    14. The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky
    15. Blacklisted by Neko Case
    16. Friend Or Foe by Menomena)

    Greatest single ever made:
Oh my gaw, um! There are so many. I'll just pick one from outta the air: Tocar(I've Had) The Time Of My Life.

    Favourite boxed set:
Join The Dots by The Cure
I don't really do box sets.

    Favourite Greatest Hits:
Catching Up With Depeche Mode, which I still think is one of DM's best albums (woops!).

    First CD bought:
With my own money, it was Fallen by Evanescence. Before that I remember most vividly Jennifer Page's Crush single, and Hanson's Middle Of Nowhere and 3 Car Garage.

    First Concert:
For REAL real concert? Hanson at (the now defunct) Reunion Arena.

    Favourite Concert:
I have a few favorite live acts I've seen: Midlake, Explosions in the Sky, Pilotdrift... but when talking about a concert you have to take into consideration the entire event. The openers, the crowd, the sound system....... I'm gonna have to go with a festival of sorts. It was in Fort Worth, and I forget the name of the thing, but IN A ROW I saw Midlake, Explosions in the Sky, and Ghostland Observatory. The crowd was way into all of it, the sound was fine, the midnight sky was starry and clear. Eased in with Midlake, upped the epic soundscapes with Explosions, and climaxed in erratic dance with Ghostland. It was perfect. Earlier in the evening as the sun started to go down, we sat in the grass drinking beer and watched (listened to) Pinback. That was a very relaxing time in my life.

EDIT: Wall of Sound! It was called Wall of Sound!
    at LaGrave Field
    Saturday 22 September 2007 (thanks, last.fm!)

    Concert You Wish You'd Seen:
I wish I had seen The Beatles. I also wish I had seen Fleetwood Mac circa late 70s-early 80s.

Best Use of Music In Film:
    See: Quentin Tarantino films.
I'll have to go with Pam Grier singing along to TocarAcross 110th Street at the end of Jackie Brown.

Best Use of Music In TV series:
I'm getting sick of these shows like Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, and The O.C. using easy listening indie pop as a sounding board. I hate it all. It's sentimentalist crap. Um, I'm gonna have to go with American Idol. Really, they've been bringing in some class acts lately to perform for and mentor the contestants.
The L Word usually uses (used :( ) great music.

    Favourite music books:
Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield
Killing Yourself to Live by Chuck Klosterman
This is Your Brain on Music by Daniel J. Levitin

    Favourite Songwriters:
Rufus Wainwright, John Lennon, Elliott Smith, Ben Folds (although, I'm not happy with his latest, Way to Normal. :\), Jason Mraz

    Favourite album covers:
Revolver by The Beatles, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails, Aladdin Sane by David Bowie, Dreamboat Annie by Heart, Bryter Layter by Nick Drake, The Slider by T.Rex

Least fav album covers to albums you like/love/don't mind
Zeitgeist by The Smashing Pumpkins, Brain Thrust Mastery by We Are Scientists, Stadium Arcadium by Red Hot Chili Peppers.... notice these are all within very recent years, hmmm?

    Favourite Music DVDs:
Fleetwood Mac's The Dance, The Cure's Trilogy, Bernadette Peters' Sondheim, Etc.

Artist You Will Always Believe In:
    Rufus Wainwright

    Artist You Will Always Defend:
    Evanescence
    Tears for Fears
    Fleetwood Mac
    Jason Mraz
    Carrie Underwood

    Albums You Will Always Defend:
Dandy In The Underworld by T.Rex
Seeds Of Love by Tears for Fears
By the Way by Red Hot Chili Peppers
    The Bends by Radiohead

Singers Who Can Make Your Skin Crawl:
    Michael McDonald

Artists I'm Supposed to like, but don't.
I got a lot of these.
    Neutral Milk Hotel
    Broken Social Scene
    The Arcade Fire
    Muse
    The Fiery Furnaces
    Iron & Wine
    Godspeed You! Black Emperor
    ...

Song You Can't Stand by an Artist You Like:
TocarYour Body Is a Wonderland by John Mayer

    Artist Who Broke Your Heart:
Our Lady Peace... what the hell happened?! These guys were wicked in the 90's. They were kind of cryptic yet spiritual and rockin'. Oh, and Maida's solo stuff is shit, too.
    - heliotropic2005

    It's true. I agree wholeheartedly.

Opeth kinda broke my heart when Martin Lopez fled.
I never really cared enough about U2 for them to break my heart, but it's a shame they became so lousy (& holier than thou).

    Band That Should Break Up:
    Journey
    Bon Jovi
Evanescence, probably. Amy just needs to go solo. She's too driven and strong-willed to be held back by a band.
    Sonic Youth
    Rilo Kiley

Bands That Should Get Back Together:
Tears for Fears (have they broken up? What's going on????????)
    Ben Folds Five
    Sleater-Kinney
    A Pacific Model

    Guilty Pleasure:
I am not guilty. I love Barbra Streisand.

  • A special mix - The Mythology of ants

    Ago 28 2007, 5h07 por Serpent_axed

A few months back my friend fakehand aka fakehead sent me this mix. I had a chance to soak it up and enjoyed repeated listens while out of state on military orders.

A just thought I would comment on the mix and songs sequentially.

    1. Softis the first artist w/ TocarDroppin' - a bubbly opener w/ similarities to a band I like called South. Fresh w/ a slow march feel - almost ethereal. Nicely layered w/ clean production. The up-down of the vocal goes along w/ the lyrics well. I like the chimey sounds of the guitar. The song is atmospheric almost anthemic.

    2. Tori Amos is next w/ TocarSugar which starts out w/ deep tribal drums and piano synergy. Almost goth in the way her low vocal verse gets emphasis. Almost operatic in the verse w/ a tinge of Marianne Faithful in style. She belts it out and it sounds like classic Tori.

    3. Ghosts and Vodka are next up w/ TocarIt's All About Right Then. The song is upbeat w/ warm tones of acoustic and electric guitar intertwined in a slightly summery feel w/ syncopated rhythm and crash accents. Chiming chords that roll along and disappear slowly.

    4. Fair to Midland jumps in right after Ghosts and Vodka w/ an upbeat rockin' tune. A Seafarer's Knot
which is churning and theatric, almost nautical sounding, like the rise and fall of the ocean. The tune rolls along w/ bells tolling and a dash o' System of a Down's heaviness. I like the echo in reverberating vocal w/ the line "As thick as thieves". It is atmospheric with arpeggiated piano and solid bass. A beautiful rock tune that gets you pumped. This is one you might want to do calisthenics to.

    5. The Paper Chase lunges in next w/ Who Can Deny How Delicious it Tastes?. A wild stomping piano based tune is filled w/ Bobcat Goldthwaitesque spastic vocals and clever lines like "we'll never speak of my father again". Murky bass gurgling and sinewy guitars keep it spicy along w/ accents on the crash cymbals. Very good choice for those who like Isaac Brock's shouting voice. An interesting track in the midst of many other moods. I felt this held special significance since I enjoy doing restaurant and beer reviews, the title makes sense. "back to the anthills"

    6. Pilotdrift has the segway from uproarious to mellow w/ Bubblecraft that has acoustic strumming and dreamy vocals ala Muse waltz in w/ electronic effects A cool samba percussive beat makes you think of having a holiday in space. Probably one of my faves here it has a lot going on. Lilting strings and the line "my mind looks like the inside of a vcr".

    7. We Are Scientists join the fun w/ The Nature of Empirical Truth, which is an upbeat ditty w/ piano and silly lyrics that make sense like "birds make the worst kind of pets". It has you snapping and table drumming before the end. I can see someone tap-dancing to this like the six flags guy. The vocal harmonies and drumming are great.

    8. Ben Kweller does In Other Words which is a sad ballad reminiscent of some of the other Ben's. This song is poignant and beautiful and really has a nice chorus "Butterflies are passive aggressive, they put their problems up on the shelf" I like how it picks up w/ "It starts stoppin". It is great how the piano and his voice seem to work in unison - "what can't stay goes away" this is simple but true, good for self realization.

    9. Red House Painters come in with another fine tune Have You Forgotten? which is a stripped down version of the highlight of the Vanilla sky soundtrack for me. The message comes through even clearer acoustically. A sad, beautiful tune, the lines "Your friends are fucked up anyway" + "Nobody's nice when you're old your heart turns to ice" It kind of snaps you out of a haze of self pity if you feel that way. It makes you aware you aren't alone-uplifting sarcasm. I really love the guitar tone and vocal delivery. The strumming gives a percussive feel almost like he is singing acapella.

    10. Spiritualized brings the tempo and mood back up w/ TocarI Think I'm in Love. Bits of the song get added one by one - Bass, keys, a dolphin-like sound effect, vocals: all in layers. The epitomy of summer and sunny, a pulse makes you want to nod your head along to the tambourine. It is great how the guitar and harmonica and drums ar all layered so well, like when you eat a good burger and each ingredient is tasted in every bite. As it goes along the horns join in the march. "I think I can rock n' roll, probably just twisted" I can associate w/ that. The fade out keeps you listenin' til the end w/ a great guitar tone.

    11. Roxy Music has the next spot w/ TocarLadytron - Bryan Ferry sings the opening vocal in a very English way w/ an interesting cadence like a sonnet. The next thing you hear is a combination of laid back guitar strum with drums while he sings to a lady. The tune moves on progressively and flows very well which reminds me a bit of Van der Graaf Generator w/ a temp the increases and added intstruments. There is a bit of T-Rex in there also with a beautiful melody and rhythm as the sweet piano speeds up into the fade.

    12. Francoise Hardy does Message personnel which is a brilliant tune that focuses on her beautiful voice while she sings in French. Piano anchors the ballad and the chords are great for imagining a rainy day in Paris. Bittersweet feelings are evoked w/ chanting of background vox. The french language adds a beautiful emotional element that continues to build w/ the strings. It brings to mind a river and rowing as it flows on.

    13. The Corner w/ the Last Poets and Kanye West starts off with a hip-hop beatand samples that pulses. A poppin' tune w/ a commentary on black culture and music. The line about "dyin' just to make a living" is about survival, Umar Bin Hassan speaks w/ urgency as if there is an Armageddon emminent. Kanye West says "I wish I could give you this feeling" as if to wake you from your slumber.

    14. Can is next with another stand-out track Vitamin C, an intense synchronicity between the drums and bass starts things off. Vocals are urgent shouting "Hey You!"..."You are losing..." This is a motivational song also w/ pulsing rhythm, crash cymbal accents and vocal urgency. Like an obstacle course, you are slipping up at . The keys add tension and tie it all together. I could listen to this track over + over - it makes you feel alive.

    15. Eyeless in Gaza rounds out the compilation w/ One Light Then which starts with finger picking on a guitar and eerie sound fx that gives you a feeling of dreaminess. A voice that is smooth and similar to the way Davendra Banhart emotes begins to join the music.
This continues the dreamy feel which is shifted abruptly into a pulsing trance beat. A dynamic shift into rhythm and repeated sound effects and drones. A throaty woodwind and high pitched organ w/ a percussive element pushes it into a climax w/ slow strumming.

A somewhat middle eastern feel w/ melody and pitches/mood changes make it a song that is a little bit all over the map w/ swirling and circling tones.

This was a great and enjoyable mix that kept me wanting more. Enlightenting view of music through songs I haven't heard. Lots of mood and energy - it made me want to listen repeatedly finding new unheard elements.
I appreciate the gift and the insight it contained, Thanks Fakehand!

  • Things in America

    Jun 27 2006, 9h45 por PropaneSteve

So i fly out to america on thursday, and whilst i won't be doing lots of music stuff, there's at least 3 that i'm excited about.

Tacks, the Boy Disaster in Austin on Saturday 1st. I know about these guys through moustachioed ex-spree keyboard player Evan Jacobs. It's their CD release party and i'll deffo be buying it. Listen to some tracks on their myspace. Matilda is worthwhile.

Then there's Danielson and Pilotdrift at Rubber Gloves in Denton on July 8th. This I am really excited about; there's a lot of Pilotdrift's stuff that I just don't get on the record, and I'd love to see how it performs live. And as for Danielson: fsldkjfaksldfhlssajfsldkghnvslk.

And of course there's a billion and one brilliant bands to look forward to at Lollapalooza. Not least old favourites The Flaming Lips, Sleater-Kinney, Broken Social Scene, Hot Chip, etc, but stuff i haven't seen in the form of Sonic Youth, The New Pornographers, Wilco, Ben Kweller, Eels and Midlake

  • This Album is amazing!!

    Mai 18 2006, 20h10 por Earlmo

For those of you who like Dark Side Of The Moon, or Pink Floyd in general, check out Water Sphere!! I really think the complexity of this album is comparable to Dark Side Of The Moon. Its almost exactly the same length, has good lyrics, insane layering, and is pretty intense as an album. Each song is so different, but they all fit together so well. It almost sounds as if the album is a musical/rock opera.. Seriously, check it out.. its awesome.. Actually, I would go as far to say that Water Sphere is as good if not better, at least for my taste, than Dark Side Of The Moon.. which yes, i know, is a sin.. but its that good. But dont let my words persuade you, check it out!! If anyone needs it, just send me a message.

Also, does anyone have Pilotdrift's other album?? If anyone has it, PLEASE message me, i want to check it out.. Thanks!!

    Pilotdrift kicks ass.
So i write them a haiku
    telling them such things.

  • Gaz still rocks

    Fev 24 2006, 7h03 por MartiniVinyl

I went to see Supergrass last night at the Avalon in Hollywood. They were pretty amazing. I was talking to my friend and they are one of the bands that we always want to see when they are in town. I remember seeing them when they played at a scooter rally in San Jose. I really liked how they came out one at a time and Gaz started it off with playing his acoustic guitar and singing one of the songs off of Road To Rouen. Then did an acoustic version of TocarCaught By The Fuzz.

This band called Pilotdriftopened up for them. I never heard of them before but I guess they are from Texarkana. Is that how that's spelled? For the longest time we couldn't place them but to me the guy sang like Danny Elfman but sounded like Radiohead. They were ok. They reminded me a bit of Pinback in that they switched instruments during their set. They ended with a big flourishing percussion set which reminded me even more of Radiohead.
