No - I meant it in relation to the words of 'Gods and Devils'. Some of the songs I find a little silly (maybe that was intended?) but much of the lyrics of that record are poignant, highly relevant to the lives or at least minds of thinking people, and generally well-composed. It's not merely catchy. Speaking for this album at least, they cover new ground in theme and for certain in tone. Instrumentally, their sound is not original and I don't think intends to be. I do enjoy the music, but I bought the album mainly for its words.

LydiaKitten - Read the whole discussion, please. I wasn't dissing Seelenlicht or ORE and I have nothing against catchy tunes or pop music at all (Actually, up to this day, I was rather certain that I was defending Southgate's project :| ) Also, I have to admit that I don't have any idea what are you sorry for and why do you think that I'm "some lifestyle-elitist pseudointellectual collecting Tiki artefacts and nazi memorabilia, and listening only to old neofolk vinyls. " (I'm not saying you are wrong. I just don't have any idea where did you got this from). Actually I was just trying to say that: "it is no longer the same scene as it was in the glory days [...] So what? Seelenlicht is a decent band. They make decent songs". So why the hell are you disagreeing with me? Beside the fact that you obviously misread "trivial", "pop-like", "catchy" and "derivative" as an insults?

So, DrCaligari, something can only be interesting and beautiful if it has never been before? I fully disagree. Most music stems from somewhere, is inspired by something, resembles something. There is music as far back as the damn 60's that already gives off a neofolk "vibe". Nothing, in these latest centuries, is fully original in content and concept both. So what is wrong with catchy tunes? Or ORE being "pop-like" nowadays? The 21st centure has been band likes Rome and Stormfagel, that I consider excellent. Yes, it is no longer the same scene as it was in the glory days of Boyd, Douglas and the "gang". So what? Seelenlicht is a decent band. They make decent songs, with good lyrics. And that's good enough for a "simple mind" like mine. Sorry I am not some lifestyle-elitist pseudointellectual collecting Tiki artefacts and nazi memorabilia, and listening only to old neofolk vinyls.

btw what "name-just-one-difference-between-those-guitar-and-sad-vocal-bands neofolk of mid 90' " are you referring to? my sense of chronology is not really great but most of DiJ's clones I can think of are from late 90s/early 2000s. I hope you didn't mean The Big Three ;) btw2 zawsze fajnie porozmawiać z polakiem po angielsku ;)

Ordo Equilibrio exists from mid 90s, C93 doesn't play neofolk anymore, and though I find Spiritual Front one of most promising bands of the genre, even if they wouldn't be only exploring the ideas of Ain Soph's 92 "Aurora", they still are not very original band. all this aside, my point was that music that was made by World Serpent bands in the late 80s and early 90s where original and "avant-garde", in the meaning of the word that indicates exploring new spaces in music, nowadays "neofolk" usually means "dark" music made on acoustic instruments. it's derivative as hell and not really ashamed of it. perhaps the only thing you can expect from most of the contemporary neofolk bands is making catchy songs. but isn't what's pop music is about?

I'd disagree. Neofolk of 2010 (with still surprising C93, Rome, Spiritual Front, Kiss the Anus, gah, even pop-alike ORE) is much more varied than name-just-one-difference-between-those-guitar-and-sad-vocal-bands neofolk of mid 90'.

Whole neofolk scene as for 2010 is trivial and boring as hell. 20 years is enough to suffocate any genre with it's own conventions. Seelenlicht is at least catchy.

I understand where that impression comes in the first place, i guess it's impossible to separate Seelenlicht's music from Southgate's personal history, i also agree there are amazing neofolk albums in 2009, nonetheless i find Love and Murder a very interesting and amazing album because it shows how the band is evolving since Gods and Devils, the lyrics are way more elaborated and the stories contain much "graphic scenes" in which brutality just takes on scene, also the constant "drama" in the music joins perfect the whole atmosphere the band is trying to send, i think you mean "not so elaborate" or "not so many harmonic mouvement" when you say "the compositions are trival and simply boring" but i don't agree with that opinion, anyways it's just my opinion

I have an impression that most people claim it's a great band due to the history and personality of Troy Southgate. The music is weak, dim in obviously unplanned way (unlike f.ex. DiJ), played neglectfully, the compositions are trival and simply boring. I like the lyrics though, but there were much better neofolk albums in 2009.

i can't believe how lucky i am, i'm one of the few listeners of this amazing band, i think their music is beyond most of the music that has been created nowadays, they give us interesting musical compositions and also they give us outstanding social remarks
