Keith Emerson Band: s/t (2008)
Keith Emersonin paluu ELP-tyyppisen musiikin pariin. Apunaan Emersonilla on hieman nuorempi Marc Bonilla joka on kohtuullisen taitava kitaristi, mutta ennen kaikkea loistava laulaja kuulostaen yllättävän samalta kuin Greg Lake parhaina päivinään. Vaikka Bonilla äänestä puuttuukin se majesteettinen ylimielisyys johon vain britti voi pystyä. Osa kappaleista on Bonilla ja Emersonin yhdessä säveltämiä osa merkitty vain Emersonin tai Bonillan nimiin. Luultavasti Bonillan vaikutuksesta perinteisten ELP-piirteiden lisäksi musiikissa on mukana myös hieman aor-sävyjä. Ei kuitenkaan liian häiritsevästi. Valtaosan levystä vielä noin kolmikymmenen minuuttinen kokonaisuus joka on jaettu 15 osaan. Lisäksi levyllä on mukana ELP:lle tyypillisesti yksi sovitus klassisen musiikin puolelta (Ginasteran Malambo, yksi Emersonin parhaita sovituksia) sekä humoristinen kapakkapieno-kipale. Sävellykset ovat laadukkaita, mutta hieman jäin kyllä kaipaamaan sitä kunnon over-the-top-meininkiä josta ELP:tä aikoinaan eniten ihailtiin (tai vihattiin). Rummuissa on pätevä kaveri Gregg Bissonette, mutta silti jäin kaipaamaan hieman Carl Palmerin intensiivisyyttä ja energisyyttä. Suurin ero klassisiin ELP:n levyihin tässä syntyy siitä että koskettimet ovat enemmän tasapuolisesti osana bändiä eikä dominoi niin selkeästi pääosassa koska Bonillan kitaroinnilla on myös niin keskeinen rooli. Toki myös Emersonin soitto on hillitympää, ehkä käsivamma haittaa hieman vieläkin tai sitten kyseessä on vain iän tuoma "kypsyys" (buu!). Kaikenkaikkiaan tämä on yksi vuoden parhaista proge-levyistä ja hieno suoritus vanhan kaartin Keith Emersonilta.

Overhead: And We're Not Here After All (2008)
Ihan kivaa, mutta hieman persoonatonta suomalaista perusprogea ripauksella psykedeliaa. Tämä kolmas ja tuorein levy on kuitenkin bändin vahvin toistaiseksi eli eteenpäin ollaan menossa.

Kuusumun Profeetta: Lyhtykuja (2008)
Elektronisin ja samalla myös progein Kuusumun levy. Ja saattaa olla myös paras. Raivon ruhtinaat on loistava biisi.

Anekdoten: Vemod (1993)
Lopultakin tuli hommattua tämä Anekdotenin debyytti hyllyyn bändin muiden levyjen joukkoon. Levy on myöhempää tuotantoa aggressiivisempaa ja kulmikkaampaa. King Crimsonin Red-levyähän tässä selkeästi kanavoidaan vaikkei toki samalle tasolle ylletäkään. Mukava levy silti. Mellotron pauhaa hienosti ja basso soi voimakkaasti pinnassa.

Genesis: 1970-1975 (7sacd+6dvd box, 2008)
Gabriel-ajan levyt (miinus debyytti) remasteroituina ja remiksattuina. SACD-versiot kuulostavat hienolta vaikka välillä soivatkin hieman liian "kovaa". Mukava haastatteluita ja mahtavaa kuvamateriaalia aikakauden konserteista.

Martin Orford: The Old Road (2008)
Miellyttävää ja kaikin puolin pätevää neoprogea vaan ei myöskään mitenkään erityisen päräyttävää. Välillä musiikki kuulostaa yllättävän paljon IQ:n ja Asian sekoitukselta. Ja miksipä ei kun Martin Orford on bändin kosketinsoittaja ja John Wetton Asiasta laulaa ja bassottelee muutamassa biisissä. Wetton on muuten laulajana levyllä yllättävän kovassa iskussa. Nick D'Virgilio ja Dave Meros Spock' Beardista muodostavat levyn vahvan rytmiryhmän. Orford on muuten ilmoittautunut vetäytyvänsä musiikkibisneksestä tämän levyn myötä kyllystyttyään internet-piratismiin ja sen myötä yleisesti vallitsevaan "ilmaisen musiikin kulttuuriin".

The Alan Parsons Project: Turn Of Friendly Card (1980, 2007 remaster)
Parhaasta päästä Alan Parsonsin levyistä. Paljon hyviä melodioita ja napakat soundit. Orkestroinnit menevät vähän yli ja osassa kappaleista on vähän liian selkeää diskomeininkiä. Turn Of A Friendly Card Part 1 on upea biisi ja juuri sellainen joissa APP on parhaimmillaan, mutta sinfoniaorkesterin kera vedetty kakkososa on sitten jo aika korni.

Tangerine Dream: Force Majeure (1979)
Tällä levyllään TD kuulostaa enemmän perusprogelta kuin koskaan. Rummut ja kitara ja ylipäätänsä sooloilu ovat keskeisemmässä roolissa kuin yleensä. Ihan onnistunut sinfonisen progen ja bändin oman tyylin hybridi.

Öööö no tähän tulee nyt ne, jotka muistan. Eiköhän tossa oo melkein kaikki.

Auch wenn ich kein Naturwissenschaftler bin, ist mir der Begriff der Entropie nicht ganz fremd. Das liegt wohl vor allem daran, daß ich mich mit Wissenschafts- und Erkenntnistheorie befasse, jedenfalls dann, wenn ich Zeit dafür finde bzw. mir Zeit dafür nehme.

Nachdem ich das Album von Overhead das erste mal gehört hatte, bekam der oben zitierte Liedtext sofort besondere Aufmerksamkeit von mir. Er spielt auf die unablässige Entropiezunahme und den daraus resultierenden (vermuteten) Wärmetod des Universums an. Alles was unter Mühen erreicht und geschaffen wird, zerfällt sowieso wieder. Was schlußendlich bleibt ist Unordnung. Dieser, auf den ersten Blick negative Sachverhalt, kann jedoch in etwas Positives umgemünzt werden. Gerade aufgrund des Wissens, daß alles zwangsläufig vergänglich ist, kann man gelassener mit dem Leben umgehen.

Der Liedtext erinnerte mich an eine interessante Interpretation der Entropie, die ich mal in einer erkenntnistheoretischen Abhandlung gefunden habe. Diese Interpretation folgt dem gleichen Ansatz wie Overhead in ihrem Lied. Aber erst mal eine kurze Information dazu, was Entropie überhaupt ist.


Entropie?
Die einfachste Umschreibung des Begriffs Entropie, die sich auch aus dem Liedtext ergibt, ist die der Unordnung, die im Universum nur zunehmen kann. Aha. Um den Begriff etwas greifbarer zu machen, muß man wohl etwas ausholen.

Der Begriff der Entropie entstammt dem Gebiet der Thermodynamik. Die Thermodynamik befaßt sich mit thermodynamischen Systemen, also Systemen mit einer großen Anzahl von Teilchen. Unser Universum ist solch ein thermodynamisches System.
Eine grundlegende Größe zur Beschreibung von Vorgängen in thermodynamischen Systemen ist die der Energie, z.B. in Form von Wärme.
Bei Versuchen zu Wärmeübertragungen stellte man fest, daß Wärme immer vom wärmeren System auf das kältere System übergeht. Ein umgekehrter Austauschprozeß findet niemals statt (zumindest wurde er bisher noch nie beobachtet). Um diesen Sachverhalt zu beschreiben, führte der deutsche Physiker Rudolf Clausius die Entropie als abstrakte Hilfsgröße ein. An dieser Stelle wäre eigentlich etwas Formalismus in Form von Differentialgleichungen angebracht, ich will jedoch nicht zu weit ausholen. Wer sich dafür interessiert, findet im Netz sicherlich Informationsmaterial (siehe dazu z.B. die „Gibbssche Fundamentalgleichung“).
Die Entropie kann als ein Maß für die Nichtverfügbarkeit von Energie in einem abgeschlossenen System verstanden werden. Diese Nichtverfügbarkeit nimmt in einem solchen System niemals ab, oder anders herum formuliert, die Verfügbarkeit von Energie nimmt in einem solchen System niemals zu.
Ein anderer Physiker, Ludwig Boltzmann, stellte schließlich einen Zusammenhang zwischen der Entropie eines Systems und der Wahrscheinlichkeit der Zustände in diesem System her. Zum Verständnis kann auch hier der Vorgang der Wärmeübertragung herangezogen werden. Angenommen, ein heißer Gegenstand kühlt sich langsam ab, bedeutet dies, daß die vorher in diesem Gegenstand konzentrierte Energie sich im ganzen System verteilt. Die vorher vorhandenen Ordnung, die durch eine Aufteilung des Systems in einen Bereich mit hoher Energie und einen Bereich mit geringer Energie umschrieben werden kann, wird durch einen Zustand mit größerer Unordnung ersetzt, in dem die Energie im ganzen System verteilt ist, sich also nicht mehr auf einen bestimmten Bereich konzentriert. Man könnte es auch so formulieren, daß man sagt, ein abgeschlossenes System entwickelt sich immer von einem weniger wahrscheinlichen Zustand (Ordnung) zu einem wahrscheinlicheren Zustand (Unordnung).

Nach heutigem Kenntnisstand ist unser Universum ein abgeschlossenes System, d.h. ein System das eine bestimmte Menge von Energie enthält. Diese Energie kann innerhalb des Systems weder erzeugt, noch vernichtet werden, sie bleibt konstant (1. Hauptsatz der Thermodynamik). Eine Veränderung der Menge an Energie wäre nur dann möglich wenn dem System von außen Energie zugefügt würde, oder nach außen abfließt. Beides scheint nicht der Fall zu sein.
Der Entropie-Satz besagt schließlich, daß sich die Entropie innerhalb eines geschlossenen Systems niemals verringern kann, ein abgeschlossenes System entwickelt sich immer von der Ordnung zur Unordnung (2. Hauptsatz der Thermodynamik).


Mann könnte den Urknall als Punkt maximaler Ordnung umschreiben, die Energie des Universums war auf einen Punkt konzentriert. Die folgende Ausdehnung des Universums ist ein ständiges Verteilen der Energie, also eine ständige Zunahme der Unordnung, respektive eine ständige Zunahme von Entropie.

An dieser Stelle sein erwähnt, daß Entropie innerhalb des Systems lokal natürlich verringert werden kann. Wäre dies nicht so, gäbe es kein Leben und ich wäre nicht dazu in der Lage, diesen Text zu formulieren. Jede lokale Verringerung der Entropie wird aber dadurch erkauft, daß die Entropie insgesamt zunimmt.
Dadurch beispielsweise, daß ich diesen Text formuliere, schaffe ich lokal eine Form von Ordnung durch die im Text hinterlegte Information. Diese Ordnung zu schaffen ist mir nur dadurch möglich, daß ich nachdenke, dieses Nachdenken in Bewegung der Muskeln umsetze, um die Zeilen zu tippen, einen Maschine zur Datenverarbeitung betreibe, einen Server benutze, um diese Information zu übertragen und vieles mehr. Alle diese Vorgänge erzeugen abstrahlende Wärmeenergie, die sich unkontrolliert verteilt und damit die Unordnung im Universum insgesamt erhöht.


Schlußfolgerung
Man könnte sich jetzt auf den Standpunkt stellen, daß es keinen Sinn macht irgend etwas zu schaffen bzw. zu erschaffen, da es sowieso nicht von wirklicher Dauer ist. Das wäre aber ein Trugschluß. Abgesehen davon, daß wir uns der naturwissenschaftlichen Konzepte nicht in der Form sicher sein können, daß deren Inhalte unumstößlich richtig sind, gibt es von dieser Problematik unabhängig noch eine zweite Seite zu beachten.
Wenn wir tatsächlich etwas schaffen, das von späteren Generationen als erhaltenswert erachtet wird, werden diese dafür sorgen, daß es nicht vergeht. Gleichzeitig können wir aber auch davon ausgehen, daß aufgrund der Entropie Dinge, die nicht als erhaltenswert erachtet werden bzw. die nicht erhaltenswert sind, früher oder später wieder vergehen.

„Zeit heilt Wunden“ ist ein bekanntes Sprichwort. Der Entropie-Satz ist gewissermaßen das materielle Derivat davon. So wie wir unser individuelles Leben durch Vergessen (und anders Wieder-Erinnern) immer neu schreiben, so garantiert der Entropie-Satz sozusagen das „Vergessen“ der Materie, weil alles künstlich (durch menschliches Handeln) Aufgebaute wieder zerfällt. Damit haben wir bei unseren Entscheidungen die Verantwortung für das Resultat, aber nicht für alle Zeiten, sondern nur für die von uns überschaubare Zeitspanne.

Absoluuttinen Nollapiste: Iiris (2007)
Yllättävän köyhä levy Absolta. Ei ilmeisesti bändiä enää paljoa kiinnosta, kunhan virkamiesmäisellä asenteella väännetään joka toinen vuosi jonkinlainen levy markkinoille. Pari edellistä levyä eivät paljoa kiinnostaneet, mutta tämä on jo aikamoinen pohjanoteeraus. Ei yhtään erityisen onnistunutta biisiä, sanoituksissa ei ole mitään mielenkiintoista ja osa on jopa hävettävän kömpelöä lätinää. Sounditkin on omituisen muovista kopinaa.

Béla Bartók : Concerto For Orchestra/Music For Strings, Percussion & Celesta (2001)
Sir Andrew Davisin ja Jukka-Pekka Sarasteen johtamana. Hieno musiikkia, mutta odotin kaiken Bartókista lukemani perusteella että tämä olisi ollut vähän radikaalimman kuuloista. Ehkä yli 60-vuotta sitten sävelletyn musiikin on vaan vaikea "järkyttää" etenkin jos on sekoittanut päätään aktiivisesti avant-progella.

Camel: Breathless (1978)
Melkoisen laimea Camel-levy. Bändin kehnoin 70-luvulta. On tässä kuitenkin paikoin ihan hienoa soittoa ja etenkin Richard Sinclairin bassottelu miellyttää.

Asia: Alpha (1983)
Ensimmäinen Asian levy on omassa melko nolossa genressään (AOR) varsin onnistunut tapaus. Tiukasti soitettua mahtipontista rokkia hyvillä kertosäkeillä. Valitettavasti bändin alamäki alkoi jo varsin jyrkkänä tämän toisen levyn myötä. Meno on velttoa ja biisit ärsyttävän sokerisia, jopa soundit ovat huonommat vaikka Mike Stone on yhä tuottajana. Bändissä on Steve Howen ja Carl Palmerin kaltaiset virtuoosit, mutta eipä se lopputuloksessa juuri kuulu. Etenkin Palmer on kuin varjo itsestään tasaista komppia hakatessaan. Wetton nyt ei UK:n jälkeen ole vaivautunut soittamaan bassolla mitään mielenkiintoista. Levyn alkupuolisko on aivan elotonta skeidaa, mutta onneksi loppupuolella on sentään muutama siedettävä raita.

Caravan: s/t (1968)
Caravanin parhaat ajat olivat vielä edessä, mutta onhan tämä silti oikein komeaa psykedeelistä rokkia/protoprogea.

The Orb: U.F.Orb (1992)
Todella tylsää hippiambientia. Liian hapokasta, ei pysty.

10cc: Deceptive Bends (1977)
Ihan kivaa 70-luvun poppia, mutta ei nyt ehkä ihan mun juttu. Mikäs näiden paras levy on?

The Tangent: Not As Good As The Book 2CD (2008)
Jälleen mainio levy The Tangentilta. Kokonaisuutena ei ylletä ehkä ihan edellisen levyn tasolle, mutta toisaalta kakkoslevyn pari kaksikymmentä minuttista eeposta saattavat hyvinkin olla parasta musiikkia bändiltä toistaiseksi. Levyn mukana tulee n. 100 sivuinen sci-fi-novelli jossa proge on hyvin keskeisessä roolissa (Yesin levy aiheuttaa maailman lopun...). Ihan hauskaa luettavaa.

Univers Zero: Heatwave (1987)
Ei ihan niitä parhaita UZ-levyjä. 20 minuuttisen The Funeral Plainin loppupuolisko on kyllä mahtava. Kokonaisuutena levy on vähän liian hillitty.

Talk Talk: Laughing Stock (1991)
Talk Talk jatkoi tällä levyllä entistä syvemmälle taidemusiikin suuntaan Spirit Of Edenin viitoittamalla tiellä. Akustista ja vähäeleistä minimalismia toteutettuna suurella ja monopuolisella intsrumenttivalikoimalla. Luultavasti lähinnä vielä vähäisestä kuuntelumäärästä johtuen tämä ei ole kolahtanut vielä aivan yhtä paljon kuin mahtava Spirit Of Eden.

Frank Zappa: Waka/Jawaka (1972)
Pari pitkää, varsin mainiota biisiä Zappan omaperäistä fuusiojazzia ja välissä kaksi kevyempää raitaa. Periaatteessa hemmetin miellyttävää musiikkia, mutta jotenkin tästä ei jaksa täysillä innostua. Ehkä vähän munatonta ja sielutonta musiikkia. No ainakin tältä levyltä puuttuu se sietämätön huumoripaska jota Zappa usein viljelee. The Grand Wazoo on samankaltainen levy, mutta pidän siitä kyllä enemmän.

The Alan Parsons Project: Eye In The Sky (1982) (2007 remaster)
Hyvää pop-levy vaikka mukaan on pari ankeampaakin raitaa mahtunut. Silence And I on sen sijaan yksi TAPP:n parhaista biiseistä. Täydellinen yhdistelmä mahtipontisuutta ja melankoliaa.

David Gilmour: Remember That Night - Live at the Royal Albert Hall DVD (2007)
Teknisesti huippuluokkaa ja muutenkin vaikuttaa hyvältä, mutta runsaat puolet konsertista ja kaikki extrat ovat vielä katsomatta.

Mike Oldfield: Music Of The Spheres (2008)
Puolivillaisten elektronica-räpellysten jälkeen Oldfield on tehnyt täyskäännöksen ja säveltänyt ensimmäisen täyden albuminsa orkesterimusiikkia. Lopputuloksena on odotetusti parasta Oldfieldia vuosiin. Lopputulos ei ole erityisen omaperäistä orkesterimusiikkia vaan mieleen tulee usein Hollywood-elokuvamusiikki. Sävellykset ovat kuitenkin todella kauniita, emotionaalisia ja kaikenkaikkiaan hyvin oldfieldmaisia vaikka toteutus tapa onkin aivan toinen kuin Oldfieldin normaaleissa yhden-miehen-orkesterilevyissä. Oldfield itse soittaa levyllä akustista kitaraa vain muutaman lyhyen pätkän. Oldfieldin sävellykset on orkestroinut Karl Jenkins, entinen Soft Machinen muusiikko, mutta sittemmin paremmin tunnettu Adiemuksesta. Jenkinsin sovitukset ovat toimivia, melko simppeleitä ja pelkistettyjä mikä parhaimmillaan luo jopa Philip Glass tunnelmaa (tätä korostaa toki Oldfieldin mieltymys Glassin tavoin musiikillisten teemojen lähes hypnoottiseen toistoon), mutta heikoimmillaan tuntuu hieman liian viihteelliseltä tai helpolta. Negatiivisin asia levyllä on kuitenkin aivan puhtaasti Oldfieldin omaa syytä. Tälläkään kertaa hän ei ole nimittäin malttanut pysyä erossa Tubular Bellsistä vaan sen pääteemaa varioidaan pariinkin otteeseen. Levyllä vierailee pari klassisen musiikin supertähteä, sopraano Hayley Westenra ja pianisti Lang Lang. Toivottavasti Oldfield jatkaa säveltäjänä orkesterimusiikin parissa. Tosin ilman Tubular Bellsia ja ehkä rohkeammin kokeilevalla linjalla.

Peter Hammill: Sitting Targets (1981) (2007 remaster)
Loistavia biisejä tälläkin Hammill-levyllä. Kaipa ne kaikki 40+ on kerättävä. Kolmisenkymmentä taitaa vielä puuttua omasta hyllystä...

Van der Graaf Generator: Trisector (2008)
Toinen VdGG levy sitten 2005 tapahtuneen paluun pitkän tauon jälkeen. Nyt bändi on kutistunut varsin kummalliseksi trioksi fonisti David Jacksonin saatua kenkää porukasta. Formaattina on rummut, koskettimet ja kitara. Asia mutkistaa entisestään se että vaikka bändin kaksi muuta jäsentä ovat virtuuoseja niin monet eivät tahtoisi edes kutsua Peter Hammillia kitaristiksi. Ja eihän Hammill kummoinen soittaja ainakaan proge-standardeilla ole, mutta ihan mukavaa meteliä hän saa aikaiseksi. Vaikka Jaxon jättikin suuren aukon niin erityisesti Hugh Banton tekee koskettimissa loistavaa työtä täyttääkseen sen. Ehkä juuri koskettimien kasvaneen roolin ansiosta Trisector kuulostaa hieman progemmalta kuin edellinen levy. Tämä ei ole kuitenkaan koko totuus koska toisaalta levyllä on monta huomattavan yksinkertaista biisiä. Vastapainoksi löytyy kuitenkin muutama kunnon progeralli jotka ovat selkeästi monimutkaisempaa matskua kuin mikään Presentiltä. Kaikenkaikkiaan nämä kaksi viimeisintä levyä ovat aika tasavahvoja tapauksia vaikka Trisector ainakin juuri nyt tuntuu aavistuksen mielenkiintoisemmalta. Hyvää musiikkia veteraaniyhtyeeltä vaikkei 70-luvun kovimmille suorituksille pärjätäkään. Hammill laulaa erittäin hyvin, mutta vähän enemmän purevuutta ja draamaa ääneen olisi kaivannut. Ulkopuolinen tuottaja olisi myös ollut paikallaan. Pieni annos moderniutta soundeihin ei olisi tehnyt pahaa. Nyt levy kuulostaa kauniisti sanottuna livemäiseltä ja rumasti sanottuna demomaiselta. Aivan kuten edeltäjänsä Presentkin. Niin ja levyn kansi on aivan kammottavan näköinen. Ei perkele jotain rajaa. Sisäkansissa olevaa liitutaulu-teemaa kehittämällä olisi syntynyt varmasti paljon mielenkiintoisempi ja tyylikkäämpi kansi.

After Crying: Megalázottak és megszomorítottak (1992)
Tämän unkarilaisen bändin musiikki on lähempänä klassistamusiikkia (kamarimusiikkia?) kuin varsinaista progea. Eikä tätä rokiksi voi kutsu mitenkään. Hienoa hidasta kehittelyä, minimalismia ja toisaalta myös oikein rikasta äänimaisemaa. Erityisesti levyn aloittava 22 minuuttinen eepos on aivan loistava.

Overhead: Zumanthum (2002)
Overhead: Metaepitome (2005)
Ihan mukavaa musiikkia nuorelta kotimaiselta progebändiltä. Overhead tasapainoilee jossain neoprogen ja retroilun ja toisaalta sinfonisen progen ja avaruusrockin välimaastossa. Taitavasta soitosta ja monista ihan hienoista hetkistä huolimatta se jokin viimeinen kipinä kuitenkin puuttuu joka tekisi yhtyeen musiikista todella omaperäistä ja innostavaa. Ehkäpä seuraavalla levyllä (tulossa kai tänä vuonna?).

The summer here in Sweden is almost over and it is time to focus on music again.

TRETTIOÅRIGA KRIGET has been creative in the studio and recorded a new fantastic album called I BÖRJAN OCH SLUTET.
