Stats, part 5: jazz

    Ago 20 2009, 16h15 por -273C

Just another one statistical post. Jazz is our field of research today (top-100 of the tag jazz, to be exact).

    предыдущие посты / previous entries
    mainstream
    russian rock
    progressive rock
    black metal

First of all, our traditional arrangement with respect to number of plays and number of listeners.

    Pic. 1 - full size

    Pic. 2 - full size

In both cases the most popular artist is Amy Winehouse (and, yes, I supposed it would be correct to exclude Tom Waits from jazz stats). Then the things go more classical: Norah Jones, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and so on.

    Pic. 3

And that's the way, general dependence of playcount to number of listeners looks like. You can notice, it's bending upwards with growing number of listeners. So, that means, the leaders of our statistics are treated by listeners in a different way, than other artists.

    Pic. 4 - full size

The graph of specific number of scrobbles (a playcount divided by number of listeners for each artist) confirms that notation. Surprisingly, jazz artists have very low specific scrobble number - 11 in average. Amy Winehouse has the highest one - 32.

    Pic. 5

The histogram just supports concentrating of specific number of scrobbles near very low values, repeating the histogram for other genres in general. Sad, but true. Is jazz dead?

    Pic. 6

Some stats about the user activity in shoutboxes. As one can see, there's no strict dependence of number of shouts to number of listeners. It's obvious, that more popular artists should get more shouts. By the way, Amy Winehouse isn't included here - see the next plot to understand why.

    Pic.7

And here's the dependence of number of shouts in the shoutbox to specific number of scrobbles. Amy Winehouse takes the lead again, having six times more shouts than others. So, she's really anomalous for the jazz. And without Amy, the graph exhibits the property, found in previous research: average specific number of scrobbles behaves like a barrier, separating artists with few shouts from artists with lots of them. Let us see, what another genres would show us the next time)

The total playcount in jazz's top-100 is 348 millions.

  • Bored at midnight - 40 questions

    Jul 23 2009, 23h27 por Sevortrin

    40 Questions

It’s midnight, and I’m bored, slightly drunk – time to do a 40 questions about your top 50 survey.

    1. How did you get into 31? -Scissor Sisters
Dr. Who's episode 'Last of the Time Lords', where The Master is singing along to TocarI Can't Decide. Immediately loved the song *blush*

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? - Sam Sparro
    TocarBlack & Gold

    3. What's your favourite lyric by 41? - Pink Floyd
"And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon"
    Brain Damage
I will always have soft spot in my heart for anything related to Syd Barret

    4. What is your favourite album by 49? - Steel Drivers
They only made one album so far, Steel Drivers, but it is amazing.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? - Old Crow Medicine Show
    Two

    6. What is your favourite song by 50? - blink-182
    Easy one: TocarAdam's Song

    7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad? - Less Than Jake
Nope, one of the few bands in my top 50 that cheers me up with all their songs.

    8. What is your least favourite song by 15? - The Real Danger
None, any song of their debut album is just fucking great.

    9. What is your favourite song by 5? - Unwritten Law
TocarShallow, both the normal and the acoustic version. Best punk song ever.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? - Squirrel Nut Zippers
Most of their songs do, but Ghost of Stephen Foster ought to be my favourite.

    11. What is your favourite album by 40? - Balham Alligators
Only know one album, Cajun Dance Party, but the only really good song on it is Hobo Blues, the rest is not really my taste, actually.

    12. What is your favourite song by 10? - Acda en De Munnik
Oh, hard one... currently Zwerver met een wekker, but I have many more that I adore by this artist. It's all in the lyrics that makes me love them.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 33? - Social Distortion
Uhm, being a lil punk rock stoner when I was younger? :)

    14. What is your favourite song by 37? - The Ataris
    Summer of '79

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? - My Chemical Romance
Lol, not really. This is my typical 'I feel emo' band.

    16. How many times have you seen 24 live? - Beef
3 or 4 times. Yeah, 4 times I believe. Can't get enough of them!

    17. What is the first song you heard by 23? - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
TocarThe Boogie Bumper or TocarMr. Pinstripe Suit, not sure anymore.

    18. What is your favourite album by 11? - The Smiths
To be honest, I only know their The Best of album, but it's fab, so that must be my fav anyway.

    19. Who is your favourite member of 1? - The Beatles
Well, the Beatles would not have been the Beatles as we know them if any of the members had been someone else, but apart from that, John Lennon has always had a special place in my heart - I prefer 'his' Beatles songs over the other members and his character can only be admired. I've been drawn enough to him to have a special John Lennon tattoo.

    20. How many times have you seen 14 live? - Boudewijn de Groot
    None :(

    21. Do you have any good memories involving 45? - Bob Dylan
Besides enjoying myself tremendeously listening to his poetical music? None.

    22. What is your favourite song by 16? - Green Day
Either Good Riddance or the live version of American Idiot. Or maybe even Jesus of Suburbia. Damnit, now I feel like listening Green Day.

    23. What is the first song you heard by 47? - Flogging Molly
TocarDrunken Lullabies. Don't recall where and when and why though...

    24. What is your favourite album by 3? - Loudon Wainwright III
BBC Sessions, because it contains most of his best songs, including my favourite Hard Day on the Planet

    25. What is your favourite song by 18? - The Dubliners
Oh, so many! My top three in random order:
    Home Boys Home
    TocarFarewell To Carlingford
    TocarFiddler's Green
But seriously, there are many more that I adore.

    26. What is the first song you heard by 38? - Disturbed
Down With the Sickness. Still my fav song by them.

    27. What is your favourite lyric that 21 has sung? - DevilDriver
I gotta be honest, I don't always understand their lyrics (grunts and all), but the line "Some things are best just left unsaid" from End of the Line always appealed to me.

    28. What is your favourite song by 2? - The Statler Brothers
Questions keep getting harder... According to my library it's TocarI'll Go to My Grave Loving You, but honestly, I couldn't choose. I have slight preference for TocarSilver Medals And Sweet Memories, but I wouldn't want to call it my favourite.

    29. What is the first song you heard by 32? - Rowwen Hèze
I wouldn't be able to tell you. I heard this band while growing up - my parents love this band, I have taken a liking to them myself.

    30. What is your favourite song by 8? - Kevin Bloody Wilson
    TocarD.I.L.L.I.G.A.F.!

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? - Elvis Presley
    None, alas.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Happy is not the word, but TocarWhere the Wild Roses Grow draws a smile onto my face.

    33. What is your favourite album by 12? - Johannes Brahms
Album doesn't seem to be the appropriate word, but I love Hungarian Dances Nos. 1-21.

    34. What is the worst song by 29? - Queen
    TocarPrinces of the Universe. Ugh...

    35. What was the first song you heard by 34? - Goldfrapp
    Oh La La

    36. What is your favourite album by 42? - Avenged Sevenfold
None really, I just like some of their random songs, to be honest.

    37. How many times have you seen 36 live? - Orphanage
Once, somewhere in 2000 or 2001 - my first metal concert ever.

    38. What is your favourite album by 39? - The Used
    The Used

    39. What is the first song you heard by 28? - Enge Buren
Whatever song they start their 16 May 2008 concert with - don't recall which song it was. Do recall I really enjoyed myself during the gig.

    40. What is your favourite song by 35? - Wintersun
    Beyond the Dark Sun <333

okay, It's 1:15 now, I'm slightly more drunk and for the past 75 minutes I was slightly less bored. One question remains, what to do next?

  • Listening Through All Of My Albums: #312 - Hot (Squirrel Nut Zippers)

    Abr 29 2009, 13h37 por andyfest

    Hot by Squirrel Nut Zippers

    6.5 (out of 10)

I always sort of lumped Squirrel Nut Zippers in with the ska bands of the mid-to-late 90's but they aren't even close to ska, they're big band all the way. They just had the unfortunate fate of being around at the same time when "horns" meant "ska". Every time I hear Hot, I'm surprised at how much I still like it. Really, if you're looking for a jazzy album for a party or relaxing Sunday afternoon, you can do a lot worse. I guess that's why I never sold this CD.

Squirrel Nut Zippers (named after a candy) formed in 1993 and is based in North Carolina. Although they play a mixture of styles and draw on many different influences, they are regarded as one of the bigger bands in the Swing Revival movement for their various takes on big-band-ish 1920s and 1930s sounding swing jazz. Their first album, The Inevitable, was released in 1995. After their debut, they released an album a year until in 1998 when they released their fourth album, Perennial Favorites.

The Swing Revival scene is riddled with bands of varying quality. Many seem to mix their nostalgia with modern influences and often a slightly parodic feeling. Squirrel Nut Zippers were never happy about being associated with that lot (they were certainly more than just swing) and come across as a bit more genuine and more varied than most of their hipster revival contemporaries such as Brian Setzer Orchestra and Cherry Poppin' Daddies. While it certainly sounds like they have a lot of fun with their works, you get the impression the music they make not only adheres to styles they like, but also their way of life.

I discovered Squirrel Nut Zippers just after the release of Perennial Favorites and I was very much looking forward to their sixth (and final) album Bedlam Ballroom. Still, after having made myself familiar with most of their work, in my opinion - their fourth album, Perennial Favorites, still stands a head and possibly a shoulder above the rest.

    Song for Song Review :

While most of the songs on the album could be said to have a touch of swing jazz, the different songs draw from a range of influences and every song sounds different from the others. The album opens with the classic Suits are picking up the bill. Jim Mathus sings a somewhat cryptic but upbeat commentary on capitalism. The song is fun and catchy - definetly a good start! The next song slows things down a bit with a wonderful little intro on the piano before it opens up to you. Low Down Man is a beautiful, melancholic, country-bluesy ballad carried well by Katharine Whalen's wonderful vocals and a haunting steel pedal guitar. This is my girlfriend's all-time favourite SNZ track. The third track, Ghost of Stephen Foster opens up with Andrew Bird playing an eerie, suspense building intro on his violin before things suddenly spiral into a crazy, slightly eastern european sounding polkaish jazz with shouting chorus and a lot of hoompf!. The lyrics are cryptic but seem to deal with a meeting with the ghost of Stephen Foster and the things the ghost says. If we were made of cellophane, we'd all get stinking drunk much faster, hahaha!. Enjoy the video if you want.

    Watch the video on youtube.

Pallin' With Al is another upbeat song with a lot of violin and is certainly another potential album favourite. Fat Cat Keeps Getting Faster, a fast jazz-duet between Jimbo and his wife Katharine and Trou Macacq are are not among my favourite tracks on the album, but they're still good songs. My Drag is another intriguing, melancholic lament by Katharine Whalen which might just be about recurring depression. Soon brings back the hoompf! and sounds like a somewhat paranoid song about portents and bad omens. It includes quite a bit of shouting and some rather memorable lyrics (.. But if you draw a bow, draw the strongest! - Yeeahh!! - And if you use an arrow, use the longest! - OH YEAH!). Great stuff!

Evening at Lafittes is, for me, the album's brightest gem. It is my all-time faovurite SNZ song. I'm a bit scared of writing about it because I'm not sure how to describe this song to people who have not heard it before. It's a relatively uncomplicated song about a place called Lafittes, a great place for dancing and romancing. Katharine Whalen does wonderful, jazzy vocals and you can dance to it, especially if you have a partner. I don't think I want to say much more about it except - if you're only gonna listen to one song from this album, give this one a shot.

The Kraken is an intriguing, unpredictable song and differs quite a lot from the rest of the album with it's quirky weirdness. It's humpty-dumpty almost comical first half eventually gives way to the most haunting vocals on the album, a love song sung by the Kraken (aka Katharine). Being a norwegian, the Kraken is one of my favourite monsters, and I find the romantic take on the old squid to be quite intriguing - and a little captivating. Good song and a great curiosity!

That Fascinating Thing is a vulgar-bluesy-sounding jazz song and - one of the weaker tracks on the album, if not the weakest. It has it's moments, but it pales compared to the quality of the rest. It's Over is just that, a short song announcing the album's end.

    Review Summary :

Perennial Favorites, although it has a couple of weak tracks, is an awesome and varied album. It has big band, polka, country, blues, eastern european, harlem, etc etc influences and I find it makes it quite hard to accurately describe this album to someone who has not yet listened to it. Lumping it in as another album from the hipster Swing Revival crowd does not do it justice. If you've read through the review up to here, I hope I've at least managed to make you curious enough to get your hands on this album. I think it's the finest they ever made and worthy a spot in anyone's collection.

    Toretorden's Treasure Trove score : 5/6

Favourite tracks : Suits Are Picking up the Bill, Low Down Man, Ghost of Stephen Foster, Pallin' With Al, My Drag, Evening at Lafittes

    2) Frank Zappa (329) - Principalmente as músicas instrumentais.

    6) Squirrel Nut Zippers (141)

    7) Fall Out Boy (140) - a banda tem músicas boas, esqueça o visual do baixista e aproveite.

    8) Mallu Magalhães (119) – a moda passou rápido, não lembro a última vez que ouvi ela.

    9) Wilco (117)

    14) Jellyfish (82)

    15) The Beach Boys (80)

    16) Ozma (68)

    17) Los Hermanos (63)

  • Enough With the Holiday Tunes, Already!

    Dez 28 2008, 14h29 por tadmaster

I can only take so much. You're probably the same way. For several days AFTER Christmas, you can still be assaulted with the holiday-themed music & muzak everywhere you go. Well, as far as I'm concerned, it's after Christmas, so Santa Claus can get the #%*&@! back out of town!

For those who would like some ammunition for firing back, I give you this list. There are three four basic types of songs on here:
    1. Irreverent parodies
    2. "Alternate" holidays
    3. Neglected covers that should be played instead of the overplayed versions
    4. Covers so cheesy that the listener might suffer a physical blockage

I leave it to you to decide which tunes belong in which categories. So, sit back, toss back the "hair of the nog", and spread the word to the muzak programmers: it's time to pack the holiday box up for another year. (And don't be so eager to break it out again next October.)
