  • 2009 in music, a personal overview

    Dez 31 2009, 11h47 por marco78train

Looking back on 2009 I can’t say it was a great year. Musically, nor personally. It did have its moments though. The year brought many good records, but so far I haven’t heard one that completely blew me away. I must note here that I haven’t heard many of the critics favorites yet, so I might change my mind on 2009 later on. ;-) Today, however, I can only write about what I now know.

Not until I saw The Decemberists perform their Hazards Of Love album at the Crossing Border festival it dawned on me that this was the record that impressed me most this year. The cd is very good, but live it sounded really fantastic. In fact, the concert was one of the best I ever attended, perhaps only surpassed in greatness by those of Bruce Springsteen (2008) and Ben Folds (2007).

I also liked the new and more traditional sound Alela Diane presented on her second album. I don’t think it’s a complete masterpiece, but it contains many beautiful songs. Her concert in Utrecht was another highlight in 2009. The most pleasant surprise came from A Fine Frenzy. Her debut didn’t really caught on with me, but Bomb In A Birdcage got me hooked. Then there was the beautiful Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart by Rachael Yamagata, which was officially released in the Netherlands in 2009, though it actually dates from 2008. Also highly recommended are the records by Laïs Lenski, A.A. Bondy (somewhere between Josh Rouse and Ryan Adams), Madison Violet (two pretty girls singing beautiful folksongs), Marissa Nadler and Pearl Jam.

My hero Bruce Springsteen also made a very nice record, Working On A Dream, but since it doesn’t rank among his best work, I decided not to list it in my top 10. The same goes for John Mayer. I really like Battle Studies, but it doesn’t impress me as much as Continuum, which is one of my favorite records of the decade. Finally, Alexi Murdoch deserves a special mention here. His Time Without Consequence is not in my top 10, because it was already made in 2006, but since I didn’t discover it until its official Dutch release this year, it definitely deserves a few words, because it is one of my greatest discoveries of 2009.

    10 best records of 2009

    1. The Decemberists - Hazards Of Love
    2. Alela Diane - To Be Still
    3. A Fine Frenzy - Bomb In A Birdcage
    4. Rachael Yamagata - Elephants… Teeth Sinking Into Heart
    5. Rufus Wainwright - Milwaukee At Last!!!
    6. Laïs Lenski - Laïs Lenski
    7. A.A. Bondy - When The Devil’s Loose
    8. Madison Violet - No Fool For Trying
    9. Marissa Nadler - Little Hells
    10. Pearl Jam - Backspacer

I didn't see as much concerts in 2009 as in previous years, because there weren't that many artists I wanted to see and I missed out on Wilco, but I attened some truly great gigs this year.

    5 best concerts of 2009

    1. The Decemberists (The Hague, November 21)
    2. Natalie Merchant (The Hague, November 20)
    3. Emiliana Torrini (Utrecht, September 24)
    4. Lucinda Williams (Utrecht, July 10)
    5. Alela Diane (Utrecht, July 14)

Of course, 2009 wasn’t all about new music. In my case, it may even have be more about old music. My biggest discovery of the year, for example, is a guy who has already been around for more than a decade now. For some reason or other, I just could never really get into his music. This year, however, viel het kwartje, as we say in Dutch. And that is why you can find five of his records among the cd’s I added to my collection this year. According to Last.fm Release The Stars was the record I listened to most this year and Going To A Town and Tiergarten are my Top 2 songs. Bruce Springsteen is the only artist that gained more plays in my library this year.

The two best cd’s I bought this year are without a doubt the 30th anniversary edition of Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run and Hounds Of Love (with bonustracks) by Kate Bush, since those were already among my Top 5 albums ever. Since I already had those on lp, they are not in my list of favorite pre-2009 discoveries made this year.

    These are, in alphabetical order:

The Handsome Family – Singing Bones
Alison Krauss & Union Station – New Favorite
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss – Raising Sand
Alice Russell – My Favourite Letters
    Slowdive – Souvlaki
Stars – Set Yourself On Fire
    Candi Staton – Candi Staton
Rufus Wainwright – Release the stars
Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
Betty Wright – The Platinum Collection

This was my year in music. If anybody thinks I missed out on some great music, please let me know! I wish everyone who took the time to read this a great 2010. The prospects for the new year definitely look good! ;-)

  • Best Albums of 2009

    Dez 28 2009, 10h11 por foxyluva

    20. Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue

This was a great comeback. And I didn't expect it to be. They manage to capture the emotion of the old band without trying to sound like the old band. Credit goes to Jerry Cantrell for managing to pull this all together without embarrassing themselves. Hopefully they are able to follow this up with an album just as good, and I hope it doesn't take another fifteen years to do it.

    A Looking in View: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeCiaQ49uMs

    19. John Vanderslice - Romanian Names

John is always reliable. I enjoy every single one of his albums, and this is no exception. Songs like "Tremble and Tear" "Fetal Horses" and "D.I.A.L.O." are among some of my favourite John Vanderslice songs ever. The songs range from great to average, but there isn't really a stinker in the bunch. What I really love about this album is the production. It's just to easy to listen to, and the use of synths is great. Really good and understated album.

    Too Much Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ou7FnmExvU

    18. Michelle Shocked - Soul Of My Soul

This is nothing like the great folk and country albums she made in the late 80s and early 90s, but it is not as bad as the misventures into mexican and reggae and jazz that Michelle has experimented with in her last few albums. This is a pop album. It appears that maybe Michelle has finally found her stride again. Soul of My Soul is the best Michelle Shocked album in 15 years and hopefully she will keep releasing albums of this quality for a while.

    Other People: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-fK941W54E

    17. Shirley Bassey - The Performance

This is Shirleys first album of new material in 20 years, and it's hard to believe that it has been that long since we have had a new album from one of the greatest voices in music history. And after having to wait so long, the new album does not disappoint. Featuring songs written by Rufus Wainwright, Manic Street Preachers, KT Tunstall and the Pet Shop Boys made me worry that maybe Shirley was trying to do an album a little more hip akin to her cover of P!nk's "Get the Part Started", but while there is nothing here that will bring in any new fans, this is a tasteful and dignified and beautiful album brilliantly suited to a woman in her 70s and just as listenable as her 60s and 70s records.

    Almost There: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzIhNddkB2Y

    16. Son Volt - American Central Dust

I know there has been some less than good reviews of the latest Son Volt album, some calling it "safe" or even "lifeless", but I couldn't disagree more. It is great to hear a Son Volt album minus the horns and minus the studio trickery that went on in the last albums "The Search" and "Okemah and the Melody of Riot", and it's great to get just a good country album from Mr. Farrar. To my ears this is a total return to form. And the new album Jay made with Ben Gibbard "Music From Kerouac's Big Sur" confirms that Jay has taken a back-to-roots approach to his music again. And to me thats a good thing.

    Highways and Cigarettes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiGrpY7h92M

    15. Norah Jones - The Fall

I have always liked Norah Jones. I can't say I was ever a massive fan, but I always found the time to listen to each of her albums, and found most of them to be enjoyable, if not unremarkable. But I have to say, for the first time I really found myself really enjoying a Norah Jones album. I recall seeing the first single "Chasing Pirates" on TV and thinking it was one of the most cool songs I have heard this year. It had a hook I couldn't get out of my head. And the rest of the album features collaboratiions with Ryan Adams, Jesse Harris and Will Sheff from Okkervill River, and they do not disappoint. This is a good album, and a great new musical direction for Norah. I'm looking forward to see what she comes out with next.

    Chasing Pirates: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTxythHY09k

    14. Hiss Golden Messenger - Country Hai East Cotton

I have massive hopes for this band. Featuring vocalist M.C. Taylor and guitarist Scott Hirsh from one of my favourite bands The Court & Spark, they have returned this year with a new band and a new independently released album. While this album does not reach the brilliant heights they set with the Court & Spark albums "Witch Season" and "Bless You" (the latter being one of my favourite albums of all time), it does continue with the reggae influence they built on the last Court & Spark record "Hearts". Songs like "Hey Diamond" "Isobel" and "Lion" are just as great as anything Mike and Scott have ever done. You can order the limited edition CD or download the album via a pay-what-you-want scheme direct from the band from the Heaven and Earth record shop http://heavenandearthmagic.com/shop I'm looking forward to what comes next!

    Nathaniel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_QP1Y_Vg_0

    13. Candi Staton - Who's Hurting Now?

Along with Bettye LaVette and Solomon Burke, Candi Staton is currently releasing some of the best music she has ever released. Collaborating with Mark Nevers of Lambchop, "Who's Hurting Now?" and the previous album "His Hands" are beautiful soul/country records that is as good as anything I've heard from Candi. Featuring songs from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's Will Oldham, Mary Gauthier and legendary 60s songwriter Dan Penn, this is a brilliant, funky, awesome country/soul album. Aretha Franklin should take note.

    Cry Baby Cry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWeMkHuzOaU

    12. Robert Pollard - Elephant Jokes

I'm not a massive follower of Robert Pollard. I have a few Guided by Voices albums, and only ever picked up one of his many solo albums, so I am not sure why I bought this one. But something told me to get it, and I am glad I did. Most of the songs are under 2 minutes, catchy and weird. And considering he is such a prolific artist (the back of the album says "Another Big Batch of Robert Pollard Songs") it really is amazing that he can keep writing such great music. I really found myself enjoying this album, and it has made me want to check out more of his stuff. But where to begin?...

    11. Soulsavers - Broken

Anything Mark Lanegan touches is gold. This time his second collboration with Soulsavers features songs by Mike Patton and newcomer Red Ghost. This is a dark and pretty sad album, with great songs. The cover of the Palace Brothers "You Will Miss Me When I Burn" is worth getting the album alone.

You Will Miss Me When I Burn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DZHyNpQCLI

    10. David Kilgour & Sam Hunt - Falling Debris

This album is the stuff of kiwi-legends. David Kilgour of the legendary Flying Nun band The Clean and legendary performance poet Sam Hunt join forces to release a great album. While Sam Hunt doesn't actually appear on this album, he worked closely with David during its recording, and David Kilgour set some of Sam's poetry to music. This is an awesome jangley pop album, and my favourite kiwi release of the year.

    Chord: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr4LwlboTDM

    9. Neil Young - Dreamin' Man Live '92

I didn't have high hopes for this one. In fact, I wasn't even going to buy it. But I had some extra cash, and I was in the mood for some retail therapy, so I decided to take the plunge. And this really took me by surprise. This is basically the 1992 Harvest Moon album, live and acoustic. The sound quality is pristine, and the songs all sound beyond amazing. In fact, I prefer most of the songs this way. "One of These Days" "Harvest Moon" and "Natural Beauty" sound so good I can't imagine going back to the studio versions. The only thing missing is the stunning vocals from Linda Ronstadt that were on most of the originals. Most of Neil Young's Archive Series are brilliant live albums, but this one for some reason really stands out to me, and I can't wait for the next.

    Such A Woman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiGG9G8pmQg

    8. Bob Dylan - Together Through Life

Together Through Life is a very strong latter-day Dylan album, mostly written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Although I can't help but feel slightly disappointed, probably because his last albums "Time Out of Mind" "Love & Theft" and "Modern Times" are among my favourite albums of all time, and are lyrically and musically as strong as anything Bob has ever done. While this is a slight step down, there are some great songs on this album: "Beyond Here Lies Nothin" is one of the greatest Bob songs in years. "I Feel A Change Comin' On" and "Life is Hard" are stand outs too. Overall this is merely a good Bob album, and not as essential as his last 3 releases. It was also a treat to get "Christmas In The Heart from Bobby this year as well. While it isn't an essential album either, it does show Bob having more fun on a record than I have heard in years. The fact that we got two Bob Dylan albums this year was incredible.

    Beyond Here Lies Nothing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZDnTjyB7og

    7. Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist

Portugal. The Man is one of the most exciting bands I discovered this year. These guys are incredibly prolific, already releasing 5 albums and 3 EPs since 2006 including two this year alone and another due in the first quarter of 2010. "The Satanic Satanist" is a move towards a more approachable pop sound than the last albums, and much shorter, clocking in at under 35 minutes. Songs like "People Say" and "Everyone Is Golden" are among my favourite songs of the year.

    People Say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63f4RGOl6DU

    6. Echo & The Bunnymen - The Fountain

This is another album released this year that has people divided. While the post-1997 Bunnymen is hugely different to the Bunnymen of old, so if you are a fan of albums like "Crocodiles" and "Ocean Rain" it is safe to say you wont like "The Fountain". However, if you like the latter career of the band, then this album shouldn't disappoint. This is the best Echo & the Bunnymen album since "What Are You Going to Do With Your Life?" in 1999. It is fun, poppy and upbeat and clocking in at under 40 minutes, there is no room for any songs to drag. Like most of the latter day Bunnymen records, this album takes a little time to sink in, But once it did I couldn't stop listening. Top album.

    Forgotten Fields: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUEtW_es37M&feature=related

    5. Matt the Electrician - Animal Boy

Matt the Electrician was my favourite new discovery this year. "Animal Boy" is easily one of the most witty and intelligent and brilliantly written albums of the year. His song "For Angela" about trying to buy a car battery from Target, cannot help but make me laugh every time I hear it. He very much reminds me of Todd Snider (who also released a great album this year). Another surpirse here is the cover of Journeys "Faithfully" which I didn't even recognise on the first listen. It's so good I couldn't even tell it was the Journey song. This is a warm album that I can imagine him sitting in my living room singing these songs to me. Highly recommended.

    Faithfully: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umO1uxi82VQ

    4. Levon Helm - Electric Dirt

Levon Helm has found his second wind. Starting with 2007s "Dirt Farmer" and now "Electric Dirt". Along with Bob Dylan, Levon is releasing some of the best music of his career right now. While "Dirt Farmer" was more acoustic and explored country music, "Electric Dirt" is far more rock n' roll and blues based. Featuring covers of songs from Nina Simone, The Grateful Dead, Muddy Waters and Randy Newman, as well as a few originals. And while his voice has changed dramatically because of his bout with throat cancer that nearly claimed his voice, this easily stands up with his best work with The Band and his great solo album "American Son". Awesome.

    Tennessee Jed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZaU3VtMfoM

    3. Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band - Between My Head and the Sky

I had high hopes for the new Yoko Ono album. "Yes! I'm A Witch" was a brilliant album, but it had been almost 9 years since her last all new material album. "Rising" was a great record, which many regard as her greatest and most approachable work. And this probably had a lot to do with the producer, Sean Lennon, her son with John, who really seems to know how to get the best work out of his mother. So this time around she has worked with Sean again, and with even better results. Reviving the Plastic Ono Band monkier, "Between My Head and the Sky" is the most vital and defiant Yoko has sounded to my ears. Songs like "Waiting for the D-Train" "I'm Going Away Smiling" and the title track find Yoko taking on the subjects of life and death in a simple and relateable way. This is THE best place to start if you are intested in Yokos music. And at this stage of her career and life, that is no small feat.

    2. R.E.M. - Live at the Olympia

This is one of my favourite live albums of all time. I know that is a massive call, but this quite simply is the most exciting live show I have ever heard. It is brilliant to hear a band almost 30 years into their career run through the older and lesser known songs with such energy and enthusiasm. It sounds like R.E.M. may have found their muse again. And after the decent, but underwhelming last few releases I wasn't sure they could. This is easily the best R.E.M. release since "New Adventures In Hi-Fi". Peter Buck cranks up the guitar, Mike Mills is brilliant on the bass and Michael Stipe sounds better than ever. I could talk about this album for days, but nothing I say can do it justice. It's just a pure awesomeness that people will be going back to 20 years from now.

    1. Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

This was without a doubt my favourite release of the year. But it wasn't always that way. When I first heard the leak of "People Got A Lot of Nerve" I was in all honesty, totally underwhelmed. And when I first got the album I was totally underwhelmed. Where albums like "Blacklisted" and "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" were very Louvin Brothers, and the new album was more...pop. It was strange to hear Neko singing what were almost power pop songs. But the more I listened to it, the more it sank in. And now I can't understand why I was so underwhelmed by it in the first place. It is just so catchy yet mature, pop yet country, and dark yet happy. Most of the subject matter deals with love, and there is a lot concerning animals, which is so awesome to me (why dont more artists sing about animals?). Neko is one of the most interesting and exciting lyricists around, and her voice is instantly one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. I don't think she could ever do any wrong in my eyes, and I can't wait for her next record.

  • My Albums of 2009 with My Wishlist and a few other things by Me

    Dez 20 2009, 14h30 por BlackCoffeeDuck

Well the year is almost over again and everyone is making lists of albums of 2009 so I'm going to too. This year I'm going do a top ten of My Albums which are the ones which I've went out and bought the real thing that you can hold in your hands. No downloads here if I couldn't be bother to find the CD it's not really here in front of me now so call me old fashioned. Also I'm going to do My Wishlist of this year which is CD's I haven't got but if someone needs a Christmas present or ten. Plus a few other things which I think I'll start with now.

    TRACK OF THE YEAR:
    The Drones
    Suicide is Painless
I've been waiting for this for a long time now. I don't know how many times I've watched the video for this song on JTV, it's a Triple J radio's Like A Version cover song. Volume five has just come out and I went out and got the CD just for this track, is that mad? It's got some of the most bleak and depressing lyrics ever written but The Drones members are laughing at them throughout the song which kind-off juxtaposed it. I've written a whole journal about this track earlier so have a look in my older posts if you want to know more.

    EP OF THE YEAR:
    Magic Dirt
    White Boy EP
This EP was released after the passing away of Dean Turner which is the saddest news of the year because he was so young still, only 37. Dean was a founding member, bass player and their producer. Recording these last tracks which ended up being his last before he passed away Friday August 21st, 2009 and a statement from band said: "For nine years, Dean battled an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer called dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP)... Being a very private man, Dean chose to fight the cancer in a quiet and dignified manner. He displayed great courage and incredible stoicism. And above all else he had an unshakeable positive attitude throughout his long ordeal. White Boy is from their last album. Two duets: Summer High (featuring Rowland S. Howard) and Love Is The Armour (featuring Gareth Liddiard), deep in a net of red, valley of the rose plus the epic ten minute last song Future Fuck.

    REISSUE OF THE YEAR:
    Beasts of Bourbon
Box Set with the first three albums: The Axemans Jazz, Sour Mash and Black Milk
Finally you can get these albums on CD, they were deleted forever and these three albums are their best by far. The original line-up of Kim Salmon and Spencer P. Jones on guitars, James Baker on drums, Boris Sujdovic on bass and Tex Perkins on vocals. The little booklet that comes with the box is very cool too with a lot old photos which I haven't seen before and liner notes by all the band members, not some music critics talking wank.

    DVD OF THE YEAR:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Your Funeral... My Trial (2009 Digital Remaster) Do You Love Me Like I Love You (Part 4) by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard
I really hate music documentary DVDs most of the time and just can't sit through them most of the time. But these talking heads and how it's filmed and edited together is really, really, really cool. Warren Ellis also says this is his favourite Bad Seeds album and I have to agree with him. To have a new copy of it is great is wicked too because my old one is totally falling apart so beaten up.

    SOUNDTRACK OF THE YEAR:
    Various Artists
    Palermo Shooting
A new film by Wim Wenders which I haven't seen. It's got new Grinderman, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Matt Sweeney, Sibylle Baier tracks. Original score by Irmin Schmidt plus tracks by Portishead, Iron & Wine, Calexico, Velvet Underground, Beirut, Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man and more, well, 21 tracks in total. Wim Wender has written the liner notes as an A to Z thing with just over 30 pages.

    LIVE ACT OF THE YEAR:
    The Drones
Seeing them twice this year as a full band and then seeing Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe playing acoustic too. These where unbelievable shows and I can't wait for the next time they come to town. Havilah winning my 2008 album of the year and now if you buy it you get a bonus disc of Live At The Hi-Fi which I downloaded because I wasn't going to buy the same CD twice but it a great live album so I do wish I had the real thing. The Drones are already starting to working on a new album.

    MUSIC BOOK OF THE YEAR:
    David McComb & The Triffids
Edited by Chris Coughran & Niall Lucy
A truly great book about one of the best Australian singer-songwriters and rock groups with all sorts of different writing styles, old color and black & white photos, drawings by Martyn P. Casey, and more all on beautiful gloss paper. This would have to be by far the best music book of the year. Nothing would be close to this and could be one of the best music books ever really. Check it out here: http://www.fremantlepress.com.au/books/currentaffairs_culture_social_history/1104

    RE-RECORDING OF THE YEAR:
    Warren Fahey
Australia Folk Songs and Bush Verse: Bushrangers, Bolters and Other Wild Colonials
Well I think I have to explain this one a bit. This is new recording of very, very old traditional Aussie tracks. There are more themed discs in this series, or you can get two box sets of all of them but this is the only one I got, if you want more info have a look here: http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=304626&SearchID=2382722&SearchRefineID=4902015 I think re-recording is the best thing to call this album plus he hasn't gone too far from the old arangements of how these songs would have been played two or one hundred years ago.

    WISHLIST OF THE YEAR:
    TEN
    Warren Fahey
Australia Folk Songs and Bush Verse: Rare Convict Ballads and Broadsides

The other album I would like from the above series.
    NINE
    The Blackeyed Susans
    Reveal Yourself
Three CDs and DVD box set from a great but mostly forgotten Aussie band.
    EIGHT
    Rihanna
    Rated R
The best pop album of the year.
    SEVEN
    Animal Collective
    Merriweather Post Pavilion
The best album cover of the year and the music is pretty wicked too.
    SIX
    Kasabian
    West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
The best British rock group of the year.
    FIVE
    The Flaming Lips
    Embryonic
The best American rock group of the year.
    FOUR
    Tinariwen
    Imidiwan
The best African rock group or World music of the year.
    THREE
    Beak>
    Beak>
The best side project band comes from Geoff Barrow of the legendary Portishead.
    TWO
    Fever Ray
    Fever Ray
The best electronic artist of the year. The best Nick Cave cover with Stranger Than Kindness which is on the updated version of the album from early this year but I have yet to see it.
    ONE
    Rowland S. Howard
    Pop Crimes
Rowland S. Howard first album in ten years so I really should have this already. Early this month, Howard admitted that he has had liver cancer for awhile and is now awaiting a transplant so wishing you to get well soon Rowland.

    VIDEO CLIP OF THE YEAR:
    Bob Dylan
    Must Be Santa
It's the week of Christmas but this is so funny, Bob in silly hats and a wig, dancing a polka, standing next to Santa Claus at the end and he re-names the reindeers after Presidents of the United States if you listen carefully. This is the best track on the album, maybe The Christmas Blues is the other cool one or should I say the song I like best. It's directed by an Aussie guy called Nash Edgerton.

    ALBUMS OF THE YEAR:
    TEN
    Bob Dylan
    Together Through Life
Coming at the tail end of my top ten this is the other Dylan album and not his Christmas one. Really not as good as his three previous ones but those are some of his best ever albums so it would be hard follow them. Most of it was written with Robert Hunter. The best track is This Dream of You is Bob's only "solo" song on this album but the whole thing is not bad for a 68 year old.
    NINE
    Marianne Faithfull
    Easy Come Easy Go
I love a good cover songs album. Who else but Marianne Faithfull could get Cat Power, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright and Keith Richards to sing backing vocals. She sings two real duets with Antony on TocarOoh Baby Baby and Somewhere with Jarvis Cocker. My favourite track is the classic Neko Case song TocarHold On Hold On but this cover has Warren Ellis playing an epic electric violin solo at the end.
    EIGHT
    Various Artists
    The Rockwiz Duets Volume 3
Another great cover album full of duets this time from the Aussie TV show. With tracks like Adalita & Gareth Liddiard doing The Saints' Messin' With The Kid, Amanda Brown & Glenn Richards doing Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood's Some Velvet Morning, Patience Hodgson & Broderick Smith doing MGMT's Time To Pretend, Eve Von Bibra & Jed Kurzel doing The Bee Gees' To Love Somebody, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson doing Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head, Sophie Koh & Steve Kilbey doing The Go-Betweens' Streets Of Your Town and so many more.
    SEVEN
    Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
    White Lunar
I love Nick Cave & Warren Ellis but one disc of new stuff, another disc of tracks I've already got. And now The Road soundtrack which is coming soon or you can download now. They are really pushing it at the moment and Cave publishing his very silly dirty jokes book this year too. Dirty Three are touring soon and still hoping for a new Dirty Three album but it sounds like it's going to be a new Grinderman one. All the bitching to one side the second disc is some of the best music they have both done and by far the best thing Cave has done this year.
    SIX
    Titus Andronicus
    The Airing Of Grievances
The best newcomer of the year goes to these guys and this is the best debut album in a long time. This was recorded in 2008 but not released here in Australia until the beginning of year. With The Monitor, the band's follow-up to The Airing of Grievances, will be out on March 9 which I hope that is here too and I don't have wait a year or something. According to singer Patrick Stickles in a press release, the LP is "sort of" a concept album about the Civil War: "It doesn't take place in olden times, nor does it necessarily feature any characters that participated in that conflict. Really, it is a record about how the conflicts that led our nation into that great calamity remain unresolved, and the effect that this ongoing division has on our personal relationships and our behavior and how they're all out to get us (or maybe not?) and yadda yadda yadda."
    FIVE
    Laughing Clowns
    Laughing Clowns Live
I love a great live album and this is the second one here, the first was the Rockwiz album. This is the seventh volume in the new prince melon bootleg series. If you didn't know Prince Melon is a nickname Ken West gave Laughing Clowns back in the late 70's and early 80's when they were around the first time, this is a reunion tour album. Ken West is now one of the men who runs something called The Big Day Out tour but his first job in the music business was manager, door man, lighting guy and all rounder for Laughing Clowns. It's a pity they're not on this years line-up and it's more of a pity that they're not coming over to Perth, but the best reunion band of the year is Laughing Clowns.
    FOUR
    The Mess Hall
    For The Birds
This band has always been in the shadow of The White Stripes like the Aussie version but with this album and latter turning into a very pricey DVD side project and one of the many novelty for Jack White. After The Mess Hall winning a lot of award money from their last album Devils Elbow which payed for time and space to do this one which is even better and by far the best thing they have done and taking the two piece band format above and beyond anything that has been done before and others will now have to keep up with these guys, the best band of the year.
    THREE
    Bill Callahan
Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
Bill Callahan was called Smog for years and years but went "solo" a couple of years ago and now has painted his masterpiece on his 13th album. From the beginning to the end this is one of the most beautiful and wonderful albums. Him adding the strings is a great addition, so my male artist of 2009 is Bill Callahan.
    TWO
    Sarah Blasko
    As Day Follows Night
What can I possibly say about Sarah Blasko's As Day Follows Night album that has not been said before now. More perfect that her last and grows more and more with each listen. She has painted her masterpiece on this only her 3rd album. From the beginning to the end is totally breathless record, so my female artist of 2009 is Sarah Blasko.
    ONE
    Tom Waits
    Glitter And Doom Live
I don't know if anyone else would name a live album as their album of the year but it's Tom Waits. Maybe he wins by default because this is the last album I bought. Anyway the reason is I would love to see him live and I have no hope of him coming here. This is brilliant and wicked so it would be unbelievable to see him live and this is most likely the closest I'll ever get. Better that his two other live albums 1988's Big Time and 1975's Nighthawks at the Diner and with Tom Tales a 1/2 an hour long track as a bonus disc which is classic in it's own right, he could be the best stand-up of the year. So my album of the year is Tom Waits' Glitter And Doom Live.

P.S. I don't know if you heard this but someone called Michael Jackson died this year too.

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 8 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

  • List your top 10 last.fm artists, then list your five favorite songs by each

    Dez 15 2009, 20h41 por laurienicole

This might take me a while, but I think it's worth a try! My Top 10 changes sort of frequently (although Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd are always vying for the top spot) so the exact artist position might not remain 100% accurate, but the favorite songs will. I also tried to put the favorite songs in order with my most favorite song first.

    1. Syd Barrett
Love You, Here I Go, Long Gone, Rats, I Never Lied To You

    2. Pink Floyd
See Emily Play, Brain Damage, Echoes, Candy And A Currant Bun, Bike

    3. Led Zeppelin
What Is And What Should Never Be, D'yer Mak'er, Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman), Rock And Roll, Going To California

    4. Roger Waters
The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range, Sexual Revolution, Every Stranger's Eyes, Amused To Death, Go Fishing

    5. The Doors
Moonlight Drive, L.A. Woman, I Looked At You, Summer's Almost Gone, Peace Frog

    6. David Bowie
Lady Stardust, The Prettiest Star, Ashes To Ashes, Sons Of The Silent Age, Diamond Dogs

    7. Radiohead
Let Down, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, The Trickster, Idioteque, Like Spinning Plates

    8. T. Rex
Life's A Gas, Jeepster, 20th Century Boy, Mambo Sun, Get It On

    9. Ramones
Glad To See You Go, Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, I Want You Around, What's Your Game, The KKK Took My Baby Away

    10. Rufus Wainwright
Sanssouci (fun fact: this is also my favorite song of all time), Dinner At Eight, Between My Legs, In My Arms, 11:11
