Butch Walker is back with another masterpiece. The singer/songwriter/producer has taken the time to complete an album full of strong modern rock & roll songs that will only confirm what we already knew. Butch Walker is one of today's most talented musical acts.

    The Weight Of Her
The Weight Of Her is the catchy rock & roll song that you'd expect from an artist like Butch Walker. He is widely acknowledged as one of today's finest songwriters, and he proves it right on this first track. The lyrics and the music communicate with each other, which provides for a song that is not just radio-friendly but also well-composed.

    Going Back/Going Home
The album continues with the country-rock influenced Going Back/Going Home, a song with a style that reminds me slightly of Slobberbone. The song is a musical masterpiece and the combination of storytelling qualities and free melody that carries on and tilts the song to your ears is pure genius.

    Here Comes The?
This is an obvious choice for a radio single if you ask me. With a sound that is somewhere in between Chad Perrone & Patrick Park (both very respectable singer/songwriters that I count among my absolute favorites), Butch Walker takes the genre to another level. In itself this song might not seem too special to you, but if you listen to the subtleties in the music you can only appreciate Butch Walker's songwriting.

    Ponce de Leon Ave.
Gimme some swingin' rock & roll and throw in a French title, voila! Butch Walker just continues to show his talent and his musical excellence. While Ponce de Leon Ave. isn't among the album's finest it is another great rock & roll song that is part of this strong album.

    Ships In A Bottle
Ships In A Bottle has a focus on the powerful and passionate vocals, and on the excellent piano melody. The dynamic interaction between these two musical lines is something that displays why Butch Walker is so good at what he does. Everything is in total synch and helps other parts of the song come out great. Aside from that, this song is arranged very well and the lyrics are very very strong.

    Vessels
While Vessels is another strong song, I do feel it is one of the lesser ones on "Sycamore Meadows". A good thing is that Butch Walker's music never sounds forced or fabricated. It's always smooth and pure, but on Vessels I don't think he's at his peak vocally and musically the song isn't as diverse or powerful as I hoped. My expectations are very high when it comes to Butch Walker, and usually he can easily meet them, but this time I'm afraid it's a close call.

Passed Your Place, Saw Your Car, Thought Of You
The intimate Passed Your Place, Saw Your Car, Thought Of You is something of an extraordinary high level. It's typically Butch Walker to come up with a song that says so much as this one. Lyrically it is (one of) the best on this album and the way he makes a melodic song with minimal melodic lines is just sheer brilliance. The effects and subtle keys sometimes are in the exact right places and the song just shines in absolute wonder.

    The 3 Kids In Brooklyn
On The 3 Kids In Brooklyn Butch Walker rivals Bob Dylan in the storytelling, empathic folk/rock song department. Where Dylan was the master of this genre in the 60s/70s and Bruce Springsteen took over for the 80s/90s, Butch Walker is surely the heir to the thrown.

    Summer Scarves
The oboe is not a typical instrument in pop music, but mr. Walker has found a way to incorporate it in this excellent musical arrangement. He throws in a couple other unexpected instruments and it gives it a little dreamy, mysterious, melancholic warmth. And Butch Walker's signature vocals just emphasize the emotion that lies within this song.

    A Song For The Metalheads
This folk song with an unusual title is something that you wouldn't expect, yet typical for Butch Walker. The sentimental and catchy guitar tune with exceptional lyrics and a cute harmonica just is another example of how diverse and musically sophisticated Butch Walker can be.

Closer To The Truth & Further From The Sky
Closer To The Truth & Further From The Sky is something that could do well on radio maybe, though it might not be the most obvious choice. It's a powerpop song that reminds me a little of my friends John Taglieri & Keith LuBrant. Just like them, Butch Walker provides us with an inspirational powerpop song that is not only memorable but also draws from different influences without losing its unity and completeness as a song.

    ATL
The album ends with ATL, a piano-based ballad which would be perfect for a movie score. The melancholic, sentimental song draws on the emotional connection with the listener and the compassion and honesty that it holds in its music and lyrics. Butch Walker, like no other, can bring a song to you and make you connect to it in a way that you might not have expected.
ATL is a brilliant ending to a brilliant album.

It's hardly possible to not be excited about a new release by Butch Walker. This man is just so talented and he's not always getting the recognition he deserves. While he's a big name within the business, he's not the first name that comes to mind to a lot of people. Why not? would be my question. Because not only is he an exceptional songwriter, he also is a quality performer. "Sycamore Meadows" is another album that will only solidify Walker's name as a songwriter and musician and it will, without a doubt, gain him more recognition and airplay, which would be a good thing for Butch Walker, and a good thing for radio, as it can always use an injection of great music.

  • Music phases

    Ago 13 2008, 23h50 por jellyfrog23

I listened to a lot of music in high school in the 80's -- R.E.M., They Might Be Giants, The Icicle Works, Prefab Sprout, XTC, The Pogues, The Housemartins, The Colourfield, The Smiths, Men Without Hats, Ultravox... There was a guy in my crowd who would spend all his time at record stores picking out albums based on the track names and then he'd make cassettes for the rest of us (the early days of music sharing!). He found a lot of great stuff that way. And he probably listened to a lot of crap that the rest of us never heard.

Once I graduated and lost my source I wasn't really into music for about, oh, 20 years (rock music, that is -- I did develop an undying love of Broadway musicals during my 20's :D). And then, of course, I stumbled across Last.fm and could discover music for myself with no financial risk. Nice, that.

Over the last year at Last.fm I've noticed a few distinct phases I've gone through.

There was my starting-out phase, where I listened to all the big-name bands I'd heard of out in the world, like Muse, Linkin Park, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, and Travis.

Then I guess maybe I went through a little *ahem* emo phase, the less said about that the better.

And there was my British-bands-whose-names-start-with-"the" phase. The Coral, The Rifles, Maxïmo Park, The Courteneers, The Rakes, The Cribs, The Zutons, Dirty Pretty Things, The Kooks, Little Man Tate, Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, The Sunshine Underground... (okay, not all of them start with "the")

I also had an indie/folk-rock-bands-with-watery-names phase, which included Okkervil River, Shearwater, Great Lake Swimmers, and Midlake. Some bands in this phase with drier names were Crooked Fingers, Fleet Foxes, Flowers From the Man Who Shot Your Cousin, and Band of Horses.

Right now I seem to be in a guys-who-use-their-own-names phase. Um, also known as singer-songwriters. Josh Rouse, Denison Witmer, Ali Whitton, Terry Springford, Fionn Regan, Patrick Park, and Josh Ritter are current favorites.

There's been a bit of Scandinavian music (The Perishers, Kings of Convenience, The Whitest Boy Alive, Seabear), and after listening to bisa's library for a bit, I think I may have a Dutch phase next, starting with Johan and Solo. :)

Of course these phases are not consecutive and discrete; most of them are still going on, I just focus more on one thing than another at any given time. Further recommendations in any of these areas would be most welcome. What am I missing out on?

Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson debuts with his solo album "Free Life". With Semisonic there were some brilliant albums, so I was very curious as to what Wilson could cook up on his own.

    All Kinds
A laid-back pop/rock song that's easy to like. Nothing new, nothing to get out of your comfy chair for, but it does sound nice and Dan Wilson shows he's a gifted songwriter who can craft a clever pop song. Think of music like Snow Patrol, Patrick Park, Counting Crows, Death Cab for Cutie and mix it up a little.

    Free Life
The wonderfully composed title track reminds me a lot of contemporary Patrick Park. It has the same free singer/songwriter feel with the guitar plucking and strumming, and the brisky vocals. It's a genre that a lot of artists and bands venture in, but only a few excell in it. And Dan Wilson falls in that category.

    Breathless
Breathless has a nice piano melody and Dan Wilson proves to be a good singer. Lingering between the sound of his band Semisonic and Five for Fighting, maybe with a little Ben Folds thrown in, this song is actually quite catchy and has a nice drive.
The piano and vocals emphasize each other nicely and Breathless is a good listen.

    Baby Doll
When I was listening to Baby Doll something came to mind but I can't really pinpoint it. I'm not really sure about this song. I feel it's a good song, but on the other side it's not making me too excited. It has a brisky, gutsy, somewhat alternative melody and it carries along nicely, but I miss that little edge.

    Come Home Angel
For some reason I was expecting a Matt Nathanson-like song, but it sounds nothing like that.
Come Home Angel is a sweet song that reminds me of Saybia actually. It has the same feeling of catchiness without being really catchy. I always find these songs very cleverly composed. And Wilson's loose and lush vocals are perfect for this song.

    Sugar
I'm not the biggest fan of Sugar.
I really enjoy Dan Wilson's vocals but this song lacks something for me. Maybe if he'd add some piano and pick up the pace a little the song would have a little more body. I just kinda found the song too skinny/empty if you know what I mean.

    Cry
This song itself would justify a Dan Wilson-Ben Folds-Five For Fighting tour, and I'd buy a ticket. Like the two other acts, Dan Wilson brings the brisky, hopeful alternative pop/rock sound that so many people seem to enjoy.
I am definitely one of those people and the way he dressed Cry musically and lyrically makes it a song to come back to.

    Golden Girl
A more melancholic sound is to be heard on Golden Girl, kinda like David Poe does, but the song itself doesn't sound much like Poe. But it has the same haunting, melancholic feel.
The (semi-)acoustic guitar in this song puts nice little accents on some parts, and Golden Girl deserves credit for the way Dan Wilson has turned this song into something special.

    Against History
Against History has a good pace/groove. The uptempo-ness gives this song the necessary energy to keep on going. While the chorus is pretty good, the rest of the song is less strong. It's a fun song the first few listens, but after awhile it got a little boring to me. It lacks a little creativity and variety, which is something Dan Wilson is definitely capable of.

    Honey Please
I loved Honey Please from the first time I heard it. The playful, jazzy sound brings out this song perfectly. And Dan Wilson's vocals are crystal. At times it makes me think of Keane going jazzy but with better vocals.

    She Can't Help Me Now
She Can't Help Me Now has the rock & roll feel, somewhere in between John Fogerty & Ben Folds, and Dan Wilson can easily meet up with those standards. And trust me, that's meant as a compliment. Wilson, however, adds a more alternative edge to this song that works remarkably well and gives this song a little bit extra shine.

    Hand On My Heart

This is my favorite song off "Free Life" and I think it should be a radio hit. It has the potential. It's catchy, has a bit of a signature sound and can easily compete with Jack Johnson, Gavin DeGraw, John Mayer and other contemporaries on the radio. I can't help but singing along. Oh, another mention, listen to the drums and how they are holding up the foundation of the song in the background. Very good song.

    Easy Silence
Easy Silence is a nice tune, that also reminded me of Saybia a little. But more uplifting and with a different spirit. It has a nice piano melody guiding the vocals and the rhythmic section is subtle but important. A very good way to end this promising album.

"Free Life" is a good, solid solo debut for this singer/songwriter who's already proven himself with Semisonic.
With very good songs Hand On My Heart, She Can't Help Me Now, Free Life & Honey Please and more, Dan Wilson has also set his name as a solo artist. With good pop/rock tunes in tradition of Ben Folds, Five For Fighting, Andrew McMahon, Patrick Park and others but a sound of his own, this experienced musician shows he can easily adapt from the band sound to the solo sound. His clever songs deserve continuation and I, for one, am eager to hear his next album.

  • Easter weekend

    Mar 22 2008, 12h35 por safetygooner

Snow was heavy but never settled. This apparently the earliest easter in the calender since 1913... but even so, snow at easter. But if you're going to be stuck inside...

Finally emptied emusic account of the 50 free download tracks you get for signing up. Chose Felt, Stephanie Dosen, the first Midlake album Bamnan and Slivercork a few Pale Saints b sides from Comforts of Madness era and the boy convinced me to download Celldweller. He's responsible for Blink 182 being at the top of my favourite artists list (cheers for that, kid)

Now concentrating on all the free tracks emusic have and found a few label samplers worth checking out Icon and Dionysus. Particular discoveries include Patrick Park and Baby Mongoose who make me think that if they could one day do transplants of any body organ you like, I want Japanese ears please.

  • 2007, in 15 songs or less (and in no particular order)

    Jan 5 2008, 6h23 por cileero

    • Voxtrot – Soft and Warm
Overall, this band was a solid find of 2007. I bought their two EPs, and they just came out with their first LP, but I haven’t listened to it yet. Go to their artist page for 2 free downloads. On second thought, it's a tie between this one and TocarThe Start of Something
    • Sigur Rós – Hoppipolla
This song portrays an overwhelming sense of freedom, and the music video really adds to it (per usual with Sigur Rós). Go watch it. Now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDxMQaMqsig
    • Patrick Park – TocarSomething Pretty
Beautiful. And I’m a sucker for songs with orchestral accompaniment.
    • Spoon – TocarThe Way We Get By
*Shrugs* Nothing to add here really, but good song.
    • Sufjan Stevens - For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti
No matter what kind of a day I’ve had, this song always makes it slightly better. And I love the spirituality behind the lyrics.
    • Sufjan Stevens – The Dress Looks Nice on You
Yes, he gets two mentions, deal with it. “I can see a lot of life in you.”
    • Great Lake Swimmers – TocarVarious Stages
Another shrug but another good song. As you can tell, I am no eloquent music critic per se.
    • Tegan and Sara –Where Does the Good Go?
I really could have included any of their songs off So Jealous. I listened to that album a lot this year (which may have led to my disappointment with The Con.)
    • The Umbrella Sequence – TocarUrban Lull (At Once Charmed)
Obscure band out of Minnesota; they’re not that solid overall really, but this song is just so darn catchy. Go download it for free!
    http://www.last.fm/music/The+Umbrella+Sequence
    • Matt Nathanson – TocarAngel
I’ve enjoyed this song for awhile, it’s so short and simple in a beautiful way. After the VA Tech shooting, I somehow stumbled across the website of one of the victims, he was a musician, and there was a cover of this song on there. Listening to his version was oddly poignant.
    • Juli – TocarAnders
Fun song by a German band that I enjoy. They’re not necessarily the best, but fun, and somehow the novelty of the German lyrics makes up for what they may lack.
    • Stars – TocarYour Ex-Lover Is Dead
I’m also a sucker for songs with both male and female vocalists. (Just ignore the first 5 seconds of the song.)
    Another free download! http://www.last.fm/music/Stars/_/Your+Ex-Lover+Is+Dead
    • Imogen Heap – TocarHave You Got It in You?
Vaguely haunting and ethereal in a way that I enjoy.

And your bonus, post-2007 Songs of the Now:
    • Minus the Bear – When We Escape
Dream-like to just the right extent.
    • Beirut - Scenic World
    I adore his voice.

Because not all of my music is on my computer/iTunes, this list could probably be slightly improved, but oh well.

  • Der Herbst und der Country

    Out 14 2007, 22h40 por musicandcoffee

„If every I could love myself, I’d stop loving you...“
