  • O que é underground?

    Out 17 2009, 3h26 por niggalex

Wednesday's best new track was by Akira Kiteshi and it was the awesome 'Glitch Pt 1&2.' As soon as I first (illegally) heard this stuttering, grunting, groinking track, I nipped onto iTunes and bought the single. Wonderful, rich electronic music.

The best old track was by tonight's featured artist, The Hidden Cameras. Although it could have been any of them, I have to go with 'A Miracle' as this song has helped me through some dark times. Joel Gibb's voice, the beautiful lyrics and the silky strings add up to one of my favourite ever recordings.

    This is what I played:

    Bad Religion - American Jesus
Pedro the Lion - Foregone Conclusions
    Aardvarck - Untitled
    Aesop Rock - Zodiaccupuncture
    Black Flag - Louie Louie
    The Narrator - SurfJew
    Loefah - disko rekah
    Fireside - Left Rustle
Friendly Fires - Jump In The Pool
The Cramps - Goo Goo Muck
    The Hidden Cameras - AWOO
Royce Da 5'9 & Mc Jean Gab'1 - Internationally Known
    Metric - Monster Hospital
    Mistabishi - Printer Jam
    Remasculate - Leaves Eyes Cream
    Skream - oskilatah
    Micachu - Golden Phone
    121 Crew - Stop it
Filthy Dukes - This Rhythm (Radio Edit)
    Sky Larkin - Beeline
    Skinnyman - No Big Ting
The Hidden Cameras - I Believe In The Good Of Life
The Decemberists - The Rake's Song
Foreign Beggars - 2nd Hand Contraband
    Emalkay - crunk in space
    Brakes - Hey Hey
The Juan Maclean - No Time
Smashing Orange - All Girls Are Mine
    Rodney P - Run That
Bleeding Through - Dead Like Me
Soft Toy Emergency - I Kno U Want It
Canadian Invasion - The Carcass Of John Mayer
    LCD Soundsystem - Get Innocuous!
    Factor Feat Ceschi - Pray
The Gay Blades - O Shot
MF DOOM - My Favorite Ladies / Remain (Feat. Jose Gonz-Lez)
    Loney, Dear - Airport Surroundings
Akira Kiteshi - noglitch pt 1&2
    Deerhunter - Agoraphobia
Two Fingers - Jewels & Gems (Feat. Sway)
    Cardopusher - Shockandsober
Los Campesinos! - The International Tweexcore U
    Jeans Team - Oh Bauer
    Non Phixion - Rock Stars
Broken Social Scene - Almost Crimes
    Frightened Rabbit - The Twist
    The Hugs - All Smiles
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Kurt Cobain's Cardigan
    Zombie Nation - Forza
The Orange Lights - Life Is Still Beautiful (Alan Braxe Remix)
    Panacea - Vandalism
The Hidden Cameras - Doot Doot Plot
    Air France - No Excuses
The Shins - Mine's Not A High Horse
    Phonat - Set Me Free

  • Asher Roth Sucks

    Mar 19 2009, 1h42 por mayonnaise

I had the misfortune of listening to twenty-three year-old industry-minded Asher Roth's single, which professes his absolute adoration of that educational institution we call College. His voice is monotonous, lackadaisical at best, working frat-boy anthems over a beat remarkably reminiscent of Weezer's 1994 hit single Say It Ain't So. Coincidence? He's been riding on the popularity of this track for the better part of two years.

Roth quickly harnessed a mass of suburbanite followers via myspace, who profess that he's the next big thing, better, even, than Eminem--who is apparently the only other white rapper in existence. Listen kids, before you get your panties in a bunch, at least try to listen to some good hip-hop first. And for the record, not everyone in the rap industry is about coke, guns, and rims; though, I suppose this quote gives us all some insight as to why Roth's own material is less than inspired:
"that was me listening to 10 years of hip hop and not relating to it at all. Like, Damn I don’t sell coke. Damn, I don’t have cars or 25-inch rims. I don't have guns."He also reps that he went 150 bars to Jay-Z in his office--who, by the way, refused to sign him, opting instead for artist Pittsburgh Slim. Slim, an Edan-look-alike with the voice of a Jonas Brother, isn't worthy of more than a mention in this journal entry. To be fair, the boy's already got a pack of songs (loverapslulz) on his own, while Asher has only his single and a bunch of remakes and collabs. Both artists have yet to prove to they can hold their own in the rap game. I feel bad for what Jay-Z had to suffer through after watching Asher's name-dropping ridden freestyle videos on Youtube! Compare to this freestyle video by Eyedea and Slug. You're consumers being tricked into thinking something that's stupid is novelty... it's not!

If white rap's your cup of tea, there are plenty of better emcees of ivory complexions to choose from. Copywrite is a great choice--relatively new, he's been out for a few years now--a man with great potential and lines that pack a punch. Check out his track "The Real Fake Shady - Asher to Ashes" on his myspace. Aesop Rock is one of the more commonly mentioned white hip-hop artists these days. He's got an interesting style and is, in my opinion, worth his hype. I honestly never heard Edan until just recently, even though he's supposedly been recording randomocities since 1986; he's pretty good. Non Phixion is a group with original styles who originally set out to offer, in their own words, “an all white group of MC’s that rivaled the likes of Wu Tang Clan in skill and overall talent”. And who could forget The Lonely Island's recent comedic hit, I'm on a Boat (feat. T-Pain)? You might also like to try out Braille as well for more than just his tight underground beats and conscious flows--but if you're going to be a fan of the genre, I strongly invite you to see beyond the lines. I promise it's not all coke, rims, and guns.

    Artists suggested by posters:
    Goldie Lookin' Chain
    Surreal And The Sound Providers
    Mac Lethal
    Mars ILL
    Brother Ali
Moka Only (goodgreatgrand begs to differ)
    Atmosphere
    Grieves
    The Grouch
    oddthomas
    Robust
    Cage
    Necro

    Asher Roth's Weak Freestyle!

    Eyedea & Slug

Canadian Rappers Jack Shitt and O-Z... you will headdesk.

    every Wednesday 1:30pm till 3pm e.s.t ( GMT-5 )
    every Wednesday 1am till 3am e.s.t ( GMT-5 )

What do they put in the water in Cerritos?
Whatever it is, this former farming community and
current model of American suburbia is THE unlikely
breeding ground for bona fide turntablists.
The current generation of hip hop wizards
surfaced in the early 90s. These visionaries
unplugged their nintendo Entertainment Systems and
traded them in for technics 1200s.
They pleaded with their parents to drive them
to pro sound in Garden Grove to buy the latest mixers,
and snuck into the 18 and over parties thrown by Legend Entertainment,
dreaming of the day they too would
drop dope beats and move the crowd.
By the time the mid to early 90s materialized,
the Cerritos D.J. scene was dominated by three groups:
Audio FX, Grand Groove, Icon Events.
The competition between the three groups was intense,
and claimed more than a few lives.
The future of hip hop looked grim, until
DJ Butta of Grand Groove decided to put an end
to the silliness, and unite the three powerhouses.
The troika put away their differences and united,
behind the Funky President, becoming The Cerritos All Stars.
Today, the All Stars, three in one, and one in three,
use their powers for good, and not evil. They aim to
influence the next generation of turntablists, and
complete the cipher, ever mindful of the turntablists
that came before them. Cerritos All Stars Radio,
the brain child of DJ Kwest of Icon Events,
is the All Stars' voice, their chosen medium to spread peace,
love and hip hop. Long live Cerritos. Long live the All Stars.

    I'm a mexican / german / bohemian / virgo / Ex graffiti writer / breaker / new waver
    (Actually I'm still a new waver...LOL!) DJ / Events Promoter & Musician.
I don't drink ...do drugs or smoke.. (No real reason... I just feel like I don't need it.)
In Chicago most people know me as a dj & party promoter,
I have been spinning records for over 20 some years &
throwing parties for nearly as long. I have never been very happy
doing things the easy way or even playing what everyone else is playing.
GOD!!! I HATE THE radio!!! Well.. most of the time ...
If you think you know what I'm going to play... your wrong.
I like to keep people guessing... Keep them on their toes...
I like taking chances ... mixing stuff that you wouldn't
normally hear played together. I know it may sound selfish but,
I only play what moves me. I think
I just give my audience more credit than most djs
do. Yeah, some folks want to hear the sing along stuff ...
but some don't. I try to take care of those peeps without losing everyone else.
I'm perfectly fine clearing a dance floor ...
this is how new classics are made. I don't worry because
I know exactly how to get them all rite back out there
(I have 50 Cent records too) I just don't play them
the same way everyone else does. LOL!

    DJ Johnny Blaze
    every Monday 4pm till 6pm e.s.t ( GMT-5 )
Los Angeles, Ca – With the continuous fall of commercial radio,
many people have ventured into the world of satellite
and online radio. In early 2007 So Prup Enterprises
founder TuSlic started M.E.T.H Radio. After only three episodes,
M.E.T.H Radio had already become popular throughout
the hip-hop scene reaching up to 5000 listeners.
Known for playing all styles of hip hop and
breaking in unknown artist, M.E.T.H radio was
labeled “ the last of a dieing
breed in hip-hop radio.” M.E.T.H radio interviewed
the likes of Spider Loc, The Young Hogs, Spit, 4EN6,
Young Klev (formally of Black Wall Street) &
others. Met by lots of controversy M.E.T.H Radio
was banned from some popular west coast websites
and host TuSlic was barred to real or “overly-opinionated.
After almost a year hiatus M.E.T.H Radio came back
with a new name and format. Now called so prup radio,
TuSlic brought in LaMotte to co-host & DJ Johnny Blaze
to spin in the mix at the end of each show.
so prup radio continues to break in new artist
but maintains a versatile play list that attracts all crowds.
TuSlic & LaMotte discuss many issues ranging from
politics to life issues during the topic
of the week segment of the show.
so prup radio has already bypassed the success
of M.E.T.H Radio and is climbing to new heights each and every week.
With there straightforward approach, TuSlic &
LaMotte have gained a love-hate relationship among
there listeners. so prup radio has garnered interest
from many online publications and radio companies
to syndicate the show to a bigger audience.
so prup radio has also merged with the popular
    website hiphoprealm.net and created soprupradio.com.
Soprupradio.com, which is spearheaded by the show,
has already emerged into one of the premiere
    hip-hop/urban lifestyle websites online.
hiphoprealm, which has been operating for nearly
a decade has closed its doors to concentrate completely
on building so prup radio and soprupradio.com into a powerhouse.
Also online community weserious.com has teamed up
with so prup radio on a mission to bring various online
urban communities together into one forum. so prup radio
is a strong supporter of unity in all forms and hopes
with weserious.com and hiphoprealm that it can create
a movement that not only can benefit other musicians but also the fans as well!

  • there's a first time to everything

    Set 26 2008, 20h21 por imNotAcookie

This is based on my charts from the last 3 months. I'm getting kinda sick of still having the same top 8 i had like 2 years ago, thinking about rebooting and stuff. We'll see.

    1. How did you get into 30? (Raappana)
I think i saw him perform live at some small beach fest. If that wasn't the first time i heard his music, i had probably heard some songs through a friend since a lot of them like finnish reggae.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Sage Francis)
Hee, funny how Sage has come down from #1 to #22. I heard Slow Down Gandhi as a pre-release single or something before the album (A Healthy Distrust) came out.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 7? (caspa&rusko)
:D this is originally from Snatch (the movie)
When your spirit is floating down that tunnel towards the light, you know whats behind the light?
    it’s not God, it’s me.
and I'm gonna kick your poncy soul all the way back down the tunnel ‘til you choke on your own fucked up ribs.
    Now wake the fuck up.

    4. What is your favorite album by 9? (Asa)
    Terveisiä kaaoksesta i guess

    5. How many albums do you own by number 13? (Morcheeba)
    2

    6. What is your favorite song by 28? (RHCP)
dunno... probably their cover of Jimi Hendrix's Fire

    7. Is there a song by 12 that makes you sad? (Avain)
yea many i think. eg Markus

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Bonobo)
umm. i like many of his remixes. Ketto is the only song that comes to my mind right now, but i have other favourites from him too.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (The Herbaliser)
    At the minute...The Blend. :P

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (DJ Shadow)
Organ Donor brings me back good memories (:

    11. What is your favorite album by 24? (PsychoFreud)
um the only one he's released? :D great album tho.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Asian Dub Foundation)

    3. What is a good memory you have involving 29? (Cage)
All my memories including Cage are a bit...weird.

    14. What is your favorite song by 17? (Non Phixion)
    Black Helicopters

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Kemmuru)
they all make me happy! Pätäkkää, Hunajaa, Skarppaa, etc <3

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Common)
    once

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (10 Ft. Ganja Plant)

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Burial)
    I don't think anyone has

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (The Chemical Brothers)

  • rap vs metal

    Mai 4 2008, 7h17 por deepfriedbrain

I'm so sick of the metal vs rap argument. Especially those metal heads who claim that it takes "no talent" to rap or produce beats. Ironically many of these same metal heads listen to bands like Ulver, (new)Burzum, Kovenant, and Samael who make heavy use of drum programming and sampling techniques developed by hip hop producers in the 80s. I challenge anyone to try to prove to me that Burzum's Hlidskjalf took more talent to create than something like Master P's Ice Cream Man. This is not to take away from the Burzum album or the Master P album, I am just saying both used similar equipment and knowledge to create very different sounds.

It's so frustrating when people decide that an entire genre is simply "not music," it is a blow not only to the art but to the people who make it. You're essentially identifying a person as sub-human if you claim that the music they listen to is not real art. I'm not claiming to like every genre of music, but I don't find it right to call something "not music". Anyone who's ever seriously studied music should know that music is truly undefineable. There's people like the famous composer John Cage, who wrote from the 20s through the 70s, made his music out of noises he recorded... including a famous piece in which he simply sat on stage and did nothing while he recorded the audience as they shouted obscenities at him to do something.

Whats also ironic about metalheads who hate rap, is that metal is just as misunderstood and criticized as rap is. Your average person cringes at metal... everything from the image to heavy distortion to the screams. Most people are unable to feel the atmosphere of Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, or the beautiful melodies in Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery. All they hear is a wall of noise. Yet if you understand these styles of music, a whole other level of appreciation opens up. The loud distortions and screams that many hear become incredibly well crafted original works of art. The same goes for any other kind of music.

Of course this isn't an argument that there are no bad musicians or that you shouldn't criticize bands if you feel the need to. What I'm saying is, you're only in a position to give your opinion about an artist if you are a fan of their respected genre.

I like all kinds of music... this is probably due to the amount of psychadelic drugs (not to mention all the weed I smoke) I've done. You turn on any style of music while you're tripping on acid, you'll completely understand what it's all about I guarantee you. But I'm not saying like all music, all I'm saying is, saying something is "not music" simply because you don't understand it, is the worst blasphemy to all of music.

I'm probably going to get a barrage of childish remarks calling me a fag for listening to hip hop but whatever. If I reach one kiddie out there with my message of openmindedness and psychadelic drugs, my mission is a success. :DBiohazardRage Against the MachineKovenantUlverSamaelMaster PNon-PhixionNecroThree Six MafiaMayhemBurzumE.
