Silverchair é uma banda de rock australiana formada em 1992 por estudantes de Newcastle.
A banda já teve quatro integrantes, e já se chamou Short Elvis e Innocent Criminals. No começo a banda fazia cover de bandas como Midnight Oil, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin e Black Sabbath.
Mais tarde, Tobin Finnane, o segundo guitarrista da banda, mudou-se para Inglaterra. Ficaram apenas os três integrantes restantes, Daniel Johns (vocal e guitarra), Ben Gillies (bateria) e Chris Joannou (baixo), que continuaram a tocar e compor. Quando participaram de um concurso nacional de demos chamado “Pick Me”, a sua música “Tomorrow”, que depois sairia no álbum Frogstomp, venceu e os garantiu a gravação de um videoclipe e de um álbum.
Com o sucesso ‘Tomorrow’, a banda tornou-se famosa em toda a Austrália, e posteriormente, nos Estados Unidos. Lançaram em 1997 o álbum Freak Show, que não fez o mesmo sucesso, mas fez hits como “Freak” e “Abuse Me” e mostrou alguma evolução.
Durante a turnê de Freak Show, Daniel Johns passou a sofrer de depressão e, posteriormente de anorexia. Nessa fase, ele passou a compor as músicas para o terceiro álbum da banda, o Neon Ballroom, que mesclava sonoridades diferentes. Músicas como Emotions Sickness, Miss You Love e principalmente Ana’s Song (que falava a respeito de sua anorexia) se tornaram hits.

Oh man I wish others in America would appreciate Silverchair. Even the "cool kids" who know their music haven't heard Diorama or Young Modern, and still think of them as a cock rock band. I could listen to Diorama on repeat all day and not get bored.

I saw Silverchair in concert with Powderfinger in Adelaide..and they rocked Daniel johns was an awesome front man... I dont care what any of yous say about what they did in the past compared to now bands evolve and they have..Its all Awesome...:o)

Well I've been with them since '95... I always have an objection when I hear the new songs, it usually takes me a few listens to appreciate what Dan and the boys have done. But I guess I'm a sucker for my Silverchair 'cause I end up falling in love with all the tunes.. I can only imagine what they've got in store for the next album.. =)

It's sad when the band has had a different sound for 3 albums now (and counting) which is more than 50% of their career and yet dumbasses still keep coming out of the wood work and not shutting the fuck up about how they changed their sound... boo hoo, it's even funnier cause these people are teenagers and haven't been with the band since the 90's, (they most likely got into them when they had already changed their sound). You obviously don't have ears if you think Silverchair sound like Coldplay... Never heard Coldplay do "If You Keep Losing Sleep". You obviously can't tell when music has been written to please the general public because your musical taste is so limited and closed minded. Somebody needs to get that last.fm photo changed -- that's not Silverchair.

They're not fags, they're just different now. The first two albums were pretty shit actually - two of the very first popular post-grunge albums; if you compare it to the music from Seattle, the musical composition is a lot more simple and radio friendly, and the lyrics are a lot more juvenile. If they kept on going in that direction, they would have become Australia's version of Creed or Nickelback. Thankfully, they didn't, and they instead released a fucking masterpiece, called "Diorama".
