  • Shit I liked in the year 2009. 2009 Edition.

    Dez 30 2009, 7h44 por CannibalCrepe

The new Isis is pretty fantastic. Saw that one coming. Sounds great on vinyl.

White Tomb is pretty great. I like that band.

Can't Maintain might be my favorite album of the year. Goddamn that was so good.

Blue Record is awesome. I don't fucking care what anyone says, that band has consistently put out great pieces of work. Saying they sound like radio rock is like saying Fugazi sounds like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. A bootleg of Baroness' performance at Roadburn from this year is floating around on the interwebs if you're interested. It's pretty great up until they start playingCoeur but then just suddenly kick into the end of "Rise" and finish. If they did that and I was seeing them live I would just flip.

Between the Buried and Me put out another record which I forgot to listen to. I bet it's good.

Unblessing The Purity by Bloodbath is fucking great. It's only an EP, unfortunately. I just love Bloodbath. They're one of a select group of modern Death Metal bands that actually really excites me. That shit just kills.

Swallow Your Teeth is another winner. The new songs were really killer live, too.

Gin is a really peculiar but impressive USBM album that deserves the hype it has been getting. That's another album on Profound Lore, which is currently putting out by far the best extreme metal albums lately.

Axe To Fall is just as intense, incomprehensible, and jaw dropping as one would expect a Converge album to be. I love how I can always count on the "what the fuck? that's just crazy" sensation to hit me when I come across new Converge material without fail.

He Is Never Coming Back came to me late in the year, finals to be precise, and preceded to knock me on my ass. Just the perfect mix of dissonant, abrasive, mathy Coalesce shit and savage grind with an incredible low end. That band is great. The production on this album reminds me so much of the open, huge sound of Interviews With David Frost.

Deconstruct is another incredible album. The female vocals add a lot, it's incredible fast and incredibly heavy. Words don't do it justice, truly. Check it out if you have not.

Buttsweat and Tears is another damn good release by one of my favorite damn bands, the Lawrence Arms. I should give that thing a few hundred more spins.

Black Eye Blues is a really captivating, dark album that came at me by surprise. I liked Lewd Acts okay when I saw them like a year ago but they didn't make an incredibly strong impression outside of how drunk the lead singer was and the bassist making sure that everyone at the show was respectful towards the women at the show that evening, which I appreciated. The album though, has such a manic desperation to it. It hits really deep, sort of similar to bands like Another Breath and Modern Life Is War. It sounds a little bit like Born Against, too, which is a plus.

MAGRUDERGRIND is just an incredible album. It could very possibly be my favorite grind album of all time. The new production has added so much body to the songs in a way that would have been impossible on the older shit, first of all. Secondly the new songs are just so much heavier. TocarBridge Burner, for example, is like being smashed vertically by a truck. Damn that album rules. I've had trouble revisiting the older Magrudergrind albums as a result of this one.

Paint It Black put out two 7"s this year. I loved "Amnesia". I never bothered to listen to "Surrender". That band never gets enough credit. That's all I'm going to say.

Collapse by my favorite USBM act, Panopticon, is stunning, expansive, mournful, beautiful, and crushing, typically all during the course of one song. That dude has been keeping pretty busy and evidently there are some splits cooked up for this coming calendar year. I await them.

Aw shit. Propagandhi put out a new album this year and I've hardly listened to it. Dumb.

Punch by Punch fucking rules and that band also rules. Enough said.

Shrinebuilder is as great as one would expect a Neurosis-Melvins-Sleep super group album to be.

Breathing The Fire is another album that deserves more attention from me. It's great, really.

Suffocation put out a new album this year and as the originators of that hyper-brutal/technical shit, it's only appropriate how massive the new album is. Maybe I'll see that band live some day, barring I don't get karate chopped in half by some nut ninja pitting or something.

Black Cascade may be the contender for my favorite record of the year after the new Jihad album. Not that I'm going on a qualitative scale or anything. I'm falling asleep as I speak. I could drift off into sleep listening to that album, which I have before many times. Yeah, that's a good measure of quality. Dreamability.

I'm sure I forgot some things. I still primarily listen to shit that sounds kind of similar fundamentally. I need to work on that. Next year.

I'd be really surprised if people read this...so if you do, comment and let me know.

    BEST ALBUMS
    10. mewithoutYou - it's all crazy! it's all false! it's all a dream! it's alright
In my opinion, Brother, Sister was a much better album. It's All Crazy just never seemed to have the passion of the last few. I was just waiting for the songs to pick up, but they never really did. The album grew on me after a while, but I never fell in love with it.

    9. The Glorious Unseen - The Hope That Lies In You
No sophomore slump here. The Glorious Unseen's follow-up to Tonight The Stars Speak holds some of the best new worship music I've heard recently. They stick to the formula previously set-up and really don't do anything out-of-the-ordinary or spectacular, but when you combine ambient indie/pop with worshipful lyrics, I dig it.

    8. P.O.S. - Never Better
Since I've been making these lists, I can say for sure that I've never included a hip-hop album in my "best-of" lists. I'm not a big fan of hip-hop, period. P.O.S. is different. He's innovative, catchy, immensely talented, and basically the man. A lot of people say he sounds like Eminem, but I can say that P.O.S.'s lyrical content is 100% better. I can't really describe why I got into Never Better, but I think it was all the little things; the "real-ness", the cool beats, and his punk rock humility that highlighted this good album.

    7. Frank Turner - Poetry Of The Deed
Having just gotten Frank Turner's first album, Love Ire & Song, getting his second album Poetry of the Deed wasn't high on my to-do list. But then I saw him open up for The Gaslight Anthem in Minneapolis and I knew I had to venture back to the merch table and pick it up. It was really cool to see that Frank was watching his own merch on such a big tour and it was great to talk to him. He told me "I hope our paths cross again" and I definitely agree. Pick up this album if you like folk rock, punk rock, english boys with banjos, sing-along anthems, or the acoustic guitar.

    6. As Cities Burn - Hell Or High Water
Goodbye, As Cities Burn. At least you put out an album before you called it quits. And it's a good one. Almost completely moving away from post-hardcore, Hell or High Water is an album of Cody Bonnette's strong lyrics and passionate vocals, but this time, coupled with bluesy and progressive rock.

    5. Deas Vail - Birds & Cages
This is an album full of beautiful pop music that does more to vary the songs than "All the Houses Look the Same". I'm still having a hard time figuring out the lyrics, but the every aspect of the music is perfect enough that I can take my time.

    4. Gasoline Heart - Nostalgia Ain't What It Used To Be
Man, Louis DeFabrizio is honest. Angry, sometimes depressed, and honest. I don't know if Gasoline Heart will ever release an album that rivals You Know Who You Are, but I really hope Louis keeps trying. This album is getting there. I honestly think he is the most untalented musicians who still writes great songs. Rock and roll, etc.

    3. Quiet Science - He Calls Me Diamonds
I've been following this band since they were (more or less) A Denver Mile and this album (maybe it's just an EP) is the best thing they've released. Quiet Science's sweepy, poetic, Floridian take on britpop will get them far. Check them out if you like Sleeping At Last, The Myriad, or Future of Forestry.

    2. Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything To Nothing
I almost chose this as my #1. Attempting to sound like an album reviewer, I'll call this urgent, yowling indie rock. They've perfected the stripped down sound while their songs remain complex and dynamic. I can't wait til they come through Iowa again on a headlining tour.

    1. The Swellers - Ups and Downsizing
Woooo! Their second album + my first time hearing them = love at first listen. I wouldn't have gotten this unless they put all the songs up on myspace. Every songs on here is good, most are great. I haven't heard such a well-done pop-punk/rock album in a loooooong time. Get it, or at least check them out. My #1 band to see live right now.

    Honorable Mentions
    Dear Landlord - Dream Homes
Bomb the Music Industry! - Scrambles
Austin Lucas - Somebody Loves You

    EPs
There were a lot of awesome EPs released this year. So I'll go top ten.

  • Thirty Questions About My Top Thirty

    Dez 2 2009, 1h09 por unicornographer

    1. How did you get into 29?
Off With Their Heads: Hating and wanting to strangle the life from everything and everyone.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Samiam: Either Sunshine or She Found You. It was a long-ass time ago.

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
The Copyrights: Depends on how far you're willing to stretch your definition of "own." Physically? None. But I "have" four full-lengths, two splits and two EPs.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
Dillinger Four: I don't think a true D4 fan~ could possibly pick a favorite song. Everything they do is phenomenal but The Classical Arrangement, Like Sprewells on a Wheelchair and Are You The Motherfucker With The Banana? are especially bonerrific.

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
Latterman: TocarMy Bedroom Is Like For Artists

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Hot Water Music: So many. Trusty Chords is such a cliche answer, but it's true (now for other reasons as well haha). Driving Home is my favorite HWM song and has never failed to pick me up when I'm in the mood to kill everyone and then myself. Giver, Drunken Third and Choked and Separated are also great anti-depressants.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Andrew Jackson Jihad: Unfair question. Little Prince (El Principito), Self Esteem, TocarPeople II: The Reckoning and Fly My Ass are all perfect.

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
    A Wilhelm Scream: http://i46.tinypic.com/2dhsieh.gif

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Paint It Black: But of course. TocarMemorial Day, TocarPast Tense, Future Perfect, TocarWomb Envy and TocarShell Game Redux.

    10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
Cobra Skulls: Twice, actually. Devin loves me!

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?
Banner Pilot: Does Pass the Poison count? If I have to pick a full-length, definitely Resignation Day.

    13. What is your favorite song by 1?
The Lawrence Arms: TocarThe Disaster March. Duh.

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Alkaline Trio: Also twice. Skeebs looked like a gay nazi both times.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Smoke or Fire: Seeing them live in Santa Cruz this past February was pretty rad.

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?
Shorebirds: Tinctures Are 90% Alcohol is the favorite but Bubz Song and the movie is almost over are magnificent.

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Nothington: They're both really really good. I guess the last few songs on All In are pretty forgettable, so I'll give the edge to Roads, Bridges, and Ruins.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?
Shook Ones: Goddamnit. Order Form definitely has some of their best lyrics, but the new album is SO GOOD. Birds On Ice and For Flannel are both the tits.

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
The Replacements: I have no idea. Skyway, maybe? Bastards of Young? Not a clue.

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?
None More Black: You can't make me choose! I probably listen to File Under Black a little more but This Is Satire is so insanely perfect. Yeah, yeah that doesn't really answer the question. Fuck you.

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?
The Weakerthans: Fffffuuuu. Left & Leaving, TocarConfessions of a Futon-Revolutionist, Aside, TocarThis Is a Fire Door Never Leave Open, Tournament of Hearts, both Virtute songs, TocarFallow dfjas;dfklj; I CANT PICK.

    22. What is you favorite song by 8?
Kid Dynamite: Oh for fuck's sake. Does "the entire S/T" count? I usually say Heart A Tact is my favorite, but K05-0564 is one of the best songs ever written and I've been really into S.O.S. lately and I have the biggest boner for Wrist Rocket, 3 O'clock, Fuckuturn and Bookworm. Seriously, an endless supply of handjobs to anyone who can make this band get back together.

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
The Riot Before: They're near the top of the (lengthy) list of bands I want to see live super badly but they've eluded me twice already. :(

    24. What is the worst song by 12?
American Steel: Probably something off Jagged Thoughts. I will never understand why everyone shits their ass over that album as it's clearly the weakest.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Gunmoll: Less Than You Hoped For

    26. What is you favorite album by 7?
Jawbreaker: 24 Hour Revenge Therapy obviously.

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?
The Measure (SA): TocarRoof Beers, Hit The Ground Running and union pool are all fantastic.

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Lifetime: The Verona Kings and Yeems Song For Nothing are super fun and catchy. I don't know, most of my favorite Lifetime songs (read: the entirety of Jersey's Best Dancers) are pretty damn depressing.

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?
Propagandhi: I've loved them forever, but Supporting Caste seriously is their best work yet. You could probably pick any of their five albums and get away with it being your favorite though. They're the best.

    30. How many albums do you own by 20?
Descendents: I think I still have Everything Sucks and Cool to Be You on CD from back in the day. I obviously have everything they've done on my computer.

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Shorebirds: Remember that time they promised to tour and Rocko was going to pay for us to go down to Seattle and shit for my birthday to see them and then the dirty rotten bastards decided it was "just time for them to not be a band anymore" and I flipped a tit and wanted to punch them all in the everything? They broke my heart.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?

  • Oh dear...ceremony...

    Set 26 2009, 17h08 por weeblsdonkey

Thu 24 Sep – Paint It Black, Ceremony, Crazy Arm, Youth Gone Wrong

Im not going to take the time to review this properly...instead I'll just say it how it was and then go and eat my dinner.

Rat Attack - Pretty damn good, musically tight, lacked variety.
Crazy Arm- The highlight of the evening, incredible, tight, individual and going far.
    Ceremony - Just...Why?
Paint it Black - Excellent energy, terrifying lead vocalist, generally amazing.

There we are! That's how the evening played out for me anyway. It'd be cool to see if anyone agrees.
