I'll do my best reissues and songs later, as well as an honorable mentions run-through, but here is my requisite best albums list for the year.

10) The Lodger - Life Is Sweet - Pure twee pop which would be very easy to dismiss as mere fluff, but so well written and performed that to do so would be a huge mistake. These guys obviously know their Orange Juice and Field Mice records, but they've made an album every bit as good as anything those storied acts put out.

9) Deerhunter - Microcastle - While the Lodger album lends itself to underrating (is that even a word?), this album does the opposite, impressing by its sheer ambition beyond the actual music contained. Nonetheless, this was a huge, though pleasant, surprise to me. I didn't care at all for their previous album, Cryptograms, which was a good sound in search of songs. Here, they found the tunes to go with their sonics, and they made an excellent record.

8) The Gutter Twins- Saturnalia - Mark Lanagan and Greg Dulli make an album together. That's enough for inclusion there, but they also put together a set of top-flight songs that perfectly suited their combined voices. No album I heard this year sounded as dirty as this one, which is exactly the point. Their EP release Adorata was also superb, with some great cover choices.

7) Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple - This album just did not get the kind of love it deserved, which likely stems from the fact there wasn't an instant classic like Crazy on here. Instead, there are bunch of simmering classics that get better and better upon repeated listening. Is it as good as their first album? Actually, it's better.

6) Portishead - Third - Worth every minute of the long wait. Different enough to not seem like a rehash, and similar enough to still have the same appeal. Quite a balancing act.

5) Darker My Love - 2 - An amazing album from this California band which is best recommended by its description - Nowhere-era Ride plays Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. If that sounds good to you, you'll like this album. If that doesn't appeal to you, what the hell is wrong with you?

4) Secret Shine - All of the Stars - Classic-era shoegazers reunite to release their best album. Simply gorgeous.

3) Spiritualized - Songs In A + E - While I wouldn't say this is Jason Pierce's best album, it's the one that feels the most personal and, for lack of a better term, songwritery. While the last few Spiritualized albums seemed to be more about creating a pre-determined sound, from the over-reaching orchestral flourishes of Let It Come Down to the "back to basics" garage rock of Amazing Grace, on Songs In A + E, Pierce is writing songs and then crafting sounds around them. The end result is an intimate, warm record that is endlessly replayable. Killer live show, too.

2) The Dirtbombs - We Have You Surrounded - Another near-perfect album from the best band in existence. It's kept out of the top spot by a few slightly weaker songs, even ignoring the noise freakout in the middle. On the other hand, it's by far the 2008 album I've listened to the most.

1) For Against - Shade Side Sunny Side - Another comeback album, this time from a Nebraska post-punk group that's been around since the early 80's. While their entire back catalog is well worth exploring, this album is their pinnacle so far, nine near-perfect songs that combine the best moments of early The Comsat Angels with Pale Saints-esque shoegaze, all bolstered by a killer rhythm section. Essential.
