  • Recommendation #47 [The Brand New Heavies - Live In London]

    Out 31 2009, 15h31 por ofLogic

"Welcome to the Old School Brand New Heavies!" cries N'Dea Davenport, lead singer of acid jazz band The Brand New Heavies, at the start of what she terms their "welcome home" concert.

Recorded in October 2008 at the Indigo2, Live in London marks the group's first-ever live album. acid jazz fans rejoiced in 2005, when vocalist Davenport rejoined the Brand New Heavies, the British group that scored a series of hits in England beginning in 1990. Best known in the US for the 1991 single "TocarNever Stop," the Brand New Heavies became leaders in the acid jazz and retro soul movements, predating artists such as Jamiroquai, Maxwell, and Jill Scott. Davenport subsequently exited the group in the mid-90s and a series of lead vocalists (including Siedah Garrett) followed to fill the role. After pursuing a solo career, Davenport returned in 2005 to record the album Get Used to It with her former bandmates. They have performed as a core quartet ever since, and their latest album, Live in London, shows that they haven't missed a step since their '90s heyday.

The Brand New Heavies Along with backing musicians, Brand New Heavies core members Simon Bartholomew, Jan Kincaid, and Andrew Levy kick off the show with two instrumentals, setting the stage for Davenport's triumphant entry. Solid versions of "TocarNever Stop" and "All Fired Up" stick closely to the original versions, although the UK hit "TocarDream on Dreamer" segues into an uptempo cover of "TocarMidnight at the Oasis" that adds a funky twist to the 1970s single. Speaking of the '70s, the wah-wah pedal driven "TocarRide In The Sky" will make listeners want to check their calendars to ensure that this is really a 2009 album.

They also illustrate their debt to old school soul with a lovely cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Don't Know Why (I Love You)" which draws a direct parallel to their retro sound. Davenport's voice really shines here, as she uses her powerful range to full emotional effect. She also explores her vocals' sensual tone on "Sex God" which also features an irresistible bass line that really rides the song's slinky groove.

  • I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU...

    Out 21 2009, 15h32 por yxsarvik

I've been discovering the legend of Stevie Wonder today. And what a discovery it has been. I am completely in love. Stevie is the new man in my life. I didn't know I had forgotten what soul music was until he reminded me. That there was once a time when actual SOUL existed in soul music. And he was full of that soul.
His music isn't just Motown or funk or groove, it's music that crosses boundaries of style and audience. The timeless quality with which it reaches and touches the deepest parts of you is undeniable. Rich and innovative (even now) sound characterizes his early repertoire (and of course the rarely missing harmonica), yet the strength of composition and melody never wavers. Simply one gorgeous song after another. With his heartfelt lyrics and tender, but powerful delivery, he's like a storyteller in music.
And he's so positive. His songs make me feel so good. Remarkably positive for a blind man. It makes you think... that if Stevie can "see" the world in such a wonderful, hopeful light, then why can't we?
Sometimes it happens - that something you never paid much attention to or never really understood just suddenly clicks. This is the case with me and Stevie Wonder. And I'm glad because I always wanted to like him.
I'm in the process of downloading his albums, starting with the classics from the 70s. I already own The Definitive Collection, although I have suspicions about how definitive it is. These days the Best Ofs are extremely poorly compiled, consisting of only a handful of hits that the record companies keep repackaging and re-releasing to pump the cash. So you have to do the research yourself to get a clear overview of an artist's body of work.

At the moment the list of my favourite songs of his includes the following pearls:
    Isn´t She Lovely
    TocarMy Cherie Amour
    TocarSir Duke
    TocarOverjoyed
    Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours
    Place In The Sun
    TocarSend One Your Love
    TocarLiving For The City
TocarI Just Called To Say I Love You
    TocarPart-Time Lover
    TocarSuperstition
    Ebony and Ivory
    TocarFor Your Love
    TocarLately
    TocarAll In Love Is Fair
    TocarVisions
    TocarAs
TocarI Was Made To Love Her

But it can change - there are too many great ones to choose from.

‘I’m just a kid and you’re a walking candy store.’ (I Want Some More)
‘When the night comes, don’t be afraid you’re only dreaming’ (When The Night Comes)

    4. How did you get into no.49?
    The Love of Everything
I first saw Bobby Burg when he played bass with Chin Up Chin Up at a gig here in Amsterdam. Went on the web to discover he had a few tunes I liked.

    5. How many albums by no.13 do you own?
    The Black Keys
Two. Rubber Factory and Attack & Release.

    Sum 41
    Eh...In Too Deep or TocarPieces

    7. Is there a song by no.39 that makes you sad?

    NOFX
    Reeko or TocarEat the Meek

    9. What is your favorite song by no.5?
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
Pfff, difficult one there. I just can’t say, because they have so many awesome songs. Perhaps I’ll say Otherside. Not because it’s their best song musically(although still very nice), but just because it brings back very happy memories.

    10. Is there a song by no.6 that makes you happy?
    Operation Ivy
Hmm, well most Operation Ivy songs are rather angry and aggressive. But the funny thing is they can cheer me up very well when I’m very angry or sad myself. Partly seen in this perspective I’ll go for Bad Town as their most ‘happy’ song.

    11. What is the worst song by no.40?
    Broken Social Scene
Don’t know that much about them, there’s only a couple songs I like about them. Don’t really know whether they have a song which really sucks.

    12. What is your favorite song by no.10?
    Green Day
Ehm, also not easy. I’ll go for Longview, I think, because of the awesome bassline. But there’s a lot more pretty good Green Day songs.

    Don't have one really.

    16. Is there a song by no.25 that makes you sad?

    Box Car Racer
    TocarThere Is

    18. What's your favorite lyric by no.11?

Again hard. I hate these favorite questions, lol. Joe Strummer is one of my favourite singers. In the end I’ll go for this one from TocarKoka Kola: ‘Your snakeskin suit and your alligator boot. You won't need a launderette, you can send them to the vet!

    blink-182
I love Mark, Tom and Travis(and Scott for that matter) equally the same. His amazing drumming on Blink’s self-titled record made me fall in love with punk rock and maybe even music all together.

Before their latest album Humbug, Arctic Monkeys almost exclusively made happy songs. I’ll pick From the Ritz to the Rubble.

    31. How many times have you seen no.17 live?
    Run-D.M.C
Zero times. Not as surprising seeing as Jam Master Jay died about 6 years before I even heard a Run-D.M.C. song.

    Chester French
TocarTime to Unwind is a cute little song.

    N.W.A.
    Express Yourself

    46. Is there a song by no.9 that makes you happy?
    Bob Marley
I think you can better ask is there a song by Bob Marley that doesn’t make you happy. Let’s see, what about No Woman, No Cry? ‘Everything’s gonna be alright!’ Or perhaps even TocarStir It Up?

    47. What is your favorite album by no.4?
