So, it seems Oasis have split. Time for celebration!

It's funny to think back to the mid ninties and the great 'cool Britannia' con of New Labour and Oasis. Both seemed to offer a return to glory, a return to vibrancy and relevancy and a full stop to the end of Thatcherism. Years later, it's clear both were repressive; New Labour with its perverse technology obsession and resultant attempts to make 1984's surveillance society a reality, and Oasis' attempt to straightjacket and doom British rock music forever to a phony '60s retro fantasy. Thank god both are pretty much over.

Leading the spearhead of rigid rock classicism along with fellow turds like Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis's sound was a calculated revival of a romanticised swinging '60s Britain, as if apeing The Beatles would turn back the clock and make our fair country relevant again. As with all conscious retromancy (see La Roux), the result was turgid, joyless music, as grey and insubstantial as porridge and existing only to say "hey, wasn't the past great!". From the pointless Imagine piano riff lift at the start of Don't look back in anger to the later Layla's Street Fighting Man steal, this was sickly incestous music, weakened by dogged adherence to arbitrary formulae, and a painstaking tempering of sound to remove any kind of conscious catharsis in favour of the dreaded A word - the "anthem".

Populist, and anti-intellectual, Oasis were New Labour's own numbing Victory Gin, their beige wallpaper music fitting in equally well in the stereo of a Clarkson-esque Mondeo driver as it did bellowed by a football terrace beer monster. Aspiring to Lennon and McCartney's acid visions, the psychadaelia here is more Ringo Starr on too much Calpol. Lyrically feeble and musically risible, it didn't matter that most Oasis songs really were pretty much about nothing, the important thing was that they weren't about America. If America's music is, as Marcus Greil insists, an attempt at capturing the light and space of that country - the terrain - Oasis' was about filling that gap of a missing tribal identity with a vague nationalism, a harking back to a musical British Empire of sneering disgust for the colonised natives.

With the last traces of the dreaded black washed out of their whiter than white music, Oasis could finally perfect the Beatles sound by removing any trace of experimentation and inspiration. Finally we could have a Beatles Without any of that Sgt Peppers rubbish, churning out identical albums forever. Thus Oasis helped usher in the empty record collection music of the noughties. Robbed of any kind of identity and rebellion in the face of increasingly violent and strange new black music (violence, whether real or suggested being the badge of authenticity in music), the only position to adopt could be a conservative reaction against progression, against change, a retreat to a womb-like safety in remembrance of childhood's sounds. Hence the resurgence of milquetoast garage rock from the likes of the Libertines and The Strokes, up to the hideous wrongheaded miscarriage of the worst of '80s pop in the form of Ladyhawke et al. Thanks Oasis!
