  • Ahead of its time

    Fev 26 2008, 19h04 por deckvoint

1967 was the probably the most important year in the contemporary pop music and with all the musical revolution of those times, it is almost impossible to think that a rock album could have been ahead of its time.

When we consider that 1967 has seen the release of The Beatles' Sargeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and saw the birth of bands like Pink Floyd and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, we would expect to see any kind of experimental music getting its deserved recognization (or sometimes even more than it deserved). But how could a duo often compared with Peter and Gordon and, in their folkish moments, Simon and Garfunkel, be ahead of their time?

The answer is simple. Just listen to their long forgotten album Of Cabbages and Kings. The first song, Rest In Peace. It will blow away any psychedelic rock fan, but among its different parts, sitars, flutes, etc, you will find an orchestra fully integrated to their music. It may be the first time that the orchestra was used as one more instrument in the music. The arrangements were made by a member of the band, Chad Stuart. And you can feel it even in the less daring songs like The Gentle Cold of Dawn or the beautiful ballad Can I See You

And, of course, the best comes in the end, with a 26-minute long suite named The Progress Suite, where they blend classical-like orchestral arrangements, avant-garde, psychedelic rock, church-like chorus, sound effects, etc. And with a coherent orchestra playing all the time, much beyond the lush orchestral "Wall of Sound", orchestral arrangements by ones like George Martin and the orchestral arrangements of Moody Blues' debut.

Of course, like all those ahead of their time, they never got the recognization they deserved. They are seldom remembered and when they are, they are remembered for their pop rock songs of the beginning of their career. But luckly the music is not lost and those who know this unique masterpiece can consider themselves gifted.

  • A Brief History Of...The British Invasion

    Jan 27 2008, 20h08 por BadgerJohn31

The description and playlist below are from the weekly radio show (A Brief History Of…) that my friend and I host on WSUM 91.7fm Madison. We selected songs we felt were either historically important or just representative of each specific topic. Please comment if you feel we missed something or just to give your opinion. Remember, however, that we do this show in an hour (about 50 minutes of music). Track length is a major factor in our decisions (shorter is usually better). Thanks!

A Brief History of…The British Invasion considers the common belief that massive numbers of British artists overran the American pop charts in 1964. The first half of show dismantles this belief, showing that British influence on the charts was more gradual. The second half explains that British music had its own differences and explores the innovative new directions many “British Invasion” artists took in the mid-60s.

Here's the playlist from this show:

British Music in the 50s - What the Hell Is Skiffle?:
TocarRock Island Line by Lonnie Donegan (1954)

Gradual Infiltration of the American Charts:
TocarMove It by Cliff Richard (1958)
    TocarTelstar by The Tornados (1962)
TocarStay Awhile by Dusty Springfield (1964)

Early Failed Attempts to Cross the Pond:
Please Please Me by The Beatles (1963)
I Wanna Be Your Man by The Rolling Stones (1963)

    The British Invasion Proper:
TocarNeedles And Pins by The Searchers (1964)
TocarFerry Cross The Mersey by Gerry & The Pacemakers (1964)
TocarCan't You Hear My Heartbeat by Herman's Hermits (1964)
A World Without Love by Peter & Gordon (1964). Although this was one of the few British singles to reach #1 in 1964 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, it was written by Lennon/McCartney, so does it really count as another artist reaching #1? Hardly.
TocarHouse Of The Rising Sun by The Animals (1964). "The House of the Rising Sun" pushed the boundaries of track length with its 4:30 run-time. It also reaced #1 in the US.

    The Mods:
Mods vs Rockers was a British youth culture war in the early 60s. The Rockers favored American Rock & Roll from the 50s while the Mods listened to more world music and British R&B such as the following:
TocarAll Day And All Of The Night by The Kinks (1964)
TocarHippy Hippy Shake by The Swinging Blue Jeans (1964)
TocarI Don't Mind by The Who (1965). "I Don't Mind" was a James Brown cover - yet again showing the influence of earlier American Rock & Roll.
TocarHeart Full Of Soul by The Yardbirds (1965)

    Still Pop:
TocarShe's Not There by The Zombies (1964)
TocarBus Stop by The Hollies (1966)

    New Directions/Innovation:
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away by The Beatles (1965). "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" shows the Beatles (especially John Lennon) beginning to incorporate the influences of Bob Dylan into their songwriting. The following three years would be a constant back-and-forth, a competitive sharing of ideas, among Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys (and to a lesser extent others).
TocarPaint It, Black by The Rolling Stones (1966). Both the Rolling Stones and the Beatles took an interest in Eastern music, particularly Indian music, around 1966. The sitar features prominently in a number of tracks from each artist, including, famously, "Paint It, Black."
TocarHappy Jack by The Who (1966). "Happy Jack" is a story-telling song. It marks the beginning of Peter Townshend's development of the Rock-Opera.

The Worst of the British Invasion (and the Funniest):
TocarWinchester Cathedral by New Vaudeville Band (1966)

  • Interesting Beatles Covers/Give-Aways

    Mai 23 2007, 11h31 por obladi-oblada

The Beatles (especially Paul McCartney & John Lennon) were so fantastic in songwriting, that they gave away lots of (good) songs. Many of those covers made it into the top-10 (maybe because the songs were written by one (or more) members of The Beatles, or it were just a good songs).

Here are some songs which were not well known (but in my opinion are still great interesting tunes):

1 - Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas - TocarI'm In Love (Compleat Take) (You can hear John Lennon (who wrote it) shouting)
2 - Carlos Mendes - Penina (Paul McCartney)
3 - Cilla Black - TocarIt's For You (John Lennon Intro & Outro) (John Lennon/Paul McCartney)
4 - Fourmost - TocarHello Little Girl (John Lennon)
    5 - Fourmost - TocarI'm in Love (John Lennon)
6 - Freddie Lennon - That's My Life (Rare 1965 Single By John's Father) (Not written by The Beatles)
7 - Mary Hopkin - In My Life (Live) (John Lennon*/Paul McCartney)
    8 - P.J. Proby - TocarThat Means A Lot (John Lennon/Paul McCartney*)
9 - Peter and Gordon - I Don't Want to See You Again (Paul McCartney Intro And Outro) (John Lennon/Paul McCartney*)
10 - Rolf Harris & The Beatles - Tie Me A Kangaroo Down, Sport (Not written by The Beatles)
11 - The Applejacks - Like Dreamers Do (John Lennon/Paul McCartney*)
12 - The Black Dyke Mills Band - Thingumybob (John Lennon/Paul McCartney*)
13 - The Strangers With Mike Shannon - One And One Is Two (John Lennon/Paul McCartney*)

  • Top 10 survey

    Set 12 2006, 15h08 por zaxxon25

Name your top 10 most played bands on Last.fm:

    1. American Music Club
    2. Richard Hawley
    3. Red House Painters
    4. Ween
    5. John Vanderslice
    6. Josh Rouse
    7. Matt Pond PA
    8. Feist
    9. The Zombies
    10. Suzanne Vega

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 7?
The Hollows is the first I remember, those soaring strings coming out of the chorus really impressed me. Played it several times, though it wasn't until the File 13 reissue that I actually picked up the album.

What is your favourite album of 2?
Coles Corner was my favourite album of 2005.

What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung?
White Plains, the whole thing really. If there's one line that encapsulates it, "but the truth is I have no faith in happiness/it turns to fear, draws the devils near." You cannot escape what is inside yourself, there are intrinsic elements that make you YOU and some of them are negative.

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Once, when they played Radiothon at Trenton State College in 1992. Had tickets to see them at the Roxy in the late 90's but didn't realize the 6:30pm start time on the ticket actually meant 6:30! Damn dance clubs ...

What is your favourite song by 6?
Michigan. It's a tough call as I like pretty much everything he's done. For those who haven't heard it, the song is a basically an aural letter home. I can feel right where he is. When his voice breaks a little it hurts, you know what he's going through. The lyrics hint at so much without being specific about the details. That's the sign of a great songwriter in my book, restraint. He doesn't need to load on the details, but just gives enough for it to connect. The mystery is in the space in between the words, and that's what gives the song richer meaning.

What is a good memory you have considering the music of 10?
I have many fantastic memories of listening to Suzanne Vega. Luka became a hit when I was a junior in high school. I was driving my debate partner home from an afterschool research session when it came on the radio one day, she expressed admiration for it and I was immediately entraced. Purchased the Solitude Standing CD, probably later that week, and transferred it to cassette as a driving soundtrack. I have a vivid memory of driving my mother's 1984 Nissan Stanza with Fancy Poultry blaring over the speakers, one of those snapshot moments that inexplicably never leaves the memory, I can still feel that moment to this day.

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
Well, Mark Kozelek is arguably the champion of sad songwriting. If I had to pick a personal saddest moment, it would be TocarHave You Forgotten, if only because lack of self confidence keeps us from trying and experiencing so much in our lives. Even with that knowledge it's difficult to extract myself from the emotion.

What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung?
Well, my favorite song is Coles Corner, a sumptuously melancholy song, eerily channeling Scott Walker through an early evening haze. A detached observance of details, settings and possibilities ignored by a populace obsessed with places to be and people to see. The song just melts, coating the listener with Hawley's aimless world of fading hope. The romantic possibilities of transcendent music and compelling companionship are just out of reach. As you might notice, I'm having a difficult time picking one lyric. The moment where he says "No smile, no flower nowhere" is particularly moving, outside of the context of the song it's meaningless.

What is your favourite song by 9?
Care of Cell 44. Ever notice that its gender-neutral?

How did you get in to 3?
4AD sent a promo of Down Colorful Hill to WRUR, where I was doing reviews as the assistant Music Director at the time. It was easily the most gushingly positive review I wrote during my tenure there, which is a sign of how immediately enthusiastic I was about RHP (and still am today).

What was the first song you heard by 1?
Most likely TocarRise from the EP for that single. While it didn't make too much of an impact on me at that moment, somewhere along the line it prompted me to purchase the disc. Took me awhile to really appreciate AMC, unlike my RHP story above.

What is your favourite song by 4?
Impossible to pick a favorite by them, considering the depth and breadth of their musical output. The one that seems to make most of my mixtapes is TocarPollo Asado, just for the stonerish vibe and the not-so-obvious comedic moments.

How many times have you seen 9 live?
Never, though Argent & Colin Blunstone are coming around very soon. I'll still likely miss them as I haven't heard too much positive about the reunion shows.

What is a great memory you have considering 9?
I have an aunt that's around 15 years older than I am. When she moved out of the house, my grandmother gave us her box of 45s. I credit/blame this box of records with starting my life of musical obsession. I must have been 5 or 6, we had a Fischer Price turntable with a needle that gouged the hell out of those records. But Dusty Springfield, The Zombies, Bobby Vee, Peter & Gordon, Nancy Sinatra, Rolf Harris, etc ... permanently seared the value of perfectly produced pop songs in my musical taste buds.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
It would have to be Gatekeeper since that's the first track on Let It Die. I passed up purchasing the heavily discounted disc several times before impulse finally trumped fiscal responsibility, considering its placement on this survey it was a good investment.
