Lately I've been reading a book called "The End of Food" which is a step by step account of the terrible things the food industry is doing to our food. Luckily it seems more informative than it is depressing at the moment. It has been keeping me entertained on those really early morning when I find myself wide awake and unable to sleep. Sometimes I get up and mosey around the net while I listen to music, or watch a few episodes of the Simpson's or I read. The other night I fell asleep shortly after work with some music on. I'd put on some
Parlour because I wanted something that wouldn't end up being too jarring, and I half expected an hour nap. Parlour is a post-rock and from the Temporary Residence label and something I picked up due to certain other bands on the same label. They're a lot heavier on the electronic, but they have some amazing stuff happening with the guitars ala gorgeous sound, yah know? I think I came two a couple hours later and my playlist was in the midst of a
Patrice Rushen album that I'm slowly growing to love. A friend recommended her to me saying her early stuff would kick my ass. This particular release is called
Preclusion and
Before the Dawn. The Preclusion half is fairly lamish comtemporary jazz/sould style music, but Before the Dawn kicks into some very cool jazz funk. This definitely isn't
Betty Davis, but it's worth getting to know. I woke up from that deep slumber half way through
Walkin' After Midnight and was a bit blown away by what I was hearing. It's certain that I've always appreciated
Patsy Cline's ability to croon, but in the background she has a band playing some amazingly hip stuff. Hear you could definitely hear where Rockabilly was getting some of it's raw charm. Still it's hard to match that powerful voice. I'll be moving this album up in the queue a lot more often now.
