    The Village Of The ‘60’s

November 3, 2009 SANTA MONICA, CA: 429 Records has brought together a stellar roster of artist for a project titled “THE VILLAGE: A CELEBRATION OF THE MUSIC OF GREENWICH VILLAGE”—a musical homage to an influential scene that thrived during an incomparable era in the history of rock music. The Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City in the 1960’s was ground zero for a musical, political and social evolution-- McCarthy and the Red Scare era was over, the Vietnam War was simmering and poised to explode, and the civil rights movement was gaining steam just as singers like Peter Seeger, Bob Dylan and Odetta were hanging out and composing fierce and fearless songs that reflected the social conscience of a generation. The neighborhood was symbolic of a shared inspiration with artists worldwide gravitating to the vibrant streets and clubs and as such helped change the course of popular music. With THE VILLAGE, modern day artists look back and pay tribute to the artists and songs that helped nurture and shape them as successful musicians in their own right. Shelby Lynne gives a musical shout out to Dylan with her version of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” John Oates pays tribute to an important era in his own musical development with a heartfelt rendition of “He Was A Friend of Mine,” Cowboy Junkies perform their heartbreaking version of Tim Buckley’s “Once I Was” and Bruce Hornsby checks in with a stunning version of The Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Darlin’ Be Home Soon.” THE VILLAGE: A CELEBRATION OF THE MUSIC OF GREENWICH VILLAGE will be released worldwide today on 429 Records.

Says Michael Ragogna in The Huffington Post: “It takes The Village! The artists who contributed their works to The Village celebrated some of that period’s anthems by giving them renewed significance through their loving interpretations.”

    THE VILLAGE artists and songs:
    1) Rickie Lee Jones “Subterranean Homesick Blues”
    2) The Duhks “It’s Alright Ma, I’m Only Bleeding”
    3) Lucinda Williams “Positively 4th Street”
    4) Sixpence None The Richer “Wayfaring Stranger”
    5) John Oates “He Was A Friend Of Mine”
    6) Los Lobos “Guantanamera”
    7) Mary Chapin Carpenter “Violets Of Dawn”
    8) Bruce Hornsby “Darlin’ Be Home Soon”
    9) Amos Lee “Little Bit Of Rain”
    10) Shelby Lynne “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”
    11) Cowboy Junkie “Once I Was”
    12) Rachael Yamagata “Both Sides Now”
    13) Rocco DeLuca “The Ballad Of Hollis Brown”

THE VILLAGE is available today on 429 Records and be distributed by Fontana in the U.S. and E1 (formerly Koch) in Canada. The European release will also be on November 3 via SLG’s agreement with Proper Music Distribution and the Australian release via Universal will take place on October 30th. A comprehensive press, radio, viral and traditional marketing and retail advertising campaign will be launched in each of the key international territories.

429 Records is a unit of the Savoy Label Group (SLG). SLG is the North American unit of CME (Columbia Music Entertainment, formerly Nippon Columbia), the oldest music company in Japan. The Savoy Label Group has evolved into a leading independent company consistently outperforming competitors in key music categories as monitored by Billboard Magazine. • 50 Questions about my Top 50: 2009 Version

    Nov 2 2009, 23h13 por melbo

Because it's been almost two years since I filled this out...I thought it would be fun to see how this has changed.

    1. How did you get into 29? (Martina Sorbara)
My friend Christina loved her first. She has excellent taste in music, so I looked her up.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Clay Aiken)
Haha...umm...I guess something he sang on American Idol? I don't remember whether I watched the auditions that season or picked up the show later.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Chris Isaak)
No idea. I don't really pay attention to his lyrics...more his music and his voice.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49? (Spice Girls)
Haha, I guess I prefer Spice World?

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Mariah Carey)
    Five.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (Billy Joel)
First, how is Billy only #50?! That's disturbing. I love so many of his songs (so many!!), but if I have to pick just one, I always go with TocarThe Longest Time. I was so disappointed that he didn't sing it at Wrigley Field last summer.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Sarah McLachlan)
Mm, yes. TocarWintersong. It's such a beautiful type of sad, though.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Andrea Bocelli)
Vivo Per Lei (con Giorgia), unless it's Olympic time. Then it's Because We Believe.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Vienna Teng)
    TocarHarbor, TocarWhatever You Want, TocarAntebellum.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (The Beatles)
There are probably a hundred. I mean, really, does their discography ever end? All You Need Is Love would be the most obvious.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? (Shania Twain)
Come On Over. Seriously, weren't the majority of the songs on that album released to great success?

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Jack Johnson)
    TocarBetter Together!

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Laura Pausini)
I discovered her through a fantastic lady that I used to work for. She passed away a few years ago, but listening to Laura always makes me think of her.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (Michael Jackson)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. I think.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Backstreet Boys)
BSB makes me so nostalgic. Specifically, I guess I'll go with TocarAs Long As You Love Me

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Madonna)
None. I'm sure that would be a great show, though!

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Destiny's Child)
I don't know what the first song I heard would have been, but the first one that I liked was probably TocarBills, Bills, Bills.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (John Mayer)
    Continuum! Easily.

    19. What is your favorite song by 1? (Emm Gryner)
So far, this is the only ranking that hasn't changed since the last time I did this survey, and the answer hasn't changed either. My favourite Emm song is still Blackwinged Bird

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Rascal Flatts)
No! I would love to, but I don't have any local friends who like them.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Rachael Yamagata)
Her songs make me think of many fabulous road trips with Jules.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Sara Bareilles)
    TocarGravity. So. Incredible.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Astor Piazzolla)
I have no idea. Since I'm a skating fan, TocarLibertango is a safe bet!

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Diana Krall)
The Girl In The Other Room

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Regina Spektor)
    TocarHotel Song or TocarSamson

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Alicia Keys)
    I'm sure it was TocarFallin'

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Chantal Kreviazuk)
Here's another one that hasn't changed! But the answer might...the verdict is still out. What If It All Means Something has been my favourite, but her new one, Plain Jane is gaining ground. We'll see.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? (Céline Dion)
Céline is still #2. And TocarS'il Suffisait D'Aimer is still my favourite. Although there are SO MANY.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Sarah Slean)
TocarMy Invitation, and I didn't really like it, so I didn't listen to her for a long time. I'm still not crazy about that song, but I do love her.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8? (Kelly Clarkson)
I can't believe she's ranked so high, first of all. I don't feel like I listen to her that often. Maybe because it takes me so many listens to decide whether or not I like her songs, haha. I guess my favourite is TocarSince U Been Gone. Does that make me shallow?

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Keith Urban)
    I haven't.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Chicago)
    TocarJust You 'N' Me

    33. What is you favorite album by 12? (Superchick)
    Beauty from Pain

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Coldplay)
I don't think there's any that make me groan.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Daniel Bedingfield)
    TocarJames Dean (I Wanna Know)

    36. What is your favorite album by 48? (Blue Rodeo)
I definitely haven't heard all their albums, but I have The Days in Between and I like it.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (U2)
I haven't ever, although I'm sure it's a great show. I'm not sure I would shell out the cash for it, though.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? (Bryan Adams)
    Seriously? Obviously TocarSummer Of '69

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (Jamie Cullum)
I'm going to go with These Are The Days, because that's the first track on Twentysomething. I was with a friend when she bought it and we listened to it on the way home from Windsor.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? (Michael Bublé)
    It's Time

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? (98 Degrees)
    I still love TocarStill.

I'd just make a playlist for this, but that'd require me to go through each track individually and that's way too much work, since I just added albums to it. I think I'll try to keep this updated over the month since the story keeps changing on me.

  • Three years of Last FM

    Out 18 2009, 14h00 por yourcrowbar

Wow, it's been three years since I joined Last FM. On every birthday, I write a journal entry about my top 50 artists at the time. Now it's time again - to compare my charts from 365 days ago it to my current top 50. The first number is their current position, and the second number is the position in my charts one year ago.

    4 (2) The Smashing Pumpkins

    20 (17) Björk
    21 (15) Arcade Fire
    22 (14) Portishead
    23 (13) Laura Veirs
    24 (12) The National
    25 (-) Emilíana Torrini
    26 (16) Vanessa da Mata
    27 (26) Shelby Lynne
    28 (-) Regina Spektor
    29 (27) The Long Blondes
    30 (22) Joni Mitchell
    31 (-) Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    32 (29) Shannon Wright

    36 (37) Fiona Apple
    37 (32) Sonic Youth
    38 (25) Interpol
    39 (43) Britney Spears
    40 (33) Suzanne Vega
    41 (31) Kelis
    42 (-) Ray LaMontagne
    43 (41) Natalie Merchant
    44 (-) The xx
45 (42) Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton
    46 (-) CéU
    47 (-) Ladyhawke
    48 (34) Kate Nash
    49 (-) Phoenix
    50 (44) Sleater-Kinney

Nine new artists entered the top 50 - again, a decent amount; with more time, the charts tend to become established (see how the top 10 hasn't changed). It's kinda hard for me to listen to a new artist so heavily that it's capable to enter the top 50. Some of the "new" artists, of course, are not new to me; they just got benefited from releasing great albums since October 18th, 2008 - likeRegina Spektor and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
The highest entry though, Emilíana Torrini, was heavily played because she was my favourite act at this year's Glastonbury - I played Me and Armini non-stop.

There are some new-to-me artists though, such as The xx and CéU - owners probably of my two favourite albums of 2009. Even an artist as veteran as Vashti Bunyan managed to enter the top 50 - courtesy of my friend William (speaking of him: Web Sheldon, you're almost on my top 10! When is that EP coming out?).

As for the top tracks, it's interesting to notice how every new Gemma Hayes release always grabs my attention: there are 7 Gemma songs on my top 50 - at least one from each album, one from the 2009 Oliver EP and at least one B-side. You go, girl.

  • How eclectic are your music tastes?!

    Out 14 2009, 22h54 por enlathestrange

First, make a list of your top-20 artists overall. Then, for each of these artists, add the 8 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, count up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 9 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 160 represents an extremely varied one.
