Sa., 10. Okt. – Staubkind - Special Fankonzert

Das Konzert war einfach der Hammer, ich kenne diese Musik nur durch meine Freundin. Aber der Louis ist so ein sympathischer Typ natürlich auch der Rest der Band ;) Es war einfach nur schön, es gab einige Gäste wie Serena, Nick und die Frau mit dieser so geilen Stimme ich glaub Ulrike Goldmann, schlagt mich wenn ich mich irre ;) Es war gut vorbereitet, pannen gibt es immer aber das hat die band gut umgesetzt und es war eher erheiternd. Die Fans haben auch zweimal ein Happy Birthday Staubkind angestimmt, daran kann man dann auch erkennen das es gut war und Staubkind eine Fancrowd hat und ab dem gestrigen Tage habt ihr einen FAN mehr, mich dem Cultur :) Fotos und ein kl. As an introduction to this year's Blackfield Festival exothermal, his girlfriend and I were visiting the Blackfield Warm-Up at Zeche Carl in Essen. This was mainly because of Seabound being on stage there - we hadn't seen them live yet.

The evening started with Soman - a rather technoid sounding one-man-show. Alas, it wasn't much of a show: Just one guy with a MacBook pressing keys and pushing buttons on stage. The music was actually quite dancable but nothing out of the ordinary and certainly nothing that would make a great live show.

Continuing with Absurd Minds the evening got better. Their performance was quite pleasing although they had a bit of a hard time to get the audience dancing and clapping their hands. It was quite evident that everyone was waiting for Seabound. But anyhow, they delivered a solid show - the addition of ex-Haujobb Daniel Myer for the last few tracks was a nice surprise as well.

As a first for Seabound they were headlining the evening. And this they did! The atmosphere in the club was really energetic and Frank and Martin as well as their drummer delivered an absolutely fantastic show. And they seemed to be really glad about the audience being so enthusiastic. Obviously this is not always the case when Seabound are on stage here in Germany, at least according to Frank. If that really is true it certainly is a pity because they were absolutely fabulous. So let's hope that this evening was the first of a lot more Seabound-shows to come where a German audience is actually enjoying themselves.

Although we might have to wait a bit for that. As Frank said, they first need to make more new music. I do absolutely agree and am looking forward to new great music by them.

Saturday - and thus Day One of Blackfield Festival 2009 - started with heavy clouds hanging over the festival site at the Amphitheater in Gelsenkirchen. Just as I left the motorway it started pouring down. Luckily it was just a short shower so when I left my car at the parking lot the sun was already shining again. But it shouldn't be the last time it rained - so I was lucky that I took my umbrella with me.

After "only" one hour standing in line to get my admission wristband I was finally in. To the sounds of Staubkind I started to roam the various merchant booths waiting for exothermal, his girlfriend and another friend of them to arrive. What I heard from Staubkind sounded quite interesting. I have put them on my need-to-check-out-list.

What also went onto that list is Destroid - the latest project by Daniel Myer. I can't help myself to wonder how he manages this many projects in parallel. Granted, Haujobb has kind of ceased to exist but then again he has joined Covenant after Klaas left.

In the mean time I had a short chat with some members of the official ASP fan club "Die Schwärmer". Looks like they can always need new members. ;) Finally my friends had also arrived so we started exploring the festival site to the sounds of End Of Green who were on stage by then. Originally I had planned to get my copy of VNV Nation's most recent album Of Faith, Power and Glory signed. But that plan was cancelled when I saw the queue in front of the tent where the autograph sessions were being held.

We wouldn't have managed to get down in front of the stage in time for Rotersand. Which would have been a pity because as always they delivered a fantastic show. For them it was a "home match" so to say, as they hail from Gelsenkirchen. That fact caused Rasc to yell "Mama, we're home!" at the start. And of course he couldn't just stay on stage like any other singer, no, he had to personally make sure everyone was dancing. :D They also presented a brand-new track called "First Time" - a lot more will come in October with their new album. At least that's the date Rasc told me when I had my Welcome to Goodbye-CD signed.

Project Pitchfork's show I watched sitting on the stairs together with a girl I met whilst standing in line for the Rotersand autograph session. Compared to last year's Amphi Festival the sound of PP was much better and their performance itself was just as energetic.

For Diary of Dreams I was back with exothermal and the girls, again sitting on the stairs. At first we were wondering if the running order had been changed when VNV's Ronan Harris entered the stage. But he was only there to do Adrian and the band a favour to announce them. In contrast to the last Diary of Dreams shows I saw this one was much more powerful. Which is not to say that it was bad, on the contrary. But I do missed a few quieter tracks, maybe even The Colors of Grey from their current album. But then again as it was an open air stage it maybe was not really dark enough outside that this would've worked. A great show nonetheless.

But now nothing could hold exothermal and me on the stairs anymore. So we dived right into the crowd in front of the stage. To say it was pretty packed would be an understatement. The guy from Chicago we chatted with whilst waiting for the headlining band of this first day would certainly agree. ;) And then it was time for Diary's Adrian Hates to return the favor and announce VNV Nation.

To the sounds of Pro Victoria (the intro for their brand-new album) the audience waited excitedly for the band to enter the stage. And then the ride started powerfully with Honour. As I had expected from the live recordings VNV had no problem at all to get the audience going. And to be honest: Who could have stood still to such great music? A further highlight was, well, Further of course - always a favourite and I had really hoped that they would play that track. Another very special moment was when the audience sang the chorus to Illusion. They also added two more tracks from the new album, Sentinel and Tomorrow Never Comes which really make me look forward to listening that CD in-depth and of course to the tour in September.

As the last track they played Beloved to which the audience again was singing parts of the chorus. But we would not let them go without at least one encore: Perpetual. Too sad that there wasn't time for more but then again all good things must come to an end. And it was a fantastic experience to say the least. Although VNV were the last band on stage for saturday the day was not done yet. The silver screen that had been used for VNV Nation's gig came to another use afterwards: Assorted tracks from the coming up Live DVD by ASP featuring a concert of their acoustic tour last fall were shown. All in all this was another 25 minutes of music and a great appetizer for the DVD which will be out by August.

On Sunday the sky looked much more friendly. After the show by Dope Stars Inc. for which I joined a good part of the ASP fan club I went shopping a bit. And I'm glad that I did because otherwise I still wouldn't know that Dependent Records will start to release new music this fall. (They had stopped releasing new stuff in late 2007 due to huge frustration about music being "pirated".) I had a nice chat with the label founder Stefan Herwig. After having bought Genesis.2 by VNV Nation I mentioned that I was looking forward to hear the Ivory Frequency Mix. He took that as an opportunity to hand me IF's single Today - but not without suggesting me to buy the album if I liked it. And boy, that track is fabulous! So the people working for (or owning) small independent labels really are passionate about music - as am I. (Otherwise I wouldn't still be using last.fm.)

After having brought my new possessions back to my car I was joined by exothermal and the girls again. The weather was still warm and sunny but that shouldn't last much longer. During the show by Faun - who where the only medieval folk band for this festival and thus a welcome change (and also went on my need-to-check-out-list ^^) - exothermal and I had to keep our umbrellas open to either protect the girls and ourselves from rain or the sun. ;)

This continued while we watched Frozen Plasma of whom I was positively surprised. So far I only knew one track by them and thus I was quite curious about them. The energetic performance by Felix Marc already got the crowd going this early in the afternoon. And I am inclined to get their current album because I liked what I heard and saw. Following that were Letzte Instanz, so it was time for us to dive into the crowd. As expected Holly and the guys really made the audience party. And course they had everyone waving their hands in the air during the whole length of Wir sind allein. Though I have to admit that I didn't manage it because my arms hurt too much. ^^'

Although I would've liked to see IAMX we went to get some food because by that time we were quite hungry. In hindsight I regret that we were so hungry because I've had a closer listen to IAMX's latest album and I liked it. Well, there will certainly be another chance to see Chris Corner's solo project live. During Suicide Commando's show we were still not back to the stage because by then the girls were stuck at a tent where loads of clothing was being sold... However, Suicide Commando where loud enough to hear them all over the place. And the few bits we saw of their performance where not really that remarkable.

After that Mesh entered the stage. And whilst they where - as expected - musically great their singer made a somewhat bored impression on me. However, it was great to hear that there will be a new album by them this fall (which will be released on dependent in Europe). And I was glad that they played Friends Like These, my favourite track by them.

Two bands left to go until this great festival was to end. The breaks for re-arranging the stage also started to become longer and longer - at least it felt that way. So, next up where Apoptygma Berzerk. I was not really sure whether to look forward to them or not because I feel that ever since You and Me Against the World and even more so since Rocket Science they sound like a bad copy of Placebo. And for sure: Even their older tracks - although I was glad that they played at least some songs for me to sing along - where "spiced up" with guitars. Ah well, I should be glad that they played Until the End of the World even if it didn't sound like I expected it. ;)

For the final act of the evening and the festival we managed to get up into the 3rd to 4th row in front of the stage. And of course: ASP absolutely rocked! And not only that, again it was amazing when the whole audience sang along to Und wir tanzten. The four guys from Frankfurt also had a very special track to play. As a world premiere they performed the brand-new Wer Sonst? from the album they are currently working on. And although the audience was keeping quiet to hear as much of the new song as they could the mood kept on being fantastic as was the applause for this world premiere.

But all too soon the show was over... not! ASP had to return twice for an encore. And with the second one they really gave the festival a fantastic finale: To the chorus of Ich will brennen (translates as "I want to burn") waves of flames emerged from the stage. And for their final song Biotopia they started huge fireworks right next to the stage - which we couldn't really see as we were standing so close to the stage.

If next year's line up features as much great bands as this time I will definitely pay Blackfield Festival another visit!

Sa., 20. Jun. – Blackfield Festival 2009
Im letzten Jahr feierte das Blackfield Festival seine Feuertaufe und konnte schon dort mit einem interessanten Lineup, guter Organisation, klasse Sound und einer tollen Location punkten. Das Amphitheater in Gelsenkirchen ist wirklich schön und bietet allen Besuchern perfekte Sicht auf die direkt am Rhein-Herne-Kanal befindliche Bühne. Nachdem der Start 2008 so positiv gemeistert wurde, hatten sich die Veranstalter für 2009 eine Menge vorgenommen und ihre Hausaufgaben wirklich gemacht. Zahlreiche Feedbackbögen wurden ausgewertet und soweit möglich wurde auf alle Verbesserungsvorschläge und Bandwünsche eingegangen, so dass am Ende ein beeindruckendes Lineup unter noch besseren Rahmenbedingungen entstand.
