  • The Big Surprise Tour - the review

    Ago 10 2009, 16h14 por ACKthehack

    Virginia is pretty country.

For me to go to Charlottelsville it means me rolling by the Manassas Battlefield and past empty pastures with trees stuck in the background grain elevators huge rotting with the roofs missing. I whizz by cows munching on grass in the shade and a pretty lady riding a horse in a field so green it was like a scene out of a movie. Hell, she needed background music, something operatic. There was a moment where everything along the road had the words Blue Ridge in their name and I look up at a horizon above the trees and there is this blue gray outline of tall hills in the distance coming toward me that for a second just stopped my head cold.

And it was the South let me tell you right now from someone who knows. I went by two BBQ joints, a truck stop and a gun shop before I got an hour from my house. For some reason, there were also lots and lots of houses with Antique shop signs. Most of these places were closed down or run down or just broken up but it seemed that some were still going on old chairs and knick knacks sitting in front of a dirt "parking lot" where someone's humble abode used to sit.

It made me realize this kind of country ain't my world anymore but I still appreciate it just the same. That is when I rolled into a little college town called Charlottesville and began to circle the Pavillon four or five times before I figured out where the flying fuck I was supposed to park. So it did not take long to figure at least 25% of the crowd came for one reason and one reason only to see Old Crow Medicine Show which is fine except for the occasional drunk good old boy going on with "Play Wagonwheel!"

It was a pretty odd crowd with true country boy wearing Willie Nelson t-shirts, bluegrass fans wanting to see Gillian Welch with big belt buckles that explicitly note the word "Bluegrass" in case there was any doubt and alt country fans with Bottle Rockets going on about The Felice Brothers. Then there was some college kid with a Poetry as discourse book hanging out of his man-purse. Oh yeah and the obligatory pretty girl puking into a trash can. A sight that is always hard to get out of your mind.

First thing that happened was the whole damn crew came out and played a couple of tunes to open including the The Felice Brothers track the "Big Surprise" which inspired the name of the tour. This got everyone riled up pretty good. That is when Justin Townes Earle took the stage as the first artist of the night.

Maybe it was just because I was really looking forward to hearing Mr. Earle but it felt like he did a pretty short set. He was wearing this long sleeved button-down dress shirt with a bow tie which made for this semi-nerdy kind of old timey feel. Oh he paid for that in the 90+ degrees August Virginia weather. He was wiping sweat from his eyes and having to really work it to keep everything together. He really ripped up "South Georgia Sugar Babe" and I really enjoyed his take on "Mamma's Eyes". He intro'ed it appropriately saying every artist needed to have a song talking about their mamma.

The guy who works with him on the mandolin and the harmonica really rocks too. I have no idea who this guy is but he is good. They did this chugga-chugga railroad sound song called "Halfway to Jackson" I believe and they both tore it the hell up.

The next artist up was The Felice Brothers they generated a ton of excitement with a lot of the alt. country portion of the crowd getting up and going hard for this band. They were the only artists to employ both electric guitars and organs in their sound. It is really an odd combo of sounds with both folky elements and rocking aspects kind of like early electric Bob Dylan. Honestly I had a hard time getting into them because their singer has this Dylanesque gruff singing voice that kept throwing me curves as I tried to get into their sound. I am not saying they were not a great band. I am not saying they were not great live. I am just saying for some reason I personally could not get into them.

Ok, after that there was a pretty long intermission. This was a period consisting of me wandering around noticing just how many people brought their really really young kids. I could not imagine trying to pull this off at a show lasting till 11pm. There were a lot of kids on the grass sleeping during the final portions of the concert I can tell you that right now.

There was this one baby covered in sweat in a stroller sleeping that I kind of felt sorry for frankly. My wife and kids? I left them at home if the trip had not been so long I would have considering bring my 12 yr old son as it would have made a good first concert.

After the intermission the David Rawlings Machine which was really just David Rawlings and Gillian Welch took the stage. I think this environment gave Mr Rawlings more wiggle room to really go wild on the guitar. It seemed that even during subdued songs he was taking long guitar breaks and really going over the top with the flatpicking. For a good part it seemed that Gillian Welch was playing backup singer window dressing. All of the bluegrass folks were really crowding the stage especially for a long version of “Queen Jane Approximately" a Dylan tune I think. Now the part that really hit me was during "I Hear Them All" where they broke out into a full on complete version of "This Land is Your Land" which I have been toying with on the guitar.

Here comes both the moment I had been wanting and waiting on but dreading all that the same time. Everyone began crowding up double-time and I left pressed to the front as Old Crow Medicine Show finally came onto the stage snorting and stomping through songs like "Hard to Love" and laying back smooth for a long ass version of "Caroline". It was also neat to watch Willie Watson break a string and then change it faster than I have ever seen a human being change a guitar string as David Rawlings steps up from behind the stage to pick up the guitar bits in one song. The crowd was really waiting for this and the area up front near the stage was crowded up with people trying to dance and spilling their beers and such. When their part ended everyone was just about near ready to riot because they had not done either "Wagonwheel" or "Tell It to Me". I laughed.

I knew what was coming and I guess everyone was too drunk to realize. The very first "encore" of the extended part of the show when everyone came out again to play together was "Wagonwheel" which got everyone absolutely rocking. Then Justin Townes Earle took a turn with his cover of "Can't Hardly Wait" by the Replacements. It was frickin incredible and honestly I wished I had a good vid of that one. It was badass. Then all of a sudden it seemed Rawlings and Welch go into "Miss Ohio" which was absolutely perfect. With Welch taking lead on the vocals, perfect. Easily half of the big crowd pleasers they left for the end of the show.

The last song was a version of "Tell It To Me" that had the crowd steady up and on their feet. It was a great ending to a long show.

    Easy one: TocarAdam's Song

None, any song of their debut album is just fucking great.

TocarShallow, both the normal and the acoustic version. Best punk song ever.

Most of their songs do, but Ghost of Stephen Foster ought to be my favourite.

    11. What is your favourite album by 40? - Balham Alligators
Only know one album, Cajun Dance Party, but the only really good song on it is Hobo Blues, the rest is not really my taste, actually.

    12. What is your favourite song by 10? - Acda en De Munnik
Oh, hard one... currently Zwerver met een wekker, but I have many more that I adore by this artist. It's all in the lyrics that makes me love them.

To be honest, I only know their The Best of album, but it's fab, so that must be my fav anyway.

    19. Who is your favourite member of 1? - The Beatles
Well, the Beatles would not have been the Beatles as we know them if any of the members had been someone else, but apart from that, John Lennon has always had a special place in my heart - I prefer 'his' Beatles songs over the other members and his character can only be admired. I've been drawn enough to him to have a special John Lennon tattoo.

Down With the Sickness. Still my fav song by them.

    27. What is your favourite lyric that 21 has sung? - DevilDriver
I gotta be honest, I don't always understand their lyrics (grunts and all), but the line "Some things are best just left unsaid" from End of the Line always appealed to me.

    28. What is your favourite song by 2? - The Statler Brothers
Questions keep getting harder... According to my library it's TocarI'll Go to My Grave Loving You, but honestly, I couldn't choose. I have slight preference for TocarSilver Medals And Sweet Memories, but I wouldn't want to call it my favourite.

    29. What is the first song you heard by 32? - Rowwen Hèze
I wouldn't be able to tell you. I heard this band while growing up - my parents love this band, I have taken a liking to them myself.

    The Used

    39. What is the first song you heard by 28? - Enge Buren

  • The Big Surprise Tour and TWILIGHTZONE.

    Jun 15 2009, 12h49 por ACKthehack

All right I been slack on the journals lately but folks around here have not taken my silence for removal and MrModernRock sent me a link to a show I would be insane to miss.

Ok now I really like Old Crow Medicine Show and the Felice Brothers are cool. Not sure when else I would get to see the David Rawlings Machine and Gillian Welch. But the real super kicker for me is Justine Townes Earle.

I mean I honestly said to myself that I have ever had the chance to see him again after missing a chance a while back I had to jump. I really really just find myself lost in his stuff. After catching all the free downloads from Bloodshot and a couple of live free mp3s I find myself totally lost in this guy's style of country.

    From the website:

    "The Big Surprise Tour

Born out of a deep running comradery built on countless tours and ties between a host of excellent musicians comes THE BIG SURPRISE TOUR, a traveling show of epic collaboration and good times. Kicking off in Hampton Beach, NH on August 4th, THE BIG SURPRISE TOUR is not your standard up down up down line up. Shows will be composed of two 90-minute sets broken up by an intermission. In a free form ramshackle flow the bands and artists will share the stage, taking part in each other’s songs, resurrecting old standards, and playing newly written collaborative material as they go. Each evening is sure to be a unique experience as they all put their many combined years of musicianship and knowledge of song-craft and American music into play for these sessions.

Ketch Secor from Old Crow speaks of the special relationship these bands have and the parts they’ve played in their own individual journey as musicians. “Seven Years ago when Old Crow first met Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch at the Station Inn in Nashville, we stayed up till dawn singing Stan Rogers songs and playing AC/DC licks. Three weeks later we were making a record. They were that rusted sign at the fork in the road showing OCMS just where it was headed.” With the Felice Brothers as Secor explains it, “with their rockin’ unruliness, we found where we had come from in the first place. Music is a mobius strip, contort all ya want and you’ll keep winding up where you started.” Justin Townes Earle is “looking forward to being on tour with folks that are kindred spirits. We all have similar influences, which will be reflected in the covers we do during the show and our collaborations on stage.” For their part, James Felice reminisces that they’ve “traveled around the country with Justin and Cory (of Justin Townes Earle) playing some pretty bizarre gigs. We couldn’t love those guys more.” “As for Old Crow…” he says, “they cleaned us out playing dice more than once.” Perhaps they’ll get a chance to even the score on these dates.

Borrowing from the title of a Felice Brothers track, THE BIG SURPRISE TOUR will live up to its namesake. As Secor states, the audience should “expect the unexpected!” “Music is wild and not tame” he says, and with this tour the artists involved hope to fully unleash the true and unpredictable spirit of creativity. Heaven knows that combined they have a wealth of it to draw from."

The only crap part is the show is a good 2 hrs away for me and if I figure in the time of the concert and the trip back I will be completely useless for work that Monday. Its a Sunday show after all.

Not sure though if I can blow this off. There are too many artists I really want to see.

All this internal "drama" because MrModernRock gave me the heads up. I am really surprised this concert series has not gotten more traction his shout out was the first time I heard about it.

delmorecowpile sends me a link to this very wild website with a ton of obscure music and associated post TWILIGHTZONE. If you do not check this site out for at the very least the album covers you are missing something for sure. I have not decided exact what you are missing yet - weird obscure stuff, underground rockabilly and deep soul cuts.

Definitely worth a check out. All in all a kick ass blog.

  • The 9513 Chart Update 3-22-09

    Mar 23 2009, 23h56 por Carpetbagger513

The American Idolization of The 9513 is beginning. While Brad Paisley managed to snag the top spot on the artists' chart this week with 18 listeners, Carrie Underwood was right behind him with 17 listeners. How did she do it? Well, her duet with Randy Travis, TocarI Told You So was premiered on American Idol and became the second-most popular track with 8 plays, and her take on the country standard Home Sweet Home, the new Am-Idol farewell song, had 6 listeners. Among the top tracks for the week were TocarBlame It On Your Heart and TocarWild Angels, which were featured on Idol's country night last week. Were our members looking for the better versions of those songs after hearing them Idolized? Maybe. Actually, Allison Iraheta's version of Patty's song was pretty good. Oddly, two people listened to TocarRing of Fire by Adam Lambert, and no one listened to Johnny Cash's version.

Elsewhere on the charts, the Top 20 doesn't have a ton of surprises. A couple days with my fiancee's copy of Alan Jackson's Greatest Hits has given me a new appreciation for him, so it's nice to see him sitting at #4 on the charts, along with George Strait.

Carrie's Some Hearts was tied for top album with Taylor Swift's Fearless, both with 11 listeners. Love On The Inside by Sugarland had 10 listeners; personally, I'd trade Sugarland's entire back catalog for one Wilco song (see here), but I'm in the minority there.

Sugarland, Carrie and Taylor absolutely dominated the singles chart this week. Brad Paisley's TocarLetter to Me snuck into the Top 10 with 6 listeners, and Gloriana had the second-most listened-to track with TocarWild At Heart. It was the free song of the week from iTunes, in case you're wondering where that came from. Apparently no one ever checks out the equally free Discovery Download of the week, because that was Eli Young Band's TocarWhen it Rains, which didn't chart at all. It could also be the fact that the song's about 5 years old, and everyone who likes it already has heard it plenty of times.

So for everyone who likes free stuff, check this out. The Southern Tenant Folk Union has three free songs available on LastFM. The band, with a really unfortunate acronym of STFU, are a British bluegrass/folk (folkgrass?) band led by banjo player Pat McGarvey. If you're a fan of Old Crow Medicine Show, they're worth a listen. I'm partial to The Green Eyed Girl (From Louisville). My favorite one from them, TocarNever Got The Best Of Me can be obtained free from their Web site, www.southerntenantfolkunion.com. (Thanks to group member sevinfo for the tip).

Thanks for reading. Head over to The 9513 (www.the9513.com) and read reviews of the new Jason Aldean and Willie Nelson albums or talk about your favorite decade of country music.
