The idea is to go to the page of your number one artist, and follow the link of it's number one similar artist, then repeating that for this artist and so on, noting down each artist as you go. Do this until you've got to 50 artists (not including your number one). If you get any repeats, just go to the second similar artist or the nearest one that you haven't already had.

    - Rockeyez.com: “SHYLOCK brings to the table sounds that mix BON JOVI and BONFIRE, so you can just imagine how exciting the music is and that is why I am glad the band didn’t fade with the wind and resurfaced with their new release “Devotion.” 4/5
    - Myrevelations.de: “die Band hat genügend heiße Eisen im Feuer, um ein Referenzwerk des klassischen Hardrocks abzuliefern. Absolute Kaufempfehlung!“ 11/15
    - Powermetal.dk: „'Devotion' is packed with first class hard rock with hook-laden choruses, melodic and catchy songs that thankfully never get cheesy!” 80/100
    - Strutter.8m.com: „Most of the songs are in a similar style, midtempo with catchy hooks and super melodic choruses, showing there's more than DEF LEPPARD…

  • Travellin' Tunes

    Jan 5 2007, 8h55 por RocketShipX41

Yesterday I returned to Beijing after spending two weeks in Seattle, and as usual I kept my Zen going for most of the time on the planes. Since it can't submit playlists to Last.fm, I'll have to just list some of the stuff I listened to.

Richard Thompson - Grizzly Man soundtrack (actually a little too quiet to hear well over the noise)
Danielle Dax - the Comatose Non-Reaction compilation
    Shylock - Île de Fièvre
Tasavallan Presidentti - Milky Way Moses
    Miroslav Vitous - Miroslav
Dizzy Gillespie - a compilation from the late 50s
Michael Brook - Rock Paper Scissors
    Strawbs - Deep Cuts
plus the Rough Guide to Bollywood collection

Seems like there must have been something else, given how long I was in transit. Oh, Jaco Pastorius was in there.

While in Seattle, I made a couple of visits to Easy Street Records, and traded in a few CDs that were either duplicates or sucked. New/used stuff I got:

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife (maybe my pick for #1 of 2006)
    Joanna Newsom - Ys
    Krakatoa - Togetherness
  • Taï Phong season arrives

Taï Phong - Taï Phong (1975)

It's tempting to dismiss Taï Phong as prog lightweights, and would certainly be justified. Their brand of anthemic melodic rock presages many of the later neo-prog bands like IQ, and has only a few sparks of intense playing. Mostly it's very pretty, with big long organ chords or string synth (and occasional Mellotron) providing backing for the high, somewhat thin vocals. All the lyrics are in English, and none of them jumped out as either especially stupid or great. The only real bit of energetic playing is placed oddly enough in the middle of the track "For Years and Years (Cathy)" after which it goes very quiet and builds to only a moderate climax which is much less intense than the middle of the song. The longest track (I don't really want to use the word "epic") has some moments, but doesn't have the kind of power you hope for in something over 11 minutes in length.

    It's pleasant enough stuff…
  • Carpe Diem

    Mai 18 2006, 19h19 por RocketShipX41

Carpe Diem - Cueille le Jour (1977)

This is the French band Carpe Diem.

I haven't heard this band's highly-regarded debut album En Regardant Passer le Temps (1975), so can't compare the two. All I can say is that this is one fine set of tunes. They have a really nice twist on symphonic rock, adding some jazzy touches (largely courtesy of the woodwind work - a soprano sax pretty much always sounds jazzy no matter how it's played). I'm reminded mostly of Shylock, though others can probably come up with better comparisons. It may not be an accident that both Shylock and Carpe Diem hail from Nice.

"Couleurs" is the twenty-minute epic that starts us out, and it's a real winner. The remainder of the album consists of a number of tunes all under the four-minute mark. There's enough variety to keep things interesting and enough consistency to make it coherent. Great stuff. 11/15.
