  • Ironic indirect influences on nu-metal

    Ago 25 2009, 1h11 por HuskerDuMaur

This is something that's been on my mind recently:

You all know that nu-metal bands took an assload of influence from funk metal bands like RHCP, Jane's Addiction, Primus, Mr. Bungle, and Faith No More, but the funny thing is that the bands influencing their influences are so vast in genres and yet have nothing directly to do with their sound. I made a list of such bands:

    XTC
    Talking Heads
    Frank Zappa
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band
    Devo
    The Residents
    Peter Gabriel
    Bauhaus
    Bob Marley
    Parliament
    Funkadelic
    The Germs
    The Stooges
    The Velvet Underground
    Rush
    Pink Floyd
    Oingo Boingo
    Grateful Dead
    King Crimson
    Sly & The Family Stone
    Jimi Hendrix
    Fela Kuti
    The Smiths
    Public Image Ltd.
    Dead Kennedys
    Brian Eno
    Black Flag
    Burt Bacharach
    Bad Brains
    Gang of Four
    Minutemen
    The Doors
    David Bowie
    The Jesus and Mary Chain
    The Cure
    The Beach Boys
    Roxy Music
    Siouxsie and the Banshees
    Ennio Morricone
    John Zorn
    Queen
    Sammy Davis Jr.

  • Top 50 artists thing. blah blah blah.

    Fev 23 2009, 0h50 por deep_zeppelin

I'm bored...so here it is. Something about my top 50 artists.

    1. What's your favorite song by 14?
Iron Maiden - TocarHallowed Be Thy Name (especially the Live After Death version)

    2. How did you get into 20?
Tom Petty - I think it was just from hearing various songs on the radio and being like...wow, this guy is good!

    3. Who is your favorite member in 8?
Guns N' Roses - I guess Slash. Axl Rose is a moron and everyone else isn't all that good. Oh, and Slash isn't a bad guitarist either :P

    4. What's your favorite lyric bit by 29?
    Upsize - I don't even know.

    5. Have you ever seen 22 live?
    Cannonball Adderley - I wish

    6. What's your favorite album from 10?
Deep Purple - Yikes that's hard since they have so many albums, but I think right now my favorite one would be Deep Purple in Rock

    7. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
fleet - Besides CDs and vinyls? No.

    8. What is a good memory you have of 7?
The Doors - uhh waking up to The End is actually sort of cool.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
    Led Zeppelin - No way!

    10. When did you first get into 1?
The Velvet Underground - It was a very gradual process. First my sister had their debut album and I listened occasionally...then they just got to me one day. And from that day on...nothing in the world was the same.

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
Sublime - Quite a few people I would say.

    12. Which song did you first hear from 15?
    Cinderella - TocarNobody's Fool

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
Jefferson Airplane - TocarWe Can Be Together

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?

    17. How long was 19 a band before you liked them?

  • Sunflower - Good British Jazzy Rock (Unsigned) - Updated

    Jan 14 2009, 19h45 por mellors-

Sunflower (If you didnt already guess from the title,) currently unsigned band from Leicester in the UK, so If you're a fan of quite laid back rock with a jazzy touch and catchy melodies, or imagine that'd be your cup of tea (English cliches ftw) then check them out at the below links. The vocals might take some getting used to, but once you do they work well and the band plays some tightly performed and well written tunes, evoking some nice atmosphere but with a good pop sensibility.

You can now find full track plays of 5 of their songs on an album of recordings from their first session a few months ago here:

    Sunflower Demo

And also 2 tracks they recorded for a local radio station, Demon FM.

    Live at Demon FM

There are other artists called Sunflower on that page, but only those recordings so far are the Leicester area group.

    P.s. Not my band.

    Ruckus Collective
The band really took off in 2008, playing over 30 gigs (actually only up til August/September), visiting a few different cities and recording a full-length studio album, Stop, Drop, Dance!, during a crazy period after uni exams in June. Earlier in the year we also self-produced a five-track EP, Rise Of The Ruckusaurus. Apart from that I played the odd function gig here and there around Bristol, and plenty of jams - always good fun.

    Broadcasting
While I was in Bristol, I had a weekly show on BURST Radio called Off The Hook. It was a really cool experience and I played a lot of different tunes, as well as being joined by several guests from the local music scene. I won't go into detail here, as this is already too long, but you can see the myspace page for info and playlists. [Some of my friends have taken it over this year, as I'm not attending uni at the moment, so tune in!]

Many thanks to anyone who's had a look at this post - all the best wishes for Christmas and the New Year!

    peace,

  • Reasons why 1973 was the best year music has yet seen.

    Out 10 2008, 20h59 por joewatson406

I've created a list of inspired studio albums released in 1973 designed to confirm my belief that that year was, as the title of the journal suggests, the best year for music. If only I had been born then! I believe that pretty much every album mentioned speaks for itself, but a couple of notes have been added anyway.

If anybody has any that they feel could be added to this list, then do let me know. More evidence is always better :). Or if anyone disagrees, and can argue their case, I'd love to find a large quantity of music better than this!

In truth, mind, I think that the first four albums listed should be enough, but in case their not for you, I hope to bowl you over by quantiy of quality rather than the cream of quality. If that makes sense. It does in my head :S.

Anyway, without further ado, I give you epic awesomeness...

    01. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

This album is the definition of epic awesomeness. I could sing the praises of it for ages, but due to a desire not to bore you I will force myself to be restrained, and will merely inform you that it is the top rated progressive rock album on http://www.progarchives.com/, a must-use website for any progressive music fan :).

It is also worth noting, however, that Genesis released their first live album, Live, earlier in 1973. They also released the single from the album, TocarI Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) with the EPIC B-Side TocarTwilight Alehouse. Why that was never released on an album I shall never know.

    02. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    03. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
    04. The Who - Quadrophenia

I've been instructed by Dan to comment on the brilliance of this album, even though I would have said that that was self evident. So there you have it. It's brilliant.

    05. Wings - Band on the Run

For a list of largely prog-based albums, Band on the Run may, at first sight, appear to be a strange choice to be included in this list. However, it is easy to see why this album is considered Paul McCartney's finest post-beatle work. I would also argue that Linda McCartney's additions to the songwriting and Dennie Laine's guitar work take Wings onto a mucial level that the The Beatles never reached, and that Wings never achieved the same level of success that they undoubtedly deserve.

    06. Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

Far from the best album in the list or that Yes have done, but included for three reasons. Firstly, it demonstrates that, although not a particularly special album, Yes did do an album in 1973. Secondly, it has The Ancient (Giants Under The Sun) on it. And finally, it gives me an excuse to mention their live album Yessongs, also released in 1973, and which is nothing short of breathtaking.

    07. Status Quo - Hello!

OK, so maybe Quo may not exactly write the finest music in the world, but Quo are the finest no-nonsense rock and roll act who essentially defined a feelgood sound that no band since has successfully replicated (I stand to be corrected), and Caroline must be considered a signature tune. The album also features Roll Over Lay Down and Blue Eyed Lady.

    08. Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony

    Wonderful - Trully wonderful music!

    09. Jethro Tull - A Passion Play

    .
The following are a list of artists and albums which were also realeased in 1973. I have no particular reason to comment about them, and they aren't necessary to solidift my point. But still, all of them are fantastic, most of them prog, and I thought I'd mention them.

    10. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
    11. Queen - Queen
    12. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
    13. Deep Purple - Who Do We Think We Are?
    14. Campo di Marte - Campo Di Marte
    15. Hatfield and the North - Hatfield and the North
    16. Perigeo - Abbiamo Tutti Un Blues Da Piangere
    17. Rick Wakeman - The Six Wives Of Henry VIII
    18. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
    19. King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
    20. Tangerine Dream - Atem
    21. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Io sono nato libero
    22. Gentle Giant - In A Glass House
    23. Le Orme - Felona E Sonora
    24. Area - Arbeit Macht Frei
    25. Return to Forever - Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy

  • 10 Jazz Fusion Essentials

    Set 26 2008, 17h39 por hemlokk

    by Tom Moon

Fusion has meant many things, but the initial hit, spelled out by Bitches Brew, was simple: jazz improvisations over a rock-like rhythm bed. Tailor-made for hotshot electric guitarists and synthesists, it went through many changes from its Seventies heyday. Now, even such pablumized instrumental pop music as Kenny G's gets labeled "fusion". The squishiness of the term makes it impossible to arrive at a definitive list of 10 fusion titles - does Frank Zappa, architect of so much impossibly technical jazz-rock count? Do British prog-rockers like Steve Hillage and Gong? What about the abstractions of Ornette Coleman circa "Dancing In Your Head"? Rather than cover the waterfront, we concentrate on guitar-oriented fusion albums from some of the genre's major figures.

    al dimeola
    Splendido Hotel (Columbia, 1979)
When Al DiMeola first appeared on the scene in 1974 as a member of Return to Forever, his fleet-fingered runs and dramatic careening phrases set the bar just a little bit higher for fusion guitarists. But it took a few years of record-making until he found a sound that was more than just nerdoid noodling. Though there are plenty of guitar pyrotechnics on Splendido Hotel, they're tucked into all the right places of the stop-start workouts "Dream Theme" and "Alien Chase," and, remarkably, they rarely detract from the overall mood.

    Jimi Hendrix
    Band of Gypsies (Capitol, 1970)
Fusion purists may quibble with this inclusion, but there's no denying that Hendrix' last trio, with Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox, was playing something that was not simply foursquare rock or booty-shaking funk. Whatever it was, it sure had lots of mind-bending guitar improvisation in it. Many fusion guitarists, including McLaughlin, have cited Hendrix as an inspiration, and "TocarMachine Gun" and "TocarMessage of Love" offer plenty of reasons why. His lines twist and contort into exquisite shapes, and his harangues are alternately driven by road-warrior rage or an unusually contemplative lyricism- and these qualities, as much as the sheer dense force of this trio, had an influence on everyone exploring music in 1970.

    Weather Report
    Heavy Weather (Columbia, 1977)
There's no guitarist on this commercial breakthrough, but there might as well be. Playing fretless bass and pitch-bending like he's determined to stretch the neck, Jaco Pastorious brought a guitarlike sense of phrasing to this protean group and showed that it was possible to possess superhuman virtuosity, yet play with a deep appreciation of melody and a lyrical sixth sense.

    Return to Forever
Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (Polydor, 1973)
With Hymn, Chick Corea created a dauntingly detailed, intricate music full of spry melodies and subversive counterlines, in which the individual contributions of the soloists (mainly Corea and guitarist Bill Conners) were woven into roiling, syncopated rhythms. Though later RTF albums (particularly those with guitarist Al DiMeola) saw the group concentrate on motifs that tested the limits of technical mastery, this group was more notable for its sheer energy level, high-speed-shuttle grooves and furious, crackling interplay.

    Jeff Beck
    Blow By Blow (Epic, 1975)
Of all the rock guitarists who ventured into the fusion trench, Jeff Beck looms as one of the most articulate, a rare riff-master who can navigate unusual harmonic structures and tricky, sidewinding lines and still come up with music that speaks with the emotional knife-edge of rock. On the craft Blow By Blow - most notably, perhaps the ebullient stone-cold classic shuffle "TocarFreeway Jam"-Beck employs expansive, fluid lines to soar above high-stepping funk and slippery rock.

    Mahavishnu Orchestra
The Inner Mounting Flame (Columbia, 1971)
This first effort from the Mahavishnu Orchestra opens with a hefty, rafters-rattling chord, the kind of thing you would expect to hear at the end of an emotionally exhausting piece of orchestral music. From that gathering point, guitarist McLaughlin and his crew (vioinist Jerry Goodman, keyboardist Jan Hammer, bassist Rick Laird and drummer Billy Cobham) embark on a feverish uptempo excursion called "TocarMeeting Of The Spirits," tossing hot-wired melodies back and forth as though their characters were being tested with every note. All of The Inner Mounting Flame burns at that intensity level; even a contemplative ballad like "TocarDawn" is spiced with a mid-section full of unexpected hairpin turns. And when John McLaughlin launches a more rock-oriented trip, like the percolating "Noonward Race," it's as though he's channeling all the great guitar playing he'd heard in recent years - Hendrix' fury, Santana's elegance - into a brilliantly agitated summation. Flame and its follow-up, Birds of Fire, are both excellent examples of technical mastery in the service of ambitious, relentlessly imaginative music.

John Mclaughlin, Al Dimeola, Paco Delucia
Friday Night in San Francisco (Columbia, 1981)
There was no shortage of fusion supergroups in the late Seventies and early Eighties; only a shortage of interesting ones. The acoustic guitar setting of Friday Night proved perfect for this trio, which reunited for a studio set in 1983, "Passion, Grace and Fire". Both offer pleasurable romps, though the trio's flamenco reworkings are significantly hotter on the performance disc, and there's more live-wire suspense in the exchanges.

    Pat Metheny Group
    Pat Metheny Group (ECM, 1978)
Most fusion stomps around with a heavy foot. Pat Metheny floats. This Midwestern guitar prodigy borrowed elements from many fusion pioneers-Corea's needlepoint melodies, McLaughlin's ecstatic peak-seeking, Wes Montgomery's rounded mellow tone- then whipped them into a light, pastel-hued approach to rhythm that was revolutionary for its subtlety.

    Billy Cobham
    Spectrum (Atlantic, 1973)
By the time he made his solo debut in '73, drummer Billy Cobham had done time with Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and was seeking a hybrid of jazz and rock with a more assertive rhythmic foundation- fusion that followed a tighter script. With this charged album, he got it. Though there are two stylized, heavily arranged tracks featuring guitarist John Tropea and a horn section with saxophonist Joe Farrell, the highlights come from the band with guitarist Tommy Bolin and keyboardist Jan Hammer, two technically accomplished musicians who understand the power of repetition and the way to make rock rhythms sizzle. This rhythm section tore through muscular melodies and disciplined solo bursts, and was particularly keen on developing episodes of scrappy, high-intensity crossfire like those on "TocarRed Baron" and "Taurian Matador."

    Sonny Sharrock
    Guitar (Enemy, 1986)
The late Sonny Sharrock played with Miles Davis just after Bitches Brew, in the band with McLaughlin and Cobham that yielded the funk-tinged Jack Johnson. After that, he essentially disappeared until the Eighties, when he surfaced in Bill Laswell's genre-hopping Materialand Last Exit and began a solo career with this exhaustive, wide-ranging statement. Though he's not considered exclusively a "fusion" guitarist, his approach was marked by an inquisitiveness that aligns him with the genre's masters. On this album, for example, he experiments with slide guitar, offers a tone-poem reverie and a mournful, pondering blues, and veers from crisp, single-note lines to abrasive chordal gales that dance right along the edge of distortion and feedback, yet never lose their sense of musicality.
