    8. Faust - The Faust Tapes

    7. Cable Regime - Cable Regime

A brit zártrock legutolsó lemeze.

    6. Gal Costa - Gal Costa

Be/visszalépőm a popzenébe.

    4. João Donato - A Bad Donato

Donato számomra A Stílus.

    2. Stereolab - Dots and Loops

Van benne krautrock, Voivod, no wave, ipari metál, stb stb stb, igazából akármilyen felsorolást tolhatnék ide, mindet méltatlannak érezném ehhez a lemezhez. ;)
  • X Factor Killing Music?

    Dez 13 2009, 18h57 por Apollyon_

Okay, first off, dramatic title, but I know myself that on this website I skim down artist pages, and only bold titles grab my attention. Hell, there's a good reason for it; journals here have went mostly to piss since every user and their mate decided it would be a good idea to post 'My top albums' lists ad infinitum.

It's been a while since I vented my thoughts, and looking through past journals and comments, it invigorated me, to an extent where I wish to share something that's been driving me crazy for quite a while.

The X-Factor, never off our red-banner tabloids (What's Afghanistan matter when Tiger is about, eh Sun?) or TV screens was angry to discover this week that the funk/rap metal band Rage Against the Machine's classic song TocarKilling in the Name had been chosen to spoil the fun.

On Facebook, the group is hundreds of thousands strong, a casual look at the shoutbox here on Last Fm tells us a similar story, and every rock/music blog and magazine has been shouting about it. Now, I'm all for a shake up of the mainstream charts and system. It's refreshing to see the 'alternative' music scene get their share of the publicity pie.

What annoyed me was that arrogant, smug bastard Simon Cowell's reaction. For all his millions, that man has no class - he argued that such an online movement was 'stealing' his TV show competitor's chance at a big hit. The way he said it made him sound as though he feels that every Christmas, the X-Factor winner has a divine right to a Number 1 hit. His shown has been denying EVERYONE for YEARS.

If you look at what I listen to, you'll realise I've never cared for what's top of the charts, I couldn't name you a Mika song and I detest Nickleback. That's all and good, everyone has non-subjective tastes. But what I hate is programs like the X-Factor, that manufacture talent, that water down original versions, pollute any sense of artistic meaning in music, and ram their own views down the throats of millions. This show is an abomination; a macabre mixture of the freak-show auditions, ratings squeezing rounds and then what is usually a vastly overrated, unprepared winner. How many have swam, not sank? JLS? I personally wouldn't call that talent, but each to their own.

In short, The X-Factor, and to a certain extent shows like 'I'm a Celebrity...' and 'Big Brother' are mindless, inane shows, devoid of meaning or a context in reality. Every year, I watch masses of people turn into cogs in a greater industry machine. Call me a typical black metal 'Grim' person but it disgusts me.

Buy the RATM single, hell, buy two. It's about time such trivial filth gets a slap in the face, and the X-Factor has got one, whether they get their coveted number one or not. I just hope that in result of this competition, people stop taking what they are given for granted, and look for some real, tangible meaning in what they listen to. I know some people will argue otherwise, but I can't imagine being emotionally connected to TocarGimme More without being a little shallow. When with others, particularly in a school, or social environment I feel such disparagement at what goes for meaningful music in popular culture.

Is there a difference between a musician and an artist?

PS: Hope that was coherent and better than another '20 Questions about your top 50' journal. Opinions are welcome. Thanks.

From Rotting Fantasylands - Nero's Day At Disneyland [2009]
Breakcore without dubstep but with occasional chiptunes.
The songs are more structured than Venetian Snares songs, in that the songs follow a set melody. There is a slight circus theme to the music.

Central Park Jogger - FFH and Prurient [2009]
Surprisingly, it's not a shock album, but a strong noise album with nods to the early power electronic sound, without ripping it off.
Too much distortion to be called power electronics, but takes it's cues from power electronics by adding spoken word samples, especially spoken word samples taken from the media.
Reminds me of Death Mask, with it's messy ambiance of layered analog noise.

    Alphabet 1968 - Black to Comm [2009]
An excellent album with a light, ethereal feel.
Incorporation of beats and other various samples keep the music interesting, but, like most ambient, the music is still relaxing and comforting.
Sounds like Tim Hecker or the slowcore version of an instrumental Animal Collective.

    koffing ep - Koffing [2009]
Like Lustmord with more percussion instruments that sound like Harry Partch's instruments.
It's not spooky. It reminds me of some art student's project on sound collage.

Eyes Of The Owl - eyes of the owl [2009]
Like Sleep or a heavier, sludgier Minsk.
Sparse vocals, that are never distracting, whether they're screechy or monk like chants.
Glorious heavy music to zone out to.

Central Market - Tyondai Braxton [2009]
Tyondai Braxton is from Battles. Unsurprisingly, the music sounds like it's related to Battles.
Central Market is somehow both silly and sophisticated. Due to the wide variety of instruments and how they're utilized, there's an orchestra feel to the album similar to Peter and the Wolf. In other words, it sounds like a symphony for children.
One exception is J. City, which is the only track that has lyrics and a bouncy guitar melody. Rest assured though, it's still quite unusual.

    Two Sunsets - Pastels/Tenniscoats [2009]
Sugary sweet, down-tempo, Japanese music. No thanks.

    Absence - Paper Route [2009]
    Another boring Christian band.

Gambling on the Richter Scale - Kowloon Walled City [2009]
    Rumbley, bass-driven metal.
I'm not too crazy about the singers voice. A deeper, more manly voice would compliment the music better, imo.
A rather unremarkable, but enjoyable album.
    It's a free d/l from last.fm.

    Static Tensions - Kylesa [2009]
Metal with hardcore and a hint of stoner rock/sludge. The mixture of different styles compliment each another very nicely. Also, delicious drum work is delicious.
    Running Red sounds like Minsk.

Here Be Dragons - The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble [2009]
    One of Bong-Ra's side projects.
live bootleg>mutations ep>s/t and here be dragons

Succubus - The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation [2009]
Another one of Bong-Ra's side projects; it's similar to tkde.
I think I like this better than their last album. It has less doom and more jazz, and the songs are a lot more interesting.

    Petturien rooli - Grunt [2009]
    Power electronics from Finland.
Not just another Whitehouse ripoff; they have their own sound. Interesting layering and lots of samples that give the songs a unique texture.

Still Night, Still Light - Au Revoir Simone [2009]
    Another typical girl-fronted indie band
    Pass.

    Agonist - Latitudes [2009]
    Almost instrumental, melodic death metal.
The singer's voice is pretty like a girls.

Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian - Prefuse 73 [2009]
    Mostly instrumental idm/hip-hop.
Paul White, a similar artist, managed to pull off this style much better with The Strange Dreams of Paul White. I would not say this is a bad album though; it just meanders more than I'd like. Some of the tracks could be shortened up, and some of them are boring and need to be revamped.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix [2009]
    Upbeat, indie-pop with neo-disco leanings
Reminds me of jupiter one's s/t, a lot. In their defense though Phoenix was around first, so I suppose it's really the other way around.
Fences is a pretty catchy track with Bee Gees-like vocals.

    Sunshower - Jupiter One [2009]
Much, much worse than their s/t.
They've shed most of their disco trappings in favor of simple, over-used guitar melodies.
Anna reminds me so much of the theme from growing pains, As long as we've got each other.

See the Light - The Hours [2009]
Boring, slick, down-tempo pop. Coldplay for indie kids.

    Dr. No's Ethiopium - Oh No [2009]
Instrumental hip-hop with okay beats. Kind of hit or miss song-wise.

Real Estate - Real Estate [2009]
Sounds like a Death Cab for Cutie demo, but with more post-rock and a dash of shoegaze influence.
The vocals are distorted so that it sounds like your in the room next to the singer, and you've got your head pressed up against the wall struggling to hear him sing.
I do like Snow Days quite a bit though.

Aceyalone & The Lonely Ones - Aceyalone [2009]
A rap tribute to 50's/60's pop music.
A fun album, with an interesting idea, that's executed well.

Collaborations ep - Amon Tobin and guests [2009]
A rather unremarkable release for amon tobin, but excellent release for anyone else.

    Get Color - HEALTH [2009]
Catchy mixture of rock and electronic with dreamy, disconnected vocals and delicious jungle drums.

The Bay of Future Passed - Microfilm [2009]
One of my favorite post-rock bands.
I didn't like this as much as their previous releases.
TocarBlood Sample is such a good track though. I suppose the band thought so as well since they included a piano rendition of the melody as the last song on the album.

an anxious object - Mouse On The Keys [2009]
Post-rock with piano and sometimes jazz too.
    Wavers between boring and bad.

Polly Scattergood - Polly Scattergood [2009]
Gentle indie pop with female lead singer
There's a heavy emphasis on the lyrics, which kinda suck
There's not very many female-fronted bands I like, and I feel bad about this.

There Will be fireworks - There Will Be Fireworks [2009]
Post-rock with a singer who has a heavy Scottish accent.
    The accent makes me dawwwwww.

    Daisy - Brand New [2009]
A pistache 90's alt rock sound with a little bit emo/screamo vocals thrown in.
    Not that great.

    Gutter Tactics - dälek [2009]
    Moody rap with rock/metal samples.
Almost sounds like they sample SUNN O)) or Sleep or something similar on Who Medgar Evers Was...
Los Macheteros / Spear of a Nation has a power electronic feel to the beat.

    3P - MNDSGn [2009]
Clumsy mixing of beats that don't really go together

    just A moment - 凛として時雨 [2009]
    j-rock/pop
I'm not very knowledgeable about Japanese music, but it doesn't stick out to me as being very good or bad.

    Moen - Immanu El [2009]
Post rock with hushed, crooning vocals. Has that typical Christian band sound.
I have nothing against Christian bands; I'm just against boring ones.

Further Complications - Jarvis Cocker [2009]
Terrible, like 70's rock, but without any of the soul.
I hate the lead singers voice so much.

Seek Magic - Memory Tapes [2009]
Neo-disco sound with ambient and idm undertones
    Good, but not for me.

Eating Us - Black Moth Super Rainbow [2009]
J-pop plus Boards of Canada and 70's prog.
    Enjoyable twee album.
  • It's All A Bunch of Devil Shit: Jason's Take On Music

    Nov 24 2009, 20h23 por discobeef

I work at a comic book shop. My boss, Jason is a borderline conspiracy theorist who refuses to reveal his last name or age, but likes to tell me about how back in the day he was hip and saw bands like Black Flag, The Plasmatics and The Vibrators. He'll also regrettably admit at one point being into Gary Numan, Kraftwerk and other "simp shit" that he's supposedly forgotten after years and years of substance abuse.
When I work in the storeroom I listen to music, and Jason usually has something odd to say about whatever's on. Despite not knowing his age, it's obvious he's grown a little crotchety over the years and the music I like "doesn't make any fucking sense" to him.

Here's a working list of some of Jason's comments. The last addition was on 12/23/09. New entries are in red.
    A
    • Alela Diane - "The world's going to end soon. You know that, right? This woman's music is proof of it. It doesn't make any sense that someone of this day and age would make music that sounds like that. She's playing some Civil War shit or something. The world moves in circles, and when civilizations start going backwards and retreating to the past, it's a sure sign that we're almost done for."

    B

    C

    D
    • Danzig - TocarInvocation - "Are they just going to play that one chord the whole damn song? This sounds like the soundtrack to someone dying of starvation. You'd hear this if you saw some evil monks wondering around a dark wood on their way to some sort of bullshit devil ritual. Yeah...this one's a real upbeat number..."
    • Descendents - TocarParents - "Are you listening to a recording of a cow groaning out in the wilderness?"

    F

    H

    J

    K

    M
    • Meneguar - TocarLynch the Swan Bar - This is some of that horror beach twang shit, like The Cramps but not nearly as good. This is the type of shit that Dracula listens to when he grows a vagina and decides he wants to wax his surfboard.
    • Mount Eerie - "Is that those assholes* who sit around in the woods and cry about trees?"
    • Municipal Waste - "They can't really play that fast. That's not real."

    N
    • Nachtmystium - TocarAssassins - "Damn he's mad! Like crazy mad - that's some shit you hear in a mental institution. This isn't music, it's just some pissed off wacko yelling at a bunch of doctors."
    • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - TocarThe Weeping Song - "This song would be good if it wasn't so depressing that it made me want to kill myself."

    P

    R

    S
    • Skarp - TocarFeed the Addiction - "That's just a bunch of gremlins banging on a drum. They don't know what they're doing."
    • Sleep - TocarDragonaut - "This is one of the best songs ever written. It makes me want to cruise around on my bike and pick off stray cats."

    T

    W
    • Wolves in the Throne Room - TocarAhrimanic Trance - "That sounds like someone being tortured, like someone shrieking in pain as they're being held down and branded against their will."
    • Woods Family Creeps - "Oh come on...that's just some old bag lady crooning about some dead cats. This is ridiculous. It just sounds like she's strangling a chihuahua."

    Nov 1 2009, 22h52 por FeatherofHuginn

Whether due to the steady culmination of a cult following, fan pressure, snaky cashgrabs (*cough, cough, Pestilence, cough*), or simply the will to show the new kids on the block how it's done, waves and waves metalbands have been reforming left and right over the last few years, doing tours, releasing new material (for good or bad), and generally kicking ass. This journal is a little tool I'm going to use to keep track of who's back together, and who (in my opinion) still needs to get their ass in gear.

  • BIJĄ NA UNSOUNDZIE

    Out 26 2009, 17h56 por Grzeniu

    24-25 Oct – UNSOUND Festival 2009

Soap&Skin.

A większa ilość unbalance przetykana zwolnieniami z aerial to byłaby miazga. Schade.
Ubasownione Mezzanine pełne pogłosów, ciągle zmienne i zaskakujące + mc zagrzewający publikę do boju + ugięcie stropu powyżej PN = STAL MOC.

    Niestety Zombi Srombi.

Nowa Huta. Podstawowy cel wycieczki do Krakowa. Dla mnie to jeden z tych tegorocznych albumów full of awesome.

Period.

Attila to jednak mocarz nad mocarze. Wernyhora, Chochoł i Puk w jednym.

    Pozdrawiam Serdecznie.
  • My debut article "Anatomy of a Record Contract" is now up on Metalsucks.net

    Out 2 2009, 0h52 por ArthurCormorant

This is the first entry of my new column "Tiberian Vocalizations." I'll do my best to add entries every week or so. This particular article is entitled "Anatomy of a Record Contract" and offers all the dirty details of the current state of the music industry, by dissecting a REAL record contract. You'll see first hand why we decided to self-release Metazoa.

    Give it a read here:
