Formada em 1981, a banda atingiu muito sucesso, até mesmo na segunda metade da década de 90 quando a popularidade do heavy metal começava a cair. Eles faziam metal moderno (ou o chamado “power-groove”, termo cunhado pela própria banda pois boa parte de suas músicas possuíam riffs “grudentos”). Isso fica especialmente evidente no álbum Vulgar Display of Power.
O Pantera lançou três discos (Metal Magic, de 1983, Projects In The Jungle, de 1984 e I Am The Night, de 1985) antes de demitir o então vocalista Terry Glaze para a entrada de Phil Anselmo no quarto disco, Power Metal, de 1988. Na época, Glaze teria sido informado sobre assinar com uma gravadora pertencente a Gene Simmons do KISS, mas Terry rejeitou o contrato e foi mandado embora. Os membros restantes encontraram Phil Anselmo em Nova Orleans e produziram Power Metal, uma gravação onde Phil regravou algumas canções cantadas originalmente por Glaze, além de algumas originais.
O primeiro álbum de sucesso comercial foi Cowboys From Hell, de 1990. Neste ponto, a música do Pantera ainda era fortemente influenciada por heavy metal clássico, com vocais ao estilo de Rob Halford do Judas Priest e riffs e solos mais complexos do guitarrista Dimebag Darrell, embora o álbum também tenha começado a demonstrar um estilo muito mais extremo do que os trabalhos anteriores.

who cares about your consideration anyway,their music is a big cultural effect in early 90's,o-kay i accept they've created Nu-Metal along with Sepultura,but you cant deny their sincerity and passion for acceptence by their community,some can say this makes them sellouts but that is a diffrent thing imho...yes they've regretted everything they created in 80's and start to compose in some kind of other attitude in 90's for success,but this does not make them sellouts since it came from their hearts,they were sincere,you cant see them in the way you see Metallica...

well you are right about that whole -world is not innocent anymore- thing...but this does not give you the right to bash innocence in example..i personally think that Dimebag was a good guitarist,his solo's an riffing is very good(well riffing stuff maybe ripped off,but i did not listen any Exhorder songs),but you cant just go and kill somebody who has a big and positive meaning for metal community...
