It must be exhilarating and yet frustrating to have one hit song that everyone seems to define you by for ever more. For The Bluetones
this song Slight Return
was released in 1996 a huge nine years ago so no wonder the average age of the crowd at The Charlotte is just a touch higher than it normally would be.
But tonight the band - on stage looking like a group of rather dapper hobbits - is here to play a mix. New songs from their soon to be released EP Serenity Now, whilst going comprehensively through their older material or as singer Mark Morris wryly calls them, their other smash hit singles. Teasing the crowd with the opening chords of their Britpop hit but not yet playing it.
The sweet indie pop of the material new and old blends almost seamlessly, new song Happy Lobotomy
being a particular example that the band still has the ability to write a ditty with immediacy. And finally when they give in and play it, Slight Return has lost none of its freshness and the faithful are satisfied.
