Given the amount of bitching I've done about how late shows get started in Toronto, you'd think that (finally) moving into the city would mean that I'd be out every single night. Instead, living a 45-minute walk in the opposite direction from where those shows happen means that, by the time I get home from work most nights, I can't be bothered slogging back downtown to some shitty pub for 10:00. 40, you son of a bitch, I can feel you getting closer with each passing day.
Anyway, it hasn't been nine months of cultural void since that Aretha Franklin show. The Gord Grdina Trio with Mats Gustafsson put on a blisteringly loud show at the Music Gallery last summer that was, all things considered, probably too much for the space until they reined it in a little ten or fifteen minutes into the set. Grdina's group was an interesting discovery, and I'm always up for more Gustafsson…

Jun 14 2011, 14h03 por MelonenmannDuring the last five years not only my musical taste experienced a great development. I also developed a new passion (indeed an all-consuming one) - the passion of visiting concerts!
It all started with Roger Waters (ex-Pink Floyd, if some of you didn't know) playing The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety and more songs in Lucca, Italy. What a fascinating experience!
And since then I had the great luck to see bands live which most people have been waiting for for years (such as Sunn O))), Neurosis, Ulver...).
Over the years I wondered if I would still have the same incredible feelings in my stomach after all these concerts or if it would come to a mere usualness. Of course the answer is NO!
After more or less 50 concerts I can say that it's still worth spending every pence on it. Needless to say that there are shows which are outstanding and other ones that are not nearly comparable with those, but they're still great experiences and all leave unique memories behind.
Ago 26 2010, 2h09 por FinSquandragoI've come to like Titan quite a bit since that "oh, heck, why not?" show in Mississauga last summer. Picked up a solid EP then, ordered the terrific follow-up a few months later, and the previews of the upcoming album are pretty much threatening to shatter every bone in my neck. This somehow hadn't translated into seeing them live again, though, until last week, and I'm kicking myself for that: a couple of weeks after that first encounter, they played at Sneaky Dee's with Sons of Otis and frickin' Jucifer, and I could probably see my way clear (in hindsight) to giving up one bollock or the other to have been there.
Anyway, another one of their semi-regular gigs at the House of Indie Nachos rolled around and a bunch of bands I had never heard of were on the bill. (Maybe co-worker Steve had babbled something about Lost Cities in my direction before...?) Less money than transit fare back to Oakville would have cost me later, I was checking out the guitar-controlled machine antics of This Is Picture…
