O nome da banda, Sum 41, é uma abreviação da expressão: “41 days into the Summer”, ou seja, 41 dias de verão. Mas nem mesmo os componentes sabem o porquê da escolha. Talvez porque o nome soa bem e é original.
Depois de criarem uma fita com algumas travessuras da banda (incluindo um roubo de pizzas com armas d’água), e enviá-la para várias gravadoras, em 2000 o Sum 41 assinou um contrato com a Island Records e no mesmo ano lançou o seu primeiro álbum: Half Hour of Power.
Em Maio de 2006, o integrante Dave Baksh (vulgo Dave Brownsound), saiu da banda, para trabalhar numa outra, a Brown Brigade.
