I didn't know Little Stevie Wonder did instrumentals until recently. I'd noticed a couple of tracks (no less than 4!) he composed cropping up as covers in my ever expanding library, but I'd assumed they were all vocal tracks that had been re-arranged into instrumentals. The other day I devided to investigate and see just how much the originals differ, I only managed to track down three but this one was a huge surprise. It hardly differs at all from the version on Tilt (a collaboration between guitarists Richie Kotzen (ex-Poison, ex-Mr. Big) and Greg Howe (tour guitarist for Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Enrique Iglesias and others)). [see: Richie Kotzen & Greg Howe] To be honest, Stevie's original version (lead guitar by Mike Sembello) is probably the better version. Should I bother to note it's not quite an instrumental as there are a couple of subtle and forgettable backing vocals?

While I managed to track down the original versions of two of the other three Wonder compositions lurking in my library, I'm afraid to admit I'm stumped as to the origin of Thelonius (as covered by Jeff Beck), is there even one? Perhaps Wonder wrote the song specifically for Jeff as he had originally intended Superstition to be for Jeff. Anyone curious as to what the other covers in my collection are could be pointed in the direction of Tell Me Something Good, but I'll let you guess the other one.

The good news is, this track appears to be fully streamable on last.fm, hope that's the case for your geographical area too.
