  • Best of 2008

    Nov 22 2008, 8h09 por PrincipeAzul

    1. Beach House - Devotion
What more can you ask of an album? It's gorgeous and sad and celebratory and melancholic and hopelessly hopeful.
    KEY TRACK: TocarD.A.R.L.I.N.G.
**Pretty lackluster performance when I saw them at the Echoplex

    2. El Guincho - Alegranza
I at first thought this was bullshit music. I loved the album cover and the name El Guincho and the title Alegranza (which all attracted me to the album in the first place). But I couldn't get past the repetitiveness until I listened to the album on repeat one afternoon (Irony anyone?). Now I hear it as kind of like High Places meets Manu Chao, and that's a good thing. Actually, a great thing. I can't wait for another El Guincho album.
    KEY TRACK: TocarAntillas

    3. TV on the Radio - Dear Science,
What an improvement on Cookie Mountain. Adebimpe and the boys just needed a bit of joy. These guys are just ridiculous. I can't imagine any music lover disliking this stuff. Maybe at first you could find it odd but once you latch onto the sound you just wish all music was made the same way.
    KEY TRACK: TocarCrying

    4. Love Is All - A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night
Just like TVOTR, what an improvement! They stayed true to their sound but maybe dug a little deeper into it. I can't believe music like this is even still being made. Half a century after RocknRoll began, the mic, drum kit, bass, guitar, and sax still sound fresh as fresh! The melodies these guys create are sickening. I love it. Her voice shouldn't work but it does.
    KEY TRACK: Tocarmovie romance
**One of the best shows I've ever seen

    5. Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head
I've never heard the Tom Waits originals (but how many ppl out there fell in love with Jose Gonzalez before realizing they actually were loving The Knife?) but I don't think that discounts this album from being recognized as an amazing piece of art in and of itself. Scarlett's voice is (cough?) syrupy sweet and at the same time also as deliciously deadpan as Becky and Enid in Ghost World. The production is all buzzy and labyrinthine, kind of like the stoner cousin to Devotion. Fuck the haters.
    KEY TRACK: Falling Down

    6. Air France - No Way Down
It's a dance album wrapped in a layer of smoke and clouds. What else is there? There first EP was bomb: all tropicalia meets Enya-fied THC wonderland. The music actually transports you to a fantasy island (the plane takeoff can be heard on the first track of that first EP) and No Way Down might as well be called No Way Back. The band and all us listeners are still on that island. On ecstasy. No passport and no worries.
    KEY TRACK: June evenings

    7. Hercules and Love Affair - Hercules And Love Affair
Disco is not dead. It not only survived but it's thriving. With the Johnsons, Antony is spectacular but here he's transcendent.
KEY TRACK: TocarBlind. Literally, inarguably one of the best songs of the millenium.

    8. Portishead - Third
Still trippy and still beautifully fucked up. This is the album no one thought they could make, let alone years after the Bristol sound "died".
    KEY TRACK: TocarThe Rip

    9. M83 - Saturdays = Youth
More airy, intangible music on my list, but what can I say? It's gorgeous. Pop music made in the dark. In the clouds. In the rain. What's best is the subtlety of the tracks allow for large amounts of repeat. Which I love.
KEY TRACK: TocarWe Own the Sky (the Marble House for 2008)

    10. High Places - 03/07 - 09/07
Dreamy vocals over beats that sound like their made from a drug addict from outerspace. Outerspacemen making music for the innerspace of the listener. That's deep shit. I can't get over it.
    KEY TRACK: TocarShared Islands
**Incredible live set at the Fuck Yeah Fest

    Also Recommended:
Martha Wainwright - I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too
    Glass Candy - Deep Gems
    Metronomy - Nights Out
Antony and the Johnsons - Another World
    Zeigeist - The Jade Motel
Sigur Rós - með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
Lil' Wayne - Tha Carter III
    Santogold - Top Ranking
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Lie Down In The Light
    Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
    Madonna - Hard Candy

Albums Which I Plan To Listen To Some Day:
The Pretenders - Break Up The Concrete
    Spiritualized - Songs in A&E
Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell

Old Stuff I Was Into This Year:
    The Orchids
    The Sea Urchins
    St. Christopher
    Alton Ellis
    The Clientele
    David Bowie
    Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
    Slowdive
    The Carter Family
    Sister Nancy
    Blueboy
    Pylon
    Saint Etienne
    Valerie Dore
    Talulah Gosh
    Nina Simone
    Orange Juice

*A lot of this is not reflected in my charts because my ipod was stolen in the summer. Which was a super bummer but it also kind of got me back into making cdr mixes which is kinda cool, taking me back to high school. also, as annoying as i thought all the music snobs with record players were, this year i inherited one and so if that could be scrobbled, Nina Simone would probably be my number one artist by far.

  • ONE YEAR of Last.fm (11/21/07-11/21/08)!

    Nov 21 2008, 8h37 por MoogleFan

Today is my one-year anniversary of being a Last.fm user!!! I was interested in using it back in 2005, but, alas, I did not have high speed then, and I put off getting an account until I did so (which was not until November of 2007), and in just one year of utilizing this fine site, I...
+ scrobbled 23,000+ tracks by 1,400+ artists; first track was Gang of Four - TocarNot Great Men, I believe from choosing tag radio for The Fall or Television. I decided to put my songs on shuffle and see which one came up for the midnight posting and the track was was...Can - TocarHalleluhwah
+ added 73 friends (4 that I had known personally beforehand, and many of which I have gotten to explore their music taste and general coolness through Shoutbox communication)
+ uploaded my instrumental music in March and continued to add more tracks throughout the months (Marilyn Roxie), including a protest song against the Last.fm layout change in July
+ started a group (Rimmel), gained leadership of a few pre-existing ones: (basically, i just wanted my own group., Adam Green, John Peel, FreeMusic, Shaman King), and joined a bunch of others.
+ discovered a myriad of glorious bands due to a result of recommendations from other users and friends who are on Last.fm (THANK YOU ALL! ! !), searching through artist connections in groups, member charts, tag radio, and automated recommendations, including: Air, American Death Ray, Boards of Canada, Blood Red Shoes, The Chameleons, Crystal Castles, Dark Day, Delia Derbyshire, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Fad Gadget, The Feelies, Gang of Four, Glass Candy, Gong, The Gun Club, Ben Kweller, Ladytron, The Legendary Pink Dots, Low, Liquid Liquid, Maximum Joy, Mew, Minus the Bear, M.I.A., Mission of Burma, Pink Industry, Ratatat, Santogold, Scary Mansion, Raymond Scott, Sia, Sigur Rós, The Soft Boys, Suicide, Wire, Zero 7
+ many of friends on Last.fm have their music uploaded to the site; very good stuff!!: Cheap Mondays, Maggot Brain, Mt. Moon, John Murphy Music, Panda steps in chocolate, Streetxlite, Surukei, Richard Sydney, Tran Qual, Voidfullness
+ customized my profile with some of the normal trappings, such as a quilt of most-listened to albums, sociomap, OMI pie chart (currently non-functioning, alas), Who's Amung Us counter, most recent acquisitions + music map widget from Rate Your Music: http://rateyourmusic.com/~MarilynRoxie

Last.fm really prompted me to explore other areas of the internet for music recommendations, radio, and networking online. I also...
+ started a music blog, A Future in Noise, which I plan to utilize and promote more next year, as well as collaborate with those interested
+ got going on Robert Dimery's "1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die", starting at around 15-20% around April, now at 54% completion. Even though I may have heard of some of these before, I first really listened to and enjoyed their music as a result of trying to complete this list (I got the book, at last, a few days ago): Big Black, Nick Drake, Faust, Serge Gainsbourg, Buddy Holly, Killing Joke, Magazine, The Magnetic Fields, John Martyn, The Monks, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Ananda Shankar, The Slits, The Sonics, Tangerine Dream, The Teardrop Explodes, Tom Waits
+ signed up at MeeMix, Rate Your Music, got a MySpace Music profile, Livejournal, etc. and found these bands as a result of one or more of those sites, or from one of these reasons: watching a late-night tv show, an mp3 blog, or from a non-Last.fm person: Archie Bronson Outfit, Nicole Atkins, John Cale, Coconut Records[/artist, Leonard Cohen, Coil, Essential Logic, Flying Color, Ladytron, Mark Lanegan, Luxuria, Midnight Movies, thenewno2, Nurse With Wound, The Residents, Talk Talk, Wolfsheim, YMCK

A few of things I didn't know, prior to signing up on Last.fm (other than the bands, etc.):
    + what minimal synth was
+heck, what "scrobbling" referred to, for that matter
+ how much thousands of others and myself would cringe about a website's layout change

Many other important music-related events for me happened during this first year of being on Last.fm. I finally figured out how to use most of the functions on my Korg Triton LE Workstation, got a digital 8-track, and begrudgingly nailed down music theory / sheet music-reading concepts by taking a course on it, which turned out to not be as bad as I thought (though I still have to work through the The Who and The Doors sheet music books I got). I went to see Adam Green w/ Tim Fite in concert, lamented the break-up of Dirty Pretty Things, and saw thenewno2 live over Stickam's webcam feature, even chatting with the band beforehand with a bunch of other fans!

I'm currently working through National Novel Writing Month, trying to catch up on books I haven't read and Japanese kanji, experimenting with photography, still playing video games now and again (only just recently did I pick up The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess!); I'll be plugging along with making my music, and hopefully will be teaching a History of Popular Music: pre-1950's - 2000s class at my former school next semester! :) Despite what people may have observed from current trends, this year has seemed to have a plethora of releases and singles from bands that I already liked, and some new artists releasing brilliant debut albums. I'm definitely curious about what 2009 will bring! Thanks Last.fm, friends, and artists for making this site a worthwhile place for music and community.

  • The problem with post-rock..

    Nov 20 2008, 10h29 por Machicodi

... is that a lot of it tends to sound the same. And even if a band do not sound similar to others, do have an original sound, their albums tend to sound as if they only contained one song, not several. té for instance have, in my opinion, a pretty original sound. Their music could be described as some type of "math rock" or "progressive rock" as well. But after have listened through the first half of their debut album, I really can't tell the songs apart anymore.
There are only 5 post-rock bands, or so, who's albums I can really enjoy wihtout tiring. Well, that's not whole truth, I can get tired of some of their albums. But Sigur Rós, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Envy and God Is an Astronaut have all made at least on album each, which I truly enjoy listening to. Most other post-rock bands in my music library, only have a couple of songs which I enjoy, the rest just bores me.
I probably should be looking more and deeper, if I want to find new interesting post-rock bands.
I do also have a hard time listening to music within this genre when I'm cold. I have to be in a warm and cozy enviroment to really enjoy it.
