Simon and Garfunkel formaram, provavelmente, a mais famosa dupla norte-americana de folk-rock dos anos 60, apresentando Paul Simon e Arthur ‘Art’ Garfunkel. Os dois se conheceram ainda no colégio, em 1953, quando interpretaram em uma encenação de Alice no País das Maravilhas (Simon como o Coelho Branco e Garfunkel como o Gato de Cheshire). Filhos da comunidade judaica do Brooklin, em Nova York, em 1957, formaram a dupla adolescente Tom and Jerry, e conseguiram um relativo sucesso com o hit “Hey Schoolgirl”. No início dos anos 60, a parceria momentãneamente se desfez, quando Paul Simon foi cursar a Faculdade de Letras, mas em 1963 voltaram a trabalhar juntos. Aproveitando a onda folk da época, lançaram pela gravadora Columbia um album acústico em 1964, que não teve repercussão. Reunia canções folk tradicionais como “Pretty Peggie-O”, spiritualls como “Go tell in the Mountain” e canções de Simon, como a conhecida “The Sound of Silence”,já com as belas e características harmonias vocais da dupla. Como venderam muito pouco, Paul Simon foi tentar a sorte no circuito folk inglês e ao retornar a América em 1965, encontrou “The Sound of Silence”, lançada em single, com acompanhamento de baixo, guitarra e bateria, no topo das paradas! A gravadora acrescentara estes instrumentos a gravação acústica de 1964 e tranformou-o num clássico do folk-rock.
Reencontrando-se com Garfunkel, Paul Simon entrou rapidamente em estúdio para gravar um novo album, desta vez com instrumentos elétricos e devidamente chamado The Sound of Silence.

Okay, why did I think Mrs Robinson was the Beatles? But still that is a great song, as is Cecilla, though if you're anal it was technically post Simon/Garfunkel breakup (ie: Simon's solo career) But still, this was one of the best groups around... And anyone who dislikes Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard is an idiot.
