  • Survey - 3 Years Later

    Dez 23 2009, 7h06 por KitKat9

Did this same survey 3 years ago. Let's see where it's at now, shall we?
& There's still tons I'm forgetting, I'm sure of it.

    1. Which bands/artist do you own the most albums by?
    Korn & Beastie Boys

    2. What was the last song you listened to?
    Cibo Matto TocarSpoon

    3. What's in your CD player right now?
Hmm, many many different things. Today it was one I haven't listened to in ages - Nine Inch NailsThe Fragile . But lately it's also been various Primus , The Tragically Hip , Dance Mix '95 ...basically a lot of stuff on shuffle.

    4. What was the last show you attended?
Funnily enough it was Three Days Grace with The Used & Default last week. I'm not even really a fan of any of those bands enough to buy a ticket to see them. ESPECIALLY not The Used. I actually can't even stand *those* guys. I managed to get free tickets so I went, though I missed Default. But I will say Three Days Grace is very good live. Talented dudes. & The Used's band is good... too bad that Bert moron ruins everything with his shitty stage presence (or lack thereof) and shitty attitude, along with shitty idiotic one-liners.
Other shows this year so far were Mindless Self Indulgence , The Pack A.D. , Atmosphere , Grady , k-os , SNFU , The Watchmen , Stone Temple Pilots , Our Lady Peace , DL Incognito with D-Sisive (booked that show myself... whole other long ridiculous story to go with THAT one.) , The Tragically Hip , Left Spine Down (opened for them on 2 fall tour dates with Alectrona) Matthew Good , and lots of smaller shows. Also opened for Die Mannequin with The Alcohollys . Whoo, that was a mouth full.

    5. What was the greatest show you've ever been to?
Damn, I'd still have to say first Korn show, all 3 Beastie Boys shows, and Foo Fighters actually blew me *away*. Absolutely amazing live show, so much energy, Dave is one solar flare of a dude! OH SHIT WAIT! I must remember Oasis !! I saw them at this infamous show , including the "Noel gets shoved" part of it. Aside from that, it was an AMAZING show. First time I've seen Oasis and it kicked ass. This next one I want to note was People Under the Stairs . Good good good. Check em out if you haven't yet. Also Alanis Morissette as a notably good show. She can belt it out, I tells ya. Aaaaaand Slipknot back in April 2000. Intense.
WHOA! ONE MORE I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT! Weezer !!
I was so impressed by their show, saw them in September 2008 at the ACC in Toronto. Got front row on floor, and couldn't believe how into it Rivers actually was. I had a feeling he'd act burnt out or be a bit stand-offish, but he was very talkative with the crowd and he seemed genuinely happy to be on stage. Plus they played about a 2 hour set, maybe a bit longer. Very happy I got to see them. Very.

    6. What's the worst show you've ever been to?
Haha, it's hard to say.... that Alexisonfire show was still pretty bad. But I forgot about a Godhead show I saw way back in the day. I was up front and all I could smell was baby powder flying off their faces from them trying to look gothically white. As far as recently, The Used were pretty bad. Well, like I said, it was just Bert that was bad.

    7. What's the most musically involved you have ever been?
I still dunno what kind of answer is expected here... I guess it's open to interpretation. But for now I'll say I play instruments (solo and in bands) and I *would* infact most likely go literally insane if I didn't have music. People throw that sentence around a lot ("Oh I'd DIE without music!") but I don't think most of them really understand what that means. I'll leave it at that.

    8. What show are you looking forward to?
"Hmm, I'd love to see Beastie Boys again, but for now, it's The Tragically Hip and possibly Slayer." - haha, that was my answer 3 years ago.
It's still Beastie Boys and this time I have a ticket for Slayer with Megadeth and Testament. Sweet. I'm also looking forward to the New Years Eve show my band The Alcohollys is playing at Call The Office. No event made on LastFM for it yet, but here's the Facebook one for it.

    10. What is your favorite band shirt?
Haha, still too many to name. Even more now than last time, hah.

    11. What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?
Shit. WAY too many to name now.

    12. Who is one musician or group you wish would make a comeback?
"Not so much a comeback, but someone I would have liked to see back when they were kickin around originally would definately be The Beatles, The Verve, Pantera, Stone Temple Pilots, The Pharcyde (back in their old days), Rage Against the Machine ... tons more." - answer from 3 years ago.
Since then I've got to actually see Stone Temple Pilots , The Pharcyde , and Rage Against the Machine reunite! Drove 9 and a half hours for the Rage one to NYC. Was the Rock The Bells 2007 show. Fucking awesome. There's so many more comebacks and old bands I'd love to see still. I can't pin down just a few. Lunachicks would for sure be one.

    13. Who is one band/artist you've never seen live but always wanted to?
    Many more than one.
DJ Shadow, Radiohead, Pantera, Gang Starr, The Gandharvas, Rusty, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Daft Punk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beck.... soooooo many more. Soooooo many.

    14. Name a flawless album:

    Blue Album,
    OK Computer
    Korn
    Labcabincalifornia
I could only go on. - answers from 3 years ago again.
I'm still in agreeance with those indeed! But I also say basically all Beastie Boys albums (dunno how I forgot them the first time around here), Dj Dripp: Rinse Out - Volume 1 & 2, Homework, Mecca & The Soul Brother , The Main Ingredient ...it would take DAYS if I went on with the rest.

    15. How many music related videos/DVDs do you own?
    I've officially lost count.

    16. How many concerts/shows have you been to, total?
    I've OFFICIALLY lost count.

    17. Who have you seen the most live?
    Korn x 5
    Mindless Self Indulgence x 4
    Left Spine Down x 4
    DL Incognito x 4
    Beastie Boys x 3
    Deftones x 2
    Oasis x 2
    The Tragically Hip x 2
    SNFU x 2
    Three Days Grace x 2
    More more more, I know.

    18. What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
"Hm, no idea actually." - Same answer still.
I don't know a ton of soundtracks, so maybe the typical The Rocky Horror Picture Show - 21st Anniversary or trainspotting or Dazed And Confused.

    19. What was your last musical "phase" before you wisened up?
"I like too many things to fit in anywhere even if I tried." - Same answer.
    Aw yeeeeah.

    20. What's your "guilty pleasure" that you hate to admit liking?
    "There's nothing I won't admit!!" - Same answer again.
Even moreso than back then, I'd bet. ;)

  • The Jukebox Christmas Calendar

    Dez 1 2009, 10h07 por Hollow0ne

So it's the time of the year, when everyone is opening their christmas calendars. I decided to make a playlist which contains songs titled with only the number for each day 'til christmas eve. So on the 1st day I have a song called One, on 2nd day it's song titled Two and so on.

And to make things little more interesting I compiled this playlist using Spotify's search bar and adding songs from artists I have never heard before. Well, actually, I tried to find familiar artists, but because of the limitations to the song titles it was quite hard, so I had to pick up some totally unknown and some artists which I know only by name, but haven't heard any of their songs before.

I'll keep updating this journal each day as days go by and try to write some thoughts about each song. Remember that all these songs are available on Spotify, so if you like you can go and take a listen by yourself.

Okay, so the countdown to christmas starts and here are the songs for each day:

1.12. Korn - One (originally performed by Metallica), from the album Take a Look in the Mirror
Recorded live during MTV ICON: Metallica show, KoRn plays this Metallica classic. Pretty faithful to the original one, only shortened down to MTV standards. KoRn used/uses to play a bit of this during their own live shows.

2.12. Ill Niño - Two, from the album Confession
The first song on my "calendar" that I'm not familiar with. Strong nu-metal presence at the beginning, as yesterday I listened Korn and now this, hehe.
Pretty groovy and melodic song, not bad at all. I might take a closer look at this album later.

3.12. Massive Attack - Three, from the album Protection
Another unheard song. And well, to be honest I haven't missed much. Music is pretty atmospheric, but the female vocals are quite annoying. Artists like Tori Amos or even Björk could have made a song like this with better results. Judging by this song and some other singles I have heard from Massive Attack before, I won't be taking a closer look at them anywhere in the near future.

4.12. Miles Davis - Four, from the album Four
Jazz is one of the few genres that is kinda grey area to me. I appreciate the musicianship and skills of the jazz-musicians, but most of it is just a background "noise" for me. Elevator music. So was this Miles Davis song. When it comes to jazz, I prefer Richard Cheese, hehe.

5.12. Machine Head - Five, from the album The Burning Red
I've heard some tracks from Machine Head before and saw them live last summer. I like them. But this song ain't one of their strongest moments. It's not bad but it's not mindblowing either.

6.12. Chimaira - Six, from the album Resurrection
Intro fools you quite nicely and when the song actually kicks in, it takes a good turn to different approach. Pretty nicely done "math-metal", which at times takes a dive into the pool of cliches, but manages to keep things interesting enough that you'll listen to the whole song. Which is a good quality for a song that lasts almost 10 minutes. I don't like the sound of their singer, but besides that Chimaira sounds pretty good. At least this song.
Oh and happy independence day to my fellow finns!

7.12. Megadeth - Seven, from the album Risk
Ah, good old Dave Mustaine. Although this song is from their weakest album Risk, it's still pretty nice piece of rock 'n' roll. I specially like the ending of this song, when the mood slightly changes and gets this swingy-feeling. Mustaine still rocks even at his weakest.

8.12. Karma to Burn - Eight, from the album Karma to Burn
I've heard some Karma To Burn before, but didn't remember it was this good! Stoner-ish hard rock with kick ass groove. Me likes alot!

9.12. ¡Forward, Russia! - Nine, from the album Give Me a Wall
Now this is a total neverheard for me. The vocals annoy me from the very first second. Jesus Christ Almighty, what is this garbage?! Sounds like a bunch of random chords just whammed out of out-of-tune guitars and then some guy who hasn't reached puperty/mutation yet just screams something on top of it. Yuck, glad that's over with. This song has been the worst one to pop up on my countdown so far. Let's hope there are no bad surprises any more.

    10.12. Dept. - 10, from the album X
... Umm, ok. French version of Alexander Rybak? Atleast the singer sounds a bit like him. I honestly can't find anything positive or negative to say about this. I don't have any words at all. Well that I must say that I won't be returning to this album again.

11.12. Primus - Eleven, from the album Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Ahhh, the genius that is Les Claypool and his band Primus. This album is better/best(?) known for the hits Tommy the Cat and Jerry Was a Race Car Driver. This song sounds like insane waltz. Insane in a good way. That's why I love Claypool.

12.12. Twin Method - Twelve, from the album The Volume of Self
Sounds like Linkin Park without rapping and less machines. Not that bad, not that great either. Don't know, other songs might be better, gotta check them out sometime.

13.12. Johnny Cash - Thirteen (originally performed by Danzig), from the album American Recordings
I haven't heard either the original or Cash's version of this song, so after I listened the version by the man in black I had to take a listen of the original by the Morrison of metal. And I have to say that Cash nails this song just like he does with apparently all of his covers (my favourite being NIN song Hurt).

14.12. Hawk Nelson - 14, from the album Smile, It's The End Of The World
Neve heard of these guys before. But this song sounds nice. Pretty ballad, which gets a little repeatitive at the end.

15.12. Taylor Swift - Fifteen, from the album Fearless
Wow, is she really 20 years old? Such a great voice. The song is pretty decend, but I like her voice a lot. No matter what Kanye West says.

16.12. Iggy Pop - Sixteen, from the album Lust For Life
Ah, the legendary Iggy Pop. Nice tune, thou I like his later music more.

17.12. Sex Pistols - Seventeen, from the album Never Mind the Bollocks
Punk in general and specially Sex Pistols is something that I never really got into. I'm more into stuff like Misfits when it comes to that style. But Sex Pistols is still Sex Pistols and this was actually a pretty good song.

18.12. Dokken - Eighteen (originally performed by Alice Cooper, from the album For Those About To Röck
Pretty true to the original Cooper tune. Got to say that Cooper has more feeling in his vocals so I prefer the original one. Fine cover nevertheless.

19.12. Tegan and Sara - Nineteen, from the album The Con
Folk-rock duo, says Spotify's introduction. Sounds more like folk-punk to me. Reminds me of Melissa Auf Der Maur in a way. Not that bad, but not actually my "cup of tea".

20.12. Natalie Imbruglia - Twenty, from the album Come To Life
She does have a sweet voice, yes. And the song ain't that bad either. Background music.

21.12. Annihilator - 21, from the album King of the Kill
Annihilator is a well known name, but somehow I've managed to miss the whole band totally. But this song was good, gotta take a closer look at this album.

22.12. Millencolin - Twenty Two, from the album For Monkeys
Sounds like pretty generic high school punk to me. Heard this million times before. Yawn.

23.12. Jimmy Eat World - 23, from the soundtrack of One Tree Hill
Familiar name, not so familiar music. This song sounds kinda pretty, if they have more songs like this then I should take a closer look of this band.

    And the final song is...

24.12. Zacharius Carls Group - 24, from the album Rage In Your Heart
Intro sounds like TocarTribute. Too bad the rest of the song ain't as good. Still pretty nice song, with not so good lyrics. Nevertheless, I might take a closer look of this album sometime.

There ya have it, all 24 songs of my JukeBox Music Calendar. Happy Holidays!

  • Eclectic listening?

    Nov 29 2009, 10h50 por indiechick

First, make a list of your overall top-20 artists. Then, for each of these artists, add the 6 most similar artists to your list. Delete any duplicates, add up the number of entries on your list and this will give you some idea of how eclectic your listening habits are. A score of 6 represents an extremely unvaried musical taste while a 120 represents an extremely varied one.

No to jedziemy.

Puscifer to projekt, którego początki sięgają lat 90-tych.

Wymienić można by jeszcze m.in.:
    - Josh Eustis (Black Light Burns, Telefon Tel Aviv)
    - Lisa Germano
    - Lustmord
    - Tim Alexander (Primus, A Perfect Circle)
    - Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave)
    - Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Murderdolls)
    - Gil Sharone (Stolen Babies, The Dillinger Escape Plan)
    - i inni.

Został on wydany 2 października 2007 roku i spotkał się z umiarkowanym przyjęciem.

Pierwszy album Puscifer to ""V" Is For Vagina". Do tego dorzucić warto przypominające kazanie w rytmie gospel "TocarSour Grapes" i przepiękną balladę "Rev. 22:20 (dry martini mix)" a mieszanka wybuchowa gotowa.

Po ""V" is for Vagina" wydane zostało wydawnictwo z remiksami zatytułowane ""V" Is For Viagra - The Remixes" na którym znalazło się 13 remiksów utworów z poprzedniej płyty oraz z singla "Country Boner". Tytuł to ""D" Is For Dubby - The Lustmord Dub Mixes".

No cóż, wszystko ładnie i pięknie brzmi, świetnie wygląda i przede wszystkim doskonale bawi - bo jako support nierzadko występują komicy i kabarety.

Koncertowych doznań namiastkę można sprawdzić ściągając ostatnie z wydawnictw, czyli ""C" Is for (Please Insert Sophomoric Genitalia Reference HERE)" (uff, jaka długa ta nazwa). W drugim z tych utworów dano w pełni wykazać swoje wokalne umiejętności Milli Jovović, zresztą prawidłowo utwór powinien się nazywać "The Mission (M is for Milla Mix)".

No to kończymy w takim razie. Jakoś dobrnąłem, aczkolwiek ani to wyszło krótkie, ani zwięzłe. Więc trzymam kciuki, że chociaż na temat.

    Puscifer gorąco polecam do posłuchania!

    Pozdrawiam!

  • Top 1000 Albums (1970-2009) - Part I (2000-2009)

    Nov 23 2009, 12h42 por Funkafonik

Alright, as we near the end of this first Y2K decade, it's time to take a look back at all the best Albums that have been released in the last 40+ years.

I'll start off this extensive research with 2000, up until 2009. I'll then go back to 1980, all the way up to 1999, to then wrap things up with the 70s and before.

I'll be choosing my Top 25 Albums for each year; an ordered Top 10, and ~15 others worth mentioning. I'm also considering the live albums and EPs (~5), but they have their own section since songs on these have usually been released on official releases. The final result will be a Top 1000 for Official Albums, and Top ~250 for Live/EP albums.

These are general rankings of how I see them today, and based on my Last.FM songs playcounts (2005-now) put through the formula:

Total Sum of each Album's Song's (running time X playcount)
    DIVIDED BY
    Album's Total Running Time

Thanks to MediaMonkey and its amazing scripting abilities, that formula gives an Album's REAL playcount, taking into consideration every song's lenght & playcount in relation to the overall album's lenght and # of songs on it.
You'll see the result (# of times I've really listened to an album since 2005) besides each, along with my 10* Rating. (x/x)
Besides each Year, you get the Total of all Albums' Playcounts and the average of all Albums' Ratings. (x / %)

Note that I haven't necessarily discovered and enjoyed all these albums on their released years, some I discovered years later. So these are also based on how important (to me) some of these albums were at the time.

    (**) are the complete albums I was into at that time;
    (*) are albums that contained only a few song(s) I was into or listened to at that time;
and those without (*) are albums I discovered years later.
