• Review: Sophie Milman - Make Someone Happy

    Jun 17 2007, 20h38 por dboynton

Smooth Jazz? You bet. "Lite FM?" Gotcha covered.

That's where this one is headed. My pick is Stevie Wonder's "Rocket Love," but there are at least a half-dozen tracks on this disc that would be suitable for the playlist. This second release out of the chute for Sophie Milman is even better than the first - and the first was a surprisingly tough act to follow.

This one has a little more polish - it's more lush than the last one. But that's to be expected, too. The first disc sort of came out of nowhere, a bare-bones outing that ended up topping Canadian Jazz charts, and breaking very nicely into the US market, as well.

Randy Bachman (Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive) joins the group for a cover of his late sixties top-40 hit, "Undun." Other favorites of mine from the disc include "People Will Say We're In Love," along with the title track, "Make Someone Happy," and an original from Producer Steven MacKinnon and Singer/Songwriter Marc Jordan - "Something in the Air Between Us."

These standards are anything but standard - Montreal musician (sax and flute) Cameron Wallis has done a fine job with most of the arrangements, and Ms. Milman's ability to swing 'em with confidence is a mark of maturity one expects from someone beyond her 24-or-so years. Clunkers? Yes, you can't take the kinds of chances Ms. Milman does and not have a misstep or two. "It's Not Easy Being Green" is perhaps better left to amphibians.

But I'm being picky. It's a small blemish on a disc that so clearly continues the trajectory that lifted off more than two years ago with Ms. Milman's first recording. Two years ago, I wrote, "The best way to market this young woman is to point people to her website, and hand them a freebie."

I can point you to a pair from the first album - and I'll add that this disc - in its strongest moments - is even better. A single track - "So Long, You Fool" from this disc is available as a free download from Ms. Milman's website.

I'm pleased to report that Ms. Milman's career appears to be coming along nicely. She was a business student at the University of Toronto when all of this began. The education should come in very handy.

This one needs more airplay south of the border. Go listen. Then call your local Jazz (smooth or otherwise) or Adult Contemporary radio station, and tell them about it.

    Very highly recommended.

  • How Varied is Your Taste in Music?

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • All that jazz!: confessions of a jazz virgin

    Abr 29 2006, 15h57 por dannececoholic

I am just a recent convert to jazz. I love the feeling on each of the 10% neurons being stimulated hence making my brain a more efficient tool.

Herbie Hancock was my first self-discovery of this genre. I then tried contemporary soul jazz that of Sophie Milman, and Maria Harp.

I'm currently listening (and loving classic jazz) to John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Astrud Gilberto, and Wes Montgomery.

Could any jazz expert comment on this musical selections as the best way for me to start on my jazz realm?

I would appreciate comments and suggestions =>

    Thankee!
  • REVIEW: Sophie Milman

Sophie Milman - Sophie Milman (Linus Canada)
    Released: November 2004 (US release - 21 March 2006)

I have come late to this party.

Gracious. I'm a sucker for anything with a Brazilian beat, so the first cut on this disc - "Agua De Beber," had me right off. According to her bio, Sophie Milman is a 22-year-old Canadian, who lives in Toronto by way of Israel, where she developed a "...deep appreciation for artists such as Ella Fitzgerald..."

Now. It takes a little audacity to evoke Ella's name right off in one's biography. It's not arrogance, though - if you can pull it off.

And Ms. Milman will, I think. What remains to be seen is if she'll be noticed.

First the album. Good stuff. Very good stuff. Nice mix of standards and newer stuff. This young woman displays confidence beyond her years. Backing her is a small group - notably Guido Basso, playing harmonica on "Man I Love." It's possible that he steals the show on that one. The treatment of "I Feel Pretty" would not have cooked the way it did - without Pat La Barbera (formerly with Buddy Rich) on Alto Sax.

The best way to market this young woman is to point people to her website, and hand them a freebie.

"First one's free," as the dealers say. I'm hooked.

You can hear most of the album now - if you're a "MusicMatch" subscriber. That's how I listened. It's already available through Amazon/US and Amazon/Canada. You'll want the higher-quality CD. With the liner notes.

    Oh, yes. And the photos.

I know I want more. You will, too.
