  • An Old Alt-Country Mix

    Ago 19 2008, 11h48 por heatherc

Shortly before I began writing last.fm journals in 2006, I put together [url=http://www.[spam nofollow=yes]/download/17277326fec2f916/]this alt-country mix. I could probably update it with newer bands like Glossary and The Dexateens or create a second volume of all the artists I missed like Neko Case, Slobberbone, etc., but at least for the moment I’m going to post it as is. At some point I’ll look to see if there’s enough artists who started up after 2000 to warrant a second mix of more contemporary artists. Well, most of these artists are still going strong, but at this point they’re classics, not upstarts. This post came as a prompt by a comment on my country music journal. Alt-country is a great stepping stone into pure country; if you’ve been listening to rock all your life, the pure stuff can be overwhelming. This doesn’t have a lot of deep cuts, so if you’re a long-time fan of alt-country you probably have most of this. Here’s the tracklisting:

    Alt-Country Mix
    1. Uncle Tupelo - Graveyard Shift 4:43
    2. Bottle Rockets - Smoking 100's Alone 3:15
    3. Peter Bruntnell - Murder In The Afternoon 3:51
    4. Grey DeLisle - The Hole 3:04
    5. Naked Omaha - A Year 3:35
    6. Richard Buckner - Blue And Wonder 3:47
    7. The Walkabouts - Buffalo Ballet (John Cale) 3:27
    8. The Handsome Family - So Much Wine 3:48
    9. Fred Eaglesmith - Water In The Fuel 5:20
    10. Jon Langford - Over The Cliff 1:57
    11. Bobby Bare Jr. - Flat-Chested Girl From Maynardville 3:59
    12. Kelly Hogan - Sugarbowl 3:25
    13. Otis Gibbs - Small Town Saturday Night 3:35
    14. Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Last Song About Satan 3:10
    15. Steve Earle - Fearless Heart 4:06
    16. Anna Fermin's Trigger Gospel - Blame Me 3:00
    17. Son Volt - Tear Stained Eye 4:21
    18. Frog Holler - Spiders And Planes 4:10

  • Viva Variety!

    Nov 3 2007, 14h29 por RandyB1961

I've seen several variations on this exercise, so I thought I'd try one:

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.

Here is my list of unique artists:

  • okkervil river @ the independent - "mind blowing"

    Set 7 2007, 6h44 por dpollard

Wed 5 Sep – Okkervil River, Damien Jurado

i usually get annoyed with the sound at the independent but last night's show sounded really good. go independent.

Damien Jurado opened. i was only vaguely familiar with his music before the show. he took the stage with two other musicians. he played acoustic guitar (except the last song on which he played drums) and the other two rotated through electric guitar, drums, gloch and keys. all sang. i really liked the sparse arrangements. all the tones were very nice. damien has a warm baritone voice that only occasionally reveals a rougher side. he reminded me of David Bazan (of Pedro the Lion) and Richard Buckner. perhaps a little David Berman (of Silver Jews) in there too. unlike these three fine musicians though, damien writes lyrics that are at best unremarkable and at worst laughably poor. i believe one of his songs had the lyric, "she can sink me, like titanic". this could have been funny but damien didn't act like the tongue and cheek type (he maintained a very serious face throughout the entire performance). i wish i hadn't heard this specific lyric because the next thing i know i'm focusing on the lousy lyrics and ignoring the music, which was excellent from start to finish. i enjoyed the set but also somewhat at the expense of damien's writing.

i didn't go out to see random bands or to drink $5 belgians, i went to see Okkervil River. i saw okkervil at cafe du nord in 2005. they had just come off a month straight of shows in europe and sadly will had nearly lost his voice. he was a mega trooper and played a full set, at the end of which he wasn't able to produce much more than a whisper. the band certainly won my utmost respect for that performance. fwd to 2007. new album out. at first i hated this album. Black Sheep Boy was such an amazing album that my expectations were a touch on the high side. The Stage Names sounded shallow and at times derivative on a first listen. in the last month i've come to really appreciate nearly the entire record. will is a master lyricist and songwriter and he's in full force on the new record. the show was brilliant. while the show at cafe du nord was heartfelt, the show last night was a huge step up in many ways. the sound was great. apparently they had their own sound guy and according to travis (drummer and friend of a friend of a friend) they've been encouraging him to experiment with a more active live mix. on TocarSo Come Back, I Am Waiting the sparse snare hits would explode and linger together with the trails of will's verses. they were full of fun twists and variations on their songs. many instrumental intros and altros that sounded like they could be new material until the band fell into something familiar. all around they were tight and full of energy. i don't remember all the songs they played but here are some of them. i imagine that someone was either recording the show or taking notes. anyway, here's my stab at it out of order:

Lyrically, What Are We Fighting For? is just as multifaceted, addressing subjects like the difficulty of relationship, racial reconciliation and the futility of war.

  • Tim Easton, Paul Burch, Matthew Ryan---The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC

    Fev 16 2007, 18h02 por tweedyfarrar

Sat 10 Feb – Tim Easton, Matthew Ryan, Paul Burch

Tim Easton- Paul Burch- Matthew Ryan---- The Grey Eagle, Asheville, NC

I was really excited about this show, particularly with the addition of Paul Burch to the billing. I had seen Tim Easton play before at the Village Tavern in Mt. Pleasant, SC and he was particularly good. Performing solo acoustic, he is an engaging performer and his songs really translate well live.

Unfortunately for me, Tim Easton, who I had thought was the headliner, came on first and only played for about 30 minutes. He was still very engaging and I particularly enjoyed the new songs he played as well as such favorites as "Black Dog", "Poor, Poor LA", and "Dear Old Song and Dance". He even played one song on the piano and frequently accompanied himself on the harmonica. He was using one of Matthew Ryan's acoustic guitars and his equipment troubles may have been part of the reason for the brevity of the set. He is currently working on a new album, which according to his email is going to be headed in a more "rocking" direction. So, stay tuned for more information on that and I'll play it on "Dead, Drunk, and Naked" as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Paul Burch was next. I had heard about him multiple times, but never really checked him out before. He was cool, dressed all in denim, he switched back and forth between guitars and sang mostly upbeat 50's style songs. My favorite song may have been the opener "Montreal", but his set was uniformly pretty cool. He may have lacked the stage presence of Easton, but his songs were pleasing enough. He made a reference to Buddy Holly early in the set and that stuck with me throughout, as their styles sounded really similar. He also pseudo-covered a Bob Dylan's "I Want You", he either just stole the chorus for his own song or changed the verses depending on how you want to interpret it, but nonetheless it was pretty cool.

Matthew Ryan was next and carried with him two additional guitarists (one played bass a couple of times). His attempts to carry the spacey atmosphere songs over into a live environment were hit and miss, though I particularly enjoyed a song called "Providence" that had quite a few verses. He played mainly acoustic guitar, while his sidemen played electric, adding the texture to the songs. He had one cool stage moment, where referred to his harmonica holder as "Americana bling", that the rest of the audience either a) didn't get or b) didn't think it was as funny as I did.

The Grey Eagle is a great place to see a show. It's not much to look at from the outside, but inside they have a bar and grille (located at the opposite end of the stage area), as well as a fairly large stage space with chairs and even some couches set up for the audience. The ceiling rafters had Christmas lights hanging above the audience and the house music was pretty cool (Richard Buckner, Iron & Wine, more Richard Buckner, and did I say Richard Buckner?). The only downside was the temperature was a little on the chilly side.

Look for my review of the spectacular Gillian Welch & David Rawlings show soon!

Well, I guess everyone knows what Pandora is...

Today I decided to get to know some more artists.

    My new discoveries are:

    Kristin Hersh
    Richard Buckner
    Powderfinger
    Beth Orton
    Barzin
    Bert Jansch
    Brian Deer
    A.J. Croce
    Stephen Fretwell
    Papas Fritas
    Crooked Fingers
    The Black Heart Procession

I also noticed that I didn't have many songs by artists that I already knew:

    Fates Warning
    3 Doors Down
    Ben Harper
    Ben Folds

Mostly piano-pop and piano-rock, some folk stuff... I needed something emotional.
