Nieuwe koers, zelfde resultaat.

Juliette Lewis heeft een ongrijpbaar charisma, waardoor ze het in een door Playboynormen gedomineerd Hollywood met haar androgyne verschijning tot filmster kon schoppen. Ze wordt zelfs sexier, naarmate ze zich in meer bizarre outfits hijst. Dat contrasteerde nogal met de dertien-uit-een-dozijn rock die ze met haar band The Licks op haar vorige twee platen liet horen. Dat deze platen toch geslaagd zijn, kan puur op het conto van de intense, door Patti Smith en PJ Harvey beïnvloede voordracht van Lewis worden geschreven.

Lewis vond zelf ook dat ze The Licks ontgroeid was, zette ze aan de kant en begon te werken aan materiaal met meer diepgang. Op het nieuwe, als soloplaat gepresenteerde album, bezoekt ze Terra Incognita. Dat doet ze samen met producer Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, van The Mars Volta en tien jaarlijkse soloplaten vol progjazzgenoedel.

Het lijkt een ideale combinatie: Lewis kan profiteren van de muzikale kunde en vindingrijkheid van Rodriguez-Lopez, wiens neiging tot geknutsel in toom wordt gehouden door het liedjesstramien dat Lewis hem oplegt. Helaas pakt het op Terra Incognita slechts een paar keer zo uit.

Uiteindelijk komt het er op neer dat Lewis geen topsongschrijfster is. Meer dan drie of vier voltreffers levert ze niet af. Vooral de rustige nummers blijven ook in Rodriguez-Lopez' meerlagige productie meestal bleekjes. Heel erg fout is de poging tot authentieke blues in 'Hard Lovin' Woman'.

Maar als het werkt, dan knalt het ook meteen met een enorme kracht de huiskamer in. Zo doet 'Ghosts' zijn naam eer aan: Lewis' hese stem klinkt enorm op de voorgrond en laat de rillingen al over je rug lopen, terwijl Rodriguez-Lopez het in de diepte onheilspellend laat ratelen en knisperen. Ook in 'All Is For God' - op elk Lewisalbum staat tot nu toe een gospelrocker - is de Heilige Geest duidelijk aanwezig.

Het beste nummer is echter het eerste: 'Noche Sin Fin' is de ultieme Mars Voltasingle, als The Mars Volta singles zou hebben gemaakt en een zangeres had gehad in plaats van dat krijsende speenvarken.

Zo is Terra Incognita ondanks alle veranderingen een typische Juliette Lewisplaat: veel opvulling, maar uiteindelijk toch de moeite waard door de sterke nummers.

Noah and the Whale's follow up to their excellent indie-folk pop-pastoral debut Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down is a more reflective album.

The First Days Of Spring explores the disillusionment of a broken relationship which is a theme that runs throughout. As a concept this sounds like the album could be a bit of a downer and it is definitely a move in that direction, though it has a beauty of capturing the frailty of the human condition. The opener of the same name as the album's title is a beautiful track with lush strings and thoughtful airy production lending an air of humanity. These themes are touched upon in their debut but they always had another track to bring you up again, this album tends to wallow in disillusionment, and he's lost some of the optimism and enchantment of falling in love proclaimed on their first album. The beautiful production makes sense when you realise it's under masterful control of producer Emery Dobyns (Anthony And The Johnsons, Patti Smith)

The album has a kind of filmic soundtrack vibe to it conjuring up landscapes and emotions which is just as well as Charlie Fink (vocals, guitar) has made a film of the same name to run the length of the album. Absent off this album is Laura Marling’s vocals, which gives this album a more personal focus and it seems like a simpler affair. It is also less textural than the first album with less acoustic guitar which pulls it away from their indie-folk roots.

There are occasional punctuations of up-beat mini-divergences like Love Of An Orchestra, a boombastic musing on exactly that and strangely reminds me of being in a church with the fullness of a backing choir, and the musical interludes throughout occasionally sound out of place but would probably make more sense with the visual accompaniment of the film.

Although a great sounding album this follow up marks a move away from the cheery rural playfulness of the debut and into a more grown-up territory. If you're a an existing fan then you'll appreciate the return of Charlie Fink's honey pastoral vocals and the lush backing though miss the upbeat liveliness of the first album.

Blue Skies bring the album back up from the wallows of reflection and into a more positive frame of mind but it's a little too little too late to keep the album buoyant above the subject matter. Hopefully Charlie will get his mojo back and find love again in time for the follow-up. Despite this. it is nonetheless a heart-breakingly beautiful album that you should listen to.
