I was wondering... Why few people know and like this song? The lyrics are amazing and very contemporary. The meaning is intelligent and realistic. Why people think that terrorists are bad and must be eliminated? They're people like us, but deeply influenced by the local religion. They thrown airplanes in buildings because they think doing that, they'll be saved. As well as people pray or do something totally irrational in the name of religion. Come on, people... This should be the anthem of anyone who knows what we all are living now... After all these years, rock still is utterly overrated...

This song is amazing. It's like synthpop music come full circle. The Human League wrote all kinds of dark songs themed around the future (they were even called The Future when they started), and The Pet Shop Boys came along right as The League was kind of mellowing out and sticking to soft ballads. So having these two powerhouse performers on one track is a dream come true!

Love the Chris' part! I would like to hear this live! Really great. And the lyrics, although a little pessimist, sincere and realist. I liked the "nuclear energy and religion have united" bit. And the "prejudice and religion disappear"... I think this is quite a modern anthem!

Great song - and it is a duet between Neil and Philip Oakey (from Human League). From the PSB official site: "Along with the regular release of "Yes" on March 23rd, there'll be a double-CD release including a bonus CD which Pet Shop Boys have titled "etc." The first track on it is a new Tennant/Lowe song, produced by Xenomania, called "This used to be the future", which features vocals by Neil, Chris and guest vocalist Philip Oakey from The Human League. The other six tracks on "etc." are instrumental dub mixes by Xenomania and Pet Shop Boys of tracks from "Yes". (The inspiration for this bonus album came from The Human League's 1982 dub album, "Love and Dancing".)

I can't stop listening to this track. I love it. It's fast become my favourite on the album. It kinda reminds me of the 1920s film "Metropolis", which is a film I love.
