an escape from real-life - and the Fun Lovin' Criminals took this one step further by imagining themselves in their songs as New York gangsters, and creating a fun little world that for a while many people bought into. Their most memorable song - if not their best - was Scooby Snacks, an anthemic track that sampled from Quentin Tarantino films. I did always wonder what the 'Scooby Snacks' in question were - according to the Wiki page: "the lead singer Huey explained that 'Scooby Snacks' in this case were diazepam (Valium) tablets allowing bank robbers to be so cool".

    Spiritualized

The last of the ten isn't a song, but more an entire career. Drugs have never been far away from Jason Pierce, either in his current band Spiritualized or with Spacemen 3 before that. It never became any more bloody obvious, though, than on the now-classic Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, which in it's initial run came packaged in a box that looked like tablets, the CD was in a pill case (with the foil to break to get into it), the liner notes were in the form of a leaflet that you would get with a packet of pills, oh, and the songs. But what songs. References to heroin use abound through the album, and the whole album has a hazy, blissed out quality made even more astonishing by the use of gospel choirs through much of it. Possibly the ultimate album about drugs?

Other suggestions that didn't make it into the list (feel free to add more):

Ramones | TocarI Wanna Be Sedated
    Cyanotic | TocarBeta Blocker
Marilyn Manson | TocarI Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)
    Amy Winehouse | Rehab
Arab Strap | I Would have Liked Me a Lot last night
The Dresden Dolls | TocarMy Alcoholic Friends / Me and the Minibar
    Oasis | Cigarettes and Alcohol
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds | Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow
    Nine Inch Nails | TocarHurt
