Soul Coughing was a New York-based alternative rock band. The band found modest mainstream success during the mid-to-late 90’s. Soul Coughing developed a devout fanbase and have garnered largely positive response from critics. Steve Huey describes the band as “one of the most unique cult bands of the ’90s … driven by frontman M. Doughty’s stream-of-consciousness poetry, Soul Coughing’s sound was a willfully idiosyncratic mix of improvisational jazz grooves, oddball samples, hip-hop, electronics, and noisy experimentalism (described by Doughty as ‘deep slacker jazz’).

"Soft Serve" - my most scrobbled track :) for good reason.Soul Coughing is such a good band, its too bad they had to split up. Also one of the most unique bands I've ever come across - there is really nothing else to compare them to. The upright bass pleases me exponentially :)

I'd have to say that El Oso is definitely their best work, and is even better than Mike Doughty's solo stuff. But Mike Doughty's solo career is also way better than everything else Soul Coughing produced. Needless to say, El Oso is where it's at!

One of the best bands ever, obviously. It's a shame they had to squabble about money and who wrote what. Especially as El Oso was a bit of a let down compared to the debut and sophomore albums. Would have been nice to see them go onwards and upwards. Oh well.

Glad to see Mike Doughty is still thriving. Ruby Vroom-one of the best albums of the '90's; remember playing "ghosts and gouls " for Sega genesis(not a gamer!), played the album and game simo, synced up nicely, like wizard of oz and dark side!!!
