  • I'm Changing Tags!

    Ago 24 2009, 11h43 por GrantRS

I shouldn't really be journaling today - I shouldn't really be on last.fm today at all. I've got important things to do, but I guess I'm avoiding anything resembling work for a few minutes.

We've all come across the dilemma of shared artist pages. last.fm aren't going to fix it or they would have done it ages ago. If the artist you listen to is the most popular one on a page by far, it's not a problem for you, but when it's a close run race or your artist is swamped by fans of another identically named artist, there's nothing you can do except change tags, so this is what I'm doing with quite a few of the artists in my library.

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal seems to suffer heavily from this. Admittedly there were a number of lesser known bands whose names were easy to steal, but it seems only the handful of most succesful bands from the genre are immune to name theft.

Possibly the easiest one to look at is Avenger. There are a lot of bands called Avenger, including notably the German artist currently known as Rage. The NWOBHM band are now calling themselves Avenger UK*, so it's fairly easy to decide where to retag your files to if you don't want to share one of the most overcrowded artist pages on the ite.

*Although actually there's controversy and uncertainty around that given that ex-bassist Mick Moore claims the copyright on the name Avenger and there may or may not be legal action in progress at the moment to stop the rest of the band using the name Avenger or any slight deviation on it. If Moore owns the name though why doesn't he sue the trance act, the Czech band, the Canadian band and the Brazilian band as well?

So I've retagged my Avenger tracks to Avenger UK. That's working out fairly smoothly so far. Obviously there's the downside that I've had to upload images and artwork myself to last.fm and I've also now got two entries for the band on my profile. However, it's working out fairly smoothly. This still seems to be an improvement, so what else can I change?

Sticking with NWOBHM bands, Fist and Shiva both share their pages with solo artists who have assumed their names as aliases and apparently amassed larger fanbases allowing them monopoly over the artist image voting system and corrupting statistics of the nationality of music in my library. The thing is though, neither of these bands are active at the moment so neither have changed their names for the purpose of distinguishing themselves from name-theives. I opted to change my Shiva tags to Shiva UK, in line with my Avenger UK tags, but it still sits wrong with me, so when I decided to change my Fist tags I instead opted for NWOBHM Fist and, in the process, ruined any note of consistency in my retagging, but I'm slightly happier with the rebranding to "NWOBHM [Artist Name]" than "[Artist Name] UK". In both cases retagging has caused me to lose a playcount of 70-odd, so I'm less than satisfied with the changeover, but I'm still in favour of separating artists out and would like a general concensus on how to modify tags uniformly if I can get anyone to read and respond to this.

Tank has three artists all with roughly equal shares of listeners as well as numerous other smaller artists. So far the NWOBHM band has managed to hold on to image voting dominance, but similar artists is increasingly favouring the Korean artist and last.fm radio will play the American "R&B" singer. At first I opted for the retagging of Tank (UK) as two other users had already done so before me, but the brackets look ugly and the modification is inconsistent with Avenger UK (the closest we have to an official way to modify artist names I think). So, even though it means losing another 20-odd plays, I'm now switching to Algy Ward's Tank named after the only permanent member of the band. In this case, I prefer this tag to the nationality suffix or the genre prefix I've used for other artists as it looks as though it could be a deliberate part of the name (see Tobias Sammet's Avantasia, Jon Oliva's Pain as comparisons). Yes, okay, it doesn't say "Algy Ward's Tank" on any of the covers, but it doesn't say "Tank (UK)" on any of the covers either and there's little to stop another band from the UK calling themselves Tank so that's what I'm going to call Tank from now on: Algy Ward's Tank.

Raven is another one that shares a page. The biggest competition for control of the page is from the supporters of a German R.A.C. and right wing band to whom the name probably doesn't hold any meaning whatsoever - not the most desirable group to share a page with, I'd imagine. I haven't changed my tags on Raven because I have a big 130 plays to the tag and hope that in the long run loyal fans of the original band to take the name Raven will win out. If I was to re-tag though what should I go for? "Raven UK" doesn't look ideal as there's already multiple UK bands called Raven. Both John and Mark Gallagher have been in Raven since the beginning so there's no sense to prefixing it with either of their names, especially when taking into consideration the long-serving nature of current drummer Joe Hasselvander. A more specific region like Raven (Newcastle) is getting to be a bit silly. Perhaps another NWOBHM-prefix to make that NWOBHM Raven?

The NWOBHM is not the only area affected by sharing names though. Alarmingly the Jeff Martin page is split three ways. You would have thought one or two could have used a middle initial in their name or spelled their names differently; Geoff, Jef, Jefff, Marten, are some suggestions off the top of my head. Me being a fan of Racer X, I'm of course interested in the American Jeff Martin - who I've now scrobbled under the names Jeff Martin, Jeff Martin (Racer X) and Jeff Motorman Martin. The first is the correct spelling, but a shared page, the second just instinctively looks wrong as Jeff has played with so many different bands it seems silly to tie him to just the one he's best known for, the third is what I'm currently sticking with but may take some explanation. Jeff Martin is an avid motorcycle enthusiast, an early Racer X song Motor Man was an acknowledgement of this. Later after the band's 90s hiatus they did an album called Superheroes and for the sleeve all created a 'superhero' alias, Jeff's being "Motorman". Finally, Jeff himself uses the Motorman nickname in his myspace url, presumably having found that one of the other Jeff Martins must have beat him to the most immediately obvious url.

So, the purpose of this journal is two-fold. One: I'd like to try and get some opinions what we should tag as what from other fans. It'd be good to persuade people to join my stances, but it'd just be good to get a concensus anywhere whether it's with my tags or against them. Two: To provide a refernce table below of what my alternate tags so far are.

    Avenger -> Avenger UK
    Shiva -> Shiva UK
    Fist -> NWOBHM Fist
    Tank -> Algy Ward's Tank
Jeff Martin -> Jeff Motorman Martin

  • IMO Song and Album of the Year 1967-2006 (Warning: bias toward metal and prog)

    Jul 24 2009, 14h32 por GrantRS

Below I have chosen a favourite album and favourite song from 40 separate years ('67-'06). This is just my opinion and based on the music I've actually heard. The favourite track does not have to come from the year's corresponding favourite album. In cases where the track does happen to come from the year's favourite album it is usually either an indicator of a weak year (1993) or an incredibly strong album (1982). However, I do tend to change my mind quite a bit, so I may return to this journal to update my preferences, particularly when I discover new albums and new tracks to love. In most cases the decision was incredibly close with many runners up in extremely close contention

    60s:

    1967:
Album: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love
Song: The Who - TocarI Can See For Miles
    1968:
Album: Cream - Wheels Of Fire
    Song: Cream - TocarWhite Room
    1969:

This week i've slotted out a couple of NWOBHM reviews, and a couple heavy ones for good measure. first up is Streetfighter 's Crazy Dream (EP), a NWOBHM offering let down with a lame title track. Up next is Welsh NWOBHMers Y Diawled's first single . Another NWOBHM review is for Stormtrooper's Pride Before a Fall single - an early (1980) release showing professionalism and promise. Next up is Glam/NWOBHM act Touched's 2nd album - Deathrow - a rather poor follow up to their decent debut. The last NWOBHMer is the excellent Tysondog single Eat The Rich. My final review was for US power/heavy metal band Wyzard.

to read any of the reviews, simply type Deathriderdoom into the search bar on http://www.metal-archives.com/ , and then select "User" from the drop down menu. avaiable will be all the reviews listed in my previous journal entry. Hope they are of use or enjoyable, and remember to get writing yourself! Heavy Metal Thunder

Newest approved album reviews as of 17/06/09

Hi there folks, just a quick update of my newest reviews up on MA. My two newest include Welsh NWOBHMers Stormqueen's 1980 debut demo - released independently the same year as NWOBHM juggernauts Angel Witch Iron Maiden and Def Leppard released their debuts. A killer NWOBHM offering, somewhat simlar to Angel Witch's sound. The second one is for little known AOR/NWOBHM act Clientelle's 1985 demo. These guys were a unique sounding NWOBHM act out of Hatfield, Hertfordshire, who were unable to achieve much succes, with their only full-length failing to get them much attention, in the at the time overflowing NWOBHM market. This demo was their last attempt at securing a record deal, but sadly was unsuccessful. Anyway, hope the reviews are helpful, and as always, you can post feedback about em here i guess. NWOBHM forever.

    Couple of my Latest Reviews

Today i have i couple more for ya. A review of US metal band Ded Engine's 1983 debut single. These guys sound similar to an early Armored Saint, though not as good. a grimy, but rather dull offering. Next up is a review for two tracks from Krokus' most AC/DC sounding album yet - One Vice at a Time from the single Long Stick Goes Boom a strong, yet overly ACDC sounding outing. The final one is an depth look at The follow-up album to Krokus' landmark 1983 offering Headhunter, the album The Blitz, released in 1984. This album marks a departure from the heavy, speed metal approach taken on Headhunter, to more of a pop-orientated sound - incredibly polished and well written album. Last up is a review for the legendary Jack Starr's 80's melodic heavy metal act Burning Starr. The album in question is their solid, and Scorpionsesque debut Rock The American Way. well worth a listen if you're into the melodic stuff.

well, hope you give em a read, and perhaps even get inspired to write your own. and long live heavy metal!

More NWOBHM reviews - get some new bands!

Dragster, not to be confuse with the gay punk, and pop rock acts of the same name, were an unknown NWOBHM act that took the same approach to the genre as bands like Saxon, with heavy sounding guitars and drums, mixed with a focus on catchy and melodic choruses. Their best of album was issued in 1999 and contains all of their known material - a good choice if you like finding new NWOBHM acts. the review is available on their page on www.www.metal-archives.com

Legendary British speed metallers Tröjan releases a string of demos, which finally resulted in a full-length official offering in 1985. The album Chasing The Storm is an excllent blend of NWOBHM chorus focused melodies, and thrilling speed metal aggression. This one is often regarded as a hidden gem of mid 80's metal. check out the review, which should be up shortly - at http://www.metal-archives.com and remember - metal will never die!

    Newest reviews:

Riot is a legendary and pioneering early metal band. They evolved from one of the hardest, fastest bands of the 70's into speed/power metal gods in the 1980s. Often revered for their 1987 albumThundersteel this band had a string of great earlier works. no better sampling of their earlier work is available than their 1982 single "Outlaw". Check it out and youll be hooked. Review is up on metal-archives.

Rhabstallion has to be the most awesome completely unknown NWOBHM act ever. a review of their excellent 1994 re-release of 80's material is up on MA. Amazing album. Another NWOBHM review this week is on Savage's single "Ain't No Fit Place" - two cuts from their legendary and critically acclaimed Loose 'n' Lethal. Great, heavy NWOBHM

On another note; Tyga Myra was another Brtish speed metal band. They formed during end of the NWOBHM period and released only one full-length. A review is available on MA

This Weeks Album Reviews, Let's Go

i've been meaning to review London's More for a while. Catchy tunes here from the debut album of one of the "more" succesful NWOBHM acts (for a period). More were snapped up by Atlantic Records - and it shows with this interesting blend of poppy melody, and heaviness. Warhead is a fun, recommendable NWOBHM outing.

In additon, i've also taken the time to review W.A.S.P.'s classic VHS offering "Videos...In the Raw" - an excellent, and totally fun collection of interviews, clips and live footage released in the late 80's. check it out.

Saracen is an amazing unique nwobhm band which combines elements of 70's early heavy metal and doom, progressive rock like Pink Floyd and other influences to craft en epic, power metallic tinged nwobhm/rock sound. their debut album is a masterpiece. check out the review on http://www.metal-archives.com/ for more!

a couple more for you NWOBHM fans:

Jaguar is a melodic rock/NWOBHM band with some similarity to American 80's AOR acts like Night Rangerconey hatch etc. their 2nd album is awesome if you like AOR - well written, besting many bands that attempted the style.

Legendary NWOBHMers Tokyo Blade are still regarded as one of the best NWOBHM acts ever to appear in the 80's. Their breakthrough single Powergame hailed them in as one of the most energetic, guitar driven bands of the time. If you like Iron Maidenish riffage in your NWOBHM - check out their early works.

Maxx Warrior were an unknown heavy/glam metal band active in the mid 80's. Their only release to date -a self titled EP (1986) is an awesome blend of fast enbergetic mid 80's metal and early 80's Motely Crue/LA Glam sound. Think Shout at the Devil, or Too Fast For Love.

geez, i haven't updated this in a wee while, but hewre goes: Saxon's offerings after their early 80's hayday, but before their awesome resurgence post-2000 are often overlooked. we must remember though, that Saxon is an unstoppable juggernaut that will not relent. During their middle period, they continued to put out quality. 1992's Forever Free is a solid offering with an awesome title track. the review is available on http://www.metal-archives.com/

Damascus was the name of 2 NWOBHM bands. the one from Liverpool released a nice little EP in 1984 titled Open Your Eyes. This EP was rich in 70's influences like Thin Lizzy, Uriah Heep etc, and centred around a very strong, driving title track. a NWOBHM outing worth a listen.

This week i also have a series of reviews up for obscure NWOBHM singles. These include offerings from bands such as Driveshaft, china doll, Demon Pact and others. Check these out if you're after some more classic NWOBHM.

Gaskin were a softer edged, rock band that were part of the NWOBHM in the early/mid 80's. Ive had their release No Way Out for quite some time and decided to get a review up. Their sound is an interesting mix of classic NWOBHM, with a Whitesnake sorta feel at times.

    This Week's Reviews-----

To kick things off this week, we head to Wales, where NWOBHM act Tredegar hailed from. Though they only released one full length, they aslo recorded another, which was unreleased (1991). Their 1994 best of disc includes both full-lengths and all recorded materials. read the review on the band's page at http://www.metal-archives.com/

Exises were a dutch heavy/progressive metal band formed in 1984. Their self titled release came out in 1987. It has a sound with some similarity to M.A.R.S., Leatherwolf, or classic Queensryche - though perhaps not quite as arresting as the aforementioned bands.

Roxcity, the shortlived Canadian AOR band released only one EP before dismantling. It has a sound with elements similar to Boston,Coney Hatch,Night Ranger at times, though not as majestic and powerful as these acts. howeve, the EP is worth a listen, if only for the track, "Night Child in the Sky"

Keep an eye out for more extremely obscure NWOBHM single reviews continuing my growing series in this vein. next up will be a review of the band Cryer, which later changed their name to Force(UK). Find the reviews on http://www.metal-archives.com/

I have also done breif, simple review of Kuni's debut album Masque - a powerful album that matches the virtousic skill of Kuni (he's similar to a Japanese Vinnie Moore,Paul Gilbert or Micheal Angelo Batio) with a sound that sometimes approaches Zar,DokkenRacer X, or even Riot. a great debut album really worth checking out if you like 80's melodic heavy metal.

Presence was a melodic heavy metal/hard rock band from France in the 1980's. Their only album was Rock Your Life. An interesting sound is evidenced; pieces of Danger Danger,Night Ranger,Dokken,Fisc and others could be found in their sound for comparison. The review can be found on the bands page on http://www.metal-archives.com/

This Weeks Reviews 6 July 2009

My first review for this week is a quick despcriptive write up of Spanish band Panzer's sophomore album. This early/mid 80's offering sounds very much steeped in NWOBHM, with many of the classic Spanish elements added into the mix. A decent bands that holds its own aongside Ñu and Barón Rojo.

This Weeks Reviews 13 July 2009

Colombian 80's rockers Carbure and titans of powerthrash Fatal Violence, with their excellent Best Of album.

I have finally got round to writing a review of NWOBHM/Prog rockers Saracen's sophomore full length album, titled Change Of Heart. In this album they shorten the songs a bit, but still deliver a strong mix of various influences and brilliant song writing. The review is available on metal archives.

    November, 2009

My latest review is a quick, shoddy description of epic Canadian power metal band Icewind's only full length offering. it can be found on the band's page on MA

  • ...Is this the truth???

    Fev 6 2009, 1h09 por Petatero

We all question ourselves about our own existence and its purpose.
Fear is what ignorance is made of, and I’m surely not afraid of dying but I really want to know why I’m here before that happens. And to be honest I would rather die suffering the most terrible pains than to just fade out while I sleep.

Some people shut down this way of thinking by simply believing in something that supposedly offers them all the answers, which are never really answered. And that something we call religion

What is the real purpose of religion?
It is supposed to help people curb their lower nature; man transiting from the animal to the human specie, has so much of the lower nature ingrained in him.
As a human being, you have the technology of mind, senses, intellect, and self awareness; all this equipment is supposed to help you to accelerate your evolution. Being steeped in lower nature, humans just create more problems and degradation in the world; they create imbalance, destroying the rest of humanity.
Religion was formulated to help man rise above and subdue the lower nature through fear and superstition. In this way, society will be of higher quality and we will be better human beings. This will help to create a better world. That should be the purpose of religion.
But the more I study history, the more I see that religion has been the source and the cause for most of the conflicts in the world; most of the wars and atrocities In the world were in the name of religion. That makes one wonder what is the real purpose of religion.

Religion creates so much hatred and fanaticism, causing people to lose all sense of humanity, where instead, the real purpose of religion is to make people more loving, tolerant and kind.

Throughout the world people are being exploited in the name of God.
Religious leaders use that fear of God and their power to control people, keeping them in bondage and superstition.

When you control people’s mind and keep them in ignorance and darkness that is the greatest violence.

When people are enslaved physically, they still have freedom of mind, as expressed by Jean-Paul Sartre in The Flies referring to freedom as a state of mind. Having spent some time in prison camp, he knew quite a bit. And his point about freedom is worth considering. In his philosophical view of existentialism, being free mostly has to do with knowing that you are free.
So even if you are imprisoned you are allowed a freedom of mind, of morality, of belief, and of self, even if physically confined.
But when you take away the freedom of mind and instill fear and superstition in people’s minds, then they would be degrading their consciousness. ENSLAVING YOUR MIND

People are enslaved anyhow all the time in the pursuit of wealth and pleasure, trying to satisfy their greed.

The Dilemma of Desire developed by Arthur Schopenhauer explains Life as an expression of the will is basically goal-oriented. We are always seeking something. This is true of all life, but most of all of the higher conscious animals. So long as we seek our goal, we are not satisfied and the unfulfilled desire drives us forward. If we do not satisfy the desire, then we remain unfulfilled. But if we do satisfy the desire and win the goal, then we have no more motivation and life has basically come to an end. Thus, life is motion towards a goal. If we do not get the goal, then we remain dissatisfied. If we do get the goal, then the life-force ceases. Either way, the fulfillment of desire is impossible. We cannot have a fully fulfilled life and enjoy it too.

If reality is the blind will to live, and the world is the objectivity of such a blind will, life is painful misery. To desire signifies suffering distress on account of the lack of what is desired. If the desire is not satisfied, the distress remains and increases; if it is satisfied, satiety and annoyance follow, and this in turn causes new desires and new distresses. ENSLAVING YOUR MIND

Well, if this has not cheered you up let me tell you we shall do best to think of life ...as a process of disillusionment: since this is, clearly enough, what everything that happens to us is calculated to produce.
This may sound harsh but it opens a whole new world of ideas and possibilities, i will try to make it plain and simple for you all to understand. If you really want to enjoy life see the glass totally empty, that way you will never get disappointed.

This all sums up in this phrase left by writer Isaac Asimov:
"Whatever the tortures of hell, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse."
Our minds are in control. Instead of the mind being the tool, we are the tool.

The vast majority of the population is unaware that they are slaves to their own minds and emotions.....which is why there is so much suffering, addiction, dishonesty and etcetera in this world. In fact, it is the soul cause of all humanity's greatest woes.

We can never have a true sense fulfillment in our lives as long as our minds are either constantly in the past or in the future.

Only when we are able to separate ourselves from our minds constant analyzing and judging of everything can we grasp truth.

    ...Is this the truth?
And is the path to "enlightenment" learning how to observe and separate yourself from your mind and emotions?
    To live in the moment?
Is there any connection in this to the meaning of life?

Life is just a ride, Bill Hicks:
”The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: "Is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we kill those people.”

  • Possible solution to many artists with the same name problem?

    Dez 28 2008, 23h36 por SeedSnatcher

Now, my knowledge of coding is very basic, so bear with me if this is difficult.

For many artists with the same name, Last.fm could maintain multiple pages. One for each.
    Now, how to differentiate?
This will take effort from the community, but I was thinking that songs could be categorized under a disambiguation page until a bunch of people confirm which artist they're by.

For example, I listen to a song tagged Rain. Let's say this song hasn't been categorized yet. Then I could click it in my profile to go to a page labeled Rain (disambiguation). Then I would vote for which Rain said song is by. Let's say I pick 비. Well if a bunch of people agree, then in the future it will scrobble it under 비. For everyone.

It's probably not perfect, so please comment with your thoughts. And some way to suggest this to Last.fm staff. =P

And comment with other artists of this nature if you'd like. I'll add them to the list below.
