Alright, so. I've decided I'm going to create this list of my top 100 songs of 2009. It's not according to my charts, not according to play count or anything like that, but according to how many times I've repeated certain songs in the car or had them trapped in my head or just feel like applauding before the year is over.

Bij deze lijstje II: mijn top tien van favoriete concerten van 2009
(op chronologische volgorde)

1. The Black Box Revelation
16 januari op Eurosonic, Vera, Groningen
Twee Belgische jongetjes (gitaar/drums) van nog geen twintig spelen bluesrocknummers alsof ze de rock gisteren zelf hebben uitgevonden. Hard, groovend, knallend, vet, pakkend, indrukwekkend.

2. Steen
17 januari op Noorderslag, Groningen
Utrechter Steen blijkt een vervaarlijk het publiek inkijkende rapper-van-de-straat. Een opgefokte kruising tussen Eminem en Def P., die zijn intens negatieve raps met raspende stem de zaal in slingert op keiharde beats. Ook sidekick Spinal is niet mis. Samen zetten ze een akelige sfeer neer, die volstrekt uniek is in Nederhopland.

3. Magma
13 februari, Casino de Paris, Parijs
Progressive rockgroep Magma heeft zich voor zijn veertigjarig jubileum opgesplitst in twee bands: voor de pauze spelen bassist Jannick Top en zanger Klaus Blasquiz met twee drummers, een pianiste en een zangeres twee lange wat gothic- en trance-achtige stukken met een tergend langzame maar trefzekere opbouw. Na de pauze krijgen we het 'echte' Magma met Christian en Stella Vander, aangevuld met een zanger, een zangeres, een gitarist, een uitstekende bassist en twee keyboardspelers. Hun muziek is een stuk lichter en bevat classics als Hhaï in één lange, intense suite. Aan het eind komen beide bands bij elkaar voor een even feestelijke als slordige monsterversie van De Futura. Als extra toegift zingt Christian Vander nog met zijn vocalisten een prachtig soulvol lied in het Kobaïaans. Met zijn drie-en-een-half-uur aan intense en krachtige muziek een concert om nooit te vergeten.

4. Charlie Winston
26 februari, Studio Desmet, Amsterdam
Engelse singer-songwriter, die met een percussionist/cachónspeler/mondharmonicaspeler in no time de hele zaal inpakt met vlotte, mooie en innemende liedjes. Grote klasse.

5. Peaches
8 mei, Melkweg, Amsterdam
Kleine dame Peaches blijkt een rasentertainer en een echte popdiva met diverse outrageous costumes. Zij en haar uitstekende en al even opvallend geklede band bespelen de Max met gemak in een aanstekelijke en feestelijke show, waarin electro, electroclash, house en garagerock elkaar afwisselen, en waar in de uitgebreide toegift zelfs plaats blijkt voor een kronkelende degenslikster...

6. Nisennenmondai
18 mei, De Affaire, Nijmegen
Drie Japanse meisjes (gitaar, bas, drum) spelen met hulp van een looper hun versie van krautrock, die nu eens techno-achtig klinkt en dan weer tegen noisy avant-garde schurkt. Communiceren met het publiek doen ze niet, maar vooral de uitbundige muziek is intrigerend, net als hun muziek.

7. Oumou Sangare
20 mei, Paradiso, Amsterdam
Oumou Sangare presenteert haar eerste album in vele jaren met een uitgelaten band die fusion (funkbas, fluit) combineert met traditionele klanken (kora, klankschalen). Haar stemgeluid en stage persona zijn indrukwekkend en ze bewijst andermaal de koningin van de Afrikaanse muziek te zijn. Bijgestaan door twee bloedmooie zangeressen/danseressen, pakt ze een helaas maar halfgevulde Paradiso volledig in met een bevlogen show, die het publiek zowel kippenvel als wil tot dansen bezorgt. Grote klasse.

8. Lucy and The Popsonics
20 juni, Ekko, Utrecht
Braziliaans duootje van een ruig meisje op bas en een nerdy bebrilde gitarist die een nauwelijks gevulde Ekko (ca. 30 man) volledig inpakken met hun korte, maar wervelende show, waarbij 'Lucy' de zaal inspringt en beiden op hun instrumenten te keer gaan op de electrobeats uit de laptop. Zeer aanstekelijke electropunk. Met fijne Sepultura-cover.

9. Blitzen Trapper
16 augustus, Ekko, Utrecht
Sympathiek zeskoppig rootsy indiebandje uit Oregon, dat een levendige mengeling speelt van oude prog (Yes, Roxy Music), sixties roots (Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead) en moderne indie (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors) in uitstekende puntige liedjes. Zelden een set meegemaakt die van begin tot einde non-stop boeide, maar dit was er één!

10. Dirty Projectors
20 september, Melkweg, Amsterdam
Veelkoppige indieband onder leiding van een lange lijs, die met een hoge stem zingt en daarbij wonderlijk hoekig gitaar speelt à la Captain Beefheart. Zijn originele en bloedmooie liedjes worden ondersteund door drie zangeresssen (waarvan er twee ook gitaar spelen), een bassist en een drummer met een uitgeklede drumset met maar één crash. Vooral de complexe vocalen zijn betoverend. In één nummer voeren de meisjes zelfs een razendsnelle hoketus uit, met een bijna elektronisch effect-achtig resultaat. De Dirty Projectors blijken in staat hun complexe album live he-le-maal waar te maken en laten zo het publiek - ondanks hun wat steriele uitstraling - in totale bewondering achter.

Vancouver based Terror Bird released the excellent Sociopaths Are Glam cassette this year which made our year end list, and gave us a sneak peak of what's to come for the band. We asked Terror Bird's Nikki Never about some of her favorite things in 2009, from Vancouver bands to missing cats and perfect burritos, this is what she came up with:

Favorite musical things:
Vancouver bands Vapid, Defektors, Sex Church, PhoneCalls, Petroleum By-Products, Zombie Pistolero & His Guns, Juvy, Mode Moderne, Adjective, Certain Breeds aren't really new discoveries, but they are bands that I have gone to see or listened to at home and liked/loved in 2009. There are actually too many good Vancouver bands to list! Another Vancouver band that I really like, but haven't gone to see yet is called Peace. My goal for 2010 is to go see them. However, my biggest complaint about Vancouver bands is that most of them don't tease their hair and wear sleazy, glittery outfits. The only ones that even try to do this are the girls from Vapid. But they don't tease their hair.
Outside of Vancouver, I like the music of Wavves, Night Wounds (although they broke up), Mental Stagnation..all from California, I think. This is the year I discoverd Death in June, which is actually a very old band. Today, Jeremiah (from Terror Bird) showed me The Saints, an old punk band and I really loved that too. I also love Arctic Monkeys.
Older artists I've been listening to often in 2009 are The Smiths, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Death in June, The Fall, The Rolling Stones, Roy Orbison, and Roxy Music.
This year, I discovered La Roux and Bat for Lashes. Both of them are female, became famous this year, and have great songs. It's good pop music. I was starting to think pop could never be good again. I also discovered Katie Stelmanis after my roommate told me about her. I tried to interview her and she didn't respond to my questions, so we're 'in a fight' now. Something else happened to me...I started to like Lady GaGa after really, really not liking her for at least a year. I guess if you hear something enough times, it just gets drilled into your head.
