Some really cool chiptune electronica type stuff. Five full free albums, and two retail ones that are definitely worth it if you like this stuff. My favorites are digital ambient designs, pioneer and days, although I have yet to try chiptek. Enjoy!

Hexfire



Nice space ambient, psyprog, psychill type mixes. Each song is upwards of an hour long, and they're all free, to boot. Nice background music for reading or something, and fun to just get lost in to.

Unfortuantly, the only place I can find to download all of his music that isn't broken is from last.fm. All of the album names should be the same as the song's.



The Gasoline Brothers



Really nice indie rock type stuff, pleasing vocals, guitars, all the good stuff. I'm bad at explaining thing music that isn't electronic, so I'll just let you be the judge of what they sound like.

Cool electronic stuff, kind of dubstep-y, I think. Pretty chill, not that much to say. Some cool vocals (samples?) in a good bit of the songs, real catchy, kind of... dizzy feeling.

Wicked great breakcore / digital hardcore compilation. Lots of different great artists, and a bunch of them release free music on their own as well.

30 Days - Various



Really interesting concept album. Covers a lot of genres: mostly electronic, but some other stuff here and there. It's really long, too - 30 tracks and upwards of an hour and a half of music. :3

Nero's Day At Disneyland - grievances and dead malls



I have one way to describe this album - holy fucking shit. There is a bad side and a good side. Bad side - it's 20 minutes long. Good side - it's the best 20 minute album I have heard in my life. It's impossible to describe without listening to it and it is really the some of the breakcore I have ever heard. And it is free, so you have NO excuse to not get this, seriously. If you download it it WILL be on your repeat for a long time. You may notice how I'm saying more than I usually do - it's that good. Get it now. (Download is on last.fm) He also has some other free stuff that I'm going to check out as soon as possible, and I've heard that it's BETTER. :D

Wisp



While he has released three or four commercial albums, Wisp released a lot of free mp3 material, and I mean a lot. He released upwards of 10 EPs and full-lengths for free, and they're all pretty awesome. Most of them have a warmer and more downtempo feel when compared with his commercial albums, but they're all definitely worth a listen. I wholeheartedly recommend About Things That Never Were, Frozen Days and In A Blue Face, although all of it is at least worth one listen.

Xinon - Moonlight Sympathy



Highly recommended for fans of she, especially his more chiptune-y stuff. This album is a really nice chiptune-meets-trance sort of thing, and it's very enjoyable. :3 Chilled without being lethargic, energetic without being too intense.

Xinon vs Sabrepulse - Realization



Awesome split between two fantastic chiptune artists, Xinon and Sabrepulse. You can really feel the contrast in their styles, and it makes for a very well-rounded and awesome album. Xinon's tracks have a more trancey feel, while Sabrepulse's are a tad more poppy. I think I like Xinon's half of the split a little bit more, but I am biased towards trance, so yeah. :3 Sabrepulse's half is bad by no means, though.

Turtle Mod - Wise Device



Pretty cool glitch / idm / breakcore stuff. A bit like Nero's Day At Disneyland, but not as aggressive. This more or less describes it.

This is our first release. The music in this one drags you around the boundaries of idm, drum and bass, breakcore and glitch genres, And even while not staying in one for too long, it manages to seem constant, but not boring. The goal was to form eerie, sometimes absurd atmospheres, whilst not being necesserily dark.

Pretty fun music. I recommend it.

Pyongyang Hardcore Resistance - Corea



Really cool "underground anarchist hardcore" that was apparently smuggled out of North Korea and made by two guys. Kind of interesting premise, although it may not be completely true. >_> Anyway, it's a really great hardcore techno EP, great sampling (mild warning: they say "FUCK" several/many times >_>) and loud beats. If you're into breakcore, I'd really recommend you check it out, as hardcore techno is really awesome. Highly recommended, very good. :3

If anyone is curious about a good place to free music, I'd recommend bandcamp.com. Lots of variety, cool interface, and, if you're a producer yourself, lots of cool stats and stuff. Only real complaint is that you have to search through all of it, but it's kind of cool to hear all sorts of sounds. :3
For 8bit stuff, I cannot recommend http://www.8bitpeoples.com/ enough. Lots and lots of material, all of it very nice. :3

Fri 17 Jul – Rock Herk 2009

Doordat het gratis is is Rock Herk zowieso al geen tegenvaller. Nu ja gratis, de camping kost dan wel weer wat maar tegenover het feest dat je er voor krijgt is het niet veel. Moet wel zeggen dat er wel wat camping te weinig was. Na vorig jaar was het dit jaar weer een heel stuk drukker op de camping en hebben ze noodcamping moeten voorzien.

Op het festival zelf was het de eerste dag vooral elektronisch. Ik heb Sabrepulse, The Panacea, raffertie en mixhell gezien. waar het bij allen een zeer degelijk feestje was. Genoeg volk feel feestende mensen en goede muziek (ook de kwaliteit vond ik redelijk goed, vooral op de main stage). vooral de raffertie was een aangename verassing. wisselend dubstep, breakbeat en dnb. vrij goed gemixt.

2de dag meer op de camping verbleven door onvoorziene redenen. vooral rock deze dag maar ik ben enkelHadouken! /artist] en feadz gaan kijken. maar was wel een aangename bedoeling. Wel vrij druk op deze dag. de weide stond behoorlijk vol de hele dag.

i've watched "notes on breakcore" again, it's something i do every second month or so, and i started thinking about the last quarter or so of it. you know, where people like mike paradinas (µ-ziq) and others say that breakcore is eventually over, or at least changing into something different.

you know there were some artists arguing that because of the rising attention, "breakcore" has become a term for a genre that did not exist until other's liked the music that came out of the scene and tried to imitate it instead of being experimental and doing something new that benefits the scene or "genre" by adding new influences and ideas. instead, tons of bedroom producers releasing shit on small netlabels getting recognized by maybe 10 people per released record try not to do just music, maybe mimicking some of their favourite breakcore-artists but instead try to do "breakcore" as if there were something as archetypical breakcore. and by doing that, they actually created that archetypical breakcore. you know, even i myself have tried to subcategorize breakcore. but fuck, i mean why do we categorize something that is beautiful because of it's chaotic randomness? isn't that ruining the fun?

i also noticed that the deeper i got into breakcore, the more boring it became. i've spent this whole afternoon clicking through last.fm, desperately searching for a new fix, like i'm a junkie looking for something that's even harder.


but then, i had an idea. i mean, how many rock bands are there on last.fm? thousands, maybe houndreds of thousands. that's a lot, surely. how many rock bands are there which are NOT on last.fm? i'd say at least ten times as many. fuck, that's a lot isn't it? did that make rock music boring? well, most of it but once or twice a year i find a simple plain indie-rock (oh how i hate that term) record that blows me away and that i fucking like. so did the number of bands doing rock prevent a small number of bands from being totally awesome? nope, it's just harder to find them between the rest. and, let's face the truth: i don't know even 100 breakcore-artists who reached the point of actually having a physical release or liveshows.

in conclusio: if you're one of the guys making your own stuff (just like me ^_^), do something original or no one will notice you. remember the "loli ripe"-hype, and how many others have tried to ride in his wake since then? believe me, releasing the 1000th generic lolicore-ep (BUT MINE IS NOISIER!!111) won't get you any fans except some die-hard freaks like i am.
