E-bow, I'll Take The Rain and Nightswimming are 3 of the best songs ever written. Hi-Fi is my fave album, followed by Reveal, Up and Around The Sun

I agree with jtrichey... World Leader Pretend is a masterpiece. I also adore Cuyahoga so so much.

E-bow the letter is a good song.

I've heard someone suggest that sidewinder sleeps tonite refers to a telephone that doesn't ring. The coiled up cable of a telephone resembles a snake. I don't know why it is important that the telephone is at rest - maybe some kind of love drama.

e-bow the letter is by far the most underrated. that song is easily top 2 or 3 REM in my book

  • xTomer

the album sleeve says tonite (i guess you are hinting at sidewinder). i suppose tonight would be the way it is written in both english and american. i don't know of any songs (except for proably rap artists with will u danc w/ i 2nite) where tonight is spelled tonite.

  • Stumpflower

Can someone explain to me why Tonight seems to be spelled T-O-N-I-T-E in like all music? Is it only in America that it is spelled with G-H or what?

World Leader Pretend and E-Bow The Letter are definitely worth a mention.

Does anyone actually know what The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite is about? God I love that song

New Adventures doesn't get the credit it deserves. It is their best, followed by Life's Rich Pageant, Green, and Around the Sun

E-Bow The Letter should be higher. best concert I've ever been to was R.E.M. in Hyde Park 2005. Amazing.

How come 3 of the bands I hate most - U2, Coldplay and Oasis - are thought to be 'similar' to one of my favourite bands?!

  • BigBlueJim

Saw them live twice, once for Monster, and once for Up. Great band, great shows, especially the Monster show. It was in Chicago, and Stipe called his parents at the end of the show.

bigcity: It's because the track gets tagged with and without the (And I Feel Fine) part, add the two together, it would, rightly, be higher :)

This band's headin' for the rock and roll hall of fame...adn they deserve it

Hello fans of R.E.M, I have a question about R.E.M. in combination with a television serie. Can anybody tell me in which serie the number Bang and Blame was the tune? It was about two women and somewhere i know that both names started with an A (A... & A...). It was Danish or Swedish... Regards and thanks for the help, Harold

In fact I couldn't even tell you how many albums there have been since New Adventures, let alone their names.

Murmur is definitely my favourite album. Every song is good, even if you can't hear a word Stipe sings.

  • veganfishcake

    WTF?

    janeiro 2007
  • owenboen

I'm surprised there isn't more love of Murmur on Last.fm. That was a quality album.

can we get a new avatar for this band? that pic is SOOOO- 1995!!! hehe

I agree with ChrThMn. Every album from Chronic Town (wow I was 6 when that album went on release) to Green are amazing...i havent one bad thing to say about them. Lifes Rich Pageant is poetry! Once Out of Time kicks in, the wheels start to fall off and the word mediocre is all I can say about them! Great band though!

The last Albums including Up Reveal and ATS are just great. They have a very simple and understandable Atmosphere. Up is - imo - a winter Album, with a great Michael Stipe. It ist a very strong album. Reveal is my summer album - you can hear it by lying in the sun and everything around you is void. ATS is a slow album with great songs. Only in the R.E.M katalog is ATS maybe the worst one

  • inspite

    yes, Up was super. Agree.

last 15 albums are absolutely great...they re getting better and better. for easy listening songs tune into U2, shiny happy people

    janeiro 2007
  • BigBlueJim

I agree with what the majority of people said here...I stopped buying there stuff adter New Adventures. Up started to get a little wierd, but I still love it. I think the band changed a lot between the two albums as well...I saw them in support of Monster, and was blown away by them. I then saw them for Up, and while a great show, it lacked the raw edge that the Monster tour had.

    janeiro 2007
  • ChrThMn

Everything from the Chronic Town EP up to New Adventures In Hi-Fi kick my ass. And their compilations, as well. The last three albums they've put out suck though. Especially Up.

A fantastic band, the lyrics are poetry

  • Johnny_D

echo: I think that last two albums have one of the most crappy production i have ever heard. For example on Around the sun imho isn't bad song, but that boring and simple production absolutely destroyed album.

    janeiro 2007
  • echo725

The production on Around The Sun was brutal, and about half the songs themselves were bad. The other half were pretty good when played live.

    janeiro 2007
  • Johnny_D

when i hear part of any song on reveal, it hurts. It sounds awful - really bad production (R.E.M. doin' electro?). Yes, some songs are ok (Imitation, Rain, Reno), but ... you know how it says one-eyed man is king in land of blind. I think that these songs would be really good if they had different sound.

Mmmm, Reveal. Pretty much perfection, that one. I really don't get the bad reputation it has.
