Music blogs and the Hype Machine have become indispensable tools for discovering new music. But their rise has also created a culture where every week a new artist is dubbed 'the next big thing', only to be exploited for blog hits and then forgotten as soon as another exciting act appears on the scene. This is especially true in the world of electronic and dance music, where the blogs have been taken over recently by a wave of second-rate electro and remixes disparagingly referred to as 'blog house' (Sheffield's Article Magazine has similar thoughts this month).

Duck&Cover will attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff and feature electronic music that will stand the test of time. So to kick things off, a couple of quick mixes of mostly oldish tracks to give you an idea of the kind of artists that will appear on the podcast. If you want the mixes to magically appear in your iTunes every month then subscribe here. Alternatively, you can just grab the Mediafire links which will probably be much quicker and more reliable - just remember to bookmark the blog and check back every month!

I know, I know, two mixes both beginning with Simian Mobile Disco [pictured] tracks, but after seeing them open their set at The Plug last week with 'Sleep Deprivation' it just had to go in. The fact that Attack Decay Sustain Release is a truly great and unique album didn't help either. It's just a shame that the same can't be said, for the most part anyway, of their new release Temporary Pleasure. 'Pull Up The People' is a classic track from M.I.A.'s first album Arular whilst Tepr brings some extra bassweight to 'Say Aha' by Santigold, who is too often likened to M.I.A. on fairly shallow grounds. German producers Modeselektor provide some intricate electronica in the form of 'Godspeed' and bassy techno on 'Kill Bill Vol. 4'.

This version of Soulwax's 'E Talking' is taken from their excellent Nite Versions remix album - expect to hear more remixes of decent indie/guitar tunes on future podcasts. Surkins 'Radio Fireworks' is a great example of electro done right and it's hard to believe that it's already three years old. Finally, 'Rollin and Scratchin' is a perfect example of a track that stands the test of time. Twelve years on and Homework is still incredible - who cares if you've heard it a hundred times before?

Ils sont annoncés à grande pompe comme étant la tête de file de la « new rave », ce nouveau courant musical que les docteurs ès marketing ont sobrement baptisé « rock fluo ».

Après déjà quatre singles intriguants (« Gravity’s Rainbow », « Atlantis to Interzone », Magick » et « Golden Skans »), le premier véritable album des Klaxons voit le jour, « Myths Of The Near Future » sonne comme du … bah justement comme pas grand-chose de connu.

A l’écoute, on n’est pas complètement perdus pour autant : des sons limite techno/dance (les sirènes sur l’excellent « Atlantis to interzone »), des lignes de basses sèches et précises (« Totem on the timeline »), des guitares déglinguées (« Gravity’s rainbow »), des morceaux pop/électro à la manière de Soulwax (« As above so below »). Vient s’ajouter à cela un chant venu d’ailleurs (« Isle of her »), qui de prime abord rend l’ensemble un peu bordélique. Mais au fur et à mesure, les pièces du puzzle s’assemblent pour former un tableau surréaliste convaincant.

Au final, on retiendra de cet album sombre et emprunt d’urgence ses mélodies improbables qui réussissent l’exploit d’être entêtantes sans céder à la facilité. L’album excitera les curieux pendant un temps, les autres seront vite effrayés et/ou fatigués par l’aspect tortueux et « fin de monde » de l’opus.

Coup de gueule enfin : il faudra lire 38 et non 53 minutes sur l’écran de la chaîne Hi-Fi pour être dans les clous sur la durée véritable de la galette, la dernière piste abritant honteusement 15 minutes de plage vierge.

La question mérite de se poser, car ce petit pays a vu émerger de nombreux groupes talentueux sur la scène pop rock, à commencer par Soulwax (le pendant rock de 2 Many DJ’s), Venus, ou bien encore dEUS. Tant qu’on y est, on pourra citer K’s Choice, ou même Ghinzu, qui nous a livré le single efficace « Do you read me ? » (que l’on reconnaîtra au détour d’une pub SNCF mettant en scène une créature rose et molle…)

Mais Girls in Hawaii s’est taillée une place bien à part, avec ses mélodies douce amère et ses voix chaleureuses. Les termes culinaires sont tout à fait appropriés dans la mesure où ce groupe belge fait preuve d’une belle constance tout au long de ce premier album intitué « From here to here » et y applique une recette terriblement efficace : des harmonies de voix chaudes rarement entendues (« Casper »), des guitares claires qui sonnent parfaitement sur des mélodies pop sucrées (« Short song for a short mind »), alternance de deux notes pour renforcer la puissance des chansons (« The fog »).

On ne tombe pas systématiquement sous le charme (« 9.00 am », « Catwalk », « Found in the ground » sont juste sympas, l’aspect boîte à rythme), mais la fin de l’album regorge de pépites (« Fontanelle » avec ses couplets joyeux et ses refrains mélancoliques, « Flavor » qui monte en puissance et éclate tel un morceau de PJ Harvey, « Organeum » avec son introduction piano sec / voix frêle et qui témoigne d’une véritable sensibilité à fleur de peau, et enfin le chef d’œuvre de douce amertume qu’est « Bees & Butterflies », chanson qui s’envole très haut après une introduction en arpège magique et qui symbolise à elle seule l’atmosphère agréablement mélancolique que les orfèvres de Girls In Hawaii ont conféré à leur premier album).

En synthèse, un album à écouter et réécouter pour saisir tout le talent de ces belges qui nous font penser à de véritables artisans, qui travaillent leurs chansons comme autant de joyaux cachant leur richesse sous une mince couche de déjà-entendu.
