  • the mixtape 26: blender - vol. 4

    Jun 15 2009, 11h58 por thesean43

This is my second-most recent mixtape, done a few months ago at, for and during my friend's party. As it was mixed on the spot, I've tidied some parts up a bit- mainly using random TV clips. I'd recommend it to anyone as there's a reasonable range of music on there, although being that it was for a party, the onus is more on pop and electronic music than I would normally choose. It's fun though. And it's definetly value for money (free).

For a link to the mixtape please email me- itsprobablysean@gmail.com or leave a message in my last.fm inbox.

It's about 55 mins long and features the following tracks:

    22. Quel est votre extrait préféré de #30 ?
    L'intro musicale, après ...

    23. Quel est votre extrait préféré de #23 ?
    "Sorry for it
    Sorry for me
Cause bees and butterflies down in my hands"

  • Black Moses has left the building....

    Ago 11 2008, 16h17 por sonnycheeebah

It is so distressing to hear two well-loved African-American entertainers pass away over this weekend...

First, there was Bernie Mac. Though I haven't seen any of his comedy routines in full length or followed his TV sitcom, I did managed to catch his low-key yet substantial roles in films as diverse as the Ocean's Trilogy (with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, et.al.) , Charlie's Angels Full Throttle (where he did a good job as the 2nd "Bosley") and even the under-rated Bad Santa. My impression of him was that he was the heir apparent to Bill Cosby, only without The Cos' pompous sanctimoniousness.

A great character actor/stand up comedian was missed...

What really floored me this very morning when I logged onto Yahoo! was that Isaac Hayes has likewise succumbed to natural causes next to his exercise treadmill in his Memphis, TN home.

Starting out as a backup keyboardist at the legendary soul label Stax, Hayes's star rose when he started penning such hits like Sam & Dave's TocarHold on I'm Comin' and TocarSoul Man

When he dropped Hot Buttered Soul in 1969, he raised the bar for R&B with tracks that tended to run for more than 10 minutes, fueled by his spoken-word interludes referred to as "raps" (thereby making him, de facto, the world's first "rapper"). Such stellar examples of these were his distinctive interpretations of Glen Campbell's TocarBy The Time I Get To Phoenix and Burt Bacharach's much-covered composition TocarWalk On By

    As per the eulogy penned by AP music writer Nekesi Mumbi Moody for Yahoo! Entertainment;

His influence also extended beyond music. His trademarked bald head, full beard and muscular frame, often adorned with a multitude of gold chains, made him a fashion trendsetter at a time when most of his contemporaries were sporting blowout Afros. He was also a symbol of black pride, and an activist for civil rights.

By 1973, when he unleashed the wucka-wuckas heard way round the world on his epic TocarTheme From Shaft, there was practically no turning back for R&B. He was getting set to tear the roof offa the sucka with his chrome dome and pimp-out threads, sensual bass-heavy beats that would lay the foundations for disco and provide source sample material for generations of hip-hop/downtempo producers and artists as diverse as Kanye West and Portishead.

Isaac Hayes on the making of the now-classic "Shaft" score

Isaac Hayes performing TocarTheme From Shaft live at Prospect Park in NYC

Trailer for Truck Turner where Isaac Hayes gets leadin' man status

Dayum....I'd like to say soooo much more but haven't got the luxury of time to do so.

Shed a tear...Black Moses aka Truck Turner has finally left the building.

  • 60,000 Tracks

    Jul 18 2008, 12h04 por Steve_Kane

Completely missed the 60,000th scrobble on account that I was moving to Glasgow and had no internet access for a while.

A bit of rummaging through my recent tracks stats and a few half-arsed calculations reveals that my 60K scrobbled track might have been...

The Good Runs The Bad Away by Sam & Dave at 6.55pm on 10 July.

    Possibly.

  • Dancing Muxtape

    Jul 15 2008, 0h22 por seandalai

seandalai.muxtape.com (link no longer works, RIP Muxtape)

I made this a while back, but of course there's no time like the present to party. 11 of my favourite dancing songs plus a requisite end-of-events comedown.

Lokonon André & Les Volcans - Mi Kple Dogbekpo
From my favourite compilation of the year so far, African Scream Contest by Samy Ben Redjeb of Analog Africa. Everyone should own this album.

Rufus Thomas - TocarThe Breakdown (Part 1)
Rufus Thomas was king of the funky novelty dance in the 60s/70s, introducing to the world such dances-your-sister-mother-brother-can-do as the Walking the Dog, the Funky Chicken, the Push and Pull and the Funky Penguin. The Breakdown is one of his more sensible contributions.

Sly and the Family Stone - Sing A Simple Song
One of the greatest basslines of all time, by one of the greatest bands.

Roxy Music - Editions Of You
Got to keep the rock kids happy, this one's for them.

Les Rita Mitsouko - C'est comme ça
When doing the musical genealogy post I realised I like very little music from the mid-/late-80s. Les Ritas are an exception, and "C'est comme ça" (one of their more hinged songs) is exceptionally catchy.

Sam and Dave - Hold On! I'm Comin'
Sam and Dave's breakthrough hit in 1966, backed up by the Stax dream team of Isaac Hayes/David Porter and Booker T and the MGs.

Hercules and Love Affair - Hercules Theme
I didn't get the original hype about H&LA and I don't get the eventual backlash either. Andrew Butler et al. do a pretty good 21st century take on the Paradise Garage end of disco, though not everything works on the album. This is one of the highlights.

Le Knight Club - Nymphae Song
I don't usually like this kind of thing, but Le Knight Club (inc. half of Daft Punk) win me over with their filtery French house done good.

Talking Heads - TocarLife During Wartime
The story goes that Arthur Russell almost joined Talking Heads in 1976, which could potentially have lead to a universe-expanding musical explosion if Russell and David Byrne had kept the personal politics under control. Another story (see here) is that Russell took personal offense to the line "This ain't no disco" in Life During Wartime, suggesting it never would have worked out. Anyway, one of the Heads' dancingest in my opinion.

Edwin Birdsong - TocarCola Bottle Baby
It's ridiculous that none of Edwin Birdsong's albums are in print. I think this song was sampled by someone or other.

Chic - I Want Your Love (Todd Terje Edit)
Can you improve on perfection? Todd Terje thinks so.

M83 - TocarWe Own The Sky
I never paid any attention to M83 until the latest Saturday=Youth album. This feels like it should soundtrack the last train home of the night with a group of teenagers offhandedly making myths, and that's probably the point.
