  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (12-6-09)

    Dez 10 2009, 17h35 por Carpetbagger513

    Last.fm Top Artists
A slew of additions has The 9513 group up to 135 members, we’ve sent a familiar face back to the top of the Top Artists chart. George Strait is at #1 with 31 listeners and is the only artist with more than 30 this week. Brad Paisley drops from #1 to a #5 tie with Alan Jackson, Lee Ann Womack and Carrie Underwood, all with 23 listeners. Sugarland isn’t getting much of a boost from its Christmas album, as the former perennial #1 artist sits at #9 with 22 listeners. Coming in at #10 is Sara Evans, who had 21 listeners, along with Dwight Yoakam. Evans has normally ranged between 14 and 18 listeners. Ryan Adams had 15 listeners to lead the Americana artists. For those looking for a little more traditional country, Jamey Johnson had 15 as well, putting him between Jennings (14) and Jones (also 15) — and Rascal Flatts (15), which definitely doesn’t fit with the song.

    Last.fm Top Albums
Miranda Lambert managed the top two albums on the chart, with Revolution having 20 listeners and Kerosene having 13, along with Underwood’s Play On. Evans charted very well here also, with Born to Fly landing at #7 with 11 listeners, tied with Paisley’s Time Well Wasted. Evans’ four other albums had 8 listeners each, so her fans in the group had an all-out listening party last week. Womack also fared well, as Call Me Crazy had 12 listeners, I Hope You Dance had 10 and There’s More Where That Came From had 9. Of course, Underwood managed to get 100 percent of her discography in the Top 10, so I guess she wins. Let’s see her try that when she’s 10 or 20 albums into her career, though.

    Last.fm Top Tracks
Of the 11 songs in the Top 10, only three are by Lambert, which is low for her. Of course, “TocarWhite Liar” and “TocarDead Flowers” were #1 and #2 with 10 and 9 listeners, respectively. Lady Antebellum also had 9 listeners for “TocarNeed You Now.” Three of Womack’s finest songs, “Ashes By Now,” “Last Call” and “I May Hate Myself In The Morning,” all had 7 listeners. Maybe people needed a change of pace after hearing “There Is A God” or something. Trisha Yearwood’s “This Is Me You’re Talking To” had 7 listeners who can tolerate poor grammar when it’s sung well. Just outside of the Top 10 sits Lady GaGa with “Bad Romance” and its 6 listeners. Look, it’s bad enough “TocarCowboy Casanova” is #4 with 8 listeners; I don’t want to have to start writing about too many pop divas at once.

    Billboard Country Songs
Reba McEntire moves up to #3 with “TocarConsider Me Gone,” and she’s going to have to bump “TocarNeed You Now” and Luke Bryan’s “TocarDo I” off to get her 23rd #1 single. David Nail moved up a couple spots to #8 with “TocarRed Light,” and it looks like the country stylings of Dave Matthews couldn’t give Kenny Chesney a chart-topper, as “I’m Alive” slips from #6 to #9. “White Liar” keeps climbing the right way, making it to #11. Unfortunately, so does “That’s How Country Boys Roll” by Billy Currington, which enters the Top 20 at #18. The big gainer for the week was Paisley’s “TocarAmerican Saturday Night,” already at #21 after five weeks. Underwood’s new single, “TocarTemporary Home,” starts its climb to the top by debuting at #48.

    Billboard Country Albums
Taylor Swift and her legion of Grammy nominations moved back to the top spot and was in fact the sales gainer for the week… meaning there were still some people who hadn’t owned Fearless. Now that’s been remedied and we all have a copy or two, it can drop off the charts, right? Her self-titled album also had a bump from #10 to #7 after 162 weeks on the chart. Underwood’s Play On falls to #2 after a three-week run at #1, and Sugarland continues to see its Green and Gold album move up the charts, entering the Top 5 this week. Diamond Rio, who’s still on the country charts for some reason, saw The Reason take a big jump from #56 to #42, just one spot behind its peak position. The big debut of the week was Jimmy Wayne’s Sara Smile, which showed up at #32. First Dave Matthews can’t score a #1 hit, and now an album with a Hall and Oates lead single can’t debut inside the Top 30. So much for star power.

    Americana Music Association Chart
Last week’s Top 4 is this week’s Top 4, with The Avett Brothers moving into the Top 5 with I And Love And You. Rosanne Cash’s The List had an add this week, meaning that we’ve found the world’s slowest Americana program director. It had 454 spins overall, giving it nearly 4,000 plays to date. New to the Top 10 is Yonkers NY by Chip Taylor, in at #8 from #14, and TocarCircles Around Me by Sam Bush, from #13 to #10. Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) and Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) debut at #33 with One Fast Move Or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur, the music for a Jack Kerouac documentary. The lyrics are taken from Kerouac’s Big Sur novel.

    Freebie of the Week
Talented folk/Americana singer/songwriter Mando Saenz is giving away his 2008 album, Bucket… provided you help him gain some new fans. Go to www.mandosaenz.com and submit your e-mail address, as well as the e-mail addresses of three friends, and you can download the album for free. If you’re feeling generous, you can download a digital copy by paying what you want, starting at $1. This strategy worked pretty well for Radiohead, so it would be nice to see Saenz do well with it. Two of the songs from Bucket, “TocarCome Out Tonight” and “TocarCandy Red,” are also available for download on his Reverb Nation page.

  • Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (top Albums of the 00s)

    Dez 5 2009, 2h42 por thisisall1word

There's a last.fm ruling which I hope only applies to the forums and not yr own journals... I may have had a bit to drink. Dammit, that's allowed now.

Listening to Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker which was released in fucking 2000 - nigh 10 years ago... where did that time go?

It's an old story that we still tell... but I remember where I was when I bought this album; a poor boy half way home from work, between buses, in Enfield Town, loitering in HMV and looking for inspiration. I had heard Oh My Sweet Carolina and I had heard of Whiskeytown if not heard Whiskeytown.

The CD was played many times on my old knackered CD player, bought 2nd hand from a school friend for my Christmas present in 1997 - my first CD player after years of vinyl and tapes... the CD player would always skip half way through To Be the One which made me curse the stereo and threaten it with various acts of extreme violence.

This CD never got played in company. It's an introspective affair. Bedroom listening, for your ears only. It's my Whinchmore Hill soundtrack back when I discovered country music - or Americana or whatever - and started buying Uncut magazine and playing my acoustic more than my electric.

It's a hell of an album. A 9/10 job. An old friend. The little harmonies that join and leave the vocals throughout the album anchor the sentiment and act as the earth wire to Ryan's sometimes surging lines - acts of restraint that are absent in many of his later albums.

I've learned many a song on guitar but my favourite to plat is Damn, Sam (I Love a Woman That Rains) - which is guitar heavey but the piano is the important instrument here - guitar solo works fine - except of course that anyone ever addressing a 'Sam' must be a drunk barfly piano playing and sighing...

The whole arrangement of the LP seems sparse, possibly a hangover from Whiskeytown, and the cleanliness and space frame the songs very clearly. Compare this to Strangers Almanac which is a driven album, propelled by guitar and volume, Heartbreaker is mopping up after you hit the breaks. I bought both albums around the same time and they always form a pair in my mind.

Anyway, this was 10 years ago and seeing as we face the end of a decade I thought I would reminisce - this album stuck out from a lot of others I loved - this will be in my top ten albums of the 00s I am sure.

OK, drunken stream of near conciousness over.

  • The 9513 Last.fm Chart Update (11-22-09)

    Nov 25 2009, 2h06 por Carpetbagger513

    Last.fm Top Artists
If anything cam be taken from this week’s charts, it’s that The 9513 fans are not beholden to pop culture and the media to dictate their listening habits. Either that, or no one’s gotten the memo that Taylor and Carrie are the biggest things in country music right now. Probably the former, though. For the second straight week, Miranda Lambert is the #1 artist, with 32 listeners, leaving the rest of the group in the dust. Carrie “Hot Pants” Underwood comes in at #3 with 25 listeners, along with Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash and Brad Paisley. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, finished with 22 listeners, leaving her at #11 along with Dwight Yoakam. Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and Gloriana, the other big country winners at last night’s American Music Awards, had 17, 13 and 10 listeners, good for #27, #42 and #79, respectively. We’re so counterculture. Speaking of, Ryan Adams led the Americana artists with 14 listeners, with Hayes Carll and Rosanne Cash with 13.

    Last.fm Top Albums
The triumvirate of Underwood, Swift and Lambert had six of the 13 albums in the Top 10, with Revolution at #1 (22 listeners), Carnival Ride at #2 (18) and Fearless at #3 (15). Two new releases, Underwood’s Play On and Tim McGraw’s Southern Voice (11) came in at #7. Terri Clark made it to #10 with The Long Way Home (10). Those close-but-not-quite-Top 10 albums included Darius Rucker’s Learn to Live, Gretchen Wilson’s Here For The Party and Eric Chuch’s Carolina. Right at the bottom of the list, mixed in with some very good albums, there is Kristy Lee Cook’s Why Wait, with 5 listeners. I guess it’s a testament to the album that two years removed from being the designated country castoff from American Idol, she’s still getting listeners. I just don’t want to see any of you all putting Danny Gokey’s country album on the charts, okay?

    Last.fm Top Tracks
Lambert’s “Time To Get A Gun” and Lady Antebellum’s “TocarNeed You Now” both had 10 listeners to lead the way, with David Nail’s “TocarRed Light” had 9 to be at #3. After that, it’s a barrage of Underwood and Lambert tracks, with only a handful of male singers getting any significant showings at all. Paisley’s new single, “TocarAmerican Saturday Night” had 7 listeners, as did the Garth Brooks classic “TocarFriends in Low Places.” Reba McEntire had 8 listeners for “Consider Me Gone,” and Gloriana had 7 for “TocarWild At Heart” to lead the way for the other female/female-dominant acts.

    Billboard Country Singles
After a week at #1, Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” falls back a spot, making way for “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum. Those two relatively new acts will have to compete with McEntire, who’s got her hottest single in years with “Consider Me Gone.” It moves up to #4.Craig Morgan’s “TocarBonfire,” for whatever reason, is one of the hottest songs on the chart, moving from #10 to #6. Maybe you have to be from the backwoods, hicktown, small town USA to appreciate it. The next batch of singles are already making their way up the charts, as Paisley’s “American Saturday Night” jumps from #41 to #30, Urban’s “’Til Summer Comes Around” debuts at #41, and Zac Brown Band debuts at #54 with “Highway 20 Ride.”

    Americana Music Association Chart
Cash’s The List pushes its way to #1 this week, with 520 spins putting it almost 100 ahead of its closest competitor, Robert Earl Keen’s The Rose Hotel. The biggest gainers were Chip Taylor’s Yonkers NY, which moved from #19 to #14, and Chuck Prophet’s Let Freedom Ring, moving from #24 to #15. The only debut for the week was singer/stone mason (seriously, check his Web site) Kevin Deal, who starts at #38 with 7 Seven. David Rawlings Machine had 13 adds for A Friend Of A Friend, so it’s likely to have a strong run on the chart when it gets released.

    Freebie Of The Week
If you’ve never spent time at the Live Music Archive at www.archive.org, you really need to. It features more than 70,000 full-length concerts, all legally available with the artists’ permission. The sound quality isn’t always perfect, depending on how the concert is recorded (occasionally you can get one recorded directly from the sound board), but you can easily lose a day or three checking around the site. Just through a few minutes of perusal, I found Corb Lund covering “Seven Spanish Angels.” He did a killer version of this when I saw him live, so I’m glad to have a version of my own. The quality is outstanding, too. Check it out here (http://www.archive.org/details/corblund2006-11-30.sbd.flac) and have fun exploring.

Gruff Rhys - obviously knew him from the SFA. I've met him too.

    3. Who is your favorite member in 1?

Gruff (SFA)again as everything he does is genius. I've more in common with Bunf though.

Bruce Springsteen. A couple of DVDs. Have kept a few concert tickets too.
