After the opening steel drum melody--which is actually played on a synthesizer?--it's hard not to despair of a world in which this wasn't a hit. Let's concede the cruel vagaries of public taste and the market that serves it, and let's even concede the lamentable fact that the public's taste aren't our own. Even so, world-beating hits tend to have a certain je ne sais quoi--something we recognize whether or not we care for the song in question. Whatever that something is--a certain catchiness? a certain immediacy of pleasure?--it's all over this track. Combine that with the fact this is a love song with a catchy chorus and a battery of lovely sounds (the steel drums, backing vocals, and synth textures), and it's unclear why this didn't achieve commercial success. OK, the verses are obscure (Is the main character drifting off to sleep? Or drowning?), but hits are often misunderstood. Pop appeals to us with its sounds, not its lyrical content--and the sounds here are breathtaking.
