Polar Bear - Broomhill Art Hotel (18 Nov)
Nov 22 2009, 13h08 por thiswindow
Polar Bear's first set featured new material from their forthcoming album (2010) and was a journey into the melodic, with the unmistakable sax of Pete Wareham weaving in between ethereal and aggressive executions, in a beautifully controlled unpretentious style. The rest of the team were in no way supporting players; with everything sounding like a well oiled machine, sweet, solid and with purpose.

Ruckus Collective
The band really took off in 2008, playing over 30 gigs (actually only up til August/September), visiting a few different cities and recording a full-length studio album, Stop, Drop, Dance!, during a crazy period after uni exams in June. Earlier in the year we also self-produced a five-track EP, Rise Of The Ruckusaurus. Apart from that I played the odd function gig here and there around Bristol, and plenty of jams - always good fun.

Broadcasting
While I was in Bristol, I had a weekly show on BURST Radio called Off The Hook. It was a really cool experience and I played a lot of different tunes, as well as being joined by several guests from the local music scene. I won't go into detail here, as this is already too long, but you can see the myspace page for info and playlists. [Some of my friends have taken it over this year, as I'm not attending uni at the moment, so tune in!]
Many thanks to anyone who's had a look at this post - all the best wishes for Christmas and the New Year!
peace,

got bored... so an evaluation of what i think to modern music
Ago 11 2008, 21h08 por josh_down
ok, this isn't me shouting at you and telling you 'all your music sux! go download some decent stuff!' but this is what i see in music nowerdays...
for a start, my music tastes...
most bands i've come across. i haven't specifically read a band's reviews and thought 'they sound like they'd be good'. for example... i was taken to go and see Polar Bear by my parents, and i thought that they were amazing! now i think they're about my number 8 or something and their new album is awesome... also, 'Animal Collective i saw in a friends last fm profile and decided to give them a listen. i saw that i had a free album offer where i shop, so i though 'why not?' and downloaded one of their albums.
i'm partly saying this because of the obsession with Radiohead and Coldplay. i used to love radiohead... earlier this year infact i listened to them loads, but i got bored really quickly. i don't see anything in them now. you can go on about how they've revolutionised popular music as we see it today, but i don't care about that... if they suck i still won't listen to them.
yeah, and coldplay? well... the first three albums sounded like just one long continuous song which never changed, and the new one, i quite liked for a bit, now i'm bored of it. then i resort to the video's but there's only so often that i can laugh at chris martin for looking like martin dear from green wing... then i focus back on the music and get bored again.
argh... what other popular band are there out there? Muse? they're ok, and their musically amazing players and such with some awesome keyboards... but again... kinda get's boring... the onyl three songs i listen to now are 'time is runing out', 'invincible' and 'hysteria'... maybe 'starlight'.
so what i have to do is look away from stuff you can actually buy in shops and listen to stuff where i say their name and people just go... 'who?'... the Super Furry Animals are famous for having a funny name, but name me one song? no-one except fans can do it... which i kinda like because they're not even like Daft Punk where people go 'oh that who did that tune'.
i've also resorted in the past year or so to bands who don;t even exist anymore... Angel Hair were around for like... 10 months, but they still managed to record an album and several eps. and every single track is seriously awesome. Adhesive finished in 2002, gay dad were only around for one year.
also... just stuff that no-one else would even want to listen to cause its just so weird. Polar Bear? Led Bib? most people who hear them just want it off instantly cause... i will admit... sometimes it is just a racket of improvised noise... but they're the best bits! Susanna and the Magical Orchestra? well they're just basically a singer most of the time with no rhythm 99% of the time.
in my opinion (has nothing to do with real life here) i think that the people with the best music tastes are the people who have some flair and mystery in their tastes... like people who just have the usual suspects (Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles) as their top artists are just a little bit boring and have no real imagination. there is no kind of unusualness to that kind of playlist
but that;s only my opinion... for anyone who does have those artists as their top 4 then i am sorry. lol -
